BCT for MAS
This feature provides the evolution of the Media Application Server to the
IBM BladeCenter T chassis that is NEBS-3-/ETSI-compliant. Network
Equipment Building System 3 (NEBS-3) compliant hardware adheres to
strict requirements for withstanding high temperatures, violent shaking,
lightning strikes, airborne contaminants, fires, and electrostatic discharge.
BCP/MAS co-residency
This feature provides the ability for the Border Control Point (BCP) and
Media Application Server (MAS) applications to co-reside in the same IBM
BladeCenter T chassis. For example, BCP, MAS Ad Hoc Conferencing,
and MAS Announcements can reside in the same chassis at the same
time. Each application runs on its own server card (known as a blade) in
the chassis. Co-residency reduces hardware costs and provides a flexible
growth strategy for existing systems.

IBM x3550
The MAS platform is now supported on the IBM x3550 server. The IBM
x3550 is a direct replacement for the IBM x336 and comes with Windows
Server 2003 preloaded.
MAS Radvision support
This feature covers internal changes to the MCS 5100 software and is
related to the Radvision (RV) Stack Integration feature.
The feature is internal to the MCS and has no user impacts.
MAS Web Collaboration multilingual support
With the MAS Web Collaboration multilingual support feature, the
Web Collaboration service can support multiple languages. The Web
Collaboration user interface and prompts are available in multiple languages.
The Web Collaboration service supports the following languages:
•English
•Parisian French
•German
•Latin American Spanish
•Japanese
•Korean
•Simplified Chinese
•Traditional Chinese
•Portuguese
Meet Me enhancements
This feature provides enhanced usability and management capabilities to
the MAS Meet Me Conferencing service. The introduction of an operator
gives increased management of Meet Me conferences. The operator can
control the individual calls (mute, unmute, terminate and can control the
meeting in the same manner as a chairperson.
In addition to the operator functions, additional features enhance the
conference for the chairperson and participants. These features include
the ability to:
•start the conference before the chairperson arrives
•assume the role of the chair after the chairperson leaves
•call the operator without leaving the conference
•record the audio component of the conference

Introduction
The Media Application Server (MAS) is a generic media-processing platform
that combines the latest protocols and standards with universally accepted
Internet application development specifications. The system is designed
to utilize commercial hardware platforms and common operating systems
without the presence of hardware-based Digital Signal Processing (DSP)
resources. The system exploits the advantages of multimedia protocols
and the IP environment to achieve respectable performance comparable
to more expensive DSP-based Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) solutions.
The software-only approach to media processing is the natural evolution of
existing TDM-centric voice processing platforms as multimedia and data
networks continue to converge.

20 Introduction
Ad Hoc Audio Conferencing service
This service provides on-demand audio conferencing for three or more
parties. It is invoked from all Nortel MCS clients. The Ad Hoc Audio
Conferencing service also supports consultative transfers initiated by
these clients. Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) participants
are supported through gateways but cannot invoke the Ad Hoc Audio
Conferencing service.
To initiate an Ad Hoc conference, a subscriber selects the Join or Conference
button from an MCS Client. Conference functionality is requested using a
SIP INVITE request, which is routed to the Ad Hoc Audio Conferencing
service. The Ad Hoc Audio Conferencing service allocates a bridge (if
resources and licenses are available) and returns a token to the initiator.
The initiating client then sends a SIP REFER message (using the Session
Manager) with the token to all clients it is in active session with, causing all
clients to move their call leg to the bridge. Audio streams are sent to the
bridge for mixing using the Real Time Transport Protocol (RTP). All signaling
to the Ad Hoc Audio conferencing service is through the Session Manager.
Announcements service
You can use the Announcements service to share information with users
when predefined events occur in the system. The following two types of
announcements are provisioned:
•treatment (cause) announcements that inform callers of the status of
their calls
•branding announcements that identify company or product names for
commercial purposes
Note: Nortel does not supply announcement audio files. The software
is shipped without any default announcement recordings. The
administrator is responsible for obtaining announcement files and
provisioning them on the MAS.
The Announcements service is service-package independent. This service
is provisioned at the SIP root domain and, optionally, at the subdomain
levels. All members of the domain receive the same announcements.
Treatment announcements
These prerecorded announcements provide the calling party with an
explanation of why their call cannot be completed immediately. For example,
an announcement can inform the caller that all circuits are busy.
Treatment (cause) announcements consist of one or more audio messages
that you can chain together and for which you can specify a playback
order. You decide which audio messages the caller hears for a given call
failure scenario. Additionally, you can configure these messages to loop
