2.0 Installation
2.1 Unpacking
Unpack th instrum nt car fully, making sur all compo-
n nts hav b n r mov d from th packing mat rial.
Insp ct all compon nts for damag , and r port any con-
c al d damag to th carri r within 24 hours.
Ch ck th cont nts of th carton, making sur it agr s
with th packing slip and th purchas ord r. V rify that
th mod l numb r imprint d on th nam plat match s
th numb r on th packing slip and th purchas ord r.

2.2 Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
Handling Procedure
Magn trol®l ctronic instrum nts ar manufactur d to

1. Ship and stor circuit boards in anti-static bags. If an anti-
static bag is not availabl , wrap board in aluminum foil.
Do not plac boards on foam packing mat rials.
2. Us a grounding wrist strap wh n installing and r moving
circuit boards. A ground d workstation is also r comm nd d.
3. Handl print d circuit boards only by th dg s. Do not
touch compon nts or conn ctor pins.
4. Ensur that all l ctrical conn ctions ar compl t ly mad
and non ar partial or floating. Ground all quipm nt to
a good, arth ground.

2.3 Mounting

-58 °F (-50 °C).
NOTE All wiring, conduit and electrical fittings must conform to local
electrical codes for the location selected.
Th THERMATEL Flow/L v l Switch has a standard
3⁄4" NPT mount d sign d for asy installation through a
thr ad d conn ction. Optional thr ad d and flang d con-
n ctions ar also availabl .
1. Apply thr ad s alant to th s nsor and ins rt th s nsor
into th thr ad d conn ction.
Caution: Tighten unit only at the wrench flats on the sensor using
an open-end wrench. DO NOT use the instrument head
to tighten the switch to the mounting port. Rotation of
the instrument head with respect to the sensor assembly
can cause internal wiring damage.
2. Mak sur th s nsor is prop rly ori nt d to th flow (r f r
to Figur s 3 and 4) or l v l (r f r to Figur 5).
Caution: The switch body must be oriented so that the flow arrow
is in the direction of the flow/level being detected. Proper
orientation is marked on the wrench flats or on the top of
the flange for reference.
3. For flow switch s calibrat d by MAGNETROL, install th
prob n ar th c nt rlin of th pip . If not calibrat d by
MAGNETROL, install th prob at l ast 1⁄4diam t r d pth
into th pip . For b st r sults it is r comm nd d to install
th switch with fiv diam t rs of straight run upstr am

2.4 Wiring

Caution: OBSERVE ALL APPLICABLE ELECTRICAL CODES
AND PROPER WIRING PROCEDURES.

6 for TD1 or Figur 7 for TD2 l ctronics. Not that
th TD1 transmitt r shall b conn ct d to a saf ty xtra
low-voltag circuit (SELV) with a Um ≤ 28.8 V. Th TD2
is availabl for AC pow r (100 to 264 VAC) or as a DC
pow r (19.2 to 28.8 VDC).

Caution: In hazardous areas, do not power the unit until the
conduit is sealed and enclosure cover is screwed
down securely.
NOTE For supply connections use wire with a minimum rating of
+75 °C, as required by process conditions. Use a minimum of
12–16 AWG wire for power and ground field wires.
NOTE An approved disconnect device and current limiting device or
circuit breaker, maximum 15A shall be installed in close prox-
imity to equipment and within easy reach of operator.
It shall be marked as the disconnecting device for the equip-
ment.
NOTE Housing must be grounded via protective ground screw in the
base of the housing.

Chart Notes and Definitions
1. Equipment controlled by the THERMATEL relay is assumed to be powered from
one source, while the THERMATEL unit itself is assumed to be powered from a
different source.
2. “Fail” means a loss of power to the THERMATEL unit.
3. HL means a flow rate or level which is above the adjusted set point.
4. LL means a flow rate or level which is less than the adjusted set point.
5. When the relay coil is de-energized, a connection is made between the terminals
CO (common) and NC (normally closed), and there is no connection between CO
and NO (normally open).
6. When the relay coil is energized, a connection is made between the terminals CO
and NO, and there is no connection between CO and NC.

2.4.2 Remote Electronics Wiring (TD2 only)

Th cabl ’s six conductors ar conn ct d to t rminals
1 through 6. Th cabl shi ld should b conn ct d to th
gr n ground scr w in th s nsor housing. If th cabl is
suppli d by MAGNETROL, th n this conn ction is
pr -wir d at th circuit board. Th us r only n ds to
conn ct th wiring at th t rminal conn ction on th
s nsor nclosur .
If cabl is suppli d by us r, r mov b z l by placing
scr wdriv r blad in slot in c nt r of b z l and g ntly
pull th handl away from th t rminal strips. Th n

th cabl wiring as shown in Figur 8.

NOTE The six conductors must be wired so that each terminal on
the sensor terminal block TB4 (see Figure 8) is connected
to its corresponding terminal on the electronic circuit board.
Failure to do so will cause improper switch operation.
2.4.3 mA Output Wiring (TD2 only)
Th TD2 will output a mA signal which can b us d for
diagnostics or to provid tr nd indication from th
switch. This mA output r pr s nts th s nsor signal.
Th signal cannot b scal d by th us r. Th output is
proportional to th flow rat . Th rang of outputs will
vary for ach unit du to diff r nc s in prob s. Th
rang of th mA output is also d p nd nt upon th
switch s tting (s ction 2.5).
Th mA output can also b us d for fault d t ction. In
th v nt of a fault, th mA output will b gr at r than
22 mA if HLFS is s l ct d or l ss than 3.6 mA if LLFS
is s l ct d.
Th mA output is isolat d from th input pow r.
Wiring of th mA output is shown in Figur 7 on pag 6.
Wiring should b 16 to 26 AWG.
NOTE Due to ATEX requirements, the mA output is not
provided on units for Zone 0 service.

2.5.1 Switch Settings

2.5.2 LED Operation
TD1 – Two LEDs (Gr n & R d)
• Gr n LED glows wh n pow r is on.
• R d LED, glows wh n an alarm condition xists. Th
LED op ration is ind p nd nt of r lay op ration.
• Th r d LED will blink rapidly if th switch d t cts a fault.
It will blink slowly during initial pow r-on.
TD2 – Four LEDs (R d, Y llow, & 2 Gr n)
LEDs indicat alarm status and fault indication. Th LED
op ration is ind p nd nt of r lay op ration.
• R d LED glows wh n an alarm condition xists. It will
blink if th switch d t cts a fault.
• Y llow LED glows wh n approaching an alarm condition
• Gr n LEDs glow as th actual condition is furth r away
from th alarm s t point. This r pr s nts a saf mod .
2.5.3 LED Initialization
Th TD1/TD2 has an initializing p riod to allow th
s nsor to h at up.
TD1 – Th r d LED will blink slowly during th initial-
ization p riod.
TD2 – All LEDs will turn on th n individually turn off.
Wh n compl t th TD2 will r sum normal op ration.
2.5.4 Time delay (TD2 only)
Turning th tim d lay pot ntiom t r clockwis incr as s
r spons tim . This adjustm nt adds tim d lay in addi-
tion to th s nsor r spons tim . G n rally this is s t to
full count rclockwis position unl ss additional tim d lay
is r quir d du to pulsating flow, turbul nc , or splashing.
If tim d lay is us d, th r d alarm LED will first illumi-
nat wh n an alarm condition occurs, th r lay activation
will occur aft r th appropriat tim d lay. Tim d lay
occurs whil going into alarm. Th r is no tim d lay
(oth r than s nsor r spons tim ) coming out of alarm.

2.6 Calibration
Calibration must b p rform d using th actual fluid.
Th switch d t cts th cooling capabiliti s of th m dia.
Calibrating th switch in a diff r nt m dia may chang
th s t point. If th d vic was factory calibrat d by
MAGNETROL, th n th r is no n d to p rform an
additional calibration.
NOTE Set the switches (Section 2.5.1) to the desired position before
performing the calibration. Changing the Heater, Range,
Fail-safe, or Temperature Compensation settings will affect
the set point.

The red LED is illuminated when an alarm condition exists.
High Level Fail-safe
HLFS – Th switch go s into alarm und r a w t (high

s t point. On th TD2, th gr n and y llow LEDs will b
on at low flows or low l v l indicating a normal condition.

Low Level Fail-safe
LLFS – Th switch go s into alarm und r a dry (low l v l)
condition or if th flow rat has dropp d b low th s t
point. On th TD2, th gr n and y llow LEDs will b on
at high flow rat s or high l v l indicating a normal condi-
tion. Th numb r of gr n LEDs illuminat d will d cr as
as th flow rat d cr as s.
2.6.1 Adjustment Procedure for LEVEL Applications
1. Plac HTR Switch in "-" position ( ).
2. S t d sir d fail-saf condition.
3. Ensur tim d lay pot ntiom t r (TD2 only) is fully coun-
t rclockwis (rotat 30 turns or until clicks ar h ard).
4. Imm rs in still liquid. Wait a minimum of 3 minut s for
th s nsor to stabiliz . (On th TD2, th mA output can
b monitor d to d t rmin wh n stabl ).

3.1 Description
THERMATEL TD1/TD2 switch s ar us d for flow,

Th TD1 is th basic v rsion whil th TD2 off rs
advanc d options including LED indication of flow/l v l,
optional r mot l ctronics, mA output r pr s nting th
s nsor signal, tim d lay, and a voltag signal r pr s nting
th s t point of th unit.
S nsors ar availabl in 316/316L stainl ss st l, Hast lloy®C,
or Mon l®w ld d construction. Th asy-to-install and
adjust units provid r liabl , low maint nanc p rformanc
in th most d manding applications.
Both switch s hav continuous diagnostics to d t ct a
failur of th s nsor. This is accomplish d by continuously
monitoring th signal from th s nsor which must r main
within s t l v ls. In th v nt th switch d t cts a fault,
th r lay will d - n rgiz and th r d LED will blink.
3.2 Theory of Operation
Th THERMATEL Flow/L v l Switch consists of a dual
l m nt s nsing ass mbly mount d int grally to th l c-
tronics, or th s nsor may b r mot mount d up to 500
f t (150 m t rs) from th l ctronics (TD2 only).

3.3 Fault Detection
Th TD1 and TD2 hav continuous s lf diagnostics to
nsur th signal from th s nsor is within a s l ct rang . If
th l ctronics d t ct an out of rang signal, th switch
will go into fault mod .
In th v nt of a fault, th r d LED will blink and th
r lay will d - n rgiz . In th TD2, th mA output will go
to l ss than 3.6 mA if low l v l fail-saf is s l ct d or
gr at r than 22 mA if high l v l fail-saf is d t ct d.

sensitivity). Turn TEMP COMP/TC off if problem
continues (requires re-calibration) or operate at
HEATER/HTR “+” and make sure FAULT/FLT
switch is “off”
Light stays on—Return HEATER/HTR switch to “+” and turn
TEMP COMP/TC “off”. If light goes off then
recalibrate and operate in this mode. If light stays
on check resistance to determine if a problem
exists with the probe or electronics. Refer to
Section 3.4, Resistance Values on page 17. Probe
and/or electronics may need to be replaced.
*If changing any switch setting, besides the fault, a recalibration will be required.

3.6 Maintenance
3.6.1 Cleaning

cl aning. Lim d posits may b saf ly r mov d by soaking
in 20% hydrochloric acid. Warming to +150 °F (+66 °C)

For unusual cl aning probl ms, contact th factory and
d t rmin th xact mat rials of construction and ch mical
compatibility b for using strong acids or unusual
cl ans rs.
3.6.2 Probe Replacement
NOTE The switch will require recalibration (section 2.6) following
probe replacement.
