2.Introduction
TheSmart 108/116 IP extendsyourKVM(keyboard, video, and mouse)fromany
computerorserveroverTCP/IPvia LAN, WAN orInternetconnection. Nowyou
can control, monitorand manage up to8 /16 remote servers fromwhereveryou
are, inside oroutside the organization. The Smart 108/116 IP isa cost-effective
hardware solution, forsecure remote KVMaccess&controlof8 /16
computers/servers fromtheBIOS level-independentofthe OS. One localanalog
orone remote digitalIP usercan access and control8 /16 multi-platform(PS/2,
SUN, USB)servers.
TheSmart 108/116 IP isbased on Minicom’s innovative ROC technology in which
each computer/serverisdirectlyconnected tothe switch via ROC donglesusing
onlystandard CAT5cableata distance ofup to 30m/100ft in astarconfiguration.
No externalpowerisneeded atthe remote ROC.
TheSmart 108 IP and the Smart 116 IP are functionallythe same. The Smart 108
IP has8 Serverportsand the Smart 116 IP has16 Serverports.

8.1Avoiding general rackmounting problems
Elevated operating ambienttemperature
Theoperatingambienttemperature ofthe rackenvironmentmaybe greaterthan
the roomambientwhen installinginto a closed ormulti-unit rackassembly. So
installthe equipmentin an environmentcompatiblewith the maximumrated
ambienttemperature.
Reduced airflow
Install the equipmentin a rackin such a waythatthe amountofairflowrequired
forsafe operationisnotcompromised. Leave a gap ofatleast5cm/2” each side of
the Smart 108/116 IP.
Mechanicalloading
Mountthe equipmentinthe rackinsuch a waythata hazardouscondition isnot
achieved due to uneven mechanicalloading.
Circuitoverloading
When connectingthe equipmentto the supplycircuit,considerthe effectthat
overloadingofcircuitsmighthave on over-currentprotection and supplywiring.
Reliable earthingofrack-mountedequipmentshould be maintained. Give attention
to supplyconnectionsotherthan directconnectionsto the branch circuit (e.g. use of
powerstrips).

Rackmountthe Smart 108/116 IP usingthe supplied Rack-mountkit. The brackets
can be placed in 2 possiblepositions, see Figure 3.

Each computer/ serverisdirectlyconnected to the Smart 108/116 IPvia the
appropriate RoCorRICCusingCAT5 cable in a starconfiguration. No external
powerisneeded atthe remote RICC/ROCs. The RICC/ROCsdrawtheir power
fromthe computer’skeyboard port (RICC/ROC PS/2, SUN)orfromthe USBport
(RICC/ROC USB). The figuresbelowillustrate the RoCPS/2 and RoCUSB.

10.Initialsettings-DefaultIPaddress
Thefollowingsectionsprovide instructionsforsettingthe IP addressforthe Smart
108/116 IP unit. See Figure11 foran overviewofthe boot-up process.
Bydefault, Smart 108/116 IP bootswith an automaticallyassigned IP address from
a DHCP (Dynamic HostConfiguration Protocol)serveron the network. The DHCP
serverprovidesa valid IP address, gatewayaddressand subnetmask.
Toidentifythe IP address,the Smart 108/116 IP MAC address appears on the
underside ofthe Smart108/116 IP dialogbox. The device number(D.N.)can also
be found there.
Ifno DHCP serverisfoundon thenetwork, Smart 108/116 IP bootswiththe static
IP address:192.168.0.155.
Note! Ifa DHCP serverlaterbecomesavailable,the unit picksup the IP settings
fromDHCP server.To keep the static IP address, disable DHCP – explained in
section 12.1 on page 17.

11.Logging intotheWebinterface

Complete the initialsetupvia the Web configuration interface:
1. Open yourWeb browserand type theSmart 108/116 IP systemIP address -
https://IPaddress/-and press Enter.The loginpage appears, see Figure 12.

lowercase).

When firstconnectingto Smart 108/116 IP’s httpsconfigurationpage, 2 browser
securitywarningsappear. Click Yes to proceed.
Thefirstwarningdisappearsupon firstSmart 108/116 IP clientinstallation, when
Minicom’s rootcertificate isinstalled.
12.Network>Configuration
ConsultyourNetworkAdministratorforthe networksettings.
Devicename - Type a name forthe Smart 108/116 IP. Default device name
consistsoftheletter‘D’followed bythe6-digit devicenumber(D.N.)found onthe
silverlabelon the underside ofthe Smart 108/116 IP dialogbox. Ifthe DHCP
serverispublished intheDNS server, you mayconnecttothe Smart108/116 IP
usingthedevice name, asfollows:

TCPPort -Choose anyTCP port fromport#800 to65535. (When managed by
Centralized Management, the portnumbercan be changed fromthe management
interface ifneeded).

Notes
Firewallorroutersecurityaccesslistmustenableinbound communication through
the selected TCP portsforthe Smart 108/116 IP’s IP address. (DefaultTCP portis
900, default webinterface TCP port is443).
ForClientcomputeraccessfroma secured LAN,the selected portsshouldbe open
foroutbound communication.
12.1LAN
UnderLAN in Figure 13, isthe following:
Enable DHCP – When a DHCP serverisactive on the same networkto which
Smart 108/116 IP isconnected, DHCP providesautomatic IP assignment.
When DHCP isdisabled – (Recommended)– You can assign a fixed IP addressto
the Smart 108/116 IP.
ConsultyourNetworkAdministratorregardingthe use ofthe DHCP. Note! Where
you have accesstothe server– yourconfigured (ordefault) Smart 108/116 IP
device name willappearonthe DHCP server’sinterface, makingit easyto locate.
When DHCP isdisabled, enter the IPAddress, SubnetMask, and Default
Gateway for LAN 1, asgiven byyourNetworkAdministrator.

Minicom’s Centralized ManagementIP based systems, forsecurecontrolofservers
and networkdevices, powerand useradministration inthe datacenterenvironment.
TheCentralized Managementsystemscombine Out-Of-Band, KVMvia IP access
with modern ITstandardsand requirements.Theyare the mostcomprehensive
remote servermaintenance solutionsavailableinthe markettoday.
Enable Centralized Management -Checkthisoptionto allowSmart 108/116 IP
to be remotelymanaged bya Centralized Managementsystem.
Manager Auto Discovery – when checked, the Centralized Managementsystem
automaticallydetectsthe Smart 108/116 IP, if itresideson the same network
segment.
Manager IPAddress – IfSmart 108/116 IP resideson a differentsegment, type
the static IP address ofthe Centralized ManagementManager.(We advise typing
the static IP address ofthe Managereven if the Smart 108/116 IP resideson the
same networksegmentasthe Manager).
