How to use the MCS operating manual
Before you take your first drive, please make yourself familiar with the MCS operating unit and the functions it sup
ports. Read through these operating instructions carefully and, if necessary, refer to the operating instructions of your
vehicle.
The operating instructions are divided into 6 chapters:
Introduction: An overview of the operating and display elements as well as explanation of the asic functions.
Audio: Information on the radio, tape, single CD player and CD changer equipment.
Telephone: Explanation of the telephone functions.
Navigation: How to enter your destination, selecting your route, route guidance, how to use the route memory, and
selecting a detour.
System settings: Here you will find information on sound and display settings.
Index: Search items to help you find exactly what you are looking for.

Operation - MCS and telephone
A Warning!
In order to avoid distractions which could lead to
an accident, system settings should be entered
with the vehicle at standstill and the system
should be operated by the driver only when traffic
conditions permit
Bear in mind that at a speed of just 30 m p h
(approximately 50 km/h), your car is covering a
distance of 50 feet (approximately 14 m) every sec
ond
MCS navigation supplies you with information to help
you select your route more easily and guides you conve
niently and safely to your destination. For safety’s sake,
you should not use some of the functions, such as enter
ing the destination, unless your vehicle is stationary
(electronic key in the steering lock at position 1).
The navigation system does not supply any informa
tions on stop signs, yield signs, traffic regulations or
traffic safety rules This always remains your per
sonal responsibility

Operation safety
Any alterations made to electronic components
and the software can cause malfunctions
The radio, amplifier, CD changer and telephone are
interconnected Therefore, when one of the compo
nents is defective or has not been removed/
replaced properly this may impair the function of
other components
These malfunctions might seriously impair the
operating safety of your vehicle
We recommend that you have any service work or
alternations on electronic components done in an
authorized Mercedes-Benz Center

Using the MCS (Modular Control System) operating
unit it is possi le to operate the radio, tape deck, single
CD player, CD changer, telephone and navigation sys
tems and to adjust the system settings.
Introductions
Introduction Audio Telephone
The MCS unit is equipped with a key panel (1), a rotary/
push- utton (2), a num er keypad with the zoom
keys (3), a joystick (4), a softkey panel (5) and a color
display screen (6) as the displaying element. All of the
functions are displayed on the screen. This includes
menus, lists, maps, sym ols and information windows.
The joystick is used to select and confirm the menu
fields.
You will find information on the operating and display
elements pertaining to each system at the eginning of
the corresponding chapter.
Rotary/push- utton
By pressing the utton (2) you can switch the MCS on
and off.
By turning the utton you can raise or lower the vol
ume.

Key
This key lowers and raises the front of the control panel.
Behind the front panel are the cassette slot and the CD
slot for the audio CD or for the navigation CD.
If the display is in the down position for more than 20
seconds , 2 successive eeps will e heard. Return the
display to its normal position.
AWarning!
A lowered control panel can easily be damaged, so
as soon as the cassette or the CD is ejected, close
the control panel Do not place anything on the low
ered control panel
Key
This key ena les you to alter an incorrect input.
Number keypad
Use the keys to la s y to enter telephone num ers
and transmission frequencies, they can also e used to
select radio stations, CD tracks and CD's.

Key and tBsrW
These keys changes the map magnification ratio in the
navigation mode.
Key EH 1
This key starts the navigation operation in the naviga
tion menu.
Key 1131
This key during navigation operation repeats the last
spoken manuveur command.
Joystick
The joystick is the main operating element for activat
ing equipment functions and su menus via the menu
fields.

Activate these functions as follows:
1 Push the joystick in the direction you want to move
the cursor on the display. Select the desired menu
field y positioning the cursor on it.
2 Push the joystick to a r :■ ■ ::■ W^ or K 9 t0
start rewind or search functions in the radio, tape or
CD mode.
3 Press the joystick to confirm your selection.
The selected function will activate, or a su menu
may appear or a selection will e confirmed.
Softkeys M. ^
With the softkeys the su menus and functions
which appear a ove the softkeys on the display can e
activated.
Key y ^U
This key starts a telephone call.
Key E 3 3
This key ends a telephone call.

The information/status line (1) indicates the active sys
tem (e.g.: FM for radio). The current system settings and
functions displayed appear in the middle of the screen
(7). The menu field for the softkey functions (8) appears
at the ottom of the screen. The functions can e acti
vated y pressing the softkeys Q elow the icon.

Switch on:
Press rotary/push- utton (1). The MCS operating unit is
switched on.
The MCS will also switch on when the electronic key in
the steering lock is turned to position 1 or 2 if the MCS
has een switched off y turning the electronic key in
the steering lock to position 0 or removed.

The MCS can also e switched on if the electronic key is
not inserted in the steering lock, ut it will switch itself
off automatically after one hour.
MCS switches on the system which was last active and
displays the corresponding menu.
Press the utton marked for the component you would
like to switch on (e.g. the Q^Q).
Switch off:
Press the rotary/push- utton (1). The MCS operating
unit will switch off.
The MCS also will e switched off if the electronic key
in the steering lock is turned to position 0 or removed.

Audio functions for radio, tape and CD:
The selected volume level applies to all of the audio
functions.
Telephone function:
The selected volume level applies only to the telephone
function.
Navigation function
Raising the volume difference - turn the rotary/push
utton (1) to the left (clockwise)
Lowering the volume difference - turn the rotary/push
utton (1) to the right (counter clockwise)
During a navigation announcement you can select the
volume difference etween the volume of the audio
source and the navigation voice.
Note:
During the announcement the volume of the audio
source will e lowered.

Pop-up screen message: DISPLAY IS TOO HOT...
DISPLAY IS TOO HOT
LIGHT WILL BE SHUT OFF

If the message “DISPLAY IS TOO HOT ...” appears, the
display is too hot. For protection the light will e shut
off. When the display has cooled down the light will e
automatically switched on.

If the power supply to the MCS has een interrupted,
“PLEASE ENTER SECURITY CODE” will appear on the
display when it is next switched on. The MCS will only
work after the five digit code has een entered using the
num er keypad.
The code num er is shown on a sticker in the owner’s
portfolio.

Switch the MCS on, see page 8. “PLEASE ENTER SECU
RITY CODE” will appear on the display. Use the num er
keys to enter the desired security code, e.g.
MM H fE U H I ■ ■ for 27001.
After entering the correct numerical code press the soft-
key Q “OK”, the MCS starts. If a wrong num er is
entered you have to enter the complete numerical code
again.
If an incorrect numerical code has een entered and
confirmed, “PLEASE ENTER SECURITY CODE" will
reappear on the display. The correct code must e
entered once again. If an incorrect code is entered three
times, “WAIT” will appear on the display and the MCS
will e locked out for a out 10 minutes. If after 10 min
utes an incorrect code is entered again, “WAIT” will
appear again and the MCS will e locked out for a out
10 minutes. After that you have to wait 1 hour to re
enter the code.
Note:
The lockout time will only elapse if the MCS remains
switched on.

Switching on the radio:
Press ^ 0 0 . The radio will switch on.
The station last tuned will egin to play. On FM and AM
the frequency will appear in the display.
Note:
The telephone and navigation functions can e used
while the radio is on.
Switching off the radio:
Switch to the tape, single CD or CD changer mode or
switch off the MCS.
