1 Introduction
1.1 Description
The Liquid Handling Station can be combined with sample changers
equipped with a robotic arm. Depending on the swing direction, either
the left-handed (6.2841.120) or the right-handed (6.2841.130) version of
the Liquid Handling Station is used.
The Liquid Handling Station consists of two function units:
Rinsing unit
The rinsing unit is equipped with a two-pipe system.
The interior pipe is for rinsing the sample tube.
The outer pipe is for the disposing of liquids and collecting the overflow
from the interior tube.
Dilution unit
The dilution unit is used for the fully automated production of diluted sol-
utions.
The Liquid Handling Station must be reconfigured for the sample dilution
function. In order to obtain a homogeneous dilution, it is important that
the concentrate be mixed with the dilution medium. A homogeneous dilu-
tion is achieved by installing the magnetic stirrer (2.741.0010) in the Liq-
uid Handling Station.

1.3 Safety instructions
1.3.1 General notes on safety
WARNING
This instrument may only be operated in accordance with the specifica-
tions in this documentation.
This instrument exhibited no flaws in terms of technical safety at the time
it left the factory. To preserve this status and ensure non-hazardous opera-
tion of the instrument, the following instructions must be observed care-
fully.
1.3.2 Electrical safety
The electrical safety when working with the instrument is ensured as part
of the international standard IEC 61010.
WARNING
Only personnel qualified by Metrohm are authorized to carry out service
work on electronic components.
WARNING
Never open the housing of the instrument. The instrument could be
damaged by this. There is also a risk of serious injury if live components
are touched.
There are no parts inside the housing which can be serviced or replaced
by the user.
Mains voltage
WARNING
An incorrect mains voltage can damage the instrument.
Only operate this instrument with a mains voltage specified for it (see
rear panel of the instrument).

Protection against electrostatic charges
WARNING
Electronic components are sensitive to electrostatic charges and can be
destroyed by discharges.
Do not fail to pull the mains cable out of the mains connection socket
before you set up or disconnect electrical plug connections at the rear
of the instrument.
1.3.3 Flammable solvents and chemicals
WARNING
All relevant safety measures are to be observed when working with
flammable solvents and chemicals.
￭Set up the instrument in a well-ventilated location (e.g. fume cup-
board).
￭Keep all sources of flame far from the workplace.
￭Clean up spilled liquids and solids immediately.
￭Follow the safety instructions of the chemical manufacturer.
1.3.4 Recycling and disposal
This product is covered by European Directive 2002/96/EC, WEEE – Waste
from Electrical and Electronic Equipment.
The correct disposal of your old equipment will help to prevent negative
effects on the environment and public health.
More details about the disposal of your old equipment can be obtained
from your local authorities, from waste disposal companies or from your
local dealer.

3 Installation
The installation of the Liquid Handling Station is accomplished in three
main steps.
1. Preparing the Liquid Handling Station.
2. Mounting and aligning the Liquid Handling Station on the sample
changer.
3. Defining the work positions of the sample tube for the Liquid Han-
dling Station.
3.1 Preparing the Liquid Handling Station
If the Liquid Handling Station is to be used for dilutions, then it must be
converted.
The following instruments are required for this purpose:
￭Liquid Handling Station
– Left-handed version, 6.2841.120
or
– Right-handed version, 6.2841.130
￭Magnetic stirrer, 2.741.0010
CAUTION
Use caution and do not apply excessive force when carrying out the fol-
lowing procedures.
The conversion is carried out through the following steps:
Removing the magnetic stirrer dummy
1Remove the mixing vessel from the main body by hand.

2Unscrew the three screws connecting the main body with the sup-
port bracket and remove the entire holding mechanism.

3Unscrew the two screws on the base of the main body and pull out
the magnetic stirrer dummy.

Preparing the magnetic stirrer
1Unscrew the two screws of the magnetic stirrer (2.741.0010) and
remove the clamping fastener. The clamping fastener is no longer
used in this application.

Installing the magnetic stirrer
1Insert the magnetic stirrer from below into the main body and place
the connection cable in the corresponding recess.

2Insert the two screws and tighten them.

3Place the previously removed holding mechanism against the main
body and connect the two parts with the three screws.

4Mount the mixing vessel and press it all the way down.
NOTE
Observe the recess on the bottom rim of the mixing vessel for
positioning.
It must snap into the main body.

Ensure that no damage is caused to the connection cable from
crushing.

3.2 Mounting the Liquid Handling Station
The Liquid Handling Station requires precise mounting and alignment in
order to function properly with the entire system.
CAUTION
Faulty, imprecise assembly
The components could become damaged during operation if assembled
in a faulty and imprecise manner.
￭Observe the assembly sequence.
￭Observe instrument movements during setup and stop in a timely
fashion if necessary.
The following description refers to the assembly of a left-handed Liquid
Handling Station. The right-handed version is assembled in the same way
but mirror-reversed.

Placing the Liquid Handling Station on the guide
1Attach the Liquid Handling Station to the assembly rail (11-4) with
the clamping fastener (11-3).
2Secure the Liquid Handling Station temporarily in place with the
screw (11-2).
Aligning the Liquid Handling Station with the rack
1Loosen the screws (11-1) of the base plate until you can shift the
Liquid Handling Station with the support bracket.
2Shift the Liquid Handling Station with the support bracket until the
main body is positioned at an even distance (see Figure 12, page
12) of 0.5 to 1 mm from the edge of the sample rack.

3Retighten the screws (11-1) to the base plate.
