Introduction to the Hi-Lite
Studio Quality Lighting Specifically Designed for the Videoconferenc-
ing Environment
“Lights, camera, action!” There’s a reason why lights
come first in this famous expression. Professional
photographers, television engineers and motion picture
studios will all agree that lighting is just as important
as the rest of the production considerations. In other
words, the quality of the image is directly proportional to
the quality of the lighting. This rule is consistent with all
optical applications and is especially true with images
transmitted by videoconferencing codec units.
Compared to the human eye, the video camera is less
tolerant of unfavorable lighting conditions. It detects
and processes unwanted information such as flicker and
glare caused by conventional light sources. Videocon-
ferencing further compounds this problem by compress-
ing and decompressing the video signal before transmit-
ting it over many miles of telephone lines. The best way
to compensate for these inherent problems is to feed the
camera the proper amount of high quality light.
Don’t worry, there’s no need to become a lighting expert.
We can supply you with the tools and suggestions to
master the videoconferencing challenges that arise due
to poor lighting conditions.

Features & Benefits
Features
Adjustable Light Intensity (dimmable Hi-Lite models
only)
The optional dimming feature on the Hi-Lite units allows
the light intensity to be adjusted to provide more key light
for people with darker skin tones and less for those with
lighter complexions. Adjustable lighting also provides
essential fill light, which fills in dark areas and dead
spots left by conventional lighting. The result is a sharp,
crisp picture with a remarkable improvement in contrast
and definition.
Proper Color Temperature and Rendering
Hi-Lites are engineered to provide the highest quality of
diffused light for videoconferencing. Video cameras at-
tain peak performance between 2800°K to 4100°K. With
a color temperature of 3200°K and a Color Rendering
Index (CRI) of 82, our lamps set the standard for high
quality videoconference lighting.
No Interference
Unlike conventional fluorescent or incandescent lighting,
the Hi-Lite uses a high frequency ballast which provides
an even, low flicker output, as well as virtually silent
operation.
Low Power Consumption Generates Very Little Heat
The Hi-Lite uses three compact, fluorescent twin-tube
lamps per fixture. It needs less than 110 watts to
produce the same quality light as Tungsten or Halogen
lamps, which require as much as 500-1500 watts!
Less energy for operation means less heat dissipated.
Even after long hours of operation, the fixture is still cool
to the touch. Participants remain cool and comfortable
for the duration of the videoconference.

Safety Precautions
Safety Precautions for All Hi-Lite Models
To prevent damage to the equipment and operating per-
sonnel, please observe the following precautions:
Use the correct voltage source as specified by the label
on the back of the unit.
Make sure that the voltage source contains a satisfac-
tory path to ground.
Do not operate the unit where fluids can come into con-
tact with the electrical components.
When changing the lamp:
1. Disconnect the electrical supply.
2. Allow the unit to cool.
3. Use only part # 8-13698 or 8-13699 replacement
lamps, which you can purchase from your authorized
Hi-Lite dealer.
Other than changing the lamp, there are no user service-
able components. Opening the unit will expose danger-
ous voltage levels and sensitive electronic components.
A qualified technician should perform all repairs.
To prevent the unit from damaging condensation and
thermal shock, certain procedures must be followed:
1. In cold weather, always put the unit in a moisture
proof container or enclosure before transporting.
2. Either keep the unit warm during transportation, or
allow sufficient time for it to warm up at the destina-
tion. Keep the unit in the original moisture proof
package while it warms up to room temperature.
(The goal is to prevent warm, moist air from striking
the cold electronic components, which will cause dam-
aging condensation).

Once you have decided where to place the fixture(s),
you can easily install it by following these simple steps.
INSTALL THE CADDY CLAMP
1. Remove all adjacent ceiling tiles.
2. Locate structure to which the safety cable will be
fastened.
3. Choose the proper Caddy Clamp designed for your
ceiling grid. Use IDS-2 for 15/16” wide grid and IDS-9
and IDS-9.5 for 9/16” wide applications.
4. Insert the 2” carriage bolt through one-half of the
Caddy Clamp, then close each half around the ceiling

to close the two halves of the Caddy Clamp.)

15
Installation Instructions for XL, EX & NX Models
INSTALL THE SAFETY CABLE
In the unlikely event that either the Caddy Clamp or the
ceiling grid does not hold properly, the attached safety
cable will keep the unit suspended safely above con-
ference participants. Please be certain to wear safety
glasses and follow common sense safety precautions
when drilling holes for safety cable installation.
Secure the safety cable by one of the following methods:
1. Typical Concrete Installation
(Tools required: Step Ladder, Adjustable Wrench,
Drill, 1/4” Masonry Bit, Safety Glasses.)
a. Predrill one 1/4” hole (using a 1/4” masonry drill
bit) in the cement directly above the T-bar clamp
assembly, insert and hammer in the wedge an-
chor.
b. Loop the safety cable through the wedge anchor,
fold it back approximately 3.3” and fasten with
cable clips.
2. Typical Wood Installation
(Tools required: Step Ladder, Adjustable Wrench,
Drill, 3/16” Drill Bit, Safety Glasses.)
a. Predrill one 3/16” hole in the wood directly above
the T-bar, insert and screw in the flat end hanger-
lag (screw-type).
b. Loop safety cable through the flat end hanger-lag,
fold it back approximately 3.3” and fasten with cable
clips.

16

b. Loop the safety cable through the flat end hanger,
fold it back approximately 3.3” and fasten with
cable clips.
ATTACH SAFETY CABLE TO THE CADDY CLAMP
1. Loop the safety cable through the eye of the Caddy
Clamp and through one loop of the supplied 8” safety
cable. Then, fold it back approximately 3.3 inches.
2. Fasten the folded safety cable together with the two
cable clips supplied with the unit.

17
Installation Instructions for XL, EX & NX Models
ATTACH UNIT TO THE CEILING
(Tools required: Step Ladder, Allen Wrench (included))
1. Hand thread the 1/2” diameter spacer post on to the
1/4-20 x 2” carriage bolt all the way up to the bottom
of the Caddy Clamp.
2. Hang the light by allowing the 1/4-20 x 2” carriage
bolt to pass through the hole in the yoke. While hold-
ing the light in this position, place the 1/4” washer
over the bolt, followed by the 1/4-20 hex nut. Hand
tighten the 1/4-20 hex nut to the bottom of the yoke.
3. Attach the remaining end of the safety cable by loop-
ing it over one leg of the safety bracket.
4. Using the Allen wrench and two button head screws,
attach the safety bracket to the underside of the yoke
as shown below.
5. Place the 1/4” nylon washer, followed by the 1/4”
wave washer, over the 2” long bolt. Then thread the
adjustable locking T-handle up to the safety bracket.
6. Use this handle to loosen the unit for directional rota-
tion (pan). Use the side handles to tip the unit to a
suitable angle.

18
Operation for XL, EX & NX Models
Power On The Hi-Lite is a “plug & play” unit. Just plug the power
cord into a standard 120 volt grounded outlet and turn on
the power switch on the back of the unit. You can also
plug the unit into a switched outlet and control power
from a standard wall switch.
Warning Do not use a wall dimmer switch (rheostat) to dim
the Hi-Lites. This will damage the power supply.
Adjusting the Light Intensity (XL Model)
The Hi-Lite XL has a built-in IR dimmer for adjusting the
intensity of the light. Simply point the remote towards
the unit and adjust the brightness to your liking.

19
