GENERAL INFORMATION
Midian’s TRE-2 can convert a DC remote into a tone remote or upgrade an existing tone remote controller to have
more function tones. The TRE-2 can be added to a Telco Butt-In Test Set to use as a test instrument for tone
remote lines. The TRE-2 generates the high-level 2175 Hz guard tone, followed by the desired function tone and
then the continuous low-level 2175 Hz guard tone.

3
HARDWARE INSTALLATION
Be certain to follow standard anti-static procedures when handling any of Midian’s products.
P1-4 – Black – Ground – Connect to the nearest ground point.
P1-2 – Red - +5.5 – 15 VDC – Connect to switched B+ in the radio.
P1-3 – Brown – Test Mode – Connecting this wire to B+ and pressing PTT puts the TRE-2 into a test mode. This
extends all of the tones to about 8 seconds each to facilitate setting the output level using pot R30.
P1-1 – Green – TX Tone Out – Connect to modulator circuit. Use high impedance point in radio. Low-Z will cause
low frequency roll-off across C10 output coupling cap and R31. In Low-Z mic circuits, it may be necessary to short
R31 and increase C10.
P1-5 – Blue – Alert Tone/Speaker Audio – Connect to high side of the speaker with the other side of the speaker
at ground. This allows the monitoring of the tones if desired. When using 20-40 Ohm speakers, the onboard
resistor in series with Q3 should be sufficient. When attaching this lead to a 4-8 Ohm speaker, add a 100-Ohm
resistor in series with the lead to limit current.
P1-11 – Gray – PTT In – Requires a logic low from the radio’s PTT switch. Sends either the Tone 1 (default = F1
1950 Hz) or Tone 2 (default = F2 1850 Hz) keying tone based on logic level at F1/F2 input.
P1-12 – Orange/White –Monitor – Grounding this lead transmits the monitor function tone.
P1-13 – Violet – F1/F2 Select – High or open selects Tone 1. Grounding this wire selects Tone 2.
HARDWARE ALIGNMENT
To set the alignments, connect the brown wire to B+ and the gray wire to ground. This puts the unit into Test
Mode which lengthens the tones to approximately 8 seconds each for alignment purposes.
Installation into a Balanced Audio Device:
Adjust R30 for the high-level 2175 Hz guard tone at a relative level of +10 dB, followed by the selected function
tone at a relative level of 0 dB, followed by low-level guard tone at –20 dB relative level.
Installation into a Two-Way Radio:
Set the modulation pot R30 to the transmitter’s maximum deviation using the high-level guard tone.

4
OPERATION
When the PTT input is taken to ground, the TRE-2 generates a high level 2175 Hz guard tone for 120 msec at a
relative level of +10 dB, followed by 40 msec of the selected function tone at a relative level of 0 dB followed by a
continuous low level guard tone at –20 dB relative level.
Selecting the Function Tone: When the violet wire is high or floating, F1 is selected. When the violet wire is
taken to ground F2 is selected. For selecting the function tone via the optional keypad, leave the violet wire high
or floating. Press the keypad digit corresponding to the desired function tone in the list below. After the desired
function tone is selected, grounding the PTT input will cause the high-level guard tone, followed by the selected
function tone and then by the continuous low-level guard tone. If the unit is powered down and then powered back
up the default frequencies will be restored.
