MinicomAdvancedSystemsLimited.
ThisdocumentprovidesinstallationandoperationinstructionsforMinicom’s
Smart216/232.Itisintendedforsystemadministratorsand networkmanagers,
and assumesthatreadershavea generalunderstanding ofnetworks, hardwareand
software.
Technicalprecautions
Thisequipmentgeneratesradiofrequencyenergyandifnotinstalledinaccordance
withthemanufacturer’sinstructions,maycauseradiofrequencyinterference.
ThisequipmentcomplieswithPart15,SubpartJoftheFCCrulesforaClassA
computingdevice. ThisequipmentalsocomplieswiththeClass Alimitsforradio
noiseemissionfromdigitalapparatussetoutintheRadioInterferenceRegulation
oftheCanadianDepartmentofCommunications. Theseaboverulesaredesignedto
providereasonableprotectionagainstsuchinterferencewhenoperatingthe

AllreferencesthroughoutthisguidetotheSmart216 referequallytotheSmart
232.Thetwounitsarefunctionallythesame. TheSmart216has16Serverports
and theSmart232has32Serverports.
TheSmart216 extendsyourKVM(keyboard, video, andmouse)fromserverswith
PS/2orUSBinterfacesup to30m/100ftaway. 2userscancontrol, monitorand
manageup to16 serverssimultaneously. Youcanconnecta PowerDistribution
Unit(PDU)forpowermanagement.
TheSmart216 isa cost-effectivehardwaresolution, forsecureKVMaccess &
controlof16 (32 fortheSmart232)computers/serversfromtheBIOS level-
independentoftheoperatingsystem.
TheSmart216 isbasedon Minicom’sinnovativeROCtechnologyinwhereby
computer/serverisdirectlyconnectedtotheswitchvia ROCdonglesusingonly
standardCAT5cableatadistanceofup to30m/100ftina starconfiguration. No
externalpowerisneededattheROC.

•Placecablesawayfromfluorescentlights,airconditioners, and machinesthat
arelikelytogenerateelectricalnoise
•PlacetheSmart216on a flat,cleananddrysurfaceorinstall ina rack
•Ensurethatthemaximumdistancebetweeneachcomputerand theSmart216,
doesnotexceed30m/100ft.
7.1Avoidinggeneral rack mountingproblems
Elevatedoperatingambienttemperature
Theoperatingambienttemperatureoftherackenvironmentmaybegreaterthan
theroomambientwheninstallingintoa closedormulti-unitrackassembly. So
install theequipmentinanenvironmentcompatiblewiththemaximumrated
ambienttemperature.
Reducedairflow
Installtheequipmentina rackinsucha waythattheamountofairflowrequired
forsafeoperationisnotcompromised. Leavea gapofatleast5cm/2”eachsideof
theSmart216.
Mechanicalloading
Mounttheequipmentintherackinsucha waythatahazardousconditionisnot
achievedduetounevenmechanicalloading.
Circuitoverloading
Whenconnectingtheequipmenttothesupplycircuit, considertheeffectthat
overloadingofcircuitsmighthaveon over-currentprotectionandsupplywiring.
Reliableearthingofrack-mountedequipmentshouldbemaintained. Giveattention
tosupplyconnectionsotherthandirectconnectionstothebranchcircuit(e.g. useof
powerstrips).

Bydefault, Smart216bootswithanautomaticallyassignedIP address froma
DHCP (DynamicHostConfigurationProtocol)serveronthenetwork. TheDHCP
serverprovidesa validIP address, gatewayaddress andsubnetmask.
YoucanidentifytheIP address fromtheOSD. AlsowherethereisnoDHCP
serversettheIP address via theOSDasfollows:
1.Fromthelocalkeyboard, press left Shift twice. TheOSDMainwindow
appears.SeeFigure10.

Smart216isconnected, DHCPprovidesautomaticIP assignment. (Displayedin
theOSD).
WhenDHCP isdisabled–(Recommended)–Youcanassigna fixedIP address to
theSmart216.ConsultyourNetworkAdministratorregardingtheuseofthe
DHCP.
WhenDHCP isdisabled,enter the IPAddress, SubnetMask, and Gateway as
givenbyyourNetworkAdministrator.

OncetheIP address issatisfactory, press ESCtwicetosavechangesandrestartthe
unit. Youcannowlogintothewebinterfacetocompletetheconfiguration, as
explainedbelow.

1.Openyourwebbrowser.
2.TypetheSmart216systemIP address –httporhttps://IPaddress/-and press
Enter. Theloginpageappears.

(bothlowercase).
4.Press Enter. ThewebinterfaceopensattheTargetspage. SeeFigure12.

11.2.1Adding auser
Toadd a user:
1.Click and typea nameanda password. Thepasswordmustbeat
least6characters–lettersornumbers,and mustnotincludetheusername,even
ifothercharactersareadded.
Note! Thefollowing“special”characters:&,<,>,”cannotbeusedforeither
theusernameorpassword.
Dependingonthesecuritylevelchosentheusernameandpasswordparameters
aredifferent. Seesection 13 on page20.
2.Selectthepermissiontypefromthe Permission box.
3.Click ,theuserappearsinthelistofusers.ThePermissioncolumn
showstheuserlevel(Administrator,User, ViewOnly).TheStatuscolumnshows
whethertheuserisblockedorunblocked,explainedinsection 11.2.3below.
11.2.2Deleting auser
Todeletea user:
1.Selecttheuserfromthelist.
2.Click .
3.Click ,thechangesaresaved.
11.2.3Blocking auser
Analternativetodeletinga userisblocking a user.Thismeansthattheuser’sname
and passwordisstored, buttheuserisunabletoaccess thesystem. Check Block to
blocka user.Uncheck Block toallowtheuseraccess.

RPSportoftheSmart216.
ConfigurethePowerManagementswitchasfollows:
1.Fromthemenu, click Power Management. The PowerManagement window
appears, see Figure16.

3.Click .Theappropriatenumberof ManagedbySockets and

5.Matchthesocketstotheservers. Foreachsocketselecttheservername
connectedtoitfromthedrop-downmenu.
Whenthereisa doubleortriplepowersupply, youneedtoassignmultiplesockets
tothesameKVMport.

Definetheaccess rightsofeachuserseparately.
Todo so:
1.Fromthemenu click User Targets. The User TargetsConfiguration window
appears, see Figure18.

3.Checktheserverstheusercanaccess (accordingtohisaccess permissions). To
selectall servers, press .
4.Click Apply, theselectionissaved.
