DearNixiefriend,
Thankyouforpurchasingthisstate-of-the-artNixiethermometerDIYkit.Youhavepurchasedaproduct
thatcaptivatesas aDIYversionacomponentqualityand choiceofmaterialsthatisoutstandingin the
marketandwillcertainly drawtheattentionoftheiracquaintances inthefuture.
However, this also means that you should not "cobble together" this kit in record time. Take a quiet
eveningandaboutonehourtime to build.
Also, you should already have the necessary equipment and knowledge to be able to build such a
high-quality DIY kit without complications. The resulting success will definitely reward you for your
effortandstamina.
Theinstructionsassumeelectronicfundamentals,i.e.youalreadyknowthatICs,LEDsandtransistors
arepoledcomponentsandmaynotbesolderedinreversepolarity.Thesepartsarealsoverysensitive
forelectrostaticdischarge.Furthermore,theusageofa temperature-controlledsolderingstationwith
max.1mmwidetipandcorrespondinglyfineelectronicsolderaswellasappropriatetools(multimeter,
TX10,PH1/2and minislotted screwdriver, sidecutter,tweezers,magnifying glass,etc.)areadvised.
Please follow the steps and tips and hints in this manual. These are all tried out and tested
and allow you a trouble-free setup.
Important Safety Instructions
Duringinstallation,commissioningandmeasurementsandrepairspecialcareisrequired!Assembling
ofthecircuitis at yourownrisk.Thefunctionalitycan notbeguaranteed,northesuitability forcertain
purposes.Theuser himself has to check this andisresponsibleforthissuitability.
Noliabilitycanbe accepted fordamagesarisingduringor asaresultoftheassembly oroperation,in
particularfordamagesresultingfromalackofelectronicskills.
Thethermometermayonlybeoperatedinatouch-proofhousingindryindoorenviroment.Operation
withoutorwithdefectivetubesisnotpermitted!

whensellingthedeviceandalsogivehisnameandaddress.
Deviceswhichareassembledfromkitsthemselvesaretobeconsideredasanindustrialproductin
termsofsafety.

Assembling and functional test
Let’sstartwiththeUSBjackBU1.Solderonlytwoofthe housing tabs from component side for
fixingthepartat themoment.
SolderingthefollowingSMDcomponents,itmakessense,first solder only one pin
andbyre-heatingagain, finallyalignthecomponent.
Next fit and solder C11 (47µ) and C2 (82µ).
NowequipLED1.Notethatthethelongerwireistheanode"A"connection.
NextsolderthefivepinsoftheUSBjackandtheLEDfromsoldersideandcutoffthewires.
Nowequipandsolderinthefollowingorder:
C10 (47µ), T4 (Caution, ESD sensitive MosFet), L1 and C3 (82µ).
Nowfitandsolderpushbuttonswitch S1 - please payattentionforastraightfit,nextfitthe two trim-
potentiometersTR1andTR2(payattentionforthecorrectvalue:102= 1k / 473 = 47k) and the8-
pin.ICsocket.
ThenplugthePIC12F629intoit’s IC socket. Payattentionforcorrectorientationofthenotch.
Takeoneofthetwoattached rubber tubesandshortenittoapprox.11 mm.Nowpushthistube
overthemiddlecomponentwireofIC3.
ThensolderIC3fromthecomponentside. Pay special attention forthecorrectorientation(seeleft
handpicture).
Finally,equipfrombottomsideT5andsolderthistransistorfromthecomponentside.
PluginnowtheUSBpowersupply.ThegreenLEDbelowtheUSBsocketmustlightup and the six
RGBLEDsmustalsostartwiththeir color sequence (startingwithredcolour).
NowmeasurethevoltagebetweenAand GND and adjust itto140V(+/-3V)
withTR2HV-ADJUST.
Thenmeasure-justfor control -thefollowingvoltageswithrespect to GND:
ULM ~ 0.3V (temperature dependent, 10mV per ° C)
UREF ~ 2.1V (in the wiper’s middle
position of TR1 TEMP-CAL)
UTEMP ~ 1.9V (6.2 x ULM)
Disconnectnowthepower supply
andcarefullyplacetheboardaside,
butpayattention,asthecapacitorsof
theHV booster remain charged for a
fewseconds.

If everything is ok. we will start assembling the IN-13 tube and the scale
Pickupthescaleandremovefirsttheprotectivefilmontheside facing away from the engraving a
littlebit.
Thengently removetheinnercut-out of thescale(thetube’soutline),as it wasusedonlyfor
transportationprotection.Nextpickupthetwo tube clips and removealsotheprotectivefilmsfrom
bothsides.Nowfixthescaleupsidedowninasmallvise.
Attention: Please secure the jaws with Gaffer tape or use another protection to avoid
scratching the scale.
Gentlypushthetwo clips intothescalewith
theircutoutfacingtotherear of the scale.
Nextinsertthetubein correct direction,the
anodegridisonfrontside;thefullymirrored
surfacewiththeimprintisontherearside.
ApplytwoM3x10screwstosecurethetwo
LEDcovers(donotforgettoremovethe
protectivefilm)andthe twomounting
bracketsonthescale.Pleasedonotfasten
thescrewstoohard.
Installthecovers inthatwaythattheoval
cutoutisfacingtothe tube’s buttom,the
smallrectangularcutoutto the latertobe
attachedPCB.
Beforefasteningthesecondscrew
compress the sides of the scale to be sure,
thatthetubeclambnextto the LEDcoverswill
properfitintothecutoutof the scale.
Alignthemountingheight ofthetubethatthe
yellow/redmarkonthe tube’s glas willmatch
the14°Clineofthescale.
Threadnowcarefullythe threewiresofthe
tubethroughthecutoutinthePCBwithout
crossingeachother,placethescaleonthe
PCB as shown and secure it with two M3 x 6
self-tappingscrews.
Cutthepinkrubbertube in two halvesand
slide itovertheouterwiresof the IN-13 tube
and all the way down through the cutout.
Nowsolderallthreewiresofthetubewithit’s
solderingpadsandcuttheprotrudingwires.

Burn-in procedure
Many-butnot all -IN-13tubesareinitially
unableofdisplayingthe full heightoftheglow
colunm.ThereforeonnecttheNixieTherm
boardtotheUSBsupplyandhaveaclose
looktotheIN-13 tube.
Tip: Ifyouonlyseeone small glowandnot
thesmall"pilotglow"lefthand from themain
columnandalsonottheanode grid, thetube
isinstalledthewrong wayroundandyou
haveto"turn"the tubeafterremovingthe
scale.
Nowfit a short piece of wire (for example
fromtheLEDsorthetube) into theburn-in
padsXandY.Theglowcolumnofthe tube
willnowbecomebrighterand will slowly
moveup.
Theburn-inprocedureis finishedwhenthe
glowcolumnreachesthetop ofthetube.This
maytakeseveralminutes.Donotbe
impatient.Note:Thetubeand thetransistor
T3onthebottomwillbecomewarm during
thisprocedure.
Installation into the enclosure
Removetheburn-inwire and thepower
supplyfromtheNixieTherm. Peelupthe
protectivefilmfromthebottompanel and the
rearpanelfrombothsideseach.
AttachthefourM3x12plasticspacerstothebottompanelwithfourM3x8panheadscrews.
Thenfitthefourplasticself-adhesitivefeets to the edges ofthebottom.
SticktheM2.5x6 screw through the drill holes of the printed circuit board atitedges and slide a
self-retaining2.7mmspaceroverthescrewthread from the solder side. Insertthecircuitboard
togetherwiththerearpanel and tighten thecircuitboard.
Finally,removethe protectivefilmsfromthe
threesidepanels,thetoppanelofthecase
andthescale,insertthesidepanels and then
attachcarefullythe topcover.Thesidepanels
needsometimesaslightadjustmenttofitinto
thetopcover’soutouts.After tighteningthe
topcoverwiththeremainingfourM3x 8 pan
headscrews,yourNixieTherm isnearlyready
foruse.
Re-plugthepowersupply totheNixieTherm
andletitoperationalfor aboutanhour.Inthe
meantime,placeanaccuratethermometer
nexttotheNixieTherm.Afteronehouradjust
thedisplayedtemperaturerangeof the
NixieThermwiththetrimmer behind thescale
tothevalueof thereferencethermometer.
