As all other MELAG products, this autoclave was manufactured and tested according to
strict quality criteria. Before placing this unit into operation, please carefully read this User
Manual. The long-term functional effectiveness and the preservation of the value of your
autoclave will primarily depend on careful preparation of instruments before sterilization,
and on proper care of the unit.

1.3 Electronic parameter control system _______________________________________
The application of a microprocessor in the Vacuklav®31 implements an electronic parameter control system
(EPS) which continuously monitors the pressure, temperature, and time for the programs. This system
makes it possible to optimize the total operating times in accordance with the sterilizing load and with the
temperature of the unit. The electronic parameter system of the process for limit temperatures, limit pres-
sures, and time sequences enhances the safety / reliability of the sterilization and disinfection results.
1.4 Programs for sterilization / disinfection _____________________________________
The Vacuklav®31 offers two sterilization programs at temperatures of 134°C for wrapped and unwrapped
instruments, one sterilization program for textiles and rubber articles at 120°C, and one disinfection program
at 105°C. In addition, the operator can at any time also acknowledge that the autoclave is functioning prop-
erly by using the test program for steam penetration (the Bowie & Dick Test Program), as well as a test pro-
gram for determining leaks (the Vacuum Test Program).
1.5 Drying_________________________________________________________________
The Vacuklav®31 features a vacuum final-drying function which is integrated into the program sequence. It
ensures excellent drying results within a short drying period. This optional supplementary drying enables the
operator to extend the standard drying time in order to achieve satisfactory results for especially difficult dry-
ing tasks (for example, with multi-layer-wrapped instruments).
1.6 Printout of operational records ____________________________________________
If the operator connects the MELAprint®40 dot matrix printer to the Vacuklav®31, it is possible to print out a
report of each sterilization or disinfection process, together with the process-relevant parameters. This op-
tion enables the user to document the fact that sterilization has been properly performed. If malfunctions
occur during the course of the sterilization sequence, and if these malfunctions endanger the thoroughness
of the sterilization function, the interfaced printer MELAprint®40 will describe these events with a defined
error characteristic.
1.7 Preheating _____________________________________________________________
By pressing the button for preheating [20], the cold autoclave chamber will be preheated as follows: (1) To
120°C if the operator has not made a program selection (2) To the program-specific temperature if the op-
erator has selected a program (this second possibility does not apply if the vacuum test is selected) (3)
This function ensures that the autoclave chamber will be maintained at the proper temperature between
sterilization cycles. This preheating function shortens the sterilization cycle times and significantly reduces
the formation of condensate.
1.8 Automatic water feed ____________________________________________________
A water treatment system (for example, the MELAdem® 45) can be directly connected to the Vacuklav®31 to
make sterilization work simpler, and to ensure constantly uniform water quality. Such a water treatment
system automatically replenishes the water storage tank with demineralized water.

2 Introductory information
2.1 Preparation of the instruments ____________________________________________
MELAG - nonrusting materials
All parts of the Vacuklav®31 which come into contact with steam are made of non-rusting materials. The
autoclave chamber, the water storage tank, and the chamber door are all made of stainless steel. The
steam hoses are made of Teflon, and threaded fittings and solenoid valves are made of brass.
Drag-in rust
The use of nonrusting materials excludes the formation of rust caused by the components of the autoclave.
In cases in which rust forms on parts of the autoclave or on the instruments being sterilized, tests have con-
sistently revealed that the rust has been dragged in from other sources. In other words: the rust originates
from the instruments which have been placed in the autoclave. It must also be pointed out here that rust
can also form on stainless-steel instruments made by leading manufacturers. Such rust can be caused, for
example, by the improper treatment of such instruments with chemical cleaning or disinfecting agents during
preparation for sterilization.
Preparation of the objects or material to be sterilized
The above example of dragged-in rust shows the importance of proper preparation of the objects or material
to be sterilized. The operator must by all means observe the operating instructions.
Before sterilization, the operator must clean and maintain (for example, by oiling) handpieces and contra
angles according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer. The remaining instruments must be dis-
infected and cleaned immediately after use, in a disinfection and/or cleaning solution, in accordance with
specific national regulations and the instructions issued by the manufacturers. Important: Be sure to use
the correct concentration of disinfection and/or cleaning solution, and carefully observe the periods of time
required for disinfecting the instruments. The MELAG company recommends the use of cleaning aids such
as ultrasonic devices, cleaning and maintenance equipment for handpieces and contra angles, as well as
thermo disinfecting systems.
It is absolutely essential that the instruments to be sterilized are thoroughly cleaned before sterilization, in
order to prevent contamination from being separated from the instruments during sterilization and from clog-
ging the filters and the valves of the autoclave. It is important that a brush be used for cleaning of the locks,
links, and hinges of instruments before sterilization. Also make sure to use a brush under running water to
thoroughly remove any cleaning and disinfecting agents from the instruments before they are placed in the
autoclave. Important: Make sure that absolutely no remnants of chemical substances in the form of clean-
ing and disinfecting agents are allowed to enter the autoclave on the instruments being sterilized: if such
substances enter the autoclave, they would cause corrosion there. After preliminary brushing and cleaning
under running water, perform a final rinse of the instruments with demineralized water, and dry off the in-
struments thoroughly.
Also do not fail to oil turbines and handpieces in accordance with the instructions provided by the manufac-
turers of such instruments. Such treatment is required to ensure long life of these components.
Brand-new instruments
The above-described cleaning procedures are also required for brand-new instruments. Such instruments
often still carry extremely small amounts of oil, grease, and soiling from the manufacturing process.
Important: Make sure to carefully follow all instructions provided by the manufacturers of instruments for
preparation of their products for first-time sterilization and for subsequent sterilization.
2.2 Drag-in rust and its effects _______________________________________________
It has already been explained that the non-rusting materials used in the autoclave cannot cause rust to form
in the unit itself. Any rust which forms in the autoclave is therefore "drag-in rust." This is rust which is car-
ried into the autoclave by instruments or other metal objects which have rusted — if they consist of simple
steel and their electroplated (chrome) surface is damaged, or even if they may have been manufactured
from stainless steel. It is often enough to have only one single rusty instrument to get rust on the other in-
struments and on parts of the autoclave, where it leads to material destruction through corrosion. In the
event that drag-in rust causes damage in this manner, it must be removed from the damaged instruments,

from the autoclave chamber, and from tray racks by means of mild cleaning agents especially made for
stainless steel (for example, the German product Sidol™ or an equivalent).
Warning: Do not use steel wool or steel-wire brushes to remove such rust. Remove soiled spots by means
of a damp, non-raveling cloth, or a cloth moistened with methylated alcohol or other forms of alcohol.
2.3 Maintenance of the Vacuklav®31 __________________________________________
2.3.1 Cleaning ___________________________________________________________________________
At least once a week, it is necessary to clean the tray rack, the chamber, and the surface contacted by the
door gasket. The trays and the tray rack must be pulled out of the chamber toward the operator. Then wipe
out the chamber with a soft cloth or a sponge. Do not use metal (mechanical) cooking-pot cleaners or steel
brushes for this work. To clean off stubborn spots, the MELAG company recommends the use of cleaning
agents especially made for stainless steel (for example, the German product Sidol™ or an equivalent). Cau-
tion: When using such agents, make sure that they do not enter the pipes which lead off from the autoclave
chamber. Do not use cleaning agents which contain chlorine, and do not use alkaline substances.
Check the door gasket once a week for damages, and clean it with mild liquid cleaning agents.
The door-locking spindle must be regularly lubricated with silicone grease to ensure that the door can
be easily locked and unlocked.
Inspect the water storage tank once a week for soiling or fouling. If visible coating or deposits are discov-
ered in the water storage tank, drain the water out of the tank by opening the drain tap [2]. Then clean the
water storage tank (for example, by using a small brush, with hot water and a grease-cutting additive. Or
use a non-raveling cloth soaked in alcohol. Then thoroughly rinse out the water storage tank with water, and
fill up with new distilled or demineralized water.
You can clean the outside enclosure parts of the autoclave with commercial, mild liquid cleaning agents, or
with alcohol.
2.3.2 Use of distilled or demineralized water __________________________________________________
Quality requirements
For steam sterilization, it is necessary to use distilled water (aqua dest) or fully demineralized water (aqua
dem).
Use only water which satisfies requirements in accordance with the European CEN standard EN 285. The
table below contains the relevant data.
For operation of the Vacuklav®31, it is also possible to use battery water which must strictly observe the
following: conductivity upon production 10 µS/cm*; conductivity when used 30 S/cm*; pH identical to
the values in EN 285; and evaporation residues equivalent to those set forth in EN 285.
Where to purchase the water
Battery water which satisfies the above mentioned quality is available in most countries at low prices in large
drugstores, auto-supply shops, supermarkets, and do-it-yourself stores. If the purchased water does not
conform to the standards set forth above, and in the following table,it could cause calcium deposits to form in
the steam lines and in the valves of the autoclave, and could therefore impair the functioning of the unit.
Aggressive water (i.e., with a pH of < 5 or > 7) can also damage the Vacuklav®31. The automatic warning
system of the Vacuklav®31 may not detect such aggressive water: it will sound an alarm or report a fault
only if the conductivity of the water is too high.
Formation of spots on the instruments
The extent to which spots are left on the sterilized instruments will depend on the quality of the medium used
to generate the steam.

2.4 Functional testing of the autoclave_________________________________________
2.4.1 Continuous monitoring _______________________________________________________________
The operator of the autoclave can monitor the effectiveness of the sterilization or disinfection processes by
checking the values displayed on the autoclave itself, or by reading the log output by the printer. The user
can assume that the sterilization or disinfection process has been satisfactorily carried out if the following
conditions are met:
1. The parameters of pressure and temperature (which depend on the program executed) agree with the
display on the autoclave
2. The sterilization or disinfection time was correct as stipulated.
The parameter control system of the Vacuklav®31 automatically monitors whether these conditions are in
fact met. If they are not in range, the Vacuklav®31 will issue an error report.
In addition, the operator can install a printer which outputs a printout log, with a list of the process-relevant
parameters for each program.
2.4.2 Periodic testing (every six months) _____________________________________________________
German DIN 58 946, Part 8, Section 3.2, recommends as follows:
"Periodic testing is conducted at regular intervals (e.g., every six months) at the site of installation and opera-
tion. The purpose of this periodic testing is to verify that a small-size sterilization unit satisfactorily carries
out sterilization when it is used according to the operating instructions."
The operator can request test spores from hygiene institutes and government medical testing offices. These
institutions send test spores as requested, analyze them when they are returned after sterilization, and con-
firm the results of sterilization on an official test log.
Spore tests to confirm the effectiveness of sterilization of an autoclave provide valid results only in conjunc-
tion with the sterilization programs of the Vacuklav®31.
When conducting a spore test, the operator must absolutely and strictly observe sterile working conditions.
For example: the spore packets may not after sterilization be placed back into the envelopes from which
they were taken before the process. Contaminated tweezers may also not touch the spore samples. Oth-
erwise, the spore substance will be recontaminated. The MELAG company therefore recommends that the
tweezers be sterilized together with the spore sample. The positive sample which is not sterilized must be
kept separate from the sterilized sample.
2.4.3 Maintenance / service of the autoclave __________________________________________________
The functional effectiveness and the long service life of the autoclave will depend on periodic service / main-
tenance of the unit.
The MELAG company recommends that annual service of the Vacuklav®31 be performed: but only by
trained customer-service technicians and in accordance with the Vacuklav®31 Maintenance Worksheet.
This annual service consists of a visual inspection and a functional test. Such annual service not only in-
cludes testing of all equipment components and electrical elements, but also requires the replace of worn
parts.
If the Vacuklav®31 is operated in conjunction with a MELAdem®45 reverse-osmosis system, then the ME-
LAdem®45 must be serviced at intervals of not longer than six months. If the Vacuklav®31 is operated in
conjunction with water-treatment systems manufactured by other companies (OEM), the service instructions
of these OEM companies must be strictly observed.

3 Installation and initial startup
3.1 Setting up the autoclave__________________________________________________
3.1.1 Transport ribbons____________________________________________________________________
The autoclave must be lifted out of the transport carton by using the transport ribbons. When the unit has
been taken out of the carton, remove the ribbons from the enclosure by unscrewing the two screws for each
ribbon, removing the ribbons, and screwing the screws back into the enclosure.
3.1.2 Leveling the autoclave _______________________________________________________________
The first step to ensure proper functioning of the autoclave is to use a spirit level (carpenter's level) to cor-
rectly align the unit. The spirit level must first be held up flush against the flange of the chamber to ensure
that the entire unit is vertical. Then the front feet of the autoclave [1] must be unscrewed five (5) turns in
order that the autoclave slants slightly toward the rear.
3.2 Electrical power_________________________________________________________
The power cable of the autoclave must be plugged into a 230-V socket. The installed load is 2500 W, and
the unit requires a 16-A fuse. To avoid electrical overloads, the autoclave should be connected to its own
separate circuit.
Switch on the autoclave using the power switch [15] under the enclosure of the operating panel [4]. The dis-
play [3] shows the momentary time as well as the pressure and the temperature of the chamber. The signal
lamp for water [33] lights up.

3.3.1 Connection from the autoclave to the condensate container ________________________
Connect the pressure-resistant tube [82] delivered with the Vacuklav®31 to the autoclave at the threaded
fitting for the one-way drain system. Insert the other end as far as it will go (i.e., up to the stop) into the con-
nector of the condensate container.
Set up the condensate container below the autoclave in such a manner that the one-way drain-system tube
passes continuously downward, without any upward curve, (see the above drawing, which shows the cor-
rect configuration in solid lines for the tube, and the incorrect mode with an upward curve as a broken line).
This configuration is necessary to ensure complete draining of the condensate out of the autoclave.
When setting up the condensate container for the first time, and after each emptying, first fill the container
with tap water up to the "MIN" marking on the label of the condensate container
To ensure proper monitoring of the water level in the condensate container, the connection cable delivered
with the Vacuklav®31 [83] must be hooked up to the level-switch connection for the condensate container
[73] at the rear of the autoclave. Upon each start of the Vacuklav®31, the system will check the level in the
condensate container. If this level too high, the system will report this fault on the autoclave display.

If this fault is signaled, empty the condensate container and fill it with tap water up to the "MIN" marking.
Acknowledge the fault report by pressing the button for acknowledging fault reports [23]. Then start the de-
sired program again.
3.3.2 Option: connection from condensate container to a building drain___________________________
An option is automatic draining of the condensate container. With this option, you avoid manual emptying of
the condensate container when it is full. The standard series-production model of the condensate container
is provided with an overflow fitting [84]. This fitting can be connected to an overflow tube. This tube must
then be connected to a floor drain or to a wastewater trap in such a manner that the overflow drain tube
passes continuously downward, without any upward curve. The excess condensate is forced by pressure
out of the condensate container, through the overflow tube, and into the wastewater drain.
3.4 Setting the clock ________________________________________________________
The internal autoclave clock is correctly set before the unit leaves the production plant. It will continue to run
on its buffer battery while the autoclave is switched off. If it becomes necessary to reset the clock, proceed
as follows:
Place the autoclave into its initial operating state (i.e., no program has been selected): this will be the mode
each time after the power is switched on. The following is an example of what may appear in the display:

Then press the following two buttons at the same time: "+" and "-" [17]. Warning: Do not press these two
buttons unless the system is in its initial operating state (i.e., no program has been selected): this will be the
mode each time after the power is switched on.

Press the buttons "+" or "-" to move among the settings for hours, minutes, seconds, day, month, and year.

3.5 Filling of the water storage tank ___________________________________________
3.5.1 Manual filling________________________________________________________________________
When the Vacuklav®31 is put into operation for the first time, or when the water level in the water tank falls
below a limit, the water signal lamp [33] will remain lit. If there is insufficient water in the autoclave, it cannot
be started.
When filling the water tank for the first time, and when refilling it during later operation, remove the enclosure
cover [5] at the top of the autoclave and fill the water storage tank up to the MAX marking (approx. 4 liters).
Caution: Do not fill the water storage tank over the maximum filling mark MAX.
3.5.2 Automatic water refill_________________________________________________________________
As delivered by the manufacturer, the Vacuklav®31 autoclave is already designed for connection of the fol-
lowing external automatic water refilling systems (for refilling with distilled / demineralized water):
Connection of the MELAdem®45 reverse-osmosis system
Connection of other (OEM) water-treatment systems
Water-treatment systems which operate without water pressure (non-pressure systems)
Water-treatment systems which operate under water pressure (pressurized systems).
Application of the MELAdem®45 reverse-osmosis system ensures optimal operation of the autoclave with
respect to water quality and capacity, and concerning the interface to the autoclave. The installation and
startup of the MELAdem®45 reverse-osmosis system is described in a separate manual.
Please follow the instructions of other manufacturers if you decide to install and service their water-treatment
systems. In any case, the treated water must satisfy the minimum requirements set forth in German VDE
510 or DIN EN 285. The user must also be careful to observe the instructions in the event that the auto-
clave remains out of operation longer than the specified maximum time period: this is especially important
for water-treatment systems which operate without water pressure (non-pressure systems). If the autoclave

remains unused for longer than this maximum period, microorganisms will multiply and residue will collect in
the feed water — which will cause fouling and damage to the autoclave.
In all events, the following must be observed: When connecting a water-treatment system, the overflow must
be installed. The user must in such a manner ensure — in the event of malfunction (for example, the water-
level switchoff system in the water storage tank does not function properly) — that the infeed water running
into the unit will be safely drained out of the autoclave. The following actions are necessary:
The overflow tube overflow drain tube must be installed so as to pass continuously downward,
without any upward curve
The user must install flow nozzles — especially important for water-treatment systems which operate
under water pressure (pressurized systems)
After installing the overflow drain system, the user must test the setup to ensure that the overflow
drain actually functions properly. This is performed by blocking the float switch in the water storage
tank.
3.5.3 Connection of the MELAdem®45 reverse-osmosis system to the autoclave____________________
Requirements with respect to building utilities (tap water supply)
Connection providing untreated water (normal tap water), as supply into the MELAdem®45 reverse-
osmosis system (drain valve with pipe-vent non-return valve, 1/2" x 3/4")
Drain-water connection fitting for drain-water outflow from the MELAdem®45 reverse-osmosis system and
for the overflow system; MELAG recommends as first choice a washup sink trap with a branch pipe lead-

Connection to supply of untreated water (normal city water)
Install the MELAdem®45 reverse-osmosis system in accordance with the installation instructions provided
with the MELAdem®45 system.
Connect the MELAdem®45 reverse-osmosis system to a supply of untreated water (with a 6 1 hose) to a
tap from the normal tap water supply (Item 10), by means of a 3/4" inside thread / hose connection (hose
adapter 6 1, see Item 16), as provided from the Drain Set. If a separate water tap is not available for con-
nection of the water-treatment system to an existing washup sink, then the existing angle-type non-return
valve may be replaced by another valve with 3/4" outside-thread connection.
Installation of the leak monitor (optional)
If the water-treatment system is connected to a 3/4" normal water tap, then a leak monitor (shuts off running
water in case of leaks) can be installed as option. The shutoff valve (Item 9) must then be directly connected
to the normal city water tap by means of the union nut. The hose adapter (Item 16) must be screwed on at
the outlet of the solenoid valve, and the untreated tap water connection hose must be connected to the ME-
LAdem®45 reverse-osmosis system. Plug the leak monitor (shuts off running water) (Item 25) into an elec-
trical socket, and install the electrical leads from the shutoff valve and the leak sensor (Item 27).
Connection of the control unit for external water refilling (external solenoid valve) / pure-water con-
nection
Screw the control unit for external water refilling (external solenoid valve, Item 2) onto the connection for
water feed [39] on the rear side of the autoclave. Connect the power cable of the valve to the socket of the
solenoid valve for water feed [76] on the autoclave. Connect the incoming-feed hose from the MELAdem®45
reverse-osmosis system to the threaded fitting of the control unit for external water refilling, at the external
solenoid valve, Item 2.
Wastewater connection
Use the union nut to connect the Y-fitting of the Drain Set (Item 11) to the existing 1" branch of the washup-
sink trap. Important: Install the two back-pressure valves, with the aid of the guide grooves provided, into
the free ends of the Y-fitting.
Connection of the autoclave overflow
Use the elbow coupling to connect the overflow hose (Item 23) to the overflow fitting [68] of the autoclave,
and to the hose nozzle connector and union nut (Item 14) on the Y-fitting. Important: When installing the
overflow hose, make sure that the hose passes continuously downward, without any upward curve.
Wastewater connection of the MELAdem®45 reverse-osmosis system
Connect the wastewater hose of the MELAdem®45 reverse-osmosis system to the free branch of the drain
Y-fitting, by means of the hose adapter for the 6 1 hose (turning piece with G1/4", inside threads, see Item
12), by using the screwed-in hose threads, 6 1 (Item 17), and the union nut.
Connection of overflow for the condensate container (optional)
The user can install an optional overflow at the condensate container, to provide automatic emptying of the
condensate container. Remove the dummy plug from the overflow fitting of the condensate container, and
connect the overflow tube (item 18) with its pipe elbow to the overflow fitting.
Use the Y-fitting (Item 13) and the threaded hose connection for hose, 8 1 (Item 15), of the Drain Set to
connect the overflow tube to the drain, together with the drain connection of the MELAdem®45 reverse-
osmosis system.
Install the overflow tube in such a manner that the tube passes continuously downward, without any up-
ward curve. The maximum permissible level difference between the drain fitting on the trap and the overflow
fitting on the condensate container is + 0.5 meters.

Tests for proper functioning
Test for water feed / test for leaks in installation work
Prepare the MELAdem®45 reverse-osmosis system for operation and fill the accumulator (pressure tank).
Switch on the autoclave. The signal lamp for water [33] will light up, to indicate that there is insufficient
water supply. The control unit for external water filling will then open, and treated water will flow into the
water storage tank of the autoclave. When the required level is reached in the water storage tank, and
the float switch has initiated, the leak monitor (shuts off running water) will close and will stop the flow of
water. Then the user must visually inspect the entire installation for leaks.
Test for overflow of the autoclave
This test is carried out by blocking the float switch in the water storage tank of the autoclave. The user
must then check to ensure that the inflowing water is safely drained out through the overflow system.
Test for overflow of the condensate container (if installed)
Fill up the condensate container up to the overflow fitting. Then start the autoclave program again.
Check to ensure that the surplus condensate and residual water safely flow out into the overflow drain
system provided.
Test for leak monitor (shuts off running water) (if installed)
Moisten the sensor of the leak monitor to ensure that the system properly functions. It should issue a
warning signal.

3.5.5 Quality checking of the water __________________________________________________________
This autoclave which you have purchased represents a top-quality German product. It is designed for long
service life — a useful life which can be maximized by observing the proper operating procedures. For this
reason, the Vacuklav®31 features an automatic warning system which, for example, prevents it from being
unintentionally operated with normal tap water (which would cause scale to form and produce serious dam-
age to the autoclave).
For operation of the autoclave, be sure to use only distilled or demineralized water (aqua dest / aqua dem)
which is in accordance with the stipulations set forth in DIN EN 285 or German VDE 510.
Please consult Section 2.3.2 of this manual for more details on water quality, and on the possibilities for pur-
chasing suitable water.
In order to prevent damage to the instruments being sterilized, and to the autoclave itself, the Vacuklav®31
features an integrated testing function for checking water quality (conductivity) in two warning stages. After
the program is started, the system checks the quality of the water in the storage tank. The first warning stage
signals poor water quality in the display, in order that the operator can take the necessary action.
Press the start/stop button [19] once.

These displays alternate every three (3) seconds. The selected program will continue to run, however, if the
operator again presses the start/stop button [19].

In the second warning stage, the malfunction displays alternate every three (3) seconds, and the malfunction
lamp [35] lights up.

In such a case, the protective system will not allow the Vacuklav®31 to start, in order to protect the auto-
clave and the instrument. The system will not start until the water in the water storage tank is replaced by
better-quality water. Then press the button for acknowledging fault reports [23] and finally press the start /
stop button [19] to start the program.
3.6 Vacuum test ___________________________________________________________
Shut the door of the autoclave; the signal lamp for "door open" [34] will then go out. Use the program-
selection button [18] to select the vacuum test program. The signal lamp for vacuum test [29] will then light
up. Then start the program by pressing the start / stop button.

The vacuum test will begin after a period of five (5) minutes has elapsed. During this time, the autoclave
system will balance itself. The test itself lasts ten (10) minutes.
If the system determines a leakage rate of < 1.3 mbar/min, the test is considered successful, and the follow-
ing completion report will be displayed at the end of the program:

The following display appears after an unsuccessful vacuum test:

If the test is unsuccessful, check the door gasket and the sealing surface on the chamber, and clean them if
required. Then repeat the vacuum test.
If the vacuum test is once again unsuccessful, please contact your MELAG dealer, since it is possible that
sterilization cycles can no longer be satisfactorily carried out.
If the user connects a printer to the Vacuklav®31, a report of sterilization cycle can additionally be printed
out.
3.7 Test run _______________________________________________________________
In order to check for proper functioning of the Vacuklav®31, carry out a sterilization cycle without instru-
ments. Use the program-selection button [18] to choose the program "Instruments unwrapped." Then press
the start / stop button [19]. After the program has successfully run, the following will appear in the display:

The displays shows the maximum values for pressure and temperature achieved. If the user has connected
a printer, it will print out a report.
3.8 Interfacing a printer _____________________________________________________
The Vacuklav®31 unit has been provided with a serial printer interface: this interface enables connection of
the MELAprint® 40 (dot-matrix printer) as an option. The user can then print out reports of the programs
executed.
If the customer purchases the Vacuklav®31 with printer or without the printer, and later decides to retrofit by
connecting the MELAprint® 40, the printer interface on the Vacuklav®31 must be enabled before the printer
can be interfaced.
Installation:
The cables contained in the printer package as delivered are for electrical power and data transfer. Plug in
the power cable to the jacks for power [75]. Plug in the cable as interface, at the socket [74] on the rear of
the autoclave, and at the printer in the socket provided.
Make sure that enough paper has been installed in the printer.
In its initial operating state printer is "Not installed." To install it, please proceed as follows:
1. Switch off the Vacuklav 31.
2. Press and hold down the buttons "+" and "-" [17] and the program selector [18] all at the same time, and
switch the power switch [15] on.
3. You are now in the service program (you see "Record output"). Press button "+" [17] until you reach "Ex-
ternal printer."
4. Acknowledge by pressing the button "Program select" [18]. When you press "start/stop" [19], you have
installed the printer.
3.9 VDE stipulations ________________________________________________________
According to VDE stipulations presently valid, this device is not suitable for application in potentially explo-
sive environments. This device may be serviced only by the manufacturer, or by personnel expressly au-
thorized by the manufacturer (i.e., a specialist dealer, or the MELAG Customer Service Department).
3.10 Safety instructions _____________________________________________________
After opening the door of the autoclave, do not touch exposed hot metal parts. These parts can cause
burns to the bare skin. Use tray lifter to take out trays which are still hot. Use suitable hand protection
to remove other sterilization containers.
Do not open the door until the system has signaled that the pressure in the chamber has normalized.
This is signaled by a "0" in the display. The autoclave chamber can release small amounts of residual
steam when the door is opened.
Only persons authorized by the MELAG company, who use original spare parts in their service work, may
service this device.
Do not open the enclosure of the autoclave before unplugging the power plug from its socket.
When installing an external water-treatment unit, it is absolutely necessary to install the overflow system
and to test it by performing a trial run according to the instructions given above, to ensure that it in fact
functions properly.
Empty the water storage tank before moving the autoclave.
Do not move the autoclave when it contains water.
Do not use this autoclave to sterilize liquids.
