applicationswhereyouaresendingdigitalimages,webpagesandphotographs.
TheMultiModemiCellmodemisdesignedaroundawidevarietyofinterfaceoptionsincludingserialRS‐232,USB,and
GeneralPurposeInput/Output(GPIO).TheserialRS‐232andUSBconnectionsprovideseamlessconnectivityfor
configurationofyourapplication.TheGPIOinterfaceprovidesfiveuser‐configurableGPIO’sasCMOSinputoroutput
portstobeconnectedtoacustomer’speripheraldevice.AcustomerapplicationinwhichtheGPIOinterfacecouldbe
usedisonewithamonitoringdeviceconnectedtotheGPIOinterfaceinwhichthemonitoringdevicetriggersaneventin
theIPstacktoestablishaTCPorUDPsocketconnectionorsendanemailstatingthatthemonitoringdevicewas

interference(EMI).TheFDAhelpeddevelopadetailedtestmethodtomeasureEMIofimplantedcardiacpacemakers
anddefibrillatorsfromcellulardevices.ThistestmethodispartoftheAssociationfortheAdvancementofMedical
Instrumentation(AAMI)standard.Thisstandardallowsmanufacturerstoensurethatcardiacpacemakersand
defibrillatorsaresafefromcellulardeviceEMI.
TheFDAcontinuestomonitorcellulardevicesforinteractionswithothermedicaldevices.Ifharmfulinterference
occurs,theFDAwillassesstheinterferenceandworktoresolvetheproblem.
Precautionsforpacemakerwearers
IfEMIoccurs,itcouldaffectapacemakerinoneofthreeways:
●Stopthepacemakerfromdeliveringthestimulatingpulsesthatregulatetheheart'srhythm.

However,peoplewithpacemakersmaywanttotakesimpleprecautionstobesurethattheirdevicedoesn'tcausea
problem.
●Keepthedeviceontheoppositethesideofthebodyfromthepacemakertoaddextradistancebetweenthe
pacemakerandthedevice.
●Avoidplacingaturned‐ondevicenexttothepacemaker(forexample,don’tcarrythedeviceinashirtorjacket

●Respectnationalregulationsontheuseofcellulartelephonesinvehicles.Roadsafetyalwayscomesfirst.
