safety warnings and guidelines. Please keep this manual in a safe place for future reference.
This device is intended for indoor use only.
Do not expose this device to water or moisture of any kind. Do not place drinks or
other containers with moisture on or near the device. If moisture does get in or on
the device, immediately unplug it from the power outlet and allow it to fully dry
before reapplying power.
Do not expose this device to excessively high temperatures. Do not place it in, on,
or near heat sources, such as a fireplace, stove, radiator, etc. Do not leave it in direct
sunlight.
Do not place or install this device in an area where it can be exposed to excessive
amounts of dust, humidity, oil, smoke, or combustible vapors.
Prior to operation, check the unit and power cord for physical damage. Do not use if
physical damage has occurred.
Before plugging the unit into a power outlet, ensure that the outlet provides the
same type and level of power required by the device.
Never unplug the unit by pulling on the power cord. Always grasp the connector
head or adapter body.
Ensure that power is turned off and disconnected before making any electrical
connections.
Take care to prevent damage to the power cord. Do not allow it to become
crimped, pinched, walked on, or become tangled with other cords. Ensure that the
power cord does not present a tripping hazard.
Clean using a soft, dry cloth only. Do not use chemical cleaners, solvents, or
detergents. For stubborn deposits, moisten the cloth with warm water.
This device has no user serviceable parts. Do not attempt to open, service, or
modify this device.

INTRODUCTION
This 4x4 HDMI® Matrix allows you to distribute any of up to four HDMI video sources to
any of up to four HDMI displays. It supports resolutions up to 4K@60Hz YUV 4:4:4 and high
definition, multichannel audio formats, such as Dolby TrueHD™ and DTS-HD Master
Audio™. It can be controlled using buttons on the front panel, the included IR remote
control, or RS-232 control from a computer.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW
Front Panel
1. Power LED: The LED illuminates when the matrix is powered off. The LED is off when
the unit is powered on.
2. Digital Display: The four digits display the number (1-4) of the video input for each
letter (A-D) of the video output.
3. POWER: Press the POWER switch to turn the unit on or off.
4. OUT X: Press the OUT X buttons to cycle through the available inputs for the
selected output. The digital display will respond by showing the number (1-4) of the
input under the letter of the output (A-D).

Rear Panel
1. OUT X: HDMI® connectors for connecting up to four HDMI displays.
2. IN X: HDMI connectors for connecting up to four HDMI source devices.
3. RS-232: Phoenix connector for connecting a PC for RS-232 remote control.
4. EDID: DIP switches for setting the Extended Display Identification Data (EDID),
which determines the resolution and audio settings for the input source devices.
5. DC 12V: DC barrel connector for attaching the included AC power adapter.
Remote Control
1. Power: Press the Power button to turn the unit on or
off.
2. Output X: Each Output section of buttons contains 4
number buttons and two arrow buttons. Press a
number button to directly assign the numbered input
(1-4) to the lettered output (A-D). Press the Left Arrow
button to cycle backwards through the list of
numbered inputs. Press the Right Arrow button the
cycle forwards through the list of numbered inputs.

SAMPLE CONNECTION DIAGRAM
INSTALLATION
Perform the following steps to install this matrix into your home theater system.
1. Ensure that all equipment to be connected is powered off and unplugged from its
power source.
2. Place or mount the matrix in its intended location.
3. Using a High Speed HDMI® Cable (not included), plug one end into the HDMI input
on one of your displays, then plug the other end into one of the OUT ports on the
matrix. Repeat for up to three additional displays.

4. Using a High Speed HDMI® Cable (not included), plug one end into one of the IN
ports on the matrix, then plug the other end into the HDMI output on one of your
HDMI video source devices. Repeat for up to three additional HDMI video source
devices.
5. (Optional) Using a 3-pin Phoenix connector (not included) and a DE-9 (DB-9) D-
subminiature connector, wire it for RS-232 transmission and reception, then plug
the Phoenix connector into the RS-232 connector and plug the D-sub connector
into one of the RS-232 serial outputs on your computer. The specific details of this
step will vary with your computer and its serial connectors. See the
RS-232
CONTROL
section below for connection details.
6. Set the EDID DIP switches for the maximum video resolution and audio capabilities
of the least capable connected display. See the
EDID DIP SWITCHES
section below
for details.
7. Plug the DC barrel connector on the included AC power adapter into the DC 12V
jack on the matrix, then plug the adapter into a nearby AC power outlet. The Power
LED will illuminate, indicating that the matrix is in standby mode.
8. Press the POWER button to turn the matrix on. The Power LED will extinguish,
indicating that power is applied.
9. Plug in and power on all connected equipment. Start video playback on all video
sources. Verify that video can be seen on each display.
10. Press each OUT button on the front panel four times to verify that the video on the
indicated display switches to the indicated video source.
Congratulations, you have successfully installed this Blackbird™ HDMI® matrix.
EDID DIP SWITCHES
The Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) is the means by which the video source
devices know the maximum video and audio capabilities of the connected display. Since
this matrix can connect four displays, each of which may have different capabilities, the
EDID DIP switches are used to set the maximum video and audio settings to that of the
least capable display.

For example, if you have 4K, 1080p, and 720p displays connected, the maximum common
video resolution is 720p, so you need to set the EDID DIP switches to set the maximum
video resolution to 720p.
The following table shows the various DIP switch settings for each of the different video
and audio combinations.

RS-232 CONTROL
This matrix can be controlled from a computer using an RS-232 serial data connection.
When you make the physical serial connection, you will be able to see the matrix on your
PC as a USB device. If it is not already powered on, press the POWER button on the front
panel to power on the matrix.
Next, use your file browser to copy the 4x4 HDMI Matrix Controller.exe software program
from the matrix to your PC, then double-click the program to run the RS-232 control
program. The following sections detail each page in the program.
General Page
The General Page allows you to set the basic communications settings to connect with the
matrix.
1. Port: Use the drop-down list to select the RS-232 COM port that is connected to the
matrix.
2. Connect: Click the Connect button to connect the PC with the matrix.
3. Factory Reset: Click the Factory Reset button to reset the matrix to the factory
default settings.

4. Reboot: Click the Reboot button to restart the matrix.
5. Enable Beep: Click the Enable Beep checkbox to enable or disable audio feedback
from the matrix.
6. Power On: Click the Power On checkbox to turn the matrix on or off.
7. Status: Click the Status button to refresh the matrix status.
8. Clear: Click the Clear button to clear all device information.
9. Device Information: Information about the device is displayed in this section.
EDID Page
Rather than using the general physical EDID settings, you can individually set the EDID for
each input. This can be done in three ways: manually selecting the EDID mode, copying the
EDID data from a particular display, or reading all EDID information from a file. Note that to
use this program, the EDID DIP switches must be set to 1111.
1. Set EDID Mode: Use the first drop-down list to select the EDID capabilities, then use
the second drop-down list the select the video source device, and finally click the
Set button to assign the EDID capabilities.

2. Copy EDID From: Use the first drop-down list to select the display from which the
EDID data will be copied, then use the second drop-down list to select the video
source device, and finally click the Set button to copy the EDID capabilities.
3. Open EDID: Click the ... button to open the file browser to select a file with EDID
information, then use the drop-down list to select the video source device, and
finally click the Set button to load the EDID capabilities.
4. Status: Click the Status button to refresh the displayed EDID capabilities for each
video source device.
Matrix Page
The Matrix Page allows you to directly assign specific inputs to each of the specific
OUTPUTs.
1. OUTPUT X: Each of the four OUTPUT sections displays the numbered video input (1-
4) for each lettered (A-D) video output.
2. INX: Click one of the IN buttons to set the video source device for the specific
OUTPUT.

3. Arrows: Click the back or forward buttons to cycle the selected video source device
for the specific OUTPUT.
Upgrade Page
The Upgrade Page allows you to upgrade the matrix's firmware.
1. Open: Click the Open button to open the file browser to select the firmware file.
Firmware files have a .FW file extension.
2. Path: Displays the path of the selected firmware file.
3. Progress: The progress bar displays the progress of the firmware update.
4. Upgrade: Click the Upgrade button to upload the firmware file to the matrix.
5. Messages: The Messages section displays any messages about the firmware
upgrade.
