This regulatory information is provided in accordance with the applicable North American requirements as outlined in
"Product Safety" standard for Safety of Information Technology Equipment UL 60950/CSA-22.2 No. 60950 and
"Electromagnetic Emissions Interference" standards FCC Part 15 Subpart B/ICES 003, for the Analog Media Gateway
product family.
Only qualified service personnel may install this equipment, having appropriate training and experience necessary to be
aware of hazards to which they are exposed in performing a task and of measures to minimize the danger to themselves or
other persons.
This equipment must be connected to an electrical socket with a third-wire Earth conductor.
The safety status of each port on the gateway is declared and detailed in the table below:
TNV-3: Circuit whose normal operating voltages exceeds the limits for an SELV circuit under normal operating conditions
and on which over voltages from Telecommunication Networks are possible
TNV-2: Circuit whose normal operating voltages exceeds the limits for an SELV circuit under normal operating conditions
and is not subjected to over voltages from Telecommunication Networks
SELV: Safety extra low voltage circuit.
Notice to Users
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B Digital Device, pursuant to Part 15 of the
FCC Rules and ICES 003 Canadian EMI requirements. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against
harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and,
if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications.
However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause
harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the User

• Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.

Preface
The Norstar VoIP Gateway is an accessory that provides up to four IP telephony trunks for a
Norstar system. These IP telephony trunks allow you to establish voice calls to other IP telephony
enabled telephones systems using a data networking connection. Examples of IP telephony
enabled telephone systems are a Business Communications Manager system or another Norstar
KSU equipped with a Norstar VoIP Gateway.
Before you begin
This guide is intended for installers of a Norstar VoIP Gateway system. Prior knowledge of IP
networks is required.
Before using this guide, the Norstar KSU must be configured and tested.
This guide assumes:
• You have planned the telephony and data requirements for your Norstar system.
• The Norstar KSU is installed and initialized, and the hardware is working. External lines and
internal telephones and telephony equipment are connected to the KSU or Expansion
Modules.
• Configuration of lines is complete.
• You have a working knowledge of the Windows operating system and of graphical user
interfaces.
• If you manage the data portion of the system, you are familiar with network management and
applications.
• You are familiar with the setup and use of Norstar systems.

Chapter 1
Installing the VoIP Gateway
The Norstar VoIP Gateway provides IP Telephony functionality for your Norstar system. With this
functionality you can establish calls to other IP Telephony enabled telephones systems, such as
another Norstar system with a VoIP Gateway or a Business Communications Manager, using your
data network.
Figure 1 shows the steps required to install the VoIP Gateway.

Norstar system requirements
To use the VoIP Gateway, you must have a Norstar system with the following:
• a Norstar Modular ICS system or Compact ICS system
• a Loop start trunk card with disconnect supervision
Norstar Trunk Cards must support CLID if you want to use CLID features
• 1 to 4 loop start line trunk lines available for the VoIP Gateway
Data Networking recommendations
Nortel Networks recommends the following for the data network you connect to the VoIP
Gateway:
• the router should connect to your enterprise data service
• for best performance, the router should be capable of applying a QoS policy for voice using
either:
• standard Diffserv
• another QoS policy that keys from the MAC address or IP address of the gateway
• if elements of your network includes the use of the public data network or an insecure link, the
router should also implement a Virtual Private Network (VPN) service, such as Nortel
Contivity. A VPN provides a virtual network between business locations that is secure from
observation and attack by data network users that are not within the VPN.
• Complete a network traffic analysis to verify that the network will support the additional
traffic load of the VoIP Gateway.
Unpacking the VoIP Gateway
Ensure that the VoIP Gateway package contains:
• VoIP Gateway
• AC power cable
• CD (software and documentation)
• Emergency Line adapter cable
• 3 brackets (2 short, 1 long) and bracket-to-device screws
Notify Nortel Networks or your local supplier of any damage or discrepancies.
Note: For information about the systems and devices that the Norstar VoIP Gateway
works with, refer to the Interoperability Appendix in the Norstar VoIP Gateway
Configuration Guide.

Mounting the VoIP Gateway
The VoIP Gateway can be mounted on a desktop or shelf, in a standard 19-inch rack, or on the
wall.
Mounting the VoIP Gateway on a desktop or shelf
No brackets are required to mount the VoIP Gateway on a desktop or shelf. Simply place the VoIP
Gateway on the desktop in the position you require (refer to Figure 2 on page 15). You can now
connect the cables to the VoIP Gateway as described in “Connecting the cables to the VoIP
Gateway” on page 18.

1Remove the two screws on the right side of the VoIP Gateway nearest the front panel.
2Insert the peg on the short bracket into the third air vent down on the column of air vents
nearest the front panel.
3Swivel the bracket until the holes in the bracket line up with the two empty screw holes on the
VoIP Gateway.
4Use the screws found in the VoIP Gateway packaging to attach the short bracket to the right
side of the VoIP Gateway.
5Remove the two screws on the left side of the VoIP Gateway nearest the front panel.
6Position the long bracket so that the holes in the bracket line up with the two empty screw
holes on the VoIP Gateway.
7Use the screws found in the VoIP Gateway packaging to attach the long bracket to the left side
of the VoIP Gateway.
8Position the VoIP Gateway in the rack.
9Use four screws to attach the VoIP Gateway to the rack.
These screws are not provided with the VoIP Gateway.
You can now connect the cabling as described in “Connecting the cables to the VoIP Gateway” on
page 18.

Mounting the VoIP Gateway on a wall
1Remove the screw on the side of the VoIP Gateway that is nearest the bottom and the front
panel.
2Insert the peg on the short bracket into the third air vent down on the column of air vents
nearest the front panel.
3Swivel the bracket so that the side of the bracket is aligned with the base of the VoIP Gateway
and the hole in the bracket line up with the empty screw hole.
4Attach the bracket using one of the screws provided in the VoIP Gateway packaging.
5Repeat steps 1to 4to attach a short bracket to the other side of the VoIP Gateway.
6Position the VoIP Gateway on the wall with the base of the device next to the wall.
7Use four screws to attach the VoIP Gateway to the wall.
These screws are not provided with the VoIP Gateway.
You can now connect the cabling as described in “Connecting the cables to the VoIP Gateway” on
page 18.

1Connect a 2-wire line cord to one of the RJ-11 connectors on the rear of the VoIP Gateway.
Figure 5 shows the connections on the rear of the VoIP Gateway.
2Connect the other end of the line cord to an analog trunk port on the Norstar system.
The line cord you use must be less than 3,000 m (10,000 ft.) using regular 24 AWG line cord.
3Repeat steps 1and 2for each port you are using.
4Insert the RJ-45 connector on the Ethernet cable to the RJ-45 socket on the rear of the VoIP
Gateway.
5Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to your LAN.

Installing the Emergency Line
The Emergency Line provides a connection to a PSTN line when there is no power. When there is
a power failure, the Emergency Line Adapter connects the Norstar trunk line used for port number
4 to the PSTN line that is connected to the other side of the Emergency Line Adapter.
In most installations, the Emergency Line is not required. Normally, PSTN lines are already
available on the Norstar system and can be used when the VoIP Gateway is not functioning. As
well, you can configure the Norstar system to have an Emergency Telephone that can be used
when the Norstar system is not functioning or there is a power failure.
To install the Emergency Line:
1Connect the Emergency Line Adapter to port number 4.
2Connect a Norstar analog trunk line to Port A on the Emergency Line Adapter.
3Connect an analog PSTN line to Port B on the Emergency Line Adapter.

Powering up the VoIP Gateway
To power up the VoIP Gateway:
1Connect one end of the AC power cable to the power supply socket in the VoIP Gateway.
2Connect the other end of the AC power cable to the wall outlet.
After connecting power to the VoIP Gateway, the Ready and LAN LEDs on the front panel turn to
green after a self-testing period of about 20 seconds. Any malfunction changes the Ready LED to
red. For more information about the VoIP Gateway LEDs, refer to “Monitoring the VoIP Gateway
front panel LEDs” on page 25.
You are now ready to set the initial configuration parameters on your VoIP Gateway. For
information about initializing the VoIP Gateway, refer to “Initializing the VoIP Gateway” on page
20.
Initializing the VoIP Gateway
To initialize the VoIP Gateway, you must have one of the following web browsers installed on
your computer:
• Microsoft™ Internet Explorer™ (version 5.0 and higher)
• Netscape™ Navigator™ (version 7.0 and higher).
To initialize the VoIP Gateway:
1Power-up the VoIP Gateway. After self-testing, the Ready LED on the front panel turns green.
This normally takes about 20 seconds. If there is a malfunction, the Ready LED turns red.
2Set the IP address and subnet mask of your computer to the following:
• IP address: 10.1.10.12
• Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
For details on changing the IP address and subnet mask of your computer, refer to Windows™
Online Help (Start>Help).
Danger: Electrical shock hazard
Electrical shock hazards are possible with this equipment.
To minimize risk to service personnel and users, the VoIP Gateway must be connected to
an outlet with a third wire ground.
