Battery Charger with AC Adapter
The NEC Versa®4000 Series Battery Charger lets you recharge Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion)
batteries for your NEC Versa 4000 series notebook computer. It takes approximately 2
hours to fully charge a single battery pack using your battery charger.
The battery charger consists of two bays allowing you to charge one or two batteries
sequentially. To charge batteries, simply connect the AC adapter and power cable to
the battery charger and insert the battery packs as described in this sheet.
This sheet describes the following:
!"
how to connect the battery charger to AC power
!"
how to insert battery packs.
!"
how to read the light emitting diodes (LEDs) and fuel gauge.
PREPARING TO USE THE BATTERY CHARGER
To charge one or two battery packs sequentially, first connect the AC adapter, and then
insert the Li-Ion battery pack(s) described as follows.
Connecting the Battery Charger to AC Power
Follow these instructions to connect the AC adapter to the battery charger.
1. Plug the DC power cable into the port on the back of the battery charger.
2. Connect one end of the AC power cable to the AC adapter.
3. Plug the other end of the AC power cable into a properly grounded wall outlet.

4. See “Reading the LEDs” and “Reading the Fuel Gauge” later in this sheet to locate
the battery charger LEDs.
Once connected to the AC adapter, the battery charger LEDs run through a brief di-
agnostic test as follows:
!"
both status LEDs flash green, yellow, then red
!"
each fuel gauge LED lights green sequentially, then dims.
When the bay 1 status LED displays a continuous flashing yellow light, the diag-
nostic test is completed and the battery charger is ready for use. The bay 1 status
LED flashes yellow until a battery pack is inserted into bay 1 or bay 2.
Inserting A Battery Pack
Once the AC adapter is connected, insert a battery pack into your battery charger as
follows.
NOTE
The NEC Versa 4000 Series battery charger only charges the
Li-Ion battery specified.
1. Position the battery pack so that the battery terminals face down, and the battery
label faces left. See the following figure.
Inserting a Battery Pack

2. Align the battery pack with either bay 1 or bay 2.
!"
As soon as you insert the battery pack into a bay, the charger immediately begins
to fast charge the battery. The status LED on the front of the charger (for that
bay) flashes green, and the fuel gauge indicates the battery’s current capacity.
!"
If you insert a second battery pack into the charger, this status bay LED lights
solid yellow, indicating that the battery pack is waiting to be charged. Also, the
corresponding fuel gauge indicates the second battery’s current capacity.
NOTE
The NEC Versa 4000 Series battery charger does not charge an
extremely hot or cold battery.
For example, when a hot battery is inserted into a bay, the status LED
on that bay lights yellow, and does not begin charging until the battery
cools down.
READING THE LEDS
The two status LEDs on the front of the battery charger mean the following:
!"
Flashing Green — Battery pack is charging.
!"
Flashing Yellow — Battery charger is connected to AC power, powered on, and
ready for use. (This applies to the bay 1 status LED only).
!"
Yellow — Second battery pack is waiting for a charge.
!"
Green — Battery pack is fully charged.
!"
Flashing Red — Signals a problem with the battery pack or battery charger. See the
“Problem Checklist” that follows for a list of problem solving tips.

If the status LEDs display a blinking red light, you can solve the problem by checking
the following items:
!"
The battery pack is not connected properly. Remove the battery and reinsert it into
the connectors.
!"
The battery pack is defective. Insert another battery pack.
!"
Check to see that the battery contacts and battery charger contacts are clean. If the
battery contacts are dirty, wipe them clean with a dry cotton swab. If the battery
charger contacts are dirty, disconnect the charger from AC power and wipe the
charger contacts with a dry cotton swab.
!"
The battery charger took longer than 140 minutes to reach a full charge.
This may be due to a faulty battery, or battery charger. Remove the battery or
batteries. Reset the battery charger by removing and reattaching the AC adapter.
READING THE FUEL GAUGE
The fuel gauge lets you know how much battery power is present in each battery pack.
It consists of four green LEDs, located next to the battery charger bays.

and the status LED are solid green.
HELPFUL HINTS Refer to the following when using your battery charger.
!"
Use the battery charger in a cool, dust-free environment.
!"
To charge the batteries properly, make sure the batteries are seated securely in the
slots.
!"
Do not charge the battery pack in extreme temperatures.
Now you are ready to charge batteries for your NEC Versa 4000 Series computer!
