1. Introduction
Thank you for purchasing this Lexibook NTL201 French /
English Electronic Translator. This product has been
designed to help you to translate from French to English
and vice versa.
There are 12,000 words available in each language and 150
conversational phrases, which have been grouped into 10
different categories for easy access and use.
Under normal use the NTL201 is designed to give many
years of service. Please follow these instructions carefully
to ensure your product operates correctly.
In this instruction manual, keys are represented like this
and screen illustrations are shown like this

Opening and closing the unit:
To open the unit, press the front centre button to release the
catch. To close it, gently push the lid down.

2.1 Key Guide
The following diagram shows the keyboard layout. The functions of the keys are described overleaf:

Turns the translator on and off.

Selects the SOURCE language (the

Selects the mode for translating phrases.
BACKSPACE. Deletes a typed character.
Translates the typed word or selected phrase.
Or confirms option shown on the screen.
Or acts as =. Calculates answer in calculator
mode.
SHIFT. To type a capital letter and
accented characters.
To access 2nd functions.
ESCAPE. To go back to previous screen.
CLEAR. Clears the display to Enter a word .
Return to previous menu option. CE / C in
Calculator and Currency Converter mode.
Starts Game mode.
Help key. Displays list of Help topics.
Types a space
MENU. Displays a list of menu options;
Display Language, Currency, Calculator or
Clock.
Scrolls display up or searches for preceding
words.
Scrolls display down or searches for following
words.
Moves cursor to left. Scrolls long words to
left. Note: and moves display to

2.2 Display symbols
• When in translator mode, the current language is
indicated at the left of the display. EN means English and
FR means French.
• There are four arrow symbols on the right of the display.
These symbols will flash to indicate when you can use
the arrow keys to scroll up, down, left and right.
3. Getting Started
3.1 Removing the battery protection tab
Before you start using the unit, carefully remove the
battery tab located at the rear of the unit. The unit should
switch on when you remove this tab.You can also press
to switch the unit on, after the tab has been removed.
Note: In the unlikely event that your unit does not switch
on, you may need to reset it using the following procedure.
1. Turn the unit over and locate the small RESET hole on
the back of the product.
2. Insert a small, thin, blunt instrument, such as a
paperclip, into the hole, press gently and then release.
Your unit should now have reset and the display will show
the prompt Enter a word , as the unit automatically
defaults to Translator mode.
3.2 Switching on
Press to switch the unit on. Press again to switch
the unit off.
The LEXIBOOK screen will be displayed briefly, then
the ‘language combination & direction’ screen
English > French is displayed and then the word-entry
screen EN Enter a word .

3.3 Contrast Control
The LCD contrast can be adjusted whenever the
Enter a word screen is shown (you can press to go to
the Enter a word screen).
• Press to decrease contrast or to increase contrast.
• Each time is pressed, Contrast - is displayed and
each time is pressed Contrast + is displayed.
• When the key is released, Enter a word is displayed
again.
3.4 Display language
The Display language is the language in which the screen
messages are displayed. When you first use the unit, you
may need to change this:
• Press MENU to view the Display Language option.
Press to confirm.
• The current display language is shown, e.g. English .
• Press or to change to Francais . Press to
confirm. The unit will then revert to the mode it was in
prior to the MENU key being pressed.
3.5 On-Screen Help
If you require help at any time, press HELP . The unit
will display a list of the following help topics;
1. SOURCE language
2. TARGET language
3. Translation modes
4. Word translation
5. Phrase translation
6. Accents
7. User language
8. Euro conversion
9. Calculator
10. Clock
11. Hangman game
12. Jumble game
13. Screen contrast
• Press to scroll through the list of topics until you see
the desired topic.
• Press to confirm. The help message will
automatically scroll across the screen.
• To pause the scrolling, press . To continue
scrolling, press again.
• To return to the list of help topics, press .
• To return to the screen you were in before you pressed
, press .
• When the message has finished scrolling, the display will
automatically return to the screen displayed before you
pressed .
3.6 Function modes
The NTL201 has several modes. To reach the desired
mode;
• Press TRANSLATOR for translation of words.
• Press PHRASE for translation of phrases.
• Press GAME for Games.
• Press HELP for Help.
• Press MENU to view the menu of other functions;
Display Language, Currency, Calculator and Clock.
3.7 Auto Power Off
If you forget to switch off the unit, it will switch off
automatically after 2 minutes to save the battery life. Press
to resume operation.
4. Translating Words
4.1 General Search
1. Press Translator to start the mode for translating
words
2. The ‘language combination & direction’screen e.g.
English > French is shown and then the
EN Enter a word screen.
3. Type a word you want to translate using the alphabet
keys, e.g. house, EN house
4. Press or to see the translation e.g.
FR maison N .
Note: This translator has a special feature, designed to provide
you with alternative translations of words which may have
different meanings, in the target language, or have similar
meanings. For example the word “full” in English can have the
corresponding translations of “plein” or “rassasie” in French.
Both these translations are correct but have subtly different uses.
To fully utilise this feature always use the key to look for
other translations of words after you have confirmed the home
language entry with the key.

Speech. If the word is long, you will need to scroll right to
see the Part of Speech indicator, or press + to go
directly to the end.
4.2 Sequential Search
1. Once you have translated a word, you can use the and
keys to search for preceding or following words in
alphabetical order. The display firstly shows the
previous / next Source language word and then shows
the translation.
2. When using sequential search, you may find that some
words are repeated. This means that the source word has
different meanings which accordingly have different
translations.
3. Pressing whilst viewing the first alphabetical word
will display TOP OF LIST .
4. Similarly, pressing whilst viewing the last
alphabetical word will display BOTTOM OF LIST .
4.3 Finding phrases that contain the translated
word
Once you have translated a word you can press PHRASE
to search for any phrases (in the current source
language) which contain the typed word. The unit will
search for any phrases (in the current source language)
which contain the typed word. A flashing down arrow will
indicate if there is more than one phrase that contains the
typed word. Press to view the other phrases. When the
desired phrase is displayed, press TARGET or to
view the translation.
5. Translating Phrases
The NTL201 includes conversational phrases grouped into
the following categories:
1. BUSINESS
2. RESTAURANT
3. HOTELS
4. IN TOWN
5. TRAVELLING AROUND
6. HOSPITAL/DENTIST/DOCTOR/POLICE
5. To return to the word which you entered you can press
SOURCE or .
6. If the word is not contained in the database, the display
will advise you, then show the nearest alphabetical entry
in the database, and then shows the translation.
7. If this is not the desired word, you can press or to
search for the previous / next alphabetical word. The
display firstly shows the previous / next Source
language word and then shows the translation.
8. To look up another word you can either start typing the
new word directly or you can clear the display first by
pressing .
4.1.1 Correcting the typed word
1. Press SOURCE or to return to the word which
you entered.
2.You can then edit the word using the and keys to
move the cursor to the desired position where you wish
to insert or delete letters, (use to delete the character
to the left of the cursor).
4.1.2 Changing the source language
1.You may wish to change the language you are translating
from, the SOURCE language.
2. Firstly make sure the Enter a word screen is displayed
(press )
3. Press twice. The display will show French and then
FR Enter a word .
4. Repeat to change the source language back to English.
4.1.3 Typing capital letters or accented characters
1. To type a capital letter, press and hold and press the
desired letter key once. For example, + Atypes an
‘A’.
2. To type an accented character, press and hold and
press the desired letter key repeatedly until the desired
accented character is displayed, then release the key.
e.g. + A+ Atypes an ‘à’.).
4.1.4 Parts of Speech
1. The Part of Speech is shown to the right. In this
example, N= noun.
Please refer to appendix 1 for complete list of Parts of

5.1 Searching by category
1. Press to select the PHRASE mode.
2. The screen briefly shows the ‘language combination &
direction’screen e.g. English > French and then
displays the first option Category .
3. Press to confirm. The first category
BUSINESS is displayed.
4. Press to view the next category. When the desired
category is displayed, press to confirm. The first
phrase of the category will be shown.
5. Press to see the next phrase in the list. Press to see
the previous phrase in the list.
6. When the desired phrase is displayed, press or
to view the translation.
7. A symbol at the end of the line indicates you must
scroll to see the rest of the phrase. Press to scroll to
the right. Press to scroll back to the left.
8. To return to the first phrase (in the Source language) in
the category, press repeatedly.
9. To return to the category listing, press .
After finishing using the PHRASE mode, press to
return to Translator mode.
5.2 Searching by word
The NTL201 enables you to search for phrases that contain
a particular word:
1. To return to the Phrases mode main menu, press the
PHRASE key.
2. The Category option is displayed. Press to show
the Word Search option.
3. Press to confirm. The display asks you to
Enter a word .
4. Type a word and press . The unit will search for
any phrases (in the current source language) which
contain the typed word.
5. A flashing down arrow will indicate if there is more than
one phrase that contains the typed word. Press to
view the other phrases.
6. When the desired phrase is displayed, press TARGET
or to view the translation.
7. If the word typed is not contained in any phrase, the
display will advise you None found and then show the
typed word.You can either edit the word or type a new
word and press to search again.
After finishing using the PHRASE mode, press Translator
to return to Translator mode.
6. Games
The NTL201 includes two fun and educational word
games, Hangman and Jumble, described below. These
games can be played in either English or French.
6.1 Hangman
1. Press to start the Games mode.
2. The HANGMAN option is displayed. Press to
confirm.
3. The display prompts you to select a language
ENGLISH? . The current user-language is the shown
by default.
4. Press to confirm this language or press SOURCE
to change the language.
5. The display prompts you to select a word length
Word length? then <03> characters
6. Press repeatedly to increase the word length (max.
13) and to decrease the word length (min. 3). Press
to confirm.
7. The display shows question marks representing the
letters of the word you must guess ???????? 9
8. The number at the right indicates the number of chances
to guess the word.
9.You can get a clue at any time by pressing to view the
translation of hidden word. Press to return to the
game screen.
10. For assistance, you can press to reveal a letter,
however, this will use one of your lives.
11. Press a letter key to make your guess. When you key in
a correct letter, it will replace the question mark in the

appropriate position.
12. If you type a letter that is not in the word, the screen
will tell you There is no X and reduce your lives by
one.
13. If you type a correct or wrong letter that you have
already tried, the screen will also tell you
X already used (but not remove a life).
14. If you guess all the letters before losing all your lives,
you have won. The display will show You win!
15. If your lives reach zero, you have lost the game. The
display will show Sorry, you lost and the correct
word will be revealed.
16. If you want to give-up the game and reveal the word,
press .
17. At the end of the game when the correct answer is
displayed, you may also press to view the translation
of the word.
18. Press to start a new game or or to view the
games menu.
19. Press to change the source language if desired. Press
to confirm.
After you have finished using the Game mode, press to
return to word Translation mode.
6.2 Jumble
1. Press to start the Games mode. The first menu option
HANGMAN is displayed.
2. Press to view the next option JUMBLE .
3. Press to confirm.
4. The display prompts you to select a language
ENGLISH? . The current user-language is the shown
by default.
5. Press to confirm this language or press to
change the language.
6. The display prompts you to select a word length
Word length? then <03> characters
7. Press repeatedly to increase the word length (max.
13) and to decrease the word length (min. 3). Press
to confirm.
8. The display shows the jumbled letters of the word you

9. The number at the right indicates the number of chances
to guess the word.
10. Type the word that you think the jumbled letters come
from. Press to see if you are correct. Whilst
typing, you can view the jumbled word by pressing .
Press to continue.
11. If you are wrong, you lose a life and are asked to
Try again .
12.You can view the translation of the jumbled word by
pressing . Press to continue.
13.You can re-jumble the word either by pressing
when the jumbled word is first displayed or by pressing
to view the jumbled word and then . Press
again to continue.
14. If you guess the word before losing all your lives, you
have won. The display will show You win!
15. If your lives reach zero, you have lost the game. The
display will show Sorry, you lost and the correct
word will be revealed.
16. If you want to give-up the game and reveal the word,
press .
17. At the end of the game when the correct answer is
displayed, you can also press to view the translation.
18. Press to start a new game or or to view the
games menu.
19. Press to change the source language if desired. Press
to confirm.
After you have finished using the Game mode, press to
return to word Translation mode.
7. Currency converter
The NTL201 includes a useful currency converter which
complies with the strict EEC regulations for the Euro.
7.1 Selection of currencies for conversion
1. Press . The Display Language option is shown.
2. Press to view the Currency option. Press to
confirm.
3. The default currency combination / direction is
displayed FFR>Euro

4. To change the left-hand currency, press repeatedly. To
change the right-hand currency, press repeatedly.
5.You can reverse the direction of the conversion by
pressing .
7.2 Conversion between two Euroland currencies
1. Select the two desired Euroland currencies using the
and keys as shown above, for example FFR>ITL
2. Press to view the rate for the currency combination.:
1 Euro=FFR6.55957 Please note that rates between
the EURO and the 11 ‘Euroland’ currencies are fixed
and have been pre-stored.You cannot change these
rates. Please refer to the appendix 2 for list of rates.
3. Press to to return to the currency combination. Type
the amount to be converted using the number keys and
the decimal point ( G key). For example
FFR 234
4. Press or to see the result ITL 69072.56
5.You can toggle between the two currencies by pressing
and .
6. To make another conversion, type in a new amount and
press or .
7.3 Conversion between a Euroland currency and a
non-Euroland currency
1. Select the two desired currencies using the and
keys as shown above, for example FFR>USD
2. Press to view/set the rate. The screen shows the
prompt Set rate for EURO>USD .
3. To set the rate, type the desired figure: 1 Euro=USD
1.07 and press to save the rate. The saved rate is
displayed for 3 seconds and then the currency
combination / direction is displayed again.
4. To make a conversion, proceed as shown in the section
above.
7.4 Conversion between two non-Euroland
currencies
1. Select the two desired currencies using the and
keys as shown above, for example GBP>USD
2. Press to view/set the rate. The screen shows the
prompt Set rate for GBP>USD .
3. To set the rate, type the desired figure:
1 GBP=USD 0.74 and press to save the rate.
The saved rate is displayed for 3 seconds and then the
currency combination / direction is displayed again.
4. To make a conversion, proceed as shown above.
• When you press to view the rate for a currency
combination such as FFR>USD (Euroland currency to
non-Euroland currency), the display will show the rate
for FFR>Euro.
• When you press to view the rate for a currency
combination such as USD>FFR (non-Euroland currency
to Euroland currency), the display will show the rate for
USD>Euro.
After finishing using the Currency Converter mode, the
user must press the key to return to Translator mode.
8. Calculator
The NTL201 includes a 12-digit calculator with memory
and percentage functions.
1. Press . The Display Language option is shown.
2. Press twice to view the Calculator option. Press
to confirm.
3. The display shows the Calculator mode symbol (on the
left) and a zero (on the right) 0 .
4. Use the calculator keys (please refer to the Key Guide)
to perform calculations.
9. Clock
The NTL201 includes a clock with date.
9.1 Viewing the time and date
1. Press . The Display Language option is shown.
2. Press three times to view the Clock option. Press
to confirm. The time is displayed 05:58 AM .
3. Press to view the date 01 JAN 1999. Press ( to
return to the time.

1. Undo the screw on the back of the unit’s battery door
and then remove it.
2. Take out the battery, noting the polarity, and then replace
with a new one making sure the polarity is correct.
3. Replace the battery door and it’s screw.
4. Press and adjust the display contrast as necessary.
12. Care and Safety
• Keep unit away from direct sunlight, high or low
temperature, humidity and dust.
• Do not drop the unit.
• Do not use detergent, liquid cleaners or solvents to clean
the unit. Wipe the unit with a clean, soft dry cloth.
• Do not twist or bend the unit.
• Do not attempt to open the case of the unit. There are no
user serviceable parts inside.
13. Guarantee
This product is covered by our comprehensive 1-year
warranty. In the case of any fault please return the unit to
the address below for replacement or repair. A copy of
your sales receipt must be included as proof of purchase.
This warranty does not cover faults occurring through
misuse, damage or abuse. This does not affect your
statutory rights.
If you wish to register your product for our extended 3-
year warranty programme please enclose a cheque payable
to Lexibook UK Limited for the total sum of £7.50, along
with your full name and address details. You will be
registered and a warranty certificate will be forwarded to
you.*
9.2 Setting the time and date
1. The first time you view the Clock, you will need to set
the time and date. Press +
2. The display will prompt you to select the time format
(12 or 24-hour). The first choice is displayed as
Time format 12H ?
3. Press to confirm 12-hour format or press ( to
view the Time format 24H ? option. Press to
confirm 24-hour format.
4. HH:MM AM is displayed with the first H flashing.
5. Enter the time using the number keys. For 12-hour
clock, press the key to change AM to PM (press the
key to change back to PM). Press to confirm.
6. DD:MM:YYYY is displayed with the first D
flashing.
7. Enter the date using the number keys. Press to
confirm. The time will be displayed again, e.g.
12:34 PM
10. Reset
In the unlikely event that your unit should cease to function
or stop operating you can reset it by a simple procedure.
1. Turn the unit over and locate the small RESET hole on
the back of the product.
2. Insert a small, thin, blunt instrument, such as a
paperclip, into the hole, press gently and then release.
Your unit should now have reset and the display will show
the prompt Enter a word , as the unit automatically
defaults to Translator mode.You are now ready to re-use
your unit. If the unit is still not working, the battery may
need replacing.
11. Batteries
The unit comes supplied with one CR2032 battery. If the
display contrast becomes dim even after adjustment you
should replace the battery with a new one, as soon as
possible. To replace the battery:
