Follow these instructions and those published by the battery manufacturer, vehicle manufacturer
and manufacturer of any equipment you intend to use near the battery. Pay attention to all hazard
precautions on these products and on the engine before charging.
All safety messages that follow have WARNING level hazards. Failure to
comply could result in death or serious injury.
Battery Charger Safety
Use the Battery Charger for charging 12-volt regular, gel cell, deep-cycle and sealed lead-acid•
type batteries only. It is not intended to supply power to a low-voltage electrical system other than
in an automotive application. Do not use Battery Charger for charging dry-cell batteries that are
commonly used with home and portable appliances. These batteries may burst and cause injury
to persons and damage to property.
Perform all charging procedures in a safe, dry, well-ventilated area. Batteries produce explosive•
gases during charging.
Whether stored or in use, KEEPTHIS BATTERY CHARGER OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.•
Close supervision is necessary when used near children.
Use of an attachment not recommended or sold by the Battery Charger manufacturer may result• in
a risk of fire, electric shock or injury to persons.
To reduce risk of damage to electric plug and cord, pull by plug rather than cord when•
disconnecting Battery Charger.
Do not operate this Battery Charger in rain or snow, or immerse the unit in water or other liquid.•
Do not open the Battery Charger. There are no user-serviceable parts inside the unit.•

GASES EXPLOSIVOS — No use este producto en presencia de vapores o gases
inflamables. El trabajar cerca de una batería de plomo-ácido puede causar que la

cargando, ellas despiden gas de hidrógeno, el cual puede ser encendido por chispas

EXPLOSIVE GASES — Do not use this product in the presence of flammable fumes
or gases. Working in the vicinity of a lead-acid battery can cause an explosion of the
battery being charged. When lead-acid batteries are charging, they vent explosive
hydrogen gas which can be ignited by sparks from electrical connections. It is
important to read this manual before charging and follow the battery charging
instructions exactly each time you use this Battery Charger.
Do not smoke or use flammable items (matches, cigarette lighters, etc.) while working on a•
vehicle’s battery system.
Never charge a frozen battery, as it could explode.•
Do not expose battery to fire or intense heat, as it can explode.•
Before recycling or disposing of a battery, protect exposed terminals with heavy-duty electrical tape•
to prevent shorting (shorting can result in personal injury or fire).
Always wear protective eyewear when using this product. Contact with battery acid can cause•
blindness and/or severe chemical burns.
Follow these first aid procedures in case of accidental contact with battery acid.•
FIRST AID PROCEDURES
SKIN: Wash skin thoroughly if battery acid comes in contact with skin. Seek medical
attention immediately.
EYES: Flush eyes with cool water for at least ten minutes. Seek medical attention
immediately.
CONTACT POISON CONTROL CENTER IMMEDIATELY IF INGESTED.
Never touch charger clamps together or to a common piece of metal. Sparking, explosion or•
damage to the unit can result. Always store the charger clamps in the appropriate storage area on
the back of the unit after use.
Ensure the AC power cord is disconnected from AC power before connecting or disconnecting•
charger clamps.
Place this unit as far away from the battery being charged as the charging cables will permit.•
Never place Battery Charger directly above battery being charged; gases from battery will corrode•
and damage Battery Charger.
Never allow battery acid to drip on Battery Charger when testing or filling battery.•
Never set a battery on top of Battery Charger.•
When using the Battery Charger close to the vehicle’s battery and engine, place the unit on a flat,•
stable surface, and keep all clamps, cords, clothing and body parts away from moving parts of the
vehicle.
Follow these instructions and those published by the battery manufacturer and manufacturer of•
any equipment you intend to use near the battery. Pay attention to all hazard precautions on these
products and on the engine before charging.
This system is designed to be used only on vehicles with a 12-volt DC battery system. DO• NOT
connect to a 6-volt or 24-volt battery system.
A• n extension cord should not be used unless absolutely necessary. Use of an improper extension
cord could result in a risk of fire and electric shock. If extension cord must be used, make sure:
That pins on plug of extension cord are the same number, size and shape as those of plug– on Battery Charger.
That extension cord is properly wired and in good electrical condition.–
That wire size is AWG #18 (18 gauge) for up to 100 feet; AWG #16 (16 gauge) for– distances over 100 feet.
You connect the Battery Charger to the extension cord before plugging the extension cord– into a 110/120-volt AC power outlet.
Remove all jewelry or metal objects that could cause short circuits or react with battery acid. A•
lead-acid battery produces a short circuit current high enough to weld a ring or other similar
objects to metal, causing a severe burn.
When working on electrical equipment, always ensure someone is nearby to help you in an•
emergency.
Do not operate Battery Charger with damaged cord or plug – replace the cord or plug immediately.•
NEVER alter an AC cord or plug. If the plug will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed•
by a qualified electrician. Improper connection can result in a risk of electric shock. The Battery
Charger is for use on a nominal 120-volt AC circuit.
Do not operate Battery Charger if it has received a sharp blow, been dropped or otherwise•
damaged in any way; take it to a qualified serviceman.

To reduce risk of electric shock, unplug Battery Charger from outlet before attempting any•
maintenance or cleaning.
All messages that follow have NOTICE level hazards. Failure to comply could
result in property damage.
Keep clean, fresh water and soap nearby when working with batteries to clean skin, eyes and•
clothing which have contacted battery acid.
Keep a supply of baking soda on hand when working on batteries. Baking soda neutralizes lead-•
acid battery electrolyte.
INTRODUCTION
This Battery Charger has been carefully engineered and manufactured to give you dependable
operation. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating your new Battery Charger, as it
contains the information you need to become familiar with its features and obtain the performance
that will bring you continued enjoyment for many years. Please keep this manual on file for future
reference.
This model Battery Charger has a high charge rate of up to 12 amps, and low charge rate of up to 2
amps (12-volt only). It is intended for charging only 12-volt lead-acid batteries - maintenance-free and
conventional automotive, marine deep cycle - that are usually used in cars, trucks, farm equipment,
boats, RVs and SUVs, lawn mowers and garden tractors, motorcycles, personal watercraft,
snowmobiles, ATVs and various light commercial applications.

OPERACIÓN
Controles del Cargador de Baterías
Los controles del Cargador de Baterías están ubicados en el panel de control. Comprenda su uso
antes de operar el Cargador de Baterías.
Tablero de Control
Pantalla LED – La pantalla LED puede indicar el voltaje actual, la corriente de carga actual y la
capacidad actual de la batería, dependiendo del modo de pantalla seleccionado. También indicará
un código de falla si hay un problema con la batería o con el procedimiento de carga. Cuando
el Cargador de Baterías está enchufado a la energía CA pero no está conectado a la batería, la
pantalla indicara un “0” desplazándose en la pantalla.
Botón Selector de Tasa de Carga – Oprimiendo el botón selector de tasa de carga le permitirá
seleccionar una tasa de carga de 2-amp, 8-amp ó 12-amp. El ajuste predeterminado es de 2 amp.
Indicador de Carga de 2-amp – Cuando está encendido indica una tasa de carga de 2 amperios.
Indicador de Carga de 8-amp – Cuando está encendido indica una tasa de carga de 8 amperios.
Indicador de Carga de 12-amp – Cuando está encendido indica una tasa de carga de 12 amperios.
Botón de Modo de Pantalla – Al oprimir el botón de modo de pantalla le permitirá seleccionar entre
corriente, voltaje o porcentaje de capacidad de la batería para que aparezca en la pantalla LED. El
ajuste predeterminado es la tasa de carga actual.
Indicador de Modo de Capacidad de la Batería – Cuando esta encendido indica que el modo de
porcentaje de capacidad de la batería ha sido seleccionado y será mostrado en la pantalla LED. La
amplitud de capacidad de la batería es “LO”, 60% a 90%, y “FUL”. Cuando la carga está completa,
“FUL” aparecerá en la pantalla LED si el modo de capacidad de la batería fue usado al cargar la

OPERATION
Battery Charger Controls
Battery Charger controls are located on the control panel. Understand their use before operating
Battery Charger.
Control Panel
LED Display – The LED display can indicate present voltage, present charging current and present
battery capacity, depending upon which display mode is selected. It will also indicate a fault code if
there is a problem with the battery or the charging procedure. When the Battery Charger is plugged
into AC power but not connected to the battery, the display will show a scrolling “0.”
Charge Rate Selector Button – Pushing the charge rate selector button will allow you to select from
a 2-amp, 8-amp or 12-amp charge rate. The default setting is 2 amps.
2-amp Charge Indicator – When lit it indicates the charge rate is 2 amps.
8-amp Charge Indicator – When lit it indicates the charge rate is 8 amps.
12-amp Charge Indicator – When lit it indicates the charge rate is 12 amps.
Display Mode Button – Pushing the display mode button will allow you to select between current,
voltage or battery capacity percentage to be shown on the LED display. The default setting is the
current charging rate.
Battery Capacity Mode Indicator – When lit it indicates that the battery capacity percentage mode
has been selected and it will be shown on the LED display. The battery capacity range is “LO”, 60%
to 90%, and “FUL”. When charging is complete, “FUL” will show on the LED display if the battery
capacity mode was used when charging the battery.

Voltage Mode Indicator – When lit it indicates that the present battery voltage mode has been
selected and it will be shown on the LED display.
Current Mode Indicator – When lit it indicates that the present battery current mode has been
selected and it will be shown on the LED display.
Reverse Polarity Indicator – The red LED will light when the Battery Charger is not properly
connected to the battery. When lit it will not allow the Battery Charger to begin charging.
Battery Reconditioning Indicator – The yellow LED will flash on and off when the Battery Charger
is in the reconditioning mode. The Battery Charger will automatically determine whether the battery
needs to go through the reconditioning mode before charging.
Charge Status Indicator – The green LED will flash when the battery is charged at a constant
voltage or current. When the Battery Charger goes into float mode, power to the battery will be
stopped for 1 minute to check the charging state of the battery. During this time the green LED will
stay lit. When the battery is fully charged the green LED will stay lit.
EXPLOSION HAZARD
If the green charge status indicator turns off and a red LED comes on, immediately disconnect
the charger clamps from the battery terminals.
Before Charging
Make sure the Battery Charger is disconnected from the power supply.•
Make sure that the voltage of the battery matches the rated output of the Battery Charger by•
referring to the vehicle owner’s manual.
Check the polarities of the battery terminals: positive for the (+) symbol and negative for the (–)•
symbol.
If it is necessary to remove battery from vehicle to charge, or to clean terminals, always remove•
grounded terminal from battery first. Make sure all accessories in the vehicle are turned off to
prevent arcing.
Clean battery terminals. Be careful to keep corrosion from coming in contact with eyes or skin.•
For batteries with removable vent caps, add distilled water in each cell until battery acid reaches•
level specified by battery manufacturer. This helps purge excessive gas from cells. Do not overfill.
For a battery without cell caps, carefully follow manufacturer’s recharging instructions.
Study all battery manufacturers’ specific precautions such as removing or not removing cell caps•
while charging and recommended rates of charge.
Charge battery initially at the 2-amp (lowest) rate.•
Refer to the charging times chart on page 8 before charging battery.•
For batteries with amp hour ratings, use the chart below to determine the recommended charge rate
for your battery.

Pre-Charge Activation
When starting to charge a battery, the current will depend on the battery’s percent of charge.
The actual current will usually be lower than the current selected, unless the battery is severely
discharged. As the battery charge level increases, the current reduces. The LED display is intended
to show how the charging process is proceeding; it should not be used to determine the level of
battery charge - this should be done using a hydrometer or a voltmeter. Typically 12.6V DC is
considered full charge for a 12-volt battery if the voltage is measured one hour after the Battery
Charger is disconnected. During charging, a nominal 12-volt battery can be 13.6 volts or somewhat
higher, so it needs to rest after charging to measure actual state of charge.
EXPLOSION HAZARD
Be aware that a fully charged battery will also cause a low current reading. Attempting pre-
charge activation of a fully charged battery may cause explosion - make sure that battery is
discharged before using this procedure.
Pre-charge activation is the term for the time it takes before a battery begins to
accept a measurable rate of charge - it can be as long as 4-8 hours from the time the charging
process begins. Pre-charge activation is indicated if the ammeter reading is zero and a
hydrometer or voltmeter reading shows that the battery is fully discharged.

The newer, high-calcium-type 12-volt DC batteries may need pre-charge activation if
their charge has been allowed to drop to a very low level. When deeply discharged, this type
of battery will provide only a very low voltage output and will draw less than 1 amp during the
recharging process, until activated.
Charging if Battery is Installed in a Vehicle
Check polarity of battery terminals: For top-mounted battery connectors, the positive (+) terminal1. usually has a larger diameter than the negative (–) battery terminal. For side-mounted battery
connections, the positive (+) terminal is red, the negative (–) terminal is black.
Attach charger clamps to battery connections, as follows, ensuring a good connection when the2. Battery Charger is plugged in (if there is a mistake, the reverse polarity indicator will light):
When connecting charger clamps to a battery, rock the clamps back and forth on the
terminal to ensure a secure connection.
Negative-Grounded Vehicle: Connect the positive (RED) charger clamp to the positive (+)
ungrounded battery terminal. Then, connect the negative (BLACK) charger clamp to the vehicle
chassis, or the engine block (away from the battery).
Do not connect the charger clamp to the carburetor, fuel lines or sheet metal body parts; connect only
to a heavy gauge metal part of the frame or engine block.
Negative-grounded type systems are the most common in today’s vehicles.
Positive-Grounded Vehicle: Connect the negative (BLACK) charger clamp to the negative (–)
ungrounded battery terminal. Then, connect the positive (RED) charger clamp to the vehicle chassis
or engine part (away from the battery). Do not connect the charger clamp to the carburetor, fuel lines
or sheet metal body parts; connect only to a heavy gauge, stable metal part of the frame or engine

A marine (boat) battery must be removed and charged on shore. To charge it on
board requires equipment specially designed for marine use.
Check polarity of battery terminals: For top-mounted battery connectors, the positive (1. +) terminal
usually has a larger diameter than the negative (–) battery terminal. For side-mounted battery
connections, the positive (+) terminal is red, the negative (–) terminal is black.
Attach a 24-inch (minimum length) 6 AWG insulated battery cable to the negative (–) battery2. terminal.
Connect the positive (RED) charger clamp to the positive (+) battery terminal.3. Stand as far back from battery as possible, and do not face battery when making final4. connection.
Position yourself and free end of cables as far away from battery as possible. Carefully connect5. the negative (BLACK) charger clamp to the free end of the battery cable connected to the
negative terminal.
Connect the Battery Charger’s power cord to a 110/120-volt AC power outlet.6. If the Battery Charger is connected correctly the reverse polarity indicator will not be lit. If the7. cables are connected incorrectly the reverse polarity LED will be red. Disconnect the Battery
Charger and check your connections.

Charging Times
The PKC0CT is a fully automatic battery charger. It automatically adjusts the charge rate as the
battery becomes charged and stops charging when the battery is fully charged. If you require some
estimate of the time it takes to charge a battery, refer to the chart below for approximate charge times.

The times shown in the chart above are approximate and refer to an average automotive battery. For
smaller batteries, the charge time should be adjusted using the formula shown below and adding 1
hour to the time calculated.
To estimate charging time for a discharged battery, divide the AH rating of the battery by the charge
rate selected. This is the number of hours required to recharge the battery. For example, a 50 AH
(12-volt) battery is discharged to 10 volts. How long should it be charged at the 12-amp rate? Divide
the 50 AH by 12 AH. The answer is approximately 4 hours. Always round up the charge time by
25% to ensure full charge. In most cases, battery recharge times will vary depending on the age and
condition of the battery. Smaller batteries should be charged at the lower rate (2 amps) and add an
extra hour to charge time.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Cleaning
After each use, clean the charger clamps - be sure to remove any battery fluid that will cause•
corrosion of the clamps.
Clean the outside case of the Battery Charger with a soft cloth and, if necessary, mild soap•
solution.
Adding Water to the Battery
BURN HAZARD
Always wear protective eyewear when adding water to the battery. Contact with battery acid
can cause blindness and/or severe chemical burns.
Do not add water to a maintenance-free battery.
Once the battery is fully charged, check the electrolyte level of the battery. If the level is below the
specified level, add clean distilled water only. Never add acid or tap water.
Storage
Store the Battery Charger at room temperature. Make sure the charger clamps are stored in the•
storage area on the back of the unit after use.
Keep the Battery Charger cords loosely coiled during storage to prevent damage to the cords. Do•
not use the Battery Charger if cords or clamps have been damaged in any way.
Due to inherent self-discharge, lead-acid batteries should be charged at least every
4 months, especially in a warm environment. Leaving a battery in a discharged state, or if not
recharged every 4 months, may result in permanent battery damage and poor performance.
Disposal
The Battery Charger is designed to provide years of service. However, when the Battery Charger
reaches the end of its service life, it should be disposed of properly.
Examples of places that will accept items like this are: county or municipal recycling
drop-off centers, scrap metal dealers and retailers who sell automotive replacement
lead-acid starter batteries.

or will not charge
Make sure that the Battery Charger is powered by a “live”
110/120-volt grounded AC outlet.
Unplug Battery Charger and check battery connections
to ensure that there is a good connection with the battery
terminal and/or vehicle chassis.
Check that the correct charge rate has been selected for
the battery being charged.
Ensure that enough charging time has been allowed for -
check table on page 8 for approximate charging times.
See PRE-CHARGE ACTIVATION.
Make sure battery has at least 4-5 volts.
Check to be sure that the battery is not sulfated.
Battery slow to
charge
Very cold battery Charge rate will increase as battery warms above
32°F (0°C).
No or very low
voltage reading
Battery may be sulfated Sulfated batteries cannot accept a high rate of charge.
Take battery to a service station or battery distributor for
professional evaluation and/or service.
Fault Codes
The Battery Charger will display fault codes on the LED display when an error occurs. This will help
you to troubleshoot the problem. Refer to the chart below for a list of the fault codes.

warranties, expressed or implied, beyond those warranties specified above. Manufacturer excludes
any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.
