Installation Guide
Introduction
This document provides information about the Norstar Voice Mail options that are
enabled with a Security Key Code and provides instructions for enabling any
Norstar Voice Mail Security Key Code.
Note: For information about enabling Norstar Voice Mail Voice Channels, refer
to the Norstar Voice Mail Voice Channel Upgrade Guide.
The Norstar Voice Mail system options that are enabled with a Security Key Code
are:
• Audio Messaging Interchange Specification (AMIS)
• Digital Networking
• Desktop Messaging seat licences
• Speech Recognition 2 Channels
• Speech Recognition 2 to 4 Channel Upgrade
Note: The Norstar Voice Mail software must be enabled and initialized before any
other Norstar Voice Mail Security Key Codes can be enabled.
Audio Messaging Interchange Specification (AMIS)
The Audio Messaging Interchange Specification (AMIS) is the telecommunication
industry solution to networking remote voice mail systems. AMIS provides
communication among remote sites established on a network.
Digital Networking
The Digital Networking option serves as a link between Norstar Voice Mail or
Meridian Mail systems at different locations. Networking allows the exchange of
voice and fax messages between linked mailboxes on a network. Norstar Voice
Mail systems must have Digital Networking enabled before receiving or sending
network messages. Meridian Mail systems must be equipped with Meridian Mail
Net Gateway before receiving or sending network messages.
Norstar Voice Mail Digital Networking uses Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
(SMTP) to transfer network messages.

Prerequisites
In order for your Digital Networking software to be functional, the Network
Administrator must:
• install a Network Interface Card in the NAM
• assign the Norstar Voice Mail system a local IP (Internet Protocol) address
• configure the TCP/IP parameters
Desktop Accessories seat licenses
The Norstar Voice Mail Desktop Accessories software consists of three features:
Norstar Voice Mail Desktop Messaging
The Norstar Voice Mail Desktop Messaging feature allows you to create and
receive Norstar Voice Mail Voice or Fax messages on your personal computer
(PC).
Norstar Voice Mail Mailbox Manager
The Norstar Voice Mail Mailbox Manager allows you to administer all the mailbox
features and functions that are available through ƒ ·° ⁄ from your
PC.
Norstar Voice Mail Operator Manager
The Norstar Voice Mail Operator Manager allows the System Coordinator to
administer theNorstar Voice Mail features and functionsthat are availablethrough
ƒ ·° ¤ from a PC.
The Desktop Accessories software has both server and client components. The
server portion resides on the NAM. The client portion of the Desktop Accessories
software must be installed on the PC of each subscriber. The NAM and the PC with
the Desktop Accessories client software, must be on thesame Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Network in order to provide messaging
services to the client.
The server portion of Desktop Accessories software must be enabled by a seat
license Security Key Code.
The seat license allows a specified number of users to be connected to the NAM at
one time. For example, if you have purchased a Desktop Messaging 10 seat license,
a maximum of 10 PCs with the client portion of Desktop Messaging running can be
connected to the NAM at any one time.
Note: Norstar Voice Mail comes with two Desktop Messaging seat licenses
factory enabled. A maximum of two PCs with the client portion of Desktop
Messaging running can be connected to the NAM at any one time.

The Desktop Messaging seat licences can be purchased in four different quantities:
•10
•25
•50
• 100
If you wish to upgrade an original Desktop Messaging seat license, three other
quantities are available:
• 10 - 25
• 25 - 50
• 50 - 100
This guide describes the procedures for enabling any Desktop Messaging seat
license. For instructions on installing the client portion of the Norstar Voice Mail
Desktop Messaging, refer to the Norstar Voice Mail Desktop Accessories Software
Installation Guide.
Speech Recognition Automated Attendant
Speech Recognition Automated Attendant consist of two features:
• External Speech Recognition Automated Attendant - This feature gives outside
callers the abilityof directing their owncalls by speaking the name of the person
they want to reach.
• Internal Speech Recognition Automated Attendant - The feature allows an
internal Norstar Voice Mail user the ability of directing their own calls by using
the Company Directory and speaking the name of the person they want to reach.
AfterSpeechRecognitionisenabled,NorstarVoiceMailautomaticallyenablestwo
Voice Channels for the feature.
Two additional Channels can be added for Speech Recognition by enabling the
Speech Recognition 2 to 4 Channel Upgrade Security Key Code.
Note: Speech Recognition can have a maximum of 4 Channels.

Prerequisites
In order for your Speech Recognition Automated Attendant software to be
functional, you must:
• add 16 MB of memory to the NAM
• install a Media Services Processor Expansion Card (PEC) in slot 4 of the Media
Service Base Interface Card (BIC) in the NAM for a two Channel Speech
Recognition Automated Attendant
• install another PEC in slot 3 of the BIC if the Speech Recognition Automated
Attendant is upgraded to four Voice Channels
For more information on installing a Media Services Processor Expansion Card
(PEC) or memory (SIMM), refer to the Norstar Applications Module Installation
and Maintenance Manual. The Norstar Applications Module Installation and
Maintenance Manual is included on the Norstar Voice Mail4.0 Documentation and
Client Software CD-ROM. All the Norstar Voice Mail Installation Manuals on the
CD-ROM are protected by the password: Norstar99.
Installation overview
To use this manual, you should be familiar with Norstar and Norstar Voice Mail
terminology.
The installer is responsible for:
• reading this guide
• verifying the Security Key Code requested
• determining your internal Norstar Voice Mail system serial number
• completing the "Security Key Code Upgrade Information Sheet"on page 9
• calling the Norstar Key Code Access Line for your Security Key Code
• recording the Security Key Code on the "Security Key Code Upgrade
Information Sheet"on page 9
• enabling the Security Key Code
• backing up the capabilities file
• rebooting the NAM
All procedures for enabling a Security Key Code can be done from a Norstar two-
line display telephone.

Verifying the Security Key Code requested
Before you call the Norstar Key Code Access Line, verify the type of Security Key
Code you are enabling. For example, the Authorization Number on the Norstar
Voice Mail Security Key Code Information Sheet will look like:
In the example above, 00000000 is the Authorization Number and AMIS is the type of
Security Key Code to be enabled. In this example, you would be enabling
Norstar Voice Mail AMIS.
Determining your internal Norstar Voice Mail system serial number
Each Norstar Voice Mail system is identified by a unique internal serial number.
You must have this number written down on the "Security Key Code Upgrade
Information Sheet"on page 9 before you call for your Security Key Code.
To view the internal serial number:

Completing the Security Key Code Upgrade Information Sheet
The Security Key Code Upgrade Information Sheet outlines your Norstar Voice
Mailsystemconfiguration. Thispage mustbecompletedbeforeyou callthe Norstar
Key Code Access Line for your upgrade Security Key Code.
The Security Key Code Upgrade Information Sheet includes information about:
• Current number of Voice Channels installed on the Norstar Voice Mail system
• Internal Norstar Voice Mail serial number
Getting your Norstar Voice Mail Security Key Code
After you have completed the Security Key Code Upgrade Information Sheet, you
are ready to call the Norstar Key Code Access Line. Keep the Upgrade Information
Sheet in front of you and dial 1-800-684-5825.
When you are given the Security Key Code, ensure you write it down in the space
provided on the Security Key Code Upgrade Information Sheet.
Entering Security Key Codes
This procedure is for enabling any Norstar Voice Mail Security Key Code .
To enable the Security Key Code:
1. Press ƒ · ° ‹.
2. Enter the System Coordinator Mailbox number and
password and press OK.
3. Press › ›.
4. Press ADD.
5. Enter your Security Key Code and press OK .
Note: After a Key Code is enabled, you should
back up the NAM capabilities file.
6. Press ® to end this programing session.

Backing up the NAM capabilities file
After you have enabled the Security Key Code, you must back up the Norstar Voice
Mail capabilities file. This file contains all upgrade and capability information
about your Norstar Voice Mail system and must be restored along with
Norstar Voice Mail programing if a hard disk drive failure occurs.
Note: If this file is lost and your hard disk drive fails, all upgrades made to your
Norstar Voice Mail system will be lost. Ensure you store this backup in a
safe place.
Before you begin, ensure you have a blank IBM formatted 1.44 MB 3.5" floppy
disk. Label the Diskette SEKUR/Capabilities File.
To back up the capabilities file:
After you have completed backing up the capabilities file, make sure you store the
floppy diskette in a safe place.
1. Press ƒ · ⁄ fi .
2. Enter the default password ¤¤¤‹‡‡¤
(ACCESS2).
3. Press ADMIN .
4. Press NEXT until the display shows:

Rebooting the NAM
After you have completed the upgrade and backed up the capabilities file, you must
reboot the Norstar Voice Mail system. When you reboot the system, the new
Norstar Voice Mail functionality is automatically enabled.
The reboot option offers four choices: Graceful, Quick, Immediate and Scheduled.
The Graceful option allows an application to terminate all existing calls before
shutting down and restarting. The Quick option allows only 45 seconds for an
application to terminate before the reboot, the Immediate option allows 15 seconds
and the Scheduled option allows you to choose a time when the system will
automatically reboot.
When you are rebooting Norstar Voice Mail, you should use the Graceful option.
However, if the system is not responding to the command, you can speed up the
process by changing the option to a Quick reboot.
