1. Introduction
MPAADisaresultofseveralyearsofdevelopment,research,andtests.Thisdevice
combinesinitselfthelatestelectronictechnologiesandcomponents.Itsdevelopment
prioritized higherreliabilityandresistance aswell asthesatisfactionofcurrentparachuting
requirements.Italsoaimed atsettingstandardsforthethirdgenerationofsecuringdevices.
Thelocationoftheentiredevice inacompact,duralumincasewithoutouterconnecting
cablesprincipally excludesanypossiblemechanicaldamage andsimultaneously markedly
enhancesresistance againstelectromagneticinterferences.MPAADisamodern,electronic,
microprocessor-controlled securingdevice thatdoesnot requireanyspecialmaintenance
andthatfeaturesseveraladditionalfunctions.Thedevice canbearbitrarily setasEXPERT,
BEGINNERor TANDEM.
2. Designation
Thedevice isdesigned for all typesofparachutejumps, includingthefollowing:
RW,CRW,FREEFLY,FREESTYLE, SIT-FLYING,SKYSURFING,jumpswitha
CAMERA,PRECISION LANDING,INDIVIDUALACROBATICS,AFF,TANDEMS
andBEGINNERS.

Description
1. Function
Theprimaryfunctionofthisdevice isto activateareserveparachutewhenaparachutist
free-fallsatadangerousheightandthusto preventtheparachutist’s directfall onthe
ground.Thelimitvaluesofactivationdifferdependingonthespecificadjustmentofthe
device;i.e.EXPERT, BEGINNER,andTANDEM.Theheightofactivationmeansthe
highestadmissibleheightwhenactivationcantake place.Thedevice canbestarted atany
heightbetweentheactivationheightandtheground,ifafall ratehasbeenexceeded.
Activationatalowerheightthantheactivationheightispossible,forinstance,afteralow
release.Aheightlock indicatestheheightthathasto beovercomeinorderto unlock the
device.Ifthisheighthasnot beenreached,butactivationconditionshavebeenmet,the
device will not beactivated.
EXPERT
Activationtakesplace iftheheightabovethegroundisless than270mandthefall
rateisgreater than35 m.s-1. Theheightlock is450m.
BEGINNER
Activationtakesplace iftheheightabovethegroundisless than270mandthefall
rateisgreater than20 m.s-1. Theheightlock is450m.
TANDEM
Activationtakesplace iftheheightabovethegroundisless than560mandthefall
rateisgreater than35 m.s-1. Theheightlock is900m.
2. Additional functions
Thedevice hasabuilt-inreal-timeclock thatrunscontinuously ifthereisabatteryinthe
device.Whenstartingthedevice,theconditionofthebatteryisindicated inpercentsof
remainingcapacity.Nootheradjustmentproceduresapartfromthedevice’s start-up have
to bemade prior to thefirstjump. Ifalandingsurface issituated lower or higher thanastart
point,thisdifference canbesetonthedevice (±600 m). Aqualified personmaychange the
adjustmentofthedevice to theTANDEM,EXPERTorBEGINNERsettingaccordingto
theuser’s requirements.Thequalified personcanalsosetthetimeofthestandbymode to 1
to 19 hours.Detailed datafromthepreviousjumparestored inthedevice memory.The
device operatesasa‘black box’.Suchdetailscanberetrieved ifneeded bythequalified
person. Thedataareautomatically rewrittenafter eachjump.

4. Mainparts
All ofthedevice partsarecontained inaflat,metalcasethatisdivided inthree
compartments.Theupperonecontainsamicroprocessor, areal-timeclock,supporting
electriccircuits,abarometricpressuresensorwithadisplayandtwobuttons.Thelower
compartmentcontainsabattery.Themiddlecompartmentcontainsapyrotechnicchopping
mechanism. Thebatteryandthechoppingmechanismcanbereplaced.
5. Locationof the device
Thedevice islocated underthelowerpartofthepackingbag ofthereserveparachute.Its
controlbuttonsanddisplaycanbeaccessed throughawindowontherearside ofthe
packing.Theclosingloopofthereserveparachuterunsthroughtheopeninginthecentral
device partwherethechoppingmechanismisplaced aswell.MPAADfillsup thearea that
isnaturally created inthebetween-the-blade partofthepackingofthereserveparachuteby
pullingtheclosingloopthroughapaddingplate.

1. Deactivateddevice
Thedisplayisemptyandwhenevertheleftorrightbuttonispressed,intentionally orby
accident, thedisplayindicates [ OFF ] .
2. Device activation
Thedevice isstarted bypressingthebuttonsoftheso-called activationsequence several
times.Firstreleasebothbuttons.Press theleftbuttonandkeep itpressed (o).Afterthree
seconds,thedisplaywill shownumberone [1].Press therightbutton (>) three timesin
arowandreleaseit.Aftereachpressingthedisplaywill showagrowingrowofnumbers
[ 12 ], [123 ] and [1234 ].Once numeral4hasappeared onthedisplay,releasetheleft
controlbutton (o). Thisactivationsequence isthencomplete.Thewholesequence must
not lastlongerthantenseconds.Ifamistake ismade thewholeproceduremustbe
repeated.
Thedisplayshows [ON ] briefly andthenitimagestheremainingcapacityofthebattery
rangingfrom [100%] to [0%].Subsequently,automaticcalibrationtakesplace and
[ CAL] appearsonthedisplay. Afterwards, themachineswitchesto astand-bymode.
Duringtheactivationprocedure, MPAADchecksthebattery, choppingmechanismand
electronics.
3. Machine deactivation
Turnoff thedevice inthesamewayinwhichyouactivated it–i.e.bymeansofthe
activationsequence.Thedisplayshows [ OFF ]. Ifyouforgetto turnthedevice off, itturns
off automatically once thetimeofthestand-bymode hasbeenfulfilled.Thedevice canbe
turned off duringthestand-byandjumpmodes.
4. Calibration
Calibrationiscarried outto setazeroheightforthelandingsurface.Itisstarted when
activatingthedevice andthenautomatically aftereachjump.When [CAL] appearsonthe
display, thedevice measuresacurrentpressureandsetsitasaheightzerovalue.
Therefore,youshouldalwaysactivatethedevice only inthearea ofthelandingsurface.If
thevaluesfluctuatebadly duringthemeasurementofpressure,anerrorisshownonthe
display. Thedevice hasto bedeactivated.

Ifyoulandoutside anairportunintentionally andfindyourselfatamarkedly lower or higher
heightonyourwayback (±10 m), turnthedevice off manually afterarrivalandthenturnit
onagain!Ifyouareindoubt,proceed inthesamewayto beonthesafeside!Thiswill
securetheproper re-calibrationofthedevice prior to thenextjump.
5. Stand-bymode
Wheninthestand-bymode,thedevice isontheground.Pressureandapossibleairplane
startarechecked regularly.Thismode startsassoonasthecalibrationiscompleted.The
displayshowsatimecountdownuntil theautomaticturningoff ofthemachine.For
instance,thedisplayshowstimeinformation [14:00 ] withaflickeringsecond-indicating
coloninthemiddle.Thisindicatestheintroductionofthedevice into thestand-bymode for
fourteenhoursafterwhichthedevice turnsoff automatically.All thetimethedisplaywill
continue to showthetimeremainingto theturnoff,forinstance, [14:00 ], [ 13:59 ], [
13:58 ], ……, [ 00:01 ], [ 00:00 ].
Ifthedevice issetto adifferentmode thanEXPERT, thisisindicated onthedisplay.The
TANDEMadjustmentisindicated byletter ‚t’ inthefar-rightdisplayfield,forinstance,
[ 14:00t]. TheBEGINNERadjustmentisindicated byletter ‚b’, forinstance, [14:00b ].
WhentheEXPERT adjustmentisused, thefar-rightdisplayfieldisempty.
6. Jumpmode
Justawhileafteranairplane’s startthedevice automatically changesto ajumpmode.The
displaystopsimagingtimeandshowsacurrentreached heightabovetheground(AGL).
Afterlandingacalibrationsequence takesplace andthedevice automatically switchesback
to astandbymode.
Note:
Justalookatthedisplaycancheck not only themode inwhichthedevice isoperatingbut
alsothetimeremainingto anautomaticturnoff aswell astheproper functionofthedevice.
7. Adjustmentduringa jumpoutside anairport
Ifthelandingsurface islocated higherorlowerthanthestartingplace,thedevice hasto be
adjusted to acorrectvalue asfollows:
Ifthedevice ison,turnitoff.Activatethedevice bymeansoftheactivationsequence.As
soonasthedisplaybeginsto read [ON ], press therightbutton (>) andkeep itpressed
until thedisplaystartsto show [SEt].Bypressingtherightbuttonorkeepingitpressed
adjusttherequired heightofthelandingground(±600 m). Confirmyourselectionby
pressingtheleftbutton (o).Once thecalibrationhasbeencompleted,thedevice switches
to astand-bymode.Thedisplayshows,inturns,atimecountdownandasetheight,for
instance, [ 14:00 ] …[ +120 ] …[ 14:00 ].

Afterplanned landingonthelandinggroundoutside anairportusingthere-calibrationof
thelandinggroundheight,thedevice turnsoff automatically!Thedisplayisemptyand
whenpressingonthebuttonthe [OFF ] signbecomesdisplayed.Priorto thenextjump,
beitontheoriginalor anew landingground, turnonthedevice again.
8. UserMenu
Toenter theUser Menupress therightbutton ( >) andkeep itpressed for about4seconds.
Thedisplaywill show [-01-]. Releasethebuttonandthedisplaywill showtheheightof
opening.Ifyoukeep onpressingthebutton,youwill startgoingthroughthemenu.Press
theleftbutton ( o) to leavethemenu. After awhilethemenuwill deactivateitself.

9. Errorstatuses
If [Exxx ] (error) appearsonthedisplayduringautomaticcontroloratanytime,itis
necessaryto replace either thebatteryor thechoppingmechanism, or to restartthedevice.
If [Fxx ] (failure)appearsonthedisplay,thedevice mustbesentto themanufacturerfor
inspection. Inthiscasethedevice becomesblocked andcannot beturned off.
E001, E010 Range error duringcalibration. Thescatter ofpressuresamplesistoo large.
E002, E020 Choppingmechanismerror. Pyrocartridge isfaultyor activated.
E004, E040 Batteryerror. Batteryvoltage islow.

ThestructureofMPAADisnew anddiffersfromthestructureapplied to themost
frequently used devices.Therefore,itdoesnot allowfortheuseofavailableassembly
componentsbuiltinamajorityofcurrently used parachutesets.However, completed tests
proved thatminoradjustmentsmake MPAADsuitableformountinginto mostcurrently
used parachutesets.
Note:
ThepresentationoftheMPAADdevice fortheleadingforeignmanufacturerofparachute
equipmenthasnot yettakenplace.Themanufacturer’s agreementisrequired forthe
mountingofaMPAADdevice into aparachutesystem.

Maintenance
1. Special maintenance
Thedevice doesnot requireanyspecialmaintenance.Thedevice performscontinual
automaticchecks(battery, internalcircuits, choppingcartridge).
2. Properfunctioncheck
Theusercaneasily check theproperoperationoftheMPAADdevice bylookingatthe
display.
-Thereal-timeclock mustcorrectly countdownthetime(stand-bymode).
-Theheightonthedevice displaymustcorrespondwiththeheightatthealtimeter
(jump-downmode).
Note:
Evenamorethoroughdevice check isrelatively simple.However, itrequiresacertainlevel
ofknowledge. Therefore, itcanbecompleted only byapersontrained bythemanufacturer.

3. Batteryreplacement
Thebatterycanbereplaced only byaduly informed parachutetechnicianorbyatechnician
trained bythemanufacturer!
Thedisconnectingandconnectingofconnectorsshouldbelimited only to thenecessary
replacementofthebattery!Unnecessaryrepeated disconnectingmayresultinthe
deteriorationoftheelectricalparametersoftheconnectors.
Batteryassembly procedure:
•Gently press thebatterycontactamongthecontactsinthedevice.
•Foldthecablesothatitmakesarightangle.

•Turnthebatterycellsby90° to insertthebatteryinto thedevice body, the
inscriptionsonthebatteryfacingup.
Once thebatteryhasbeeninstalled, accommodatethecableinthethroughonthe
right, inthecentralpartofthebody.
•Attachalidandtightenthescrewsgently soasnot to damage thethread or thebolt.
Forthemountingofthecap onto theinstrumentbodyareused specialscrewsthat
mustbetightened bymeansofthesocketspannerNo.2–thespannerwill be
plugged withistlongerside into theholeinthescrew head.Theshorterside ofthe
spannerNo.2made theproducerpurposely squashed flatsothattheuseofthisside
ofthespanner for thescrew tighteningwouldbeavoided.
Note: Validfor theproductdispatched from08/2004.
•Check thedevice byturningiton.
4. Choppingmechanismreplacement
Itsreplacementcanbecarried outonly byaduly informed parachutetechnicianorbya
techniciantrained bythemanufacturer!
Ifactivated,anew sparepyrotechnicchoppingmechanismwill beprovided free ofcharge
(only postage will becharged). Thiswill apply only ifthemanufactureristhensentareport
(FAX, mail, post) givingdetailsabouttherespectivecircumstances(see theform).
Choppingmechanismreplacementprocedure:
•Carefully removethepyrocartridge fromthecentralpartofthebodyanddisconnect
itsconnector.

•Lead thecableto thegrooveonthepartition.Thesurface undertheconductoris
provided withglued onelasticrubber to insulatethecable.

5. Device adjustmentchanges
Aqualified personmaychange theadjustmentofthedevice to TANDEM,EXPERTor
BEGINNERandto setthetimeofthestand-bymode from1to 19 hours.

Principles
-Alwaysturnonthedevice only inthearea ofthelandingground, i.e. not intheairplane.
-Ifyoulandoutside anairportunintentionally andfindyourselfatamarkedly loweror
higherheightonyourwayback (±10 m), turnthedevice off manually afterarrivaland
thenturnitonagain!Ifyouareindoubt,proceed inthesamewayto beonthesafe
side!
-Thecabinoftheparachuteairplanemustbeconnected to thesurroundingpressure.
-Aftertakingoff,theparachuteairplanemustnot descendbelowtheheightofthe
landingground.
-Ifthepositivere-calibrationofthelandinggroundisapplied,theairplanemustnot
descendbelowtheheightofthelandinggroundifithasalreadyovercomethesame
height.
-Whenre-calibrationisused,theheightlock isused withregardto theheightofthe
landingground, not ofthestart-up ground.
-Ifparachutejumpsareinterrupted,itisnecessaryto observeadescentspeed lower than
anactivationspeed or to turnoff thedevice whilelanding.
-Whenreplacingthebatteriesandactivatingthesecuringdevice repeatedly,itisalways
necessaryto check theproperadjustmentofthedevice;i.e.Expert,Beginneror
Tandem.Iftherespectiveadjustmentdoesnot correspondwitharequirement,itmust
bere-selected.

Service life and warranty terms and conditions
Theanticipated service lifeofthedevice is15 years.
Damage orshortcomingsthathavebeendemonstrably caused bythemanufacturerwill be
repaired free ofcharge withinaperiodoftwoyearsfromthedateofsale.
Awarranty-covered repair, ifany, doesnot extendthetimeofthewarrantyperiod.
Warrantydoesnot apply to damage caused byforce majeurorothercauses,includingbut
not limited to anaccident,impact,improperuse,unauthorized modifications,handling,
misuse, etc.
CAUTION
MPAADisasecuringdevice!Itisnot designed to beused asaprimarymeansfor
parachuteopening.
ThedifferentuseoftheMPAADdevice thanisdescribed intheoperationmanualmaylead
to itswrongfunction.
Consideringacertainrisklevelthatisanintegralpartofsportparachuting,noother
requirements–especially,inparticularthoseconcerningbreakdownafterparachutist
accidents–cannot beaccepted.
HEAD VIII
Caution
The properfunction ofthe packing bag issecured onlyby the PV–038 pilot
parachutes.The minimalbuoyancy force ofthispilotparachuteis170 N.The upper
diameterofthe firmpartofthe pilotparachuteis70 mm,whilethe lowerdiameterof
the conicalspring is140 mm.
The application ofothertypesofpilotparachutesissubjecttothe approvalofthe
manufacturerofthe packing bag.

Placingthe MPAAD securingdevice into
apackingbag
TheMPAADsecuringdevice canbestored only inapackingbag designed forthis
purpose.
Leadingthecordthroughthepad:
1. Lead thecordthroughthepad center (1).
2. Thenlead thecordto theopeningsmarked withnumbers2, 3, 4, 5.
3. Lead thecordrunningthroughthecenterto asignthatinformsthepackingstaff
aboutthepreciselength.
4. Take theendofthecordpulled fromtheopeningNo.5andneedleitinbetweenthe
cordrunningbetweentheopeningsNo. 3and4.
5. Letthecordendstick outbyca 15 mm.
6. Thecordthathasbeenled alongitsentirelengthasdescribed aboveisfixed by
friction, whichpreventsitsshifting.
7. Inthearea betweentheopenings2–3and4–5thecordcreatesthesurface with
whichthepad alignsonto thebodyofthepyrocartridge.
Completing
Thedevice mustbecompleted byanauthorized person.First,insertthecordandthe
pad into thedevice.Thecordisinserted into thepad inaunique wayandthereforeitisnot
necessaryto secureitsendswithaknot. (Cordinstallationprocedure–picture1).
Putthedevice into thepocketsownonto theback padded piece,thedisplayfacingthe
translucentplasticplate.Lead thecordthroughtheopeninginthepocketandthentake it
throughthebushingpressed onto thebottomofthepackingbag ofthereserveparachute.
Stabilisethedevice inside thepocketandthepackingbag isthenreadyfor packing.
Thereserveparachutecanbepacked only byapersonwithvalidauthorization. Once the
reserveparachutehasbeenpacked, thefunctionofthedevice hasto bechecked.
