Introduction
Thank you for purchasing this laser printer.
The PG L8L is a desktop laser printer specially designed for the
demanding small office and home office users. It uses a highly innovative
printing technology, which provides all the performance and power you
need for your business, small workgroup and personal printing.
In this manual you will find all the information essential for the operation
and care of your laser printer. So, do keep it handy should you experience
any difficulties with the printer.

What This Manual Contains
This manual consists of the following five chapters and three appendices:
Chapter 1: Setting Up Your Printer
Covers the setup and basic operations of the printer. Read this chapter
before attempting to print.
Chapter 2: Printing
Gives you guidelines for selecting and handling/storing media products as
well as detailed specifications for print materials. Also, this chapter
instructs you on how to load print media.
Chapter 3: Troubleshooting
Describes procedures to help isolate and solve print quality and printer
problems. Read this chapter when a problem occurs, before calling for
service.
Chapter 4: Maintenance
Discusses how to handle and use the printer supplies and maintain the
printer. Read this chapter before attempting to use the supplies or
performing any maintenance.
Chapter 5: Adding Memory
Describes how to install (and remove) a memory SIMM to increase printer
memory.
Appendix A: Printer Specifications
Appendix B: Safety Notes
Describes the precautions required to prevent personal injury and
equipment damage. Read this section before installing the printer.

Place yourprinter on aflat, hard,stablesurface nearyour computer.Leave
enough space around the printer, so that you can easily:
• Open the printer cover.
• Load the paper.
• Retrieve the paper.
• Open the front single sheet output tray and retrieve the paper in the
front output tray.
Be sure to allow air circulation around the vents to prevent the printer from
overheating.
Do not place the printer:
• In direct sunlight.
• Near heat sources or air conditioners.
• In dusty or dirty environments.
The printer should not be placed in a location where there could be abrupt
temperature or humidity changes.

Remove the printer and all accessories from the packing carton. Save the
carton and packing materials in case you need to repack the printer.
Make sure you have the following items:
You need an IEEE 1284-compliant parallel printer cable. The printer cable
may not be included with your printer, in which case you can purchase one
from your dealer or retailer.

Holds a single sheet of special print
media (transparency, label, envelope,
and heavy weight paper) with print
side facing up.
2 Face-down Stacker
Holds printed documents. If printed on
plain paper, a maximum of 100 sheets
can be held.
3 Stacker Extender
Supports paper stacked in the paper
output bin.
4 Manual Feeder
Used to feed a single sheet of paper.
Also used to print envelopes and
special print media.
5 Multipurpose Paper Feeder
Holds 150 sheets of plain paper.
6 Tray Extender
Supports paper stacked in the
multipurpose paper feeder.
7 Paper Guides
Adjusts to the width of paper in the
multipurpose paper feeder.

Supports paper for the manual feeder.

The operator panel has three indicator lights and 1 button.
Indicator Lights:

ERROR (on) • There is no image cartridge.
• The cover is open.
• There is a paper jam (if PAPER light is also on).
• Other error condition (requires servicing)
ERROR (blink) • Printer memory is insufficient for print job.

PAPER (on) • The paper tray is empty.
• There is a paper jam (if ERROR light is also on).
PAPER (blink) • The printer is in manual feed mode.
Push On/Off-line button to feed paper from
manual feeder.
READY (on) • The printer is ready to receive and process data.
READY (blink) • The printer is receiving or processing data.
READY (off) • The printer is off-line.
ALL (blink) • Possible printer failure.

On/Off-line Button Function:
Function Usage
On-line/Off-line Pressing the button toggles the printer between
on-line (READY light on) and off-line (READY light
off) status.
Manual Feed To print a manual feed job:
When the PAPER light blinks, press the button to
print (required for each page of the print job).
Reset To clear all data from the printer’s memory except
permanent fonts and macros, and then restore the
user default settings:
Press the button to turn the printer off-line. With
the READY light off, press and hold down the
button until all lights are blinking (approximately
four seconds), then release the button.
Self-Test To perform a printer self-test:
While the printer is on-line (READY light on),
press and hold down the button until all three
lights are blinking (approximately four seconds),
then release the button. A one-page printer status
sheet will be printed.
Image Cartridge
Cleaning To remove excess toner from the image cartridge: While the printer is on-line (READY light on),
press and hold down the button until all three
lights remain lit (not blinking; approximately seven
seconds) and the printer begins to cycle up (starts
feeding paper), then release the button.
One sheet will be printed.
