Mus uloskeletal Disorders
Use of game controllers, ke boards, mice, or other electronic input devices ma be linked to serious injuries or disorders.
When pla ing video games, as with man activities, ou ma experience occasional discomfort in our hands, arms, shoulders, neck, or other
parts of our bod . However, if ou experience s mptoms such as persistent or recurring discomfort, pain, throbbing, aching, tingling, numbness,
burning sensation, or stiffness, DO NOT IGNORE THESE WARNING SIGNS. PROMPTLY SEE A QUALIFIED HEALTH PROFESSIONAL, even if
s mptoms occur when ou are not pla ing a video game. S mptoms such as these can be associated with painful and sometimes permanentl
disabling injuries or disorders of the nerves, muscles, tendons, blood vessels, and other parts of the bod . These musculoskeletal disorders
(MSDs) include carpal tunnel s ndrome, tendinitis, tenos novitis, vibration s ndromes, and other conditions.
While researchers are not et able to answer man questions about MSDs, there is general agreement that man factors ma be linked to their
occurrence, including medical and ph sical conditions, stress and how one copes with it, overall health, and how a person positions and uses their
bod during work and other activities (including pla ing a video game). Some studies suggest that the amount of time a person performs an
activit ma also be a factor.
Some guidelines that ma help ou work and pla more comfortabl and possibl reduce our risk of experiencing an MSD can be found in the
Health Gaming Guide at www.xbox.com. These guidelines address topics such as:
• Positioning ourself to use comfortable, not awkward, postures.
• Keeping our hands, fingers, and other bod parts relaxed.
• Taking breaks.
• Developing a health lifest le.
If ou have questions about how our own lifest le, activities, or medical or ph sical condition ma be related to MSDs, see a qualified health
professional.
