Newstripe Dirt Doctor Junior Quick reference guide

Dirt Doctor Junior (model # 10003679)
Assembly & Operating Instructions
ASSEMBLY:
NOTE: If the Finish Drag Kit was purchased with unit, the pull chains simply attach to ‘snap links’
that connect to the rear of the unit through the holes in the frame.
The Dirt Doctor with tow package is shipped with the front tongue assembly removed. You will need two, ¾” wrenches
and/or sockets for assembly.
NOTE: We recommend two people, or the use of automotive style jack stands to assemble the unit.
- Remove all shipping ties securing the unit to the pallet.
- Cut shipping ties securing tongue assembly, and tip the tongue assembly upright.
- Remove caster from carton and install it in the tongue jack and secure with the quick-release pin.
NOTE: The tongue jack is shipped in the ‘full up’ position with operating handle down. You will need to turn
the operating handle clockwise several turns before you can lift operating handle up and over to have the handle in the
normal operating position.
- Place the tongue assembly in front of the unit and align the six holes in the tongue assembly with the six
holes in the unit. Tighten securely with ½”x 2” long bolts, washers and Nylock nuts.
The unit may be left on the pallet to install the tongue assembly. After installing, you may then lower the rear wheels to
remove the unit from the pallet.
To lower the wheels for transport (raise rear roller off of ground):
- Step to one side of the unit, remove lynch pin and slide wheel arm pin out until it clears plate.
- Lift wheel arm up and back to lower wheel. Slide wheel arm pin into plate (top hole is the transport position), and
secure with lynch pin. Repeat procedure on other side.
CAUTION: The unit will move when raising and lowering the wheels if the unit is not attached to the
tow vehicle.
CAUTION: Wheel Lift Arms can move quickly with great force when raising the wheels (lowering the
unit) when the unit is attached to the tow vehicle.
Towing the Dirt Doctor Junior:
NOTE: Front caster is only used to roll unit around inside of shed or warehouse. Raise the jack tongue to attach
it to the tractor/utility vehicle hitch or, to raise the unit to adjust ripper blades or pulverizer bar height. It should always
be removed when transporting the unit and when using the unit.
Before Towing:
- Two Hitch Pins are used to secure the hitch draw bar to the tongue nose support for towing. (See Figures
1 & 2) One Hitch Pin is removed when you are operating the unit so it can pivot up and down.
- After connecting the unit to the hitch plate, raise the jack, pull the quick release pin and remove the caster.
- Lower the rear wheels per above instructions. You may now transport the unit to the field.

Dirt Doctor Junior 2
Cutting Depths for Height Adjustments:
The Dirt Doctor junior has been designed with four height positions for the pulverizer bar and three height positions for
the ripper bar to allow for different surfaces and soil conditions. Adjusting the pulverizer bar can also regulate the cutting
depth of the ripper bar.
Approximate Depths:
Pulverizer Bar in 1st (bottom holes) position with: Pulverizer Bar in 2nd position
- Ripper blades in lowest position 1/4”-1/2” deep - Ripper blades in lowest position 1” deep
- Ripper blades in middle position 0” deep - Ripper blades in middle position 0” deep
Pulverizer Bar in Middle 3rd position with: Pulverizer Bar in 4th (top holes) position with:
- Ripper blades in lowest position 1.75” deep - Ripper blades in lowest position 2.5” deep
- Ripper blades in middle position 3/4” deep - Ripper blades in middle position 1.5” deep
Ripper Blades in Highest (top holes) position: (This position is also recommended for transport)
- Non-cutting, unit rides on Pulverizer bar only. Depth will be .5”- 1”. This position is also excellent
for just ‘refreshing’ the surface when infields have a high level of infield mix.
Some experimentation will be needed to achieve the correct results for your particular soil and application.
Adjusting Ripper and Pulverizer Bars:
- Use the tongue jack to raise the front of the unit to adjust the Ripper blades and Pulverizer bar.
- The Ripper blades are adjusted by pulling the Hitch Pins on either side of the unit and moving ripper bar up or down.
The ‘Full Up’ position is used for transport or non-cutting.
- The pulverizer bar height is adjusted by pulling the ‘T’ handle pins with push buttons on either side of the unit and
using the height adjustment lever to move the pulverizer bar up or down. Choose the height position you want and
depress the center button on the ‘T’ handle pin and insert it in the proper hole.
CAUTION: Make sure the ‘T’ pin engages the hole in the pulverizer bar plate. If the ‘T’ pin is not in the hole, but is
in front of, or is in back of the plate, serious damage to the bar will occur when using the unit.
NOTE: After each adjustment, adjust the drag chain length so that the drag will contact surface, but will not in-
terfere with roller.
Also: The center drag section direction may be reversed. The expanded metal section has an angle or ‘slope’ that
makes each small opening act as a miniature cutting blade. The drag section will act less aggressively if you disconnect
the chains and turn the center section around so angle faces rearward.

Using the Dirt Doctor:
If you have used a tow vehicle to transport the unit, and not the tow vehicle you are going to use:
- Install caster in tongue jack. Lower tongue jack to relieve pressure from hitch and release from tow
vehicle.
NOTE: There are five height positions available on the tongue nose support to allow for different hitch heights
on different vehicles. Choose the height that will allow the unit to sit close to level.
- Connect hitch draw bar to tow vehicle using tongue caster to align hitch draw bar.
- Remove one of the Hitch Pins to allow draw bar to move up and down when operating.
- Raise the tongue jack and remove the caster with quick release pin.
To raise rear wheels (Lower the unit):
- Remove hitch pin from wheel lift arm pin and slide lift arm pin out until it clears the hole in the plate.
CAUTION: Keep a firm grip on the lifting arm! Keep head and shoulders away from the lifting arm!
The weight of the unit will cause the lifting arm to drop rapidly.
SLOWLY lower the wheel lifting arm until you can insert the lifting arm pin in the lowest hole. Reinstall the hitch pin.
Repeat with the other side.
NOTE: The other hole positions allow you to use the ripper, pulverizer bar and drag without the compacting roller, or
with the compacting roller only compacting lightly.
- Adjust drag height so it will drag the surface but, will not be loose enough to interfere with the roller.
- Position scraper bar against roller.
- Optional Finish Drag may be attached now or when ready to make a finish pass.
- Additional weight may be added to weight tray for deeper cutting in hard soil.
After using:
- Reinstall the second Hitch Pin in the draw bar. (You may have to reinstall the caster to align the holes.)
- Lower rear wheels as described previously.
- Raise harrow teeth to upper most position and Lift drag section if needed to clear pavement.
- Remove caster and raise tongue jack. You may now safely tow the unit. Do Not exceed 15 mph.
Maintenance:
The only maintenance required beyond periodic cleaning is to WEEKLY grease the four pillow blocks (bearings) on the
ends of the pulverizer bar and the roller.
MONTHLY use a light grease to coat the lifting arm pins.
We do not recommend the use of lubricants on the scraper blade or tongue jack as this will only cause dirt to collect in
these areas.
Ripper blades may be reversed when tips become worn.
