TheFisheye-Nikkor8mmf/2.8lensseesandrecordseveryobjectina full
180°hemisphere—everythinginfront,above,belowandtoeithersideofthe
lens. Unlikeotherfisheyelenses,itfitsthecamerawithoutanyneedtolock
upthereflexmirrorandtakesfulladvantageofthereflexviewingfeatureof
allNikoncameras.Thefocusingrangeextendsdowntoonefoottopermit
pinpointfocusingonforegroundobjectswhilethrowingthebackgroundout
offocusatlargeapertures,andtheaperturediaphragmcoupleswiththe
TTLexposuremetersforfull-apertureexposuremeasurement.Thewide
maximumapertureoff/2.8meansthattheviewfinderimageisextra-bright
foreasyviewingandfocusingevenindimlight.A setoffivefiltersisbuilt
intothelensbarrel.
FISHEYELENS
Likemostfisheyelenses,theFisheye-Nikkor8mmf/2.8coversa 180°hemi-
sphereandproducesa circularimageon film. Barreldistortionisconsider-
able, sincethecircumferenceoftheimagecirclecorrespondstoa straight
line.
Theequidistantprojectionformula(y=C0)isusedinordertoaccommodate
thisextra-widepictureanglewithina fieldoffinite size. Thezenithangle(6)
ofanypointintheimagerecordedonfilmisproportionaltothedistance
(y)fromthecenteroftheimage(seePhotogrammetry,Page12).
Originallydesignedforscientificapplicationssuchasmeasuringthezenith
orazimuthofastronomicalbodies,recordingclouddistributionpatternsin
theentireskyorsurveyingbyphotogrammetry,thelensisalsosuitedfor
manyotherunique requirements.Itisusedwidelyforcreatingspecialef-
fects, photographingtheinsidesofinaccessiblespaces,recordingcrowd
movementsinlargeareas,etc.
