1. Introduction
The A80 is a SmartDesktop payment terminal powered by Android™ that can be used as a countertop PIN
pad or an indoor portable device. Packed with the latest PCI PTS 5.x, SRED, and NFC contactless
certifications, A80 delivers the highest payment security and protects transaction privacy. Equipped with
a built-in camera, high definition 4-inch touchscreen display, and multiple network connectivity options,
A80 delivers the best user experience to the modern consumers.

1.3 Acronyms and Terms
Acronym Definition
Bluetooth® The Bluetooth® word mark and logos are registered trademarks owned by
Bluetooth SIG, Inc. and any use of such marks by PAX Technology, Inc. is under
license. Other trademarks and trade names are those of their respective
owners.
DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - A network management protocol used
on IP networks. The DHCP server dynamically assigns an IP address and other
network configuration parameters to each device on the network.
EMV® Europay, Mastercard, and VISA. EMV® is a registered trademark or trademark
of EMVCo, LLC in the United States and other countries around the world. The
EMV trademark is owned by EMVCo, LLC.
IMEI The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique number for
identifying a device on a mobile network. It has 15 digits and is assigned to
every GSM phone — CDMA devices have a MEID number.
LAN Local Area Network
Micro SD Removable flash memory card used to store information.
MSR Magnetic Stripe Reader
NFC Near Field Communication
POS Point of Sale or Point of Service
SAM A Secure Access Module (or Secure Application Module) is based on
SmartCard Integrated circuits and is used to enhance the security and
cryptography performance in devices, commonly in devices needing to
perform secure transactions, such as payment terminals. It can be used for
cryptographic computation and secure authentication against smart cards or
contactless EMV cards.
SIM Subscriber Identity Module Card – A smart card that stores data GSM cellular
network subscribers.
SSID Service Set Identifier - The name for a Wi-Fi or WLAN network. Mobile devices
look for all networks in range when they attempt to connect to local Wi-Fi.
WAN Wide Area Network - Cellular phone data networks run on a WAN. It covers a
broad area and many devices in that area.
Wi-Fi™ A trademarked term used to describe the wireless networking technology that
allows computers and other devices to communicate over a wireless signal.

3.2 AC Power Connection
The A80 can be powered by (5V, 1A) power cable into the power port on the back of the device.
Please Note:
• Connecting the power source before all the other cables are connected first may
result in damage to the terminal or connected devices.
• Disconnecting the power while applications are downloading may result in
improper application download, or the flash memory becoming damaged.
WARNING
The A80 AC power connection can only support an approved 5V, 1A power
supply. Using a third-party power supply and/or a power supply with incorrect
voltage and amperage could damage the device and void its warranty.

3.3 Terminal Identification
This section provides information on terminal identification numbers and where to locate them. For an in-
depth breakdown of terminal serial numbers and part numbers, please see “Appendix A: Part Number
and Serial Number Keys” on page 57.
3 .3.1 SERIAL NUMBER LOCATION
The A80 serial number is located on a sticker on the back of the device. Additionally, the same sticker
appears on the outside of the terminal box.
3 .3.2 REVISION NUMBER LOCATION
The A80 revision number, when applicable, is located on a sticker on the back of the device. Additionally,
the same sticker appears on the outside of the terminal box.
3 .3.3 PART NUMBER LOCATION
The A80 part number is located on a sticker on the back of the device. Additionally, the same sticker
appears on the outside of the terminal box.

3.4 A80 Warranty
All PAX terminals include a standard two-year warranty from date of purchase. For a list of associated
device RMA fees and other FAQs, please see the PAX RMA Portal.
WARNING
The warranty period for terminals and associated equipment is 2-years from
date PAX sold the terminal to the distributor, not the current terminal owner’s
date of purchase from the distributor.

3.5 Camera/Scanner
The A80 comes with a 0.3MP camera capable of scanning bar codes and QR codes.

paper diameter of 50mm.

3 .6.2 PRINTER ROLL INSTALLATION
1. Pull the paper latch toward the front of the device to open the hatch.
2. Install paper roll; ensure that the paper is coming out from the top of the roll
before closing the hatch.

3.7 SIM, SAM, and/or SD Card
The A80 supports the following card types and sizes:
3 .7.1 SIM/SAM, AND SD CARD SIZING
While PAX devices support a range of SIM card sizes, the maximum SAM card size supported in all devices
is the Mini SIM size and the maximum SD card size supported in all PAX devices is the Micro SD card.
3 .7.1.1 SIM/SAM Card Sizes
SIM/SAM Cards come in the following sizes:
• Standard SIM (1FF): (85.6mm × 53.98mm × 0.76 mm)
• Mini SIM (2FF): (25mm x 15mm x 0.76mm)
• Micro SIM (3FF): (15mm x 12mm x 0.76mm)
• Nano SIM (4FF): (12.3mm × 8.8mm × 0.67mm)

3 .7.2 SAM, AND SD CARD SLOT LOCATION
The SAM and Micro SD card slots are located at the back of the device.
3 .7.3 SAM, AND SD CARD INSTALLATION
1. Slide the back cover down to remove it
from the terminal.
2. Insert the SAM and/or SD card into the slot
with contacts facing down and the clipped
corner of the card facing the upper right.

3.8 Card Readers
This section describes the following card readers available on the A80:
• Magnetic Stripe Reader (MSR)
• EMV Card Reader
• NFC (Near Field Communication)/Contactless Card Reader
3 .8.1 MAGNETIC STRIPE READER
The Magnetic Stripe Reader (MSR) is located on the right side of the device. The reader includes triple
track reading and bidirectional reading.
To use the MSR, swipe the card from either left to right or right to left with the magnetic stripe facing
away from the front of the terminal.

3 .8.2 EMV CARD READER
The A80 includes an EMV card reader at the bottom of the device.
To use the EMV card reader, insert the card fully into the reader with the metallic contacts facing up and
towards the device. Make sure that the card is fully inserted into the card reader while reading the card.
