Read these simple guidelines. Not following them may be dangerous or illegal.

SWITCH ON SAFELY
Do not switch the device on when wireless phone use is prohibited or
when it may cause interference or danger.
ROAD SAFETY COMES FIRST
Obey all local laws. Always keep your hands free to operate the vehicle
while driving. Your first consideration while driving should be road
safety.
INTERFERENCE
All wireless devices may be susceptible to interference, which could
affect performance.
SWITCH OFF IN RESTRICTED AREAS
Follow any restrictions. Switch the device off in aircraft, near medical
equipment, fuel, chemicals, or blasting areas.
QUALIFIED SERVICE
Only qualified personnel may install or repair this product.
ACCESSORIES AND BATTERIES
Use only approved accessories and batteries. Do not connect
incompatible products.
WATER-RESISTANCE
Your device is not water-resistant. Keep it dry.

■About your device
The wireless device (RM-686) described in this guide is approved for use on the
CDMA 800 MHz network. Contact your service provider for more information
about networks.
When using the features in this device, obey all laws and respect local customs,
privacy and legitimate rights of others, including copyrights.
Copyright protection may prevent some images, music, and other content from
being copied, modified or transferred.
Your device may have preinstalled bookmarks and links for third-party internet
sites. You may also access other third-party sites through your device. Third-party
sites are not affiliated with Nokia, and Nokia does not endorse or assume liability
for them. If you choose to access such sites, you should take precautions for
security or content.
Warning: To use any features in this device, other than the alarm clock,
the device must be switched on. Do not switch the device on when

■Network services
To use the device you must have service from a wireless service provider. Many of
the features require special network features. These features are not available on
all networks; other networks may require that you make specific arrangements
with your service provider before you can use the network services. Using network
services involves transmission of data. Check with your service provider for details

about fees in your home network and when roaming in other networks. Your
service provider can give you instructions and explain what charges will apply.
Some networks may have limitations that affect how you can use network services.
For instance, some networks may not support all language-dependent characters
and services.
Your service provider may have requested that certain features be disabled or not
activated in your device. If so, these features will not appear on your device menu.
Your device may also have a special configuration such as changes in menu names,
menu order, and icons. Contact your service provider for more information.
This device supports WAP 2.0 protocols (HTTP and SSL) that run on TCP/IP
protocols. Some features of this device, such as sending e-mail, browsing websites,
or downloading files require network support for these technologies.

Do not cover the area above the touch screen, for
example, with protective film or tape.
■Insert the UIM card and battery
Always switch the device off and disconnect the charger before removing
the battery.
1. With the back of the device facing you,
lift up the back cover with your nail from
the right side of your device.
2. Insert your finger into the finger grip, and
lift the battery from its compartment.
3. Make sure that the contact area is facing
down, and insert the UIM card into the
card slot.
4. Align the battery contacts with those on
the device, and press down on the other
end of the battery.

5. Insert the tabs at the top of the cover into
the slots in the device, and press down on
the other end of the back cover.
■Insert the memory card
Use only compatible microSD cards approved by Nokia for use with this
device. Your device supports microSD cards that have a capacity of up to
16 GB. Nokia uses approved industry standards for memory cards, but
some brands may not be fully compatible with this device. Incompatible
cards may damage the card and the device and corrupt data stored on the
card.
1. Remove the back cover.
2. Make sure that the contact area is facing
down, and insert the microSD card into the
card slot.
3. Replace the back cover.
Important: Do not remove the memory card in the middle of an
operation when the card is being accessed. Removing the card in
the middle of an operation may damage the memory card as well
as the device, and data stored on the card may be corrupted.
■Charge the battery
Your battery has been partially charged at the factory. If the device
indicates a low charge, do the following:

1. Connect the charger to a wall outlet.
2. Connect the charger to the device.
3. When the device indicates a full charge,
disconnect the charger from the device, then from the wall outlet.
You do not need to charge the battery for a specific length of time, and
you can use the device while it is charging. If the battery is completely
discharged, it may take several minutes before the charging indicator
appears on the display or before any calls can be made. You can also use
USB data cable for charging.
Warning: Use only batteries, chargers, and accessories approved
by Nokia for use with this particular model. The use of any other
types may invalidate any approval or warranty, and may be
dangerous.
■Switch your device on or off
Press and hold the power key.
■Set the time zone, date and time
When you switch on your device for the first time, you are asked to set the
time and date. Fill in the fields, and select Save.
To access date and time settings later, see "Date and time", p. 37.

■Stylus
Some functions, such as handwriting recognition, are
designed to be used with a stylus. The pen stylus is located
at the left side of the device.
Important: Use only a stylus approved by Nokia for use
with this device. Using any other stylus may invalidate any warranty
applying to the device and may damage the touch screen. Avoid
scratching the touch screen. Never use an actual pen or pencil or other
sharp objects to write on the touch screen.
■Access codes
The access code helps to protect your phone against unauthorized use.
The default lock code is 1234. You can change the code, and set the device
to request the code. Keep the new code secret and in a safe place separate
from your device. If you forget the code and your device is locked, your
device will require services. Additional charges may apply, and all the
personal data in your device may be deleted. For more information,
contact a Nokia Care point or your device dealer.
To define the security settings for your device, select Menu > Settings >
Security.

■Lock the keys and touch screen
The keyguard locks the keys and the touch screen to prevent accidental
presses.
To lock or unlock the keys and the touch screen, slide the lock switch on
the side of the device.
To lock the keys and the touch screen automatically when no keys are
pressed for a certain length of time, in the home screen, select Menu >
Settings > Phone > Automatic keyguard > On, and enter the desired
delay time.
■Touch screen actions
Use the touch screen with your finger or with a stylus (if available).
Tap and double-tap
To open an application or other element on the touch screen, you
normally tap it with your finger or the stylus. To zoom a web page while
surfing on the internet, you must tap it twice.
Select
In this user documentation, opening applications or items by tapping
them once is called "selecting". If you need to select several items in a
sequence, the display texts to select are separated by arrows. For example,
to select Menu > Settings, tap Menu, and then tap Settings.

Drag
To drag, place your finger or the stylus on the screen, and slide it across
the screen. For example, To scroll up or down on a web page, drag the
page with your finger or stylus.
Swipe
To swipe, slide your finger or the stylus quickly left or right on the screen.
For example, when viewing an image, to view the next or previous image,
swipe the image left or right, respectively.
Flick
To flick, place your finger on the screen, slide it quickly across the screen,
then quickly lift your finger. The content of the screen will continue
scrolling with the speed and direction it had at the moment of release. To
select an item from a scrolling list and to stop the movement, tap the
item.
Touch screen light
The touch screen light is turned off after a period of inactivity. To turn the
screen light on, tap it.
If the touch screen and keys are locked, tapping the screen does not turn
the screen light on. To unlock the screen and keys, slide the lock switch.

■Normal operating position
Your device has an internal antenna. Use the device
only in its normal operating position.
Note: Your device may have internal and
external antennas. As with any radio transmitting device, avoid
touching the antenna area unnecessarily while the antenna is
transmitting or receiving. Contact with such an antenna affects
the communication quality and may cause the device to operate
at a higher power level than otherwise needed and may reduce
the battery life.

■Green tips
Save energy
You do not need to charge your battery so often if you do the following (if
available for your device):

• Close applications and data connections, for example, your Bluetooth
connection, when not in use.
• Decrease the brightness of the screen.
• Set the device to enter the power saver mode after the minimum
period of inactivity if available in your device.
• Deactivate unnecessary sounds, such as key tones.

■Home screen
Home screen is your starting point where you can collect your important
contacts or application shortcuts.
Interactive display elements
1. Clock — To open the alarm clock, tap the
clock.
2. Calendar — To open the calendar
application, tap the date.
3. Contacts bar — To add or use the contact,
tap the corresponding icon.
4. Music player — To run the music player, tap
the corresponding icon.
5. Shortcuts — To access a certain application,
tap the corresonding icon.
6. Go to — Press the left selection key to quickly access a certain feature.
7. Menu — Press the middle selection key to access the main menu.
8. Web — Press the right selection key to access mobile internet service.

Start using contacts bar
To start using the contacts bar and add your contacts to the home screen,
in the home screen, select and the desired contact from contacts list.
Activate and personalise the home screen
To switch the home screen on, select Menu > Settings > Display > Home
Screen > Home screen mode > On.
To customise the home screen view, select Menu> Settings > Display >
Home Screen > Personalise view.
■Flight profile
Use the flight profile in radio sensitive environments - on board aircraft or
in hospital. The flight profile lets you access to such applications as offline
games, calendar, media player and more without connecting to the
wireless network.
Warning: With the flight profile you cannot make or receive any
calls, including emergency calls, or use other features that
require network coverage. To make calls, you must first activate
the device function by changing profiles. If the device has been
locked, enter the lock code. If you need to make an emergency
call while the device is locked and in the flight profile, you may be
also able to enter an official emergency number programmed in
your device in the lock code field and select ’Call’. The device will
confirm that you are about to exit flight profile to start an
emergency call.

3. Call functions
■Proximity sensor
Your device has a proximity sensor. To prevent accidental selections, the
touch screen is disabled automatically during calls when you place the
device next to your ear.
■Make or answer a call
1. In the home screen, enter the phone number, including the country
code and area code, if necessary.
2. Press the call key.
3. To end the call or to cancel the call attempt, press the end key.
To answer a call, press the call key. To reject an incoming call, press the
end key.
■Loudspeaker
Warning: Do not hold the device near your ear when the
loudspeaker is in use because the volume may be extremely loud.
To activate the loudspeaker during a call, select Loudsp.. To deactivate the
loudspeaker, select Normal.
