1.1 Introduction
This documentation describes the non-contact thickness measurement of endless belt/
strips and plates. Please observe the following safety instructions when you use the
measuring system. In addition to this information, it is important that you follow the in-
structions in the individual chapters of the manual.
The measuring system described in this manual complies with the requirements of the
“DIN EN 60204.1 Electrical equipment of machines” standard and has been delivered in
a fault-free condition. In order to maintain this condition and ensure reliable usage, the
operator must observe the instructions and warnings on the measuring system and in
this manual.
It is necessary to contact Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG before the meas-
uring system is modified or is combined in any way with parts and/or systems which
have not been approved by Micro-Epsilon or which are not described in this manual.
This manual is an important part of the measuring system and must be read carefully
before the measuring system is put into operation for the first time. This manual contains
important information concerning safety and maintenance. It must be kept at the measur-
ing system for this reason.
1.1.1 Validity
This manual is valid for MTS 8202.LLT, Item No. 4350127.347, manufactured by Mi-
cro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG. The manufacturer reserves the right to make
technical changes for the purpose of further development. In this case, an appendix to
this manual will be provided. The purchaser is required to check the version of the man-
ual and to include every addendum concerning technical innovations. The manufacturer
shall accept no liability for the correctness and completeness of the information stated in
this manual. The reader is requested to inform Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co.
KG if any errors are found.
1.1.2 Software Security
The following important information must be observed for all application software based
on thicknessCONTROL. The modification of hardware or software components in the
thicknessCONTROL industrial PC is essentially not permitted. Exceptions must be
approved of in writing by Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG. The automat-
ic start of software components that do not originate from Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik
GmbH & Co. KG and which run in the background of the measurement process is not
permitted. When using virus scanners, the operator must be aware that the measuring
system will be restricted and that malfunctions may occur with respect to real-time ca-
pabilities. Thus the measuring system cannot be reliably operated during this time. The
integration of systems from Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG into networks
must only be performed by qualified personnel. In doing so, the system operator is re-
sponsible for security on the network.
Micro-Epsilon Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG shall accept no claims arising from non-ob-
servance of these safety instructions.

1.2 System description
This section explains how the measuring system works. The task of measuring system
MTS 8202.LLT is non-contact thickness measurement of belt/strip material.

The measuring method of the measuring system is based on double-sided distance
measurement, consisting of two laser-optical triangulation scanners, which measure the
target from opposite positions. The thickness of the target is calculated in the IPC touch-
screen.

The thickness is measured without involved placement of the measured object. The main
advantage is that vibrations of the target do not result in inaccurate measurement. The
positional tolerance of the target is determined from the working gap, the start of meas-
uring range (SMR), see Fig. 2, and the measuring range (MR) of the sensors (triangula-
tion scanners).

System operation assumes knowledge of the operating instructions.
1.3.1 Symbols Used
The following symbols are used in these operating instructions:
CAUTION Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in
minor or moderate injury.
NOTICE
Indicates a situation that may result in property damage if not avoid-
ed.
Indicates a user action.
iIndicates a tip for users.
Measurement Indicates hardware or a software button/menu.
1.3.2 Intended Use
-The MTS 8202.LLT measuring system is used for non-contact thickness measure-
ments of belts/strips and plates.
-The measuring system must only be operated within the limits specified in the techni-
cal data, see 9.3.
-The measuring system must be used in such a way that no persons are endangered
or machines are damaged in the event of malfunction or total failure of the measuring
system.
-Take additional precautions for safety and damage prevention in case of safety-related
applications.

with improper use. The personal protective equipment (PPE) necessary must be pro-
vided by the operating company (customer).
-Protective equipment: All protective equipment, including the devices installed by the
operating company, must be properly installed and functional before each start-up.
Safety devices may only be removed when the system is shut down and protected
against restarting of the measuring system (e.g. padlock on the main switch).
-Informal safety precautions: The operating instructions must always be kept at the
measuring system. In addition to the operating instructions, the generally applicable
and local regulations for accident prevention and environmental protection must also
be provided and observed. All safety instructions and hazard warnings on the measur-
ing system must be kept in legible condition and replaced as needed.
-Safety precautions in normal operation: Before the measuring system is switched
on, it must be ensured that nobody can be endangered from the measuring system
startup. The measuring system must be checked for external damage and the safety
equipment for functionality at least once a day.
1.3.4 Maintenance and Repair
-Maintenance and repair: Specified adjustment, maintenance, and inspection work
must be carried out at the specified intervals.
-Structural modifications to the measuring system: No modifications, attachments to,
or conversions of the measuring system may be made without the permission of the
manufacturer. All conversion measures require the written approval of Micro-Epsilon
Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG. Parts of the system that are not in trouble-free condition
must be replaced immediately. In addition, only original spare and wear parts must be
used. Parts obtained from third parties are not guaranteed to have the correct design
with regard to load and safety.
-Cleaning and disposal of the measuring system: The substances and materials used
must be handled and disposed of properly, in particular when:
working on lubrication systems and equipment
cleaning with solvents
-System noise: The continuous sound pressure level emitted by the system is less than
70 db(A).
1.4 Training of Personnel
-Only trained and instructed personnel are permitted to work on the system.
-The responsibilities of personnel for operating, retooling, and maintenance must be
clearly specified. Personnel undergoing training are only permitted to work on the
system under the supervision of an experienced person.
Only trained personnel are permitted to operate the controller.
The training should be acknowledged in writing.

1.5 Foreseeable Misuse
If the target/strip material flow has started, the calibration component holder may not be
retracted. Collision of the target/strip material with the calibration part holder.
During the reference measurement, the target/strip material flow must not be started.

1.6 Liability for Material Defects
All components of the device have been checked and tested for functionality at the facto-
ry. However, if defects occur despite our careful quality control, MICRO-EPSILON or your
dealer must be notified immediately.

The liability for material defects is 12 months from delivery. Within this period, defective
parts, except for wearing parts, will be repaired or replaced free of charge, if the device
is returned to MICRO-EPSILON with shipping costs prepaid. Any damage that is caused
by improper handling, the use of force or by repairs or modifications by third parties is
not covered by the liability for material defects. Repairs are carried out exclusively by
MICRO-EPSILON.
Further claims can not be made. Claims arising from the purchase contract remain unaf-
fected. In particular, MICRO-EPSILON shall not be liable for any consequential, special,
indirect or incidental damage. In the interest of further development, MICRO-EPSILON
reserves the right to make design changes without notification. For translations into other
languages, the German version shall prevail.

2. Laser Safety
2.1 scanCONTROL 2900-100
The scanCONTROL 2900-100 sensors operate with a semiconductor laser with a wave-
length of 658 nm (visible/red). Operation of the laser is indicated visually by the LED on
the sensor.
When operating the scanCONTROL 2900-50 sensors, the relevant regulations in accord-
ance with DIN EN 60825-1 (IEC 60825, Part 1, dated 07/2015) and the applicable acci-
dent prevention regulation must be observed.
The housings of the optical scanCONTROL 2900-50 sensors may only be opened by
authorized personnel, see 1.6. For repair and service purposes, the sensors must always
be sent to the manufacturer.
2.2 Laser class 2M
The scanCONTROL 2900-100 sensors with a max. laser output up to 8 mW, see 9.4
(Section 3.2) have been assigned to laser class 2M (IIM).
The following applies accordingly:
With class 2M laser devices, the eye is not endangered by random, brief exposure to
laser radiation, i.e. exposure times of up to 0.25 s.
Directly looking into the beam can be dangerous, if the eye-closure reflex is consciously
suppressed, e.g., during adjusting. Directly looking into the beam with optical devices,
such as magnifying glasses, is dangerous.
Class 2M laser devices may be used without further protective measures if you do not
intentionally look into the laser beam or into specular-reflected radiation for more than
0.25 s.
Because the presence of the eyelid protective reflex should not normally be assumed,
one should deliberately close the eyes or turn away immediately if the laser beam hits
the eye.

Laser warning signs for Germany have already been printed on the device. The warning
signs for the EU and US are included and must be attached for the appropriate region by
the user prior to initial operation of the device.
Class 2M laser devices are not subject to reporting and a laser protection officer is not
required. Mark the laser area clearly and permanently.
iIf both warning signs are covered over when the unit is installed, the user must ensure that supplementary warning signs are attached at the installation location.

2.4 Through-Beam Light Barrier
An opto-electronic sensor is used to detect the material height/thickness, see 9.6. This
through-beam light barrier detects fluctuations of the material in horizontal position and
consists of a transmitter and a receiver.

Mechanical commissioning is described in this third volume of the manual. The mechani-
cal structure and its functioning begin in the second chapter with the base frame compo-
nents. Next, calibration is explained. The electrical connections of the measuring system
complete the third volume.
3.1 General Points Before Initial Operation
The MTS 8202.LLT measuring system achieves a resolution in the micrometer range.
For this reason, the mechanical components and sensors are matched to one another in
every detail. Insofar as is constructively possible, mechanical assemblies and individual
parts which are not subject to adjustment have been used. Such parts/assemblies which
have to be adjusted for functional reasons have been adjusted by Micro-Epsilon.
The commissioning of MTS 8202.LLT does not require any adjustment work by the cus-
tomer. The customer is responsible for providing a protective device to avoid a collision
between the strip material (target) and the measuring system.
3.2 Basic Components

The base frame with the upper belt and lower belt are the core elements of the system.
The base frame accommodates the triangulation scanners and the remaining compo-
nents. The base frame consists of a solid aluminum frame.
The linear guide and the drive for the horizontal displacement of the base frame are on
the bottom of the measuring system
-to position the measuring system on the target,
-to calibrate the measuring system with the calibration object (=reference).

3.2.2 Sensors
The two triangulation scanners measure without contact the thickness of the strip as they
pass between the two upper and lower belts of the measuring system.
iAn optional air purge at the sensors in the upper and lower belts reduces dust ac- cumulation, etc. on the glass panes for the sensors.

3.2.3 Calibration part
For a reference measurement, a calibration part is used to detect deviations. The hold-
er for the calibration part is inserted into the measuring gap of the measuring system
as necessary. The respective calibration component is (observe bevel) mounted in the
correct position in the calibration component holder. After the reference measurement,
the measuring system automatically repositions the holder for the calibration part in the
parking position.

3.2.4 Purge Air – Laser Scanner
Laser scanners are based on an optical principle. To avoid possible impairment, e.g.,
dust on the lower belt's laser scanner, the glass surfaces on the laser beam emission and
receiver are constantly blown onto to prevent dirt deposits, see Fig. 9.

3.3 Drive and Linear Guide
The base frame can optionally be positioned horizontally level using an electrical drive
unit and toothed belt drive. An encoder, mounted axially on the drive motor, measures
the position of the base frame and thus permits precise assignment of the measured
values in transverse direction to the measured object.

3.4 Cable carrier
The cable carrier (1), see Fig. 14 is attached to the base frame and supplies power to
all the components that are on the base frame. These develop a “polygon effect” during
movement, because individual chain connections are kinked. In a precise measuring
system, this effect negatively affects the measured result. For this reason, a special cable
drag that does not have a polygon effect is used. This ensures smooth running and pre-
cise measurements.

3.5 Compressed Air Supply
The compressed air is used for the movement of the calibration part, see Fig. 10 and for
air purging the sensors, see Fig. 9.
Commissioning work performed by the customer:

The maintenance unit consists of a filter control unit for preparing the compressed air
and generating the working pressure. The compressed air is monitored electronically.
In the event of a drop in the nominal pressure from 5 bar to under 4 bar, a signal is sent
to the measuring system’s controller. The controller forwards this information to the user
interface.

3.6.1 Signal Lamp
To visualize the operating states over long distances, the system features a signal
lamp(1), which is mounted on the control cabinet of the measuring system.
The signal lamp is in the control cabinet of the measuring system, see Fig. 16.

3.6.2 Emergency Stop
The measuring system does not have its own EMERGENCY stop button. The measuring
system uses the emergency stop signal from the production line. If an emergency STOP
signal is detected, the measuring system will terminate the thickness measurement. If the
emergency stop is canceled by production control, the sensor system travels back to the
home position.

3.6.3 On/Off Switch
The system’s On/Off switch (2) is located on the control cabinet, see Fig. 16. The On/Off
switch disconnects all poles of the system from the power supply grid. The position of
the On/Off switch is monitored by the software.

Avoid damage when transporting the measuring system, particularly to any protruding
parts.

Only raise the measuring system a few centimeters; this prevents the measuring system
from tipping over.
Avoid any unnecessary jolting of the measuring system, for example due to fast lowering
of the measuring system from a forklift.
The measuring system must not be lifted on one side and then pulled.
iYou will need at least two people and a forklift to transport the measuring system.
Transport the measuring system and its packaging to the destination with a forklift.
Open the wooden crate of the measuring system. Use a rechargeable electric
screwdriver, bit size T20.

Avoid any lateral forces on the sidewalls of the wooden crate.

Loosen the transport locks on the lashing straps/cable ties, etc. on the base frame,
see 4.2.
Place the round slings onto the four transport eyebolts. Attach the round slings to a
cross-member. Do not lift the measuring system.
Ensure that the load direction points straight up.

iThe measuring system must in principle be transported using the four transport eyebolts and a cross-member.
Remove the four screws of the transport locking closures on the bottom of the
wooden crate. Use an Allen (hexagonal) key and an open-end wrench to do this.

Lift the measuring system by about 6 cm and remove the bottom of the transport
crate.
Position the measuring system at its final destination. Use a crane or a forklift for
this.
Put the measuring system down carefully. Avoid jerky movements when placing the
measuring system on the floor.
iThe measuring system must not be lifted on one side and then pulled. Prevent any damage, particularly to the projecting parts (for example the monitor or keyboard)
while transporting the measuring system.
Integrate the measuring system into your industrial environment.
