1 Introduction
Thank you for choosing to purchase a heating mantle of the HMA series from PCE Instruments.
The heating mantles of the PCE-HMA series are handmade. You have a heating mantle made of
“crocheted” glass silk. The PCE-HMA series is exclusively intended for heating liquids in round-
bottomed flasks made of glass.
The heat conductor ismade of the NiCr alloy 8020. The conductor is covered by a fibreglass hose
and crocheted into the inner sheath of the heating mantle with a yarn made of glass silk to ensure
that the heat is conducted evenly to the glass flask. The fibreglass hose and theglass yarn provide
further insulation. To ensure proper insulation of the outer sheath, the heating mantle is insulated
from inside with glass wool.
The heating mantles meet these standards:
DIN EN 61010-1: 2011-07 Part 1
DIN EN 61010-2-010: 2015-05
The heating mantles are available in 13 different sizes from 25 ml to 20 l.
The sizes from 25 ml to 250 ml have a closed outer sheath without a bottom hole.
The sizes from 500 ml have a bottom hole with a diameter of 60 mm.
The sizes from 25 ml to 100 ml are supplied with 4 split pins as standard.
The sizes from 250 ml come with 4 fastening hooks, enabling use with a tripod.
The power supply required for operation of the heating mantles is 230 V, 50/60 Hz. The heating
conductor temperature must not exceed of 450 ° C.
The heating mantles are supplied with a safety plug incl. a 1.50 m fixed cable.
All heating mantles are baked out prior to delivery. Discolouration of the glass cloth can occur due
to technical reasons and does not mean that the quality is bad.
In some cases, during first use, a technically induced smoke formation can occur, which is due to
the sizing agent being baked out. If this happens, do not prevent the smoke discharge with a
hermetic cover.
The heating mantles have protection class I, and correspond to IP 00.
All models are supplied with an external RCCB protection switch.

Intended use
The intended use of our heating mantles is heating non-explosive and non-flammable liquids in a
glass flask in the laboratory and in technical applications. The size of the flexible heater must
correspond to the size of the glass flask.
The operation of our heating mantles is exclusively permitted if the included RCCB
protection switch is used!
In addition to the safety instructions listed in this manual, you also need to observe the general
safety and accident prevention regulations.

Mains connection of the heating mantle
The heating mantle with a RCCB protection switch must only be
connected to a 230 V socket with a protective earth terminal. This socket
must be near the heating mantle and easily accessible.
The heating mantle must only be connected to the mains if it is in a
technically flawless condition. The heating mantle must not have any
damage, in particular, no exposed heat conductors and it must not be
damp or wet.
The heating mantle may only be connected with the supplied RCCB protection switch.
Please note the steps listed below when connecting the heating mantle:
- Turn off the heating mantle
- Plug the RCCB protection switch into the socket
- Insert the power plug of the heating mantle in the RCCB protection switch.
- Turn on the heating mantle
- Check the RCCB protection switch
To check the RCCB protection switch, thoroughly follow the instructions of its separate manual.
We recommend to use an additional power controller. If an external power controller or an
external temperature control unit are used, observe the following steps:
- Turn off the heating mantle
- Turn off the external power controller or external temperature control unit
- Plug the RCCB protection switch into the socket
- Insert the power plug of the heating mantle into the external power controller or the
temperature control unit
- Insert the power plug of the external power controller or temperature control unit into
the RCCB protection switch
- Turn on the heating mantle and external power controller or temperature control unit
- Check the RCCB protection switch

4 Operation The heating mantle may only be operated with the supplied RCCB
protection switch! We also recommend using the optional power
controller (temperature controller) to avoid overheating of the
heating mantles.
Before each use of the heating mantle, check the RCCB protection switch.
Follow the instructions from the separate manual!
If the test fails or if the RCCB protectionswitch is triggered during the usage of the heating mantle,
this indicates a defect in the heating mantle, which means that it must not be used anymore. The
plug of the heating mantle must be removed off the mains immediately and the heating mantle
must be checked by a qualified electrician.
The heating mantles may only be used for heating liquids in glass flasks. Neither flammable or
explosive liquids may be heated, nor those that, when heated, can produce hazardous flammable
or explosive mixtures.
The dimensions of the round-bottomed flask must correspond to the data of the heating mantle.
The signs and instructions attached to the heating mantle and the power cord must not be
removed.
The heating mantle may not be left unattended during operation.
If no optional power controller is operated with the heating mantle, the temperature can be
reduced as follows:
Models with capacities of 250 ml …20 l (2 heating zones)
Models with capacities of 25 …100 ml (1 heating zone)
Position Heating zone 2 Heating zone 1
3 100 % 100 %
2 off 100 %
1 25 % 25 %
0 off off
In case of continuous operation of the heating mantle, an external power controller or an external
temperature control unit must be connected as otherwise the maximum permissible temperature
can be exceeded.
If the heating mantle becomes wet as a result of glass breakage or spills of liquids, it must be
ensured that the heating mantle is not touched. The heating mantle must be disconnected from
the mains.
Afterwards, the heating mantle must be dried at a maximum temperature of 60 °C in a drying
cabinet for at least 5 hours.
No round-bottomed flasks made of metal or plastic must be heated in the heating mantle.

Danger of burns
The heatingmantles develop high temperatures and must not be touched
during use and when they are switched on. Both the inner part and the
upper edge of the heating mantle can cause burns. At the end of the
heating operation, the heating mantle must be disconnected from the
mains. It is recommended to let the heating mantle cool down for at least
30 minutes.
In order to achieve an optimum heating of the round-bottomedflask, the current liquid level should
always be checked, also during operation.
The liquid level in the glass flask must always be above the upper
heating conductor.
When the liquid level is decreasing, the heating zone should be
reduced. This means that in case of the mantles with a capacity of
250 ml …20 l, it is necessaryto switch from heating zone 2 to heating
zone 1 or to turn off the heating mantle. For the smaller heating
mantles with capacities between 25 ml and 100 ml, the heating mantle
must basically be turned off.
5 Maintenance
The examination of installations subject to monitoring is regulated by your local Industrial Safety
Ordinance. Please observe your local accident prevention regulations for testing electrical
installations and equipment.
Heating mantles must be checked before first use and every 6 months. Instructions and
specifications can be found in your local regulations.
It is also necessary to carry out a visual inspection and to check if sufficient protective measures
against electric shock are in place. A functional test is also required. The RCCB protection switch
must be included in this test.
Maintenance of the heating mantles must only be carried out by qualified electricians.
Heating mantles may only be repaired by the manufacturer to prevent serious injury or even death
by electric shock.

They must be given to collection points designed for that purpose.
In order to comply with the EU directive 2012/19/EU we take our devices back. We either re-use
them or give them to a recycling company which disposes of the devices in line with law.
For countries outside the EU, batteries and devices should be disposed of in accordance with
your local waste regulations.
