PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
DUET SWITCH has been specifically designed to allow ANY existing Fax or
Fax/Modem device to receive Fax calls automatically when using a Telecom
Distinctive Ring service.
DUET SWITCH is TRANSPARENT in operation, which means that it will not affect
the normal use of your telephone line in any way and will work with all other
telephone devices that may be fitted to your line.
Barge-In protection is provided to prevent a Telephone connected to the Duet
Switch interrupting whenever a Fax Transmission is taking place and also will
prevent a Fax device accessing the line while a Telephone connected to Duet
Switch is in operation.
Duet Switch has also been designed for quick and easy USER INSTALLATION on
to ANY TELEPHONE SOCKET, which will take you just a few minutes.
There are Two DUET SWITCH models in our range:
DUET SWITCH 1 – Normal Model
This device is ideal for sites that only use Telephones connected to ONE
Telephone socket, including a Cordless Phone Base station that may have many
handsets connected to it.This model Answers analyses all incoming calls and at the
end of the first ring, it will allow the incoming telephone or fax call to connect
through to the appropriate device so that a Fax Machine will answer a Fax call, or
your Telephone handsets will Ring if it is a normal Telephone call. Because you
only use Telephones on one telephone socket, none of your telephones will ring
whenever there is an incoming Fax call.
DUET SWITCH 2 – Premium Model
This device is designed for sites that use Telephones connected to more than ONE
Telephone socket. This model also analyses all incoming calls and at the end of
the first ring will know if the call is a Fax Call or a Normal Telephone call. If the
incoming call is a Fax, this model Answers the incoming Fax Call and will then
generates a Ring Output to the Fax Machine to cause it to answer. The benefit of
this Model is that Telephones connected to different sockets will Ring just Once
and then Stop, whenever there is an incoming Fax Call.

OPERATING PROCEDURE
DUET SWITCH 1
The operation of your EXISTING TELEPHONE NUMBER will remain unchanged.
When your NEW FAX NUMBER is called, your telephone exchange will send a
NEW RING PATTERN down your line, which is different to your normal ring
pattern.
This new DISTINCTIVE RING pattern will be detected by DUET 1 at the
completion of the first ring.
DUET 1 will then connect the incoming Fax call to your Fax Machine or
Fax/Modem (FAX Device), so that it can answer the incoming Fax call.
Your unit has been programmed so that the first incoming ring for all
incoming calls does not pass through and ring the telephone(s) connected to the
NORMAL NUMBER PORT of DUET 1.
By doing so, any or all telephones connected to the NORMAL NUMBER PORT of
your device will not ring whenever a Fax Transmission is being received.
Your extension telephones (telephones in other rooms) which are not connected
to DUET 1 will ring several times until your Fax Machine answers the call.
You must not answer this different ring on a Telephone, as this will prevent the
Fax call from being received.
If you wish to receive Fax transmissions without your ‘extension telephones’
ringing, then you should use our DUET SWITCH 2 device, With this model, your
extension telephones will ring once only and stop.
If you do not want your extension telephones to ring UNTIL THE FAX ANSWERS,
an approved telephone cabling technician can wire all of your telephones so that
they all connect direct to the NORMAL NUMBER PORT of your DUET 1 device.
This procedure will need to be carried out by an approved telephone cabling
technician.

OPERATING PROCEDURE
DUET SWITCH 2
The operation of your EXISTING TELEPHONE NUMBER will remain unchanged.
When your NEW FAX NUMBER is called, your telephone exchange will send a
NEW RING PATTERN down your line, which is different to your normal ring
pattern.
This new DISTINCTIVE RING pattern will be detected by DUET 2 at the
completion of the first ring.
DUET 2 will then answer the incoming call, generate a conventional ring output to
cause your Fax Machine or Fax/Modem (FAX Device) to answer, so that it
will receive the incoming call.
Your unit has been programmed so that the first incoming ring for all
incoming calls does not pass through and ring the telephone(s) connected to the
NORMAL NUMBER PORT of DUET 2.
By doing so, any or all telephones connected to the NORMAL NUMBER PORT of
your device will not ring whenever a Fax Transmission is being received.
Your extension telephones (telephones in other rooms) which are not connected
to DUET 2 will ring once only, before the incoming FAX Call is connected.
If you wish to receive Fax transmissions without your ‘extension telephones’
ringing, they can be wired so that they all connect direct to the NORMAL
NUMBER PORT of your device.
If you do not want your extension telephones to ring ONCE, an approved
telephone cabling technician can wire all of your telephones so that they all
connect direct to the NORMAL NUMBER PORT of your DUET 2 device. This
procedure will need to be carried out by an approved telephone cabling
technician.

ANSWERING MACHINE
If a separate Answering Machine is to be used on your telephone line, it can be
fitted direct to the NORMAL NUMBER Port of DUET SWITCH, or it can be fitted on
another extension telephone socket.
If it is to be fitted to an extension telephone socket, the ANSWERING MACHINE
must be set to answer on 2 or more rings at all times.
DIP SWITCH SETTINGS
Four Micro Dip Switches are located on the underside of DUET SWITCH. Only
Switches 1,2 & 4 are used with DUET 1. All Four switches are used with DUET 2.
The position of each switch is important as they individually vary the
operation of this unit. Please ensure that you understand the significance of each
switch, as described elsewhere in this User Guide, before altering their position.
If SW1 is set to ON - The NORMAL NUMBER port receives calls immediately.
If SW1 is set to OFF - The NORMAL NUMBER port will not RING whenever a Fax
is received (Default)
If SW2 is set to ON - Your Fax Machine requires momentary connection to your
Telephone Line to Initiate Outgoing calls.
If SW2 is set to OFF - Your Fax Machine is operating Normally (Default)
If SW3 is set to ON - Your Fax Machine requires connection to your
Telephone Line to Answer Incoming calls.
If SW3 is set to OFF- Your Fax Machine is operating Normally (Default)
If SW4 is set to ON - CallerID (CLI) is used on the same line.
If SW4 is set to OFF - CallerID (CLI) is NOT used on the same line (Default)

CALLING LINE IDENTIFICATION
Calling Line Identification (CLI), also known as CallerID, is an optional Telephone
service where a callers telephone number is sent from the telephone exchange to a
special CLI/ CallerID reading device on your telephone line.
The callers phone number (unless the caller elects not to send this information) is
sent as a modem type transmission of information before the first full telephone ring
of incoming telephone calls.
DUET SWITCH in its default configuration does NOT PASS this first full ring, as it
analyses this ring as part of its Fax detection process.
This means that if your CLI/CND reading device is connected to DUET SWITCH,
CLI/CND information will NOT pass through to your CLI/CND reading device.
If your CLI/CND reading device is NOT connected to DUET SWITCH, it will receive
the CLI data.
If you plan to use the Calling Line Identification (CLI) service, then you should
connect your and a CLI/ CND reading device is to be connected to DUET
SWITCH, then you should set Dip Switch 4 to the ON position.
If SW4 is set to ON - CallerID (CLI) is used on the same line.
If SW4 is set to OFF - CallerID (CLI) is NOT used on the same line (Default)

TROUBLE SHOOTING
TELEPHONE WILL NOTDIAL
DUET SWITCH in its default configuration is programmed to remove any
TELEPHONES connected direct to the NORMAL PORT from the telephone line
and only connect your TELEPHONES to the telephone line when you pick up the
receiver to initiate or answer a call.
By doing so, DUET SWITCH will stop these telephones from ringing whenever you
have an incoming Fax call.
A small number of Telephones have recently introduced a new ‘Line In Use’
facility which is designed to prevent Barge-In by your Phone when a telephone
call is taking place. This would normally prevent your Phone from Dialing Out
when connected to a telephone line switch, such as DUET SWITCH.
Should your Telephone NOT DIAL out when connected to DUET SWITCH, then
you should set Dip Switch 1 to the ON position. When Dip Switch 1 is set to
the ON position, DUET SWITCH will leave your Telephones connected to
your telephone line when your line is not in use. It will only remove them from
the telephone line whenever your Fax Machine is in use.
The only difference you will experience with this switch change is that the
telephones connected direct to the PHONE DEVICE PORT will ring ONCE before
stopping, when Fax calls are received.
If SW1 is set to ON - The Normal Number port receives calls immediately. Your
Telephones connected to DUET SWITCH will Ring briefly and
then stop whenever there is a Fax Call
If SW1 is set to OFF - The Normal Number port does not RING whenever there is
a Fax Call (Default)

Page 10 Natcomm
TROUBLE SHOOTING
FAX DEVICE WILL NOT DIAL
DUET SWITCH in its default configuration is programmed to remove your FAX
DEVICE from the telephone line and only connect your Fax Device to the
telephone line when you are sending or receiving a Fax Transmission.
By doing so, DUET SWITCH can ENSURE that your FAX DEVICE will NEVER
INTERFERE with an incoming or outgoing telephone call.
A small number of Fax Devices have recently introduced a new ‘Line In Use’
facility which is designed to prevent Barge-In by your Fax when a telephone call is
taking place. This would normally prevent your Fax Machine from Dialing Out from
a telephone line switch, such as DUET SWITCH.
Should your Fax Device NOT DIAL out when connected to DUET SWITCH, then
you should set Dip Switch 2 to the ON position. When Dip Switch 2 is set to the
ON position, DUET SWITCH will leave your Fax Device connected to your
telephone line when your line is not in use. It will then remove it from the telephone
line whenever you pick up a telephone to make an outgoing call or whenever you
receive an incoming call.
If you require Dip Switch 2 to be set to the ON position, you MUST set to your FAX
DEVICE to answer on TWO or MORE RINGS. This will ensure that your Fax
Device does not interfere with incoming telephone calls. Providing you do so, this
setting will not interfere with your Line Sharing requirements.
If SW2 is set to ON - Your Fax Machine requires momentary connection to your
Telephone Line to Initiate Outgoing calls.
If SW2 is set to OFF - Your Fax Machine is operating Normally (Default)

Natcomm Page 11
TROUBLE SHOOTING FAX WILL NOT ANSWER
Duet Switch 2 only
A very small number of Fax Devices may not ANSWER the Ring that is generated
by DUET 2.
Should this happen, you will notice that DUET 2 will ANSWER an Incoming Fax
call after 1 ring, but your Fax Device will not connect to the Fax call.
You can overcome this problem by setting Dip Switches 3 to the ON position.
With this special setting, DUET 2 after detecting an incoming Fax call will NOT
ANSWER, but it will instead will connect the INCOMING DISTINCTIVE RING to
your Fax Device so that it can answer the incoming Telephone Exchange Ring.
If SW3 is set to ON - Your Fax Machine is operating Normally.
If SW3 is set to OFF - Your Fax Machine requires connection to your Telephone
Line to Answer Calls.
OPERATION WITH ADSL
DUET SWITCH is compatible with the use of ADSL on the same telephone
line, PROVIDING you use an ADSL FILTER.
To avoid Fax Reception problems, you should fit an ADSL filter immediately ahead
of DUET SWITCH.
Failure to do so CAN cause Fax Reception problems.
If your Internet Connection is provided by Fiber or Cable or other means, you
should not use an ADSL Filter
