35-105mmf/3.5-4.5isa versatile,easy-to-operate.highper-
formancezoomlens,offeringa varietyoffocallengths
fromwide-angle,normaltotelephotooverits3Xzoom
range.Forconvenience,itfeaturesquick,t>ne-ringfocusing
andzooming:simplyturntheringtofocusandpushorpull
ittozoom.Normalfocusingextendsfrominfinitydownto
1.4m(5ft)withprovisionforclosefocusingatallfocal
lengthsbyoperatingthespecialmacroring.Atthe35mm
setting,closefocusingrangesfrom1.4m(5ft)downto
0.27in(0.9ft).Filtersizeisthestandard52mmNikonsize-
exceptionallysmallfora zoomlenswiththiswidea range
offocallengths.
ConstructedofthehighestqualityNikonglass,thiszoom
lensproducessharpimageswithhighcontrastfromthe
shortesttothelongestfocallengthwithallaberrationswell
corrected.Inaddition,NikonIntegratedCoating(NIC)is
appliedtoallair-to-glasssurfacesofthelenselementsto
minimizeghostimagesandflareandproducephotographs
withnaturalcolorrendition.
Thelensoffers"automatic maximumapertureindexing"(AI)with
suitablyequippedcameras,viathemetercouplingridgeprovided
(exceptF-401/N4004").Themetercouplingridgeandautomatic
diaphragmfunctiontogethertopermitfullapertureexposuremeas-
urement.Fornon-AItypeNikoncameras,this lensisalsofitted
witha metercouplingshoetopermitthesameoperation.

MOUNTINGTHELENSA
Positionthelensinthecamera'sbayonetmount,aligningthegreen
apertureindexonthelenswiththelensmountingindexonthe
camera.Then,twistthelenscounterclockwiseuntilitclicksinto
place.Toremove,depressthelensreleasebuttononthecameraand
twistthelensclockwise.
Notes:
1) When mounting the lens on an A1-type camera with a lift-up
meter coupling lever, make sure the lever is in the "down "po-
sition; when mounting on a camera without this lever (non-AI
type), "manual" maximum aperture indexing is required. For
more information, refer to the camera's instruction manual.
2) When the lens isused with the Nikon F-401 /N4004, the camera
meter coupling function does not operate and the exposure in-
dicator LEDs do not appear.
ZOOMING-B
Tozoominandout,lookthroughtheviewfindeiandslide
thefocusing/zoomingringbackandforthuntilthedesired
compositionisframedonthefocusingscreen.Astheringis
pushedforwardforlongerfocallengths,a four-position
scale(35mm,50mm,70mm,and105mm)isuncoveredon
thelensbarreltoshowwhichfocallengththelensissetfor.
Ofcourse,youcanuseintermediatesettings.Topresetthe
lensfora specificfocallength,aligntheedgeofthefocusing
ringwiththetopedgeofthedigitsofthedesiredfocal
length.

FOCUSINGC
Turnthefocusing/zoomingringuntiltheimageonthe
focusingscreenappearssharpandcrisp.
Forpinpointfocusing,focuswiththelensatthelongest
focallength,thenzoomintoa shorterfocallengthforthe
desiredpicturecomposition.Oncefocused,thereisnoneed
torefocuswitheachchangeinfocallength.Youcanalso
prefocusthelensbyturningtheringuntilthedistancescale
indexlinesupwiththenumberwhichcorrespondswith
yourestimatedormeasuredcamera-to-subjectdistance.
MACROFOCUSINGD E
Althoughnormalfocusingispossiblefrominfinityto1.4m
(5ft), youcanfocusevencloseratanyfocallengthsetting,
byoperatingthespecialmacroring.Togetintothemacro
mode,justpushthemacrobuttonwhileturningthemacro
ringtotheleft(inthedirectionoftheengravedorange
arrow). Thiscanbedoneatanyzoomsettingandany
focuseddistance.Onceinthemacromode,focusingisdone
bymovingthefocusing/zoomingringinandout.Topreset
thereproductionratio,firstturnthefocusing/zoomingring
totheclosestfocusingdistanceof1.4m,thenturnthe
macroringallthewaytotheleftuntiltheorangeM is
oppositethegreenapertureindex;nowbyzoomingthelens
inorout,theorangetriangleindicatesthereproduction
ratiosetting.Atthe35mm setting,continuousclosefocusing
ispossiblefrom1.4m(5ft)downto0.27m(0.9ft),providing
amaximumreproductionratioof1:4.
Inthemacromode,finefocusingcanalsobeaccomplished
byturningthemacroringbackandforth.Toreturnthe
lenstothenormalfocusingmode,turnthemacroringin
theoppositedirectionofthearrowallthewaytotheright
unitlyouheara click.

Note 1: In the macro mode, the engraved focal lengths on
the lens barrel no longer indicate the actual focal length set-
ting, because the focusing Izooming ring is mechanically
moved forward.
Note 2: Although this lens has macro focusing capability,
the use of a Micro-Nikkor lens is recommended for docu-
ment copying or slide duplication where critical sharpness is
required.

Variousinterchangeablefocusingscreensareavailablefor
NikonF3-andF2-seriescamerastosuitanytypeoflensor
picture-takingsituation.Thosewhicharerecommendedfor
usewiththisZoom-Nikkor35-105mmf/3.5-4.5lensare
listedbelow.ForscreensusedforNikoncamerasother
thanF3-andF2-seriescameras(e.g.,NikonFA,FE2,FM2
andFE),refertothecolumnforF3-seriescameras.Forthe
