1-1 This Document
This document describes menu configurations on the front panel of -LMi option for the TB series, as well
as the LXI standard and SCPI command.
1-2 Introduction
Thank you for adding -LMi option to our product.
We have taken all possible measures to control the quality of our products. In order to get the full benefit
of its superior performance and use it long and safe, handle it properly according to this manual.
We have applied our best to prepare this instruction manual, but if you find any unclear points, errors, and

2-1 Features
The features inherent to -LMi option are four points shown below.
Interface
LAN, RS-232C, USB (TMC), RS-485
Only when the interface is set to LAN/USB/RS-485, -LMi option operates as a compliant
with LXI.
LXI is compliant with class "C", version ”1.4 LXI Core 2011”.
(For LXI, refer to Chapter 3.)
TCP/IP mode
DHCP,Auto-IP,and Manual-IP
Command
SCPI command and Matsusada Precision original command
Web interface (for Web interface, refer to Chapter 6.)

(1) LAN communication link indicator
The status can be checked when the interface is set to LAN. (Refer to Chapter 4-4.)
Link indicator

The interface is not set to LAN.
Green lit
The unit has gotten the IP address and is in normal
communications.
Green blinking
The unit is getting an IP address.
Red lit
The unit does not locate a communicating party or failed to
get an IP address.
(Others, refer to the instruction manual of the power supply unit for basic front panel operation.)

3-1 LXI
LXI (LAN eXtensions for Instrumentation) is a standard measurement system using "LAN" for the
communication bus between PC and measurement instrument. LAN is recently used instead of GPIB that
has been used for communications with measurement instruments for years. LAN has features such as
"distance between devices to be connected can be longer than GPIB" and "multiple measurement systems
dispersed can be constructed". LXI will be a new standard to utilize its features.
The following table shows the comparison of features between LXI and existing LAN measurement
instruments.
From the list, you can see that "compliance of IVI driver" and "Web interface" are required for the LXI
measurement instrument.

3-2 IVI Driver
IVI (Interchangeable Virtual Instrument) driver is middleware for controlling measurement instruments
designed by IVI Foundation based on industry-standard specifications. This driver provides standard API
for communications with measurement instruments. The greatest feature is the interchangeability function.
This means that the application can be run without recompilation, as long as the instrument belongs to the
same instrument class supporting the IVI driver, even if the instrument in use is changed to another model.
There are eight measurement instrument classes defined, including DMM, oscilloscope, and digitizer, and
our IVI drivers belong to the DC power supply class (IviDCPwr class).
Moreover, the following three APIs are defined for the IVI driver. Our IVI drivers are compatible with IVI-C
and IVI-COM.

Suitable for using Visual Basic, C++, Microsoft Office VBA, and so on.
Also suitable for .NET language through interop assembly.
3-3 VISA Library
The VISA (Virtual Instrument Software Architecture) library is an I/O driver for executing measurement
instrument drivers. It provides an API for automatic control of measurement instruments using a common
procedure regardless of the type of measurement instrument or communication interface (GPIB, RS-232C,
USB, LAN, and so on). Therefore, the VISA library needs to be installed in advance when IVI drivers are
used. Currently, the released VISA libraries are NI-VISA (National Instruments), Agilent VISA IO Libraries
(Agilent Technologies), and so on.

3-4 LAN Communication Protocol
The following two common protocols are applied to LXI instruments when they communicate with each
other.
SCPI-RAW
VXI-11
To start the connection with the instrument using the VISA library APIs, specify the I/O resource (which
indicates the address of a specific instrument) according to the used protocol.
SCPI-RAW3-4-1
This is a protocol for sending and receiving commands via TCP/IP sockets, and "5025" is
recommended for the TCP port. It is a low-level protocol not to require the VISA library and can be
commonly used in various operating systems and program development environments.
An example of an I/O resource for SCPI-RAW is as follows.
"TCPIP::192.168.1.100::5025::SOCKET"
(An LAN instrument that has an IP address "192.168.1.100" and communicates via the port No.
5025.)
VXI-113-4-2
VXI-11 is a recommended standard protocol in the measurement instrument industry. In addition, the
VISA library is built on the VXI-11 protocol. Therefore, the VISA library needs to be installed to
perform VXI-11 communications in advance. GPIB multiline message, uniline message, and service
request function lacked in SCPI-RAW are realized by LAN.
An example of an I/O resource for VXI-11 is as follows.
"TCPIP::192.168.1.100::inst0::INSTR"
(A LAN instrument having an IP address "192. 168.1.100")
3-5 Web Interface
LXI measurement instruments need to have Web interface.
By specifying the address of a measurement instrument on a Web interface, it is available to control and
monitor the instrument or change its setting of the LAN communication status via the Web browser.
For details, refer to Chapter 6.

3-6 USB (TMC)
This is a protocol to allow USB devices to communicate like GPIB.
Existing IVI drivers and applications can be used with USB devices as is.
To start the connection with the instrument using the VISA library APIs, specify the I/O resource (which
indicates the address of a specific instrument) according to the used protocol.
3-7 RS-485
This is a communication protocol capable of multi-drop up to 32 units. Termination resistors are needed at
both ends of the network.
The protocol can use four-wire full-duplex or two-wire half-duplex. (It is needed to switch via Web screen.
Refer to Chapter 6-6.)
Existing IVI drivers and applications can be used with RS-485 as is.
However, since it is a multi-drop system, set that only one slave at a time responds to the data when using
it in a master/slave configuration. If multiple slave units respond, communication may not be available due
to data collision.
Data per unit number can be transmitted and received with the SCPI command [INSTruments]. (Refer to
Chapter 5-3.)

The following settings are available with the Ethernet setting mode.

("Manual” is automatically selected when both ”DHCP” and ”Auto-IP”
are set to OFF.)
In the case where TCP/IP mode is set to "DHCP=ON"
and "Auto-IP=ON", the setting is unavailable.

4-3 Command Setting
Command setting mode switches commands to be used between [SCPI commands]*1 and [Matsusada
commands]*2.
The factory default setting is [SCPI command].
It needs to be set to [SCPI command] when "IVI" drivers are used.

For details of the commands, refer to [8 Using with Digital Control] in the TB series Instruction Manual.
The return values for “MN1”and “MN2”are as follows:
MN1 → MN1=FFFH
MN2 → MN2=7FFH
“MtP” indicates Matsusada Precision original
command.
