General information

This document describes how to upgrade SL-1 and Meridian 1 systems
running on hardware and software prior to X11 release 21. When upgrading
a system to X11 release 21, in addition to this document, refer to the
following documents:
— Meridian 1 system installation procedures (553-3001-210)
— Software conversion procedures (553-2001-320)
— Upgrade engineering (553-3001-150)
— Circuit card installation and testing (553-3001-211)
— Disk drive upgrade procedures (553-3001-251)
— X11 input/output guide (553-3001-400)

Please note that the NTPs contain 2 sections relating to hardware upgrades.
These two sections are Upgrade system installation to X11 release 22
(553-3001-258) and Upgrade system installation (553-3001-250).
— Upgrade system installation to X11 release 22 (553-3001-258) defines
theproceduresforsystemsupgradingtooption51C,61Cand81C,where
the existing system is on release 18 or later. This NTP may reference the
upgrade procedures in Upgrade system installation (553-3001-250).

This chapter covers these upgrades:
— SL-1 A, M, S, or MS system to option 51C X11 release 21, below

Upgrading A, M, S, and MS systems to option 51C
To upgrade an SL-1 A, M, S, or MS system to an option 51C, you must
upgradeboththehardwareandthesoftware.Upgradingthe hardware consists
of the following:
— removing the common equipment (CE) from the SL-1 cabinet
— installing a Meridian 1 option 51C column next to the SL-1 cabinet
— installing new connector housings on the SL-1 cabinet
— cabling the cabinet to the option 51C column
Upgrading the software consists of the following:
— If you choose to have the customer database converted, you must send it
to Northern Telecom for conversion; contact your Northern Telecom
representative to arrange for this. Alternatively, you can reenter the
database on the option 51C after the upgrade is complete.

Equipment required
Tables 2-1 and 2-2 list the items required to upgrade an AC- or DC-powered
system to an X11 release 22 Meridian 1 option 51C. Some configurations
may require items not included in the tables. All required items must be
identified and on hand before the upgrade can start.
Letters at the end of a part number represent the minimum vintage equipment
that can be used in the upgrade; only equipment of that vintage or later can be
used. Refer to Product compatibility (553-3001-156) for equipment
compatibility information.
Network cables are required to connect peripheral shelves in the cabinet to
network cards in the column. The number of cables required depends on the
number of network cards installed. These are the cables:
— NT8D86AC cables that connect the network card and the peripheral
buffer card to the I/O panel
— NT9J96 cables that connect the I/O panel in the Core/Network module to
the cabinet I/O panel
An NT8D01 Controller card is provided to support the intelligent peripheral
cards in the new IPE module. If analog peripheral cards are used in the IPE
module, one NT8D21 Ringing Generator must be installed.

Upgrade preparation
Some preparation is required before the conversion of the SL-1 hardware and
software begins. You must first do the following:
— Inventory all equipment required for the upgrade.
— Provideappropriate power and ground fortheincreasedelectricalload of
the option 51C.
— Install the option 51C hardware.
— Back up the customer database to disk by doing a data dump.
Power and ground
Clean power and a good ground are prerequisites to any switch upgrade.
Refer to Upgrade engineering (553-3001-150) to verify that sufficient power
is available for the new equipment. Follow the procedures outlined in
Meridian 1 system installation procedures (553-3001-210) to install new
power equipment and to provide a good ground for the equipment.
Installing option 51C hardware
The option 51C equipment is preconfigured at the factory according to your
requirements. The equipment includes the pedestal, Core/Network modules,
IPE module, cards, and top cap. Cards such as MDUs and power supplies are
shipped in separate packages to prevent damage to the cards.
Figure 2-1 shows the option 51C common equipment and intelligent
peripheral equipment modules and cards installed in their typical card slots.
To install the option 51C at your site, first follow the procedures in
Meridian 1 system installation procedures (553-3001-210) and then continue
with the procedures in this chapter.
Also install any external cables that can be installed at this time without
interrupting service (see “Installing external cables” on page 2-15).
