Congratulaonsyouhavejustpurchasedoneofthefinestoutboardmotorlisavailabletoday.Withproper
installaonandcare,thismotorliwillprovideyouwithyearsoftroublefreeuseandperformance.
Pleasetakeafewmomentstoreviewtheinformaoncontainedinthisbooklettofamiliarizeyourselfwith
theinstallaonproceduressuggestedtosuccessfullymountyournewmotorli.Installaoniseasy
parcularlywhenyouknoweachstepaheadofme.

GETTING STARTED
Hereisalistofthetoolsandhardwarethatyouwillneed:
Tools and Equipment:
1. Electricdrillwith1/8,3/16,and1/2inchdrillbits
2. Two3/4inchwrenches
3. APhillipsheadscrewdriver
4. Forheaviermotors,ahoisttolithemotorwhileinstallingthebracket

4–½inchdiameterstainlesssteelHexCapScrewsoftheappropriatelength*
4-½inchstainlesssteelNyloninsertnuts
8–½inchstainlesssteelflatwashers
1–TubeofclearRTVsiliconforsealingthetransommounngholes(recommended)
1–Tubeofdielectricgreasefortheelectricalconnecons(recommended)
2–Securityboltsthatmatchtheclampbracketonyourmotor(recommended)

BEFORE STARTING
Becauseeachinstallaonisdifferent,youwillhavetodeterminewhatmounnghardwareisrequiredfor
yourparcularsituaon.Inallcasesmakesureyouusehighquality1/2inchstainlesssteelbolts.
Forbolt‐on motorsyouwillneedtwosetsofbolts,nutandwashers—onesettomountthebrackettothe
boatandonesetuptomountthemotortothebracket.
Onexisnginstallaons,youmaybeabletoreusetheboltsthathavebeenusedforyoumotortomountthe
trimandltbrackettotheboat.However,makesurethattheboltsarehighqualitystainlesssteelandare
ingoodcondion.
Forclamp‐on motors,youwillneedonesetof1/2inchbolts,nutsandwasherstomountthebracketto
theboat,plustheappropriatesecuritybolts.
How to measure for Transom Mounng Bolts
Becauseeachtransomisdifferent,youwillneedtodeterminetherightlengthofmounngbolts.For
installaonswheremounngholeswillbedrilled,youcantakethismeasurementaertheholeshavebeen
drilled.SimplymeasurethethicknessofthetransomandAdd 2inches.
How to measure Bolts for Mounng the Motor to the Trim & Tilt
Bracket:
Todeterminethelengthforbolt-onmotors,measurethethicknessofthemounngbracketonyourmotor,
andadd 1inchforthethicknessofthetrimandltbracket.
Make sure motor hoses and cables are long enough for set back
Thismotorlibracketplacesyouroutboard7inchesfartherawayfromthecontrols,baeryandgastank.
Checktomakesurethateachofthesecablesandhoseshastherequiredamountofslack.Aneasywayto
checkthisistounclamptheoutboardfromtheboatwhileitissecuredtoanenginehoist.Thensimply
movethemotorback7incheswithallofthehosesandcablessllconnected.
NOTE: Because of this set‐back feature, you will generally noce an improvement in your boat’s
performance. The set‐back will place your prop further from the transom where there is less water
turbulence which means your prop can perform beer.

MOUNTING THE TRIM & TILT BRACKET
Thetrimandltbracketispre-drilledwiththemarineindustrystandardBIAboltholepaern.Ifyourboat
alreadyhasthecorrectboltholepaerndrilled,youmayproceedtoStep4.Ifnewholesneedtobemade,
followthesesteps:
1. Posionthetransomplateinthecenterofthetransom.Checktomakesurethattheholeplacement
willnotinterferewithanymoldings,rivets,etc.
2. Onceposioned,useapunchtomarktheholelocaon.
3. Usinga3/16bit,drillapilotholeineachlocaontomakesuretheholesareproperlyalignedandthat
therewillbenointerferencewiththemounngbolts.Thenfinishdrillingtheholeswitha½inchdrill
bit.
4. Beforemounngtheunit,applyabeadofRTVsiliconesealantaroundtheedgeofeachholetoinsure
awaterghtseal.
5. Tomountthetrim<brackettothetransom,usefour½inchdiameterstainlesssteelboltswith
washersandnylonlockingnuts.Startbyplacingaboltwithawasherintoeachoftheupper
mounngholes.Sckapieceoftapeovertheheadofeachbolttoholdtheminplace,thenlithe
unituptothetransom,aligntheboltsandslidetheunitintoplace.Installthewashersandthenuts
insidetheboat.Donotghtenthenutscompletelyunlthelowerboltshavebeeninstalled.
NOTE: To provide more clearance for installing the mounng bolts, you may have to temporarily
connect the unit to a baery to run the bracket to an open posion. This will make installing the upper
bolts easier.

6.Completetheinstallaonbyinserngthetwolowermounngbolts,togetherwithwasherandthe
nylonlockingnuts.Tighteneachboltevenly,takingcarenottoovertorquethenuttothepointwhere
thetransomorthebracketcouldbedamaged.

MOUNTING THE MOTOR
Bolt‐on Outboard
1. Thebracketispre-drilledtofitmostoutboardmotorbrackets.
2,Mountthemotortothebracketusing41/2inchstainlesssteelboltsoftheappropriatelength,together
withwashersonboltsidesasshown.Secureeachboltwithanylonlockingnut,makingsureyoughten
eachnutevenlyovertorquing.
3. IfyourmotorbracketdoesnotmatchthestandardBIAboltholepaern,you may drill addional holes
intothebrackettomatchthemounngholesofyourmotorbracket.
Clamp‐On Outboards
1. Usingatreatedwood2x4,cutawoodshimtoapproximately11incheslong.
2.Placetheshimontheinsideofthemounngplateandholditinplacewhile
placingthemotoroverthetopedgeofthebracket.

3.Leavingapproximatelya1/2inchspace,ghtentheclampssecurely.
4.Beforefinalinstallaon,slowlyrunthebracketuptoafulllttocheckforinterferencewiththeclamp
bracketortheclamphandles.Reposionthemotorasnecessary.
5.Aachsecurityboltstothebracketbydrillingmounngholesintothebracketthatmatchthesizeand
locaonofthesecurityboltholesontheoutboardbracket.Alsousecableesorothermeanstosecure
theclamphandlestopreventaccidentallooseningduringoperaon.

THE BREATHER TUBE
Theactuatortoyourmotorliisdesignedforsafeboanguse.However,becauseofitsprecisiondesign,it
isequippedwitha“breathertube”toallowtheactuatortohavefullupanddownfuncon.Thebreather
tubeMUSTbemountedinawaytopreventwaterintake.Thebestlocaonforthisisunderthehoodofthe
motor.
1.Removethecoverfromtheoutboardmotor
2. Insertthebreathertubethroughanexisngopeninginthebaseofthemotor,orifnecessary,drilla
3/8inchholeforaccess.
3.Makingsurethereisplentyofslackinthetubetoallowforfullmovementofthemotor,aachthe
breathertubeinsidethemotorcompartmentinalocaonthatwillnotbeaffectedbymovingengine
parts.Usecableestoinsurethattheendofthetubestayshighupinthecompartmenttoprevent
accidentalwaterintake.ThetubeMUSTbeinstalledsothatnowatercangetinsidethebreather
tube.

ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
Thisunitisdesignedtooperateoffofastandard12voltbaeryandisgenerallyconnectedtotheboats
mainstarngbaery.Followtheillustraonandinstruconsbelow:
1. Mounttheelectricalcontrolboxinsidetheboatusingthetwo½inchscrewsprovided
2. Thepushbuonswitchcanbemountedinanyconvenientlocaonnearthedriver’sseat.Forller
operatedmotors,theswitchcanbestrappedtothellerarmwithcablees.
3. Runthethreeprongedswitchleadtothecontrolrelayboxandthetwoprongedleadfromthe
controlboxtothebracket.
4. Applyasmallamountofdielectricgreasetoeachoftheconnectorsandplugthemtogether.(Itis
alsorecommendedthattheseconneconsbewrappedwithawaterprooftapeorshrinktube
applied
5. Aerallconneconsaremade,connecttheringterminalleadstothebaery.Connecttheredlead
totheposive(+)terminalandtheblackleadtothenegave(-)terminal.
6. Testtheunitbyrunningitupanddowntomakesurethatthereisadequateslackintheleads.Then
usingthecableessupplied,secureallofthewiringtomakesureitdoesnotgetpinchedduring
operaon.

OPERATING TIPS
Withpropercareandusage,yourMotorLiunitwillprovideyouwithyearsoftrouble-freeuse.Thereare
twomaincausesoffailurewhereprecauonisrequired.
1. Trailering
Theactuatorusedinyourmotorliisaprecisionengineeredelectro-mechanicaldevicethatcandeliver
upto5,000lbsofforceforhighspeedtrimming.Throughauniquelinearballscrewgearmechanism,the
actuatorisdesignedto“park”whereyouputitanditshouldneversele.
However,aswithoriginalequipmenttrimandlts,theunitisnotdesignedtosupportyourmotorwhen
trailering.Traileringcanexertsignificantforcesonyouroutboardthatcancausedamagetothemotorli
mechanismandtotheoutboarditself.Thereforewhentrailering,always trailer with the motor in the
fully lowered posion oruseatransomsupportbracket.(Pantheroffersthe55-1900orthe55-2100
shownhere)

1. Electrical Connecons
Periodically,andatleastonceperseason,besuretochecktheelectricalconnecon.Asnecessary,clean
offallconneconsandreapplydielectricgreasetoprotecttheconneconfromcorrosion
2. Use in Salt Water Area
Thismotorlibracketisconstructedofhighqualitymarinegradealuminumalloysandstainlesssteel
hardwaremakingtheunitsuitableforuseinmanymarineenvironments.However,ifthisunitistobe
usedinsaltwaterarea,itisnecessarytoaachazincanodetoreducecorrosiveeffects.(Panther55-
9000)Anodesmaybepurchasedthroughthedealerorbycallingthenumbertowardthebackofthis
booklet.Topreventprematurediscoloraonandcorrosion,parcularlyinsaltwaterandbrackishwater
areas,itisagoodpraccetoperiodicallywashdowntheMotorLiunitwithfreshwater.
3. Adding Grease
Theactuatorgearcaseisfilledwithgreaseatthefactory.Itmayoccasionallybenecessarytoaddmore
greasethroughthezerk.Youcanaddgreasewiththeunitinanyposion.IfyourTrimandTiltreceives
heavyuse,perhapsonceayeargiveitasupplementalpumportwoofgrease.Donotoverdoit,andit
probablyisn’tnecessaryatallunlesstheactuatorstartstobecomenoisy.Pungintoomuchgrease
maycausemoredamagethangood.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Thefollowingaresomeprocedurestofollowbeforecallinginforserviceorwarrantywork:
UNIT DOES NOT RUN
1.CheckBaery&Connecons.
2.CheckElectricMotor.
Useadoubleleadjumperandconnectthemotor’stwo
prongplugdirectlytoabaery.
3.Ifthemotorslldoesnotwork,disconnectthemotorfromthe
actuator(heldonbytwosmallnuts)andplugdirectlytothe
baery.
4.Ifthemotorworkswhenitisdisconnectedfromtheactuator,the
actuator/motorassemblyneedsreplaced.
5.Ifthemotordoesnotworkwhendisconnectedfromtheactuator,
themotorneedsreplaced.
6.CheckRelayControl&PushBuonSwitch.
Unplugthethreeprongconnectorattherelaycontrol
andrunajumperwirebetweentheredandthegreenwiresto
godownandbetweentheredandbluewirestogoup.
IftheunitdoesnotruntheproblemistheRelayControl.
IfitdoesworkthentheproblemisthePushBuonSwitch.
UNIT RUNS IN ONE DIRECTION ONLY
CheckRelayControl&PushBuonSwitch
Unplugthethreeprongconnectorattherelaycontrol
andrunajumperwirebetweentheRedandtheGreenwiresto

Removethroughboltthatisclosesttothewiresandlookforan
indicaonofrustonthebolt.Rustindicateswaterinsideofthemotor
housing.Motorandactuatorshouldbereplaced.
