Prepare for setup
1Unpack your printer.
2Remove all packing material from the printer.
3IMPORTANT: Before you connect your printer
to your computer, make sure your printer and
computer are powered off and unplugged.

2Connect the parallel cable
2a... to the printer
1Use a parallel cable that supports bidirectional
communication (IEEE 1284-compatible), such as
Lexmark P/N 1329605.
Note: If you are using Windows 98, you can use a
USB (Universal Serial Bus) cable. For
help, refer to the instructions in your
printed User’s Guide.
2Fasten the metal clips on the printer to the parallel
cable.

Make sure you tighten the screws.
3Plug in your printer
3a. Connect both ends of the
power supply
1Connect the power supply to the printer.
2Plug the power supply into an electrical outlet.

3b. Press the Power button
If the Power light is on, continue with step 4.
If not, check your connections.

4Install the print cartridges
4a. Raise the front cover
When you raise the front cover, the print cartridge
carrier moves to the loading position.

4b. Unpack the cartridges
1Remove each new print cartridge from its
packaging.
2Remove the sticker and the transparent tape
covering the gold area on the cartridges.

4d. Snap the cartridges into
place
1Push back on the cartridges until they snap
securely into place.
If the print cartridges move loosely in the carrier,
they are not locked into place. Make sure the
cartridges snap into place.

5b. Place up to 100 sheets of
plain paper in the auto-
matic feeder
Insert the paper against the right side of the
automatic feeder.
5c. Adjust the media guide
Squeeze the release tab and media guide together
and slide the media guide to the edge of the paper.

6Install the printer
software
Before you install the printer software, make sure you
shut down all running applications.
To install the printer software, follow the steps for
your operating system:
Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0:
1Make sure your computer is on and Windows is
running.
IMPORTANT: If Windows displays a message
indicating your printer has been found, select
Cancel. If the Update Device Driver Wizard
appears, select Cancel.
2Insert the Lexmark Z51 Color Jetprinter CD
into your CD-ROM drive.
•If the Lexmark Z51 Printer Software menu
screen appears after a few moments, continue
with step 3.
•If nothing appears on the screen after a few
moments, follow these instructions:
aFrom the Start menu, choose Run.
bIn the Open: text box, type the letter of
your CD-ROM drive, followed by :\setup
(for example, d:\setup), then click OK.
3When the Lexmark Z51 Printer Software menu
screen appears, click the Install Printer Software
button.
4Follow the instructions on your screen.

Windows 3.1 and 3.11:
1Make sure your computer is on and Windows is
running.
2Insert the Lexmark Z51 Color Jetprinter CD
into your CD-ROM drive.
3From the Program Manager menu bar, choose
File, then choose Run.
4In the Command-Line: text box, type the letter of
your CD-ROM drive, followed by :\setup (for
example, d:\setup), then click OK.
5When the Lexmark Z51 Printer Software menu
screen appears, click the Install Printer Software
button.
6Follow the instructions on your screen.
OS/2:
1Open an OS/2 Window.
2Insert the Lexmark Z51 Color Jetprinter CD
into your CD-ROM drive.
3From an OS/2 prompt, type the letter of your CD-
ROM drive, followed by :\setupos2 (for example,
d:\setupos2), then press Enter.
4Click Install Drivers and Documentation. Click
OK.
5Follow the instructions on your screen.
Refer to the Lexmark Z51 User’s Guide for
information on how to install the printer software
from diskettes.
