TheSurfaceInterfaceUnitisawatertightenclosurethathousestheGPSHeadingSensor
andactsasajunctionboxforconnectionstosensorsandtheSonarProcessor.

TheSonarHeadtransmitsandreceivesanacousticpulsewhendeployedunderwater.
TheSonarHeadrequiresDCpowerviaacableattachedtotheSurfaceInterfaceUnit.Inthe
M3Bathysystem,theSonarHeadisattachedtothebottomofthePoleMount.
Note
TheM3SonarHead’ sblackpolyurethanetransducerisdelicate.AlwayskeeptheGuard
Ringandprotectivecoveroverthetransducerduringinstallationandstorage.
MotionReferenceUnit
Inordertooperatecorrectly,theM3BathyrequiresinputfromaMotionReferenceUnit
(MRU).
TheMRUisusedtocorrectforpitchandrollmovement
oftheSonarHeadresultingfrombeingdeployedona
movingvessel.
TheMotionReferenceUnitisverysensitivetoimpacts.
BecarefulnottodroptheMRU.Theelectronicsinsidewill
bedamagedandneedtobereturnedtothemanufacturer
forrepair.

TheM3PoleMountisdesignedforinstallationonsmallvesselsofopportunity.
NormallythePoleMountisinstalledonthevessel’sportside.ThetopofthePoleMountis
abovewaterandholdstheSurfaceInterfaceUnit.ThebottomofthePoleMountisbelow
waterandholdstheMotionReferenceUnitandSonarHeadinpositionduringasurvey.

Asoundspeedsensorisrequiredtoaccuratelymeasurein-waterspeedneartheSonarHead.
Soundvelocityproler
Asoundvelocityprolermustbeusedtomeasurethein-watersoundspeedproleofthe
watercolumntocorrectforraybendingduringdatapost-processing.
AsoundvelocitysensorcanbeconnectedtotheM3SonarProcessorusingoneofthespare
RS232portsonthe4-PortRS232ExpressCardadapter.Thisassumesthesoundvelocity
sensorhasacableconnectedtoit,andprovidingpowertoit.
CurrentlytheV aleportminiSVSsensorissupportedintheM3Software.
RefertotheM3SonarOperator’ sManualformoreinformation.
Portablepowerunit
ItisimportanttoensurecontinuousoperationoftheM3Bathyindependentofvarying
qualityofthevessel'smainssupply.Theuseofanuninterruptiblepowersupplyistherefore
required.
AlwaysuseeitheranUninterruptiblePowerSupply(UPS)orDCtoACtruesinewave
inverter(PowerInverter)topoweryoursystem.Yourpowerunitmustbeabletosupply
upto280wattstotheM3Bathy.
Additionaloptionalitems
TheM3Bathydeliverywillcontainthemainspartsrequiredforbasicoperation.Several
optionalitemsarealsoavailable.SomemaybeorderedfromKongsberg,othersmaybe
purchasedlocally.Theseoptionalitemsarenotrequiredfornormaluse,butmayoffer
advantagesrelatedtoinstallation,maintenance,oroperationalfunctionality.
HelmsmanDisplay
Thehelmsmandisplayisusefulforthehelmsmantofollowpreplannedsurveylinesand
showbathymetrycoverage.
AnycommercialdisplaycanbeusedwiththeM3BathyMultibeamechosounder,provided
thatthedisplaymeetstheminimumrequirements.Ifyouintendtousemanyviews
simultaneously,wesuggestthatyoupurchasealargehigh-resolutiondisplay.

TheSonarProcessorscreencanbedifculttoseeindirectsunlight.Asunshadeis
recommendedfordaylightviewing.
Generalsafetyrules
Thefollowingsafetyprecautionsmustbefollowedatalltimesduringinstallationand
maintenancework.
WARNING
Thevoltagesusedtopowerthisequipmentarepotentiallylethal.Youmustnever
workaloneonhigh-voltageequipment!
•Youmustalwaysswitchoffallpowerbeforeinstallationormaintenanceworkonthe
M3Bathysystem.
Usethemaincircuitbreaker,andlabelthebreakerwithawarningsignthatinforms
othersthatmaintenanceorinstallationworkisinprogressonthesystem.
•Forsafetyreasons,twopersonsmustalwaysbepresentduringtroubleshootingwith
powerON.
•Readandunderstandtheapplicablerstaidinstructionsrelatedtoelectricshock.
•Whenevermaintenanceisinprogress,itisessentialthatarstaidkitisavailable,and
thatallpersonnelarefamiliarwiththerstaidinstructionsforelectricalshock.

Observethegeneralrequirementsrelatedtothesupplypower.
Thesupplyvoltagetotheequipmentmustkeptwithin±10%oftheinstallation’snominal
voltage.Maximumtransientvoltagevariationsonthemainswitchboard’sbus-barsarenot
toexceed-15%to+20%ofthenominalvoltage(exceptunderfaultconditions).
UninterruptiblePowerSupply(UPS)requirements
ObservetheserequirementsrelatedtotheUninterruptiblePowerSupply(UPS).
TheUninterruptiblePowerSupply(UPS)musthavethecapacitytoindependentlymaintain
powertotheM3Bathyforaminimumof10minutes.
ThisensuresthattheM3Bathycanbeswitchedoffinacontrolledmannerintheevent
ofapowerfailure.
Electromagneticcompatibilityinstallationguidelines
KongsbergMesotechLimitedequipmentandaccessoriesarecompliantwithapplicable
electromagneticcompatibility(EMC)regulations.Thiscomplianceensureselectromagnetic
interference(EMI)betweenthesystemcomponentsandotheron-boardequipmentis
minimizedtoreducetheriskofperformancedegradationduetosuchinterference.Correct
installationisrequiredtomaintainelectromagneticcompatibility.
EmploythefollowingrecommendationstoensurethebestEMCperformance:
•UseonlyKongsberg-speciedcablesandcheckthatanyferritesuppressionlterstted
onthecablesareinstalledaspertheinstallationdrawings.Suppressionferritesare
importantforminimizingelectromagneticinterference.Ifonehastoberemovedduring
theinstallation,re-installthesuppressionlterinitsoriginalpositiononthecablebefore
usingthesystem.
