Chapter . Introduction
The ThinkSystem ST50 V2 server is a 4U tower server designed for performan e and expansion for various IT
workloads. With the modular design, the server is flexible to be ustomized for maximum storage apa ity or
high storage density with sele table input/output options and tiered system management.
Performan e, ease of use, reliability, and expansion apabilities were key onsiderations in the design of the
server. These design features make it possible for you to ustomize the system hardware to meet your needs
today and provide flexible expansion apabilities for the future.

Identifying your server
When you onta t Lenovo for help, the ma hine type and serial number information helps support
te hni ians to identify your server and provide faster servi e.
The ma hine type and serial number are on the ID label on the front of the server.
The following illustration shows the lo ation of the ID label.

Quick response code
The system servi e label, whi h is on the inside of the server over, provides a qui k response (QR) ode for
mobile a ess to servi e information. S an the QR ode with a mobile devi e and a QR ode reader
appli ation to get qui k a ess to the Lenovo Servi e web site for this server. The Lenovo Servi e web site
provides additional information for parts installation and repla ement videos, and error odes for server
support.

Server form factor
The ThinkSystem ST50 V2 server is designed to support both tower and ra k form fa tors.
You an hange the server from tower form fa tor to ra k form fa tor by installing the tower-to-ra k
onversion kit. For instru tions on how to install the tower-to-ra k onversion kit, refer to the do umentation
that omes with the onversion kit.
Features
Performan e, ease of use, reliability, and expansion apabilities were key onsiderations in the design of the
server. These design features make it possible for you to ustomize the system hardware to meet your needs
today and provide flexible expansion apabilities for the future.
Your server implements the following features and te hnologies:
• UEFI-compliant server firmware

Lenovo ThinkSystem firmware is Unified Extensible Firmware Interfa e (UEFI) ompliant. UEFI repla es
BIOS and defines a standard interfa e between the operating system, platform firmware, and external
devi es.
Lenovo ThinkSystem servers are apable of booting UEFI- ompliant operating systems, BIOS-based
operating systems, and BIOS-based adapters as well as UEFI- ompliant adapters.
• Large system-memory capacity
The server supports error- orre ting ode unbuffered DIMM (ECC UDIMM). For more information about
the spe ifi types and maximum amount of memory, see “Spe ifi ations” on page 3.
• Large data-storage capacity and hot-swap capability
The server support a maximum of three drives and one slim SATA opti al disk drive.
• Mobile access to Lenovo Service Information website
The server provides a QR ode on the system servi e label, whi h is on the inside of the server over, that
you an s an the QR ode with a mobile devi e and a QR ode reader appli ation to get qui k a ess to
the Lenovo Servi e web site for this server. The Lenovo Servi e Information web site provides additional

• Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager Lite (optional)
Lenovo XClarity Provisioning Manager Lite allows you to onfigure Redundant Array of Independent Disks
(RAID), install ompatible operating systems as well as asso iated devi e drivers, and run diagnosti s. For

• Tremendous durability
The system has been verified to run even enterprise workload, 24/7.

RAID (depending on model) Software RAID
Onboard 6 Gb SATA ontroller that supports AHCI mode (JBOD) or RSTe mode (RAID).
RSTe mode supports RAID 0, 1 and 5.
Hardware RAID
The server supports RAID level 0 and 1.
The RAID adapter should be installed in PCIe slot 1.

Particulate contamination
Attention: Airborne parti ulates (in luding metal flakes or parti les) and rea tive gases a ting alone or in
ombination with other environmental fa tors su h as humidity or temperature might pose a risk to the
devi e that is des ribed in this do ument.
Risks that are posed by the presen e of ex essive parti ulate levels or on entrations of harmful gases
in lude damage that might ause the devi e to malfun tion or ease fun tioning altogether. This
spe ifi ation sets forth limits for parti ulates and gases that are intended to avoid su h damage. The limits
must not be viewed or used as definitive limits, be ause numerous other fa tors, su h as temperature or
moisture ontent of the air, an influen e the impa t of parti ulates or environmental orrosives and gaseous
ontaminant transfer. In the absen e of spe ifi limits that are set forth in this do ument, you must
implement pra ti es that maintain parti ulate and gas levels that are onsistent with the prote tion of human
health and safety. If Lenovo determines that the levels of parti ulates or gases in your environment have
aused damage to the devi e, Lenovo may ondition provision of repair or repla ement of devi es or parts
on implementation of appropriate remedial measures to mitigate su h environmental ontamination.
Implementation of su h remedial measures is a ustomer responsibility.

Contaminant Limits
Rea tive gases Severity level G1 as per ANSI/ISA 71.04-19851:
• The opper rea tivity level shall be less than 300 Angstroms per month (Å/month ≈ 0.0039 μg/
m2-hour weight gain).2
• The silver rea tivity level shall be less than 200 Å/month (Å/month ≈ 0.0035 μg/ m2-hour
weight gain).3
• The rea tive monitoring of gaseous orrosivity must be ondu ted approximately 5 m (2 in.) in
front of the ra k on the air inlet side at one-quarter and three-quarter frame height off the floor
or where the air velo ity is mu h higher.
Airborne
parti ulates Data enters must meet the leanliness level of ISO 14644-1 lass 8.
For data enters without airside e onomizer, the ISO 14644-1 lass 8 leanliness might be met by
hoosing one of the following filtration methods:
• The room air might be ontinuously filtered with MERV 8 filters.
• Air entering a data enter might be filtered with MERV 11 or preferably MERV 13 filters.
For data enters with airside e onomizers, the hoi e of filters to a hieve ISO lass 8 leanliness
depends on the spe ifi onditions present at that data enter.
• The deliques ent relative humidity of the parti ulate ontamination should be more than 60%
RH.4
• Data enters must be free of zin whiskers.5

Press the power button to turn on the server, or hold it for several se onds to turn the server off when the
server annot be turned off in the operating system. The power status LED helps determine the urrent
power status.
