IMPORTANT PUMP WARNING AND SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
When installing and using this electrical equipment, basic safety
precautions should always be followed, include the following:
RISK OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK. Connect only to
a branch circuit protected by a ground-fault circuit-
interrupter (GFCI). Contact a qualified electrician if you cannot verify
that the circuit is protected by a GFCI.
This unit must be connected only to a supply circuit
that is protected by a ground-fault circuit-interrupter
(GFCI). Such a GFCI should be provided by the installer and should
be tested on a routine basis. To test the GFCI, push the test button.
The GFCI should interrupt power. Push the reset button. Power should
be restored. If the GFCI fails to operate in this manner, the GFCI is
defective. If the GFCI interrupts power to the pump without the test button
being pushed, a ground current is flowing, indicating the possibility of an
electric shock. Do not use this pump. Disconnect the pump and have the
problem corrected by a qualified service representative before using.
General Warnings
• Never open the inside of the drive motor enclosure.There is a
capacitor bank that holds a 230 VAC charge even when there is no
power to the unit.
• Thepumpisnotsubmersible.
• Thepumpiscapableofhighowrates;usecautionwheninstalling
and programming to limit pumps performance potential with old or
questionable equipment.
• Code requirements for the electrical connection differ from state
tostate.InstallequipmentinaccordancewiththecurrentNational
Electrical Code and all applicable local codes and ordinances.
• Before servicing the pump; switch OFF power to the pump by
disconnecting the main circuit to the pump.
• This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including
children) of reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or
lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given
supervision or instruction concerning the use of the appliance by a
person responsible for their safety.

IMPORTANT PUMP WARNING AND SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Beforeservicingequipment, makenoteofthe lterpressure.Be sure
that all controls are set to ensure the system cannot inadvertently start
during service. Turn off all power to the pump. IMPORTANT: Place filter
manual air relief valve in the open position and wait for all pressure
in the system to be relieved.
Beforestartingthesystem,fullyopenthemanualairreliefvalveandplace
all system valves in the “open” position to allow water to flow freely from the
tank and back to the tank. Stand clear of all equipment and start the pump.
IMPORTANT: Do not close filter manual air relief valve until all
pressure has been discharged from the valve and a steady stream
of water appears. Observelterpressuregaugeandbesureitisnot
higher than the pre-service condition.
HAZARDOUS PRESSURE: STAND CLEAR OF
PUMP AND FILTER DURING START UP
Circulation systems operate under high pressure.
When any part of the circulating system (i.e.
locking ring, pump, filter, valves, etc.) is serviced,
air can enter the system and become pressurized.

General Installation Information
• All work must be performed by a qualified service professional, and
must conform to all national, state, and local codes.
• Install to provide drainage of compartment for electrical components.
• These instructions contain information for a variety of pump models
and therefore some instructions may not apply to a specific model. All
models are intended for use in aquaculture applications. The pump will
function correctly only if it is properly sized to the specific application
and properly installed.
Pumps improperly sized or installed or used in
applications other than for which the pump was
intended can result in severe personal injury or death. These risks may
include but not be limited to electric shock, fire, flooding, suction
entrapment or severe injury or property damage caused by a structural
failure of the pump or other system component.
The pump can produce high levels of suction within
the suction side of the plumbing system. These high
levels of suction can pose a risk if a person comes within the close
proximity of the suction openings. A person can be seriously injured by
this high level of vacuum or may become trapped and drown. It is
absolutely critical that the suction plumbing be installed in accordance
with the latest national and local codes for aquaculture systems.
A clearly labeled emergency shut-off switch for the
pump must be in an easily accessible, obvious place.
Makesureusersknowwhereitisandhowtouseitincaseofemergency.
NOTE: ALL SUCTION PLUMBING MUST BE INSTALLED IN
ACCORDANCE WITH THE LATEST NATIONAL AND LOCAL CODES,
STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES.
This pump has been evaluated for use with water
only.
Beforeoperation,besuretocompletelyrinsethe
pump volute with water.
Cord Connected Models Only

supplied with a grounding conductor and grounding
type attachment plug. To reduce the risk of electric shock, be certain

the fixed wiring in accordance with the wiring rules.

Be sure the pump location meets the following
requirements:
Fittings

thefrontofthepump(e.g.3”pipe=15in).
2. Donotinstall90°elbowsdirectlyintopumpinlet.
Piping
1. Be sure all plumbing connections are clean and tight
to avoid possible air leaks and entrainment of air on
the suction side of the pump.
2. Gas supersaturation conditions resulting from air
entrainment can be harmful to aquatic animal health.
3. Uselargerpipesizesforimprovedplumbing.Pipe
diameter should be the same or larger as the return
line diameter.
4. Plumbing on the suction side of the pump should be
as short as possible.
5. Install piping as close to the water level as possible.
6. Runstraight,horizontalpipingforthesuctionsideof
the pump. The length of the piping should be equal
tove(5)pipediameters.
Example: If system is plumbed with 3 in. diameter
PVC pipe, than a straight section of pipe 15 in. long
should be used for suction side of the pump.
Valves
1. Install gate valves on suction and discharge pipes for
maintenanceofoodedsuctionsystems-installno
closerthanve(5)timesthesuctionpipediameter.
2. Useacheckvalveinthedischargelinewhenusing
this pump for any application where there is significant
height to the plumbing after the pump.
3. Be sure to install check valves when plumbing in
parallel with another pump. This helps prevent reverse
rotation of the impeller and motor.
• Pump inlet as close as possible to water level.
• Short,directsuctionpipingreturns(reducesfriction
loss).
• Installpumpinasheltered,wellventilatedareato
protect from excess moisture (i.e., rain, splashing
water,etc.)andooding.
• Install and secure pump on level concrete slab or
rmsurface(reducesvibrationnoise).
• Pump location should allow access for servicing and
maintenance.
Before operation, be sure to completely rinse
the pump volute with water.

Electrical Wiring Installation
To connect the Sparus™PumpwithConstantFlowTechnologytoanACpowersource(fornoncord
connectedpumps):
1. Besureallelectricalbreakersandswitchesareturned
off before wiring motor.
2. Be sure that the supply line voltage matches the
motor voltage listed on the motor plate. If they do
notmatch,permanentmotordamagemayoccur.
3. Use #12 AWG for wire runs up to 100 feet (30.5
meters)and#10AWGforlengthslongerthan100
feet (30.5 meters).When in doubt, use a heavier
gauge(largerdiameter)wire.
4. Usestrainreliefandbesureallelectricalconnections
are clean and tight.
5. Cutthewirestotheappropriatelengthsotheydo
not overlap or touch when connected.
6. Permanentlygroundthemotorusingthegroundwire,
asshownbelow.Usethecorrectwiresizeandtype
specied by National Electrical Code. Make sure
the ground wire is connected to an electrical service
ground.
7. Bondthemotortothestructureinaccordancewith
theNationalElectricalCode.ULrequiresuseofa
solidcopperbondingconductornotsmallerthan8
AWG.Runawirefromtheexternalbondingscrew
or lug to the bonding structure.
8. Connectthewirefromtheaccessiblewireconnector
on the motor to all metal parts of the structure and
toallelectricalequipment,metalconduit,andmetal
pipingwithin5feet(1.5m)oftheinsidewallsofthe
structure.ForCanada,a6AWGorlargersolidcopper
bonding conductor is required.
9. Thepumpshouldbepermanentlyconnectedtoeither
acircuitbreaker,2-poletimeror2-polerelay.IfAC
powerissuppliedbyaGFCIcircuitbreaker,usea
dedicated circuit breaker that has no other
electrical loads.
Note:Whenthepumpisstartedandstoppedby
removingpowerwitharelayortimer,atwo-pole
device should be used to apply and remove
powertobothPOWERLINETERMINALS.

pump,althoughitcanoperateonstablevoltagefrom
207Vto253V.Itisimportanttoensurethatperiodic
line voltage fluctuations do not expose the pump to
voltages outside its allowable range. The pump’s
drive electronics may have reduced length of
service life if the pump is consistently operated at
or near the extreme ends of its allowable voltage
range (+/-).
Note: Allwiringshouldbeperformedbyaqualied
electrician.Itistheresponsibilityoftheinstaller/
electrician to perform the installation in compliance
withtheNationalElectricCodeandallState,local
codes and ordinances. It is the responsibility of the
installer to perform the installation in such a manner
thatthepumpisprovidedwith230volt(+/-10%),
singlephase,ACpower,50Hzor60Hz.
Insomeeldinstallations(particularlycommercial
properties)directaccesstosingle-phasepower
may not be available. In an application where only
three-phasepowerisavailable,itispossiblefor
qualified installers to follow standard electrical wiring
procedures that will allow the pumps to be installed
and operated.
Three-phasepowermaybesourcedfromathree-
phaseelectricalpanelandconnectedtoatwo-
pole circuit breaker; thereby creating single phase
powerasrequiredbythepump.Onlysingle-phase
electrical power may be terminated into the field
wiringcompartmentjunctionboxlocatedonthe
side of the pump.
When installing a pump always safely use
a multi-meter to measure the actual voltage
across the two live conductors to verify that
it is 230 volt (+/-10%), single-phase, AC power,
50Hz or 60Hz.
ThePentairAquaticEco-Systems™Sparus™Pump with Constant Flow Technology is designed to operate on
230volt(+/-10%),single-phase,ACpower,50Hzor60Hz.

OPERATING THE PUMP
Follow the steps below to prime the pump for start up:
1. PressStart/Stop tostopthepump.Disconnectthe
pump main power supply and communication cable.
2. Closeallgatevalvesinsuctionanddischarge 
 pipes.Relieveallpressurefromthesystem.
3. Removethepumplidandlockingring.
4. Fillthepumpstrainerpotwithwater.
5. Reassemblethepumplidandlockingringontothe
strainer basket. The pump is now ready to prime.
6. Openthelterairreliefvalveandstandclearof 
 thelter.(Ifpresent.)
7. Connectpowertothepump.Besuregreenpower
light is on.
8. PressStart/Stop to start the pump. The pump will
 enterintoprimingmode(ifenabled)andspeedup
to the maximum speed set in the pump menu
settings.
9. Whenwatercomesoutofthelterairreliefvalve,
close the valve. The system should now be free of
air and recirculating water to and from the tank.
10. Do not allow your pump to run longer than 30
minutes time without developing full flow. If the
pumpdoesnotprime,checkyourprimingsettings
on the control panel or see the “Troubleshooting”
sectiononpages21-22.
Priming Features
ThedefaultprimingsettingisENABLED.
The pump also allows you to set the following from
the operator control panel:
• Maximumprimingtime
• MaximumandMinimumspeed
• Primingsensitivity(1-100%)
• Priming delay
Set up instructions on page 14.
Priming the Pump
Prime the pump before starting the pump for the first
time.Removethelidandllthebasketwithwater.The
pump basket must be filled with water before initial
start up or after servicing.
This Sparus™Pump with Constant Flow Technology is shipped with Priming mode ENABLED. Unless the Priming settings are
changed in the menu, be aware that the pump will speed up to the maximum speed when the pump is powered on for the
first time, and the start/stop button is pressed. To change the maximum speed of the pump, refer to page 10.
Before turning the pump ON, be sure the following conditions are met:
1. Open filter air relief valve (if present).
2. Open valves.
3. Return is completely open and clear of any blockages.
4. Water in the pump basket.
5. Stand clear of the filter or other pressurized vessels.
Before operation, be sure to completely fill the pump volute with water.
DO NOT run the pump dry. If the pump is run dry, the mechanical seal will be damaged and the pump will start leaking. If this
occurs, the damaged seal must be replaced. ALWAYS maintain proper water level. If the water level falls below the suction port,
the pump will draw air through the suction port, losing the prime and causing the pump to run dry, resulting in a damaged seal.
Continued operation in this manner could cause a loss of pressure, resulting in damage to the pump case, impeller and seal and
may cause property damage and personal injury.

Stopping the Pump
1. PressStart/Stop to stop the pump.
When servicing equipment, disconnect the communi-
cationcable,andswitchOFFcircuitbreakertoremove
power from the pump.
Note: The pump can automatically restart if the
communication cable is connected.
Operating the Pump at Preset Speeds
Thepumpisprogrammedwithfourdefaultspeedsof40,
50,60and70GPM.Speedbuttons1-4areforeachof
the preset speeds.
1. Be sure the pump is powered on and the green
powerLEDison.
2. PresstheSpeedbutton(1-4)correspondingtothe
desiredpresetspeedandreleasequickly.TheLED
above the button will turn on.
3. PressStart/Stop. The pump will quickly change to
the selected preset speed.

The pump can be programmed in three different modes:
Manual, Schedule, and Egg Timer.
Speeds 1-4 can be programmed in all three modes.
Speeds 5-8 can only be programmed in Schedule mode
since there are no buttons on the control panel for Speeds

Password Protection
The default setting for password protection is disabled.
When this feature is enabled, the pump display will
prompt for the password before allowing access to the
control panel and buttons.
The entered password is any combination of four (4)
digits.
• Password protection can always be turned off by
pressing Start/Stop.
• Password protection cannot be turned back on with
Start/Stop while running in manual mode.
• Pressing Start/Stop when the pump is off will return
it back to the Running Cycles Mode and run at
the next scheduled run time. If the present time is
withinthescheduledruntime,thepumpwillrunthe
scheduled speed.
• Allfunctionsincludingprogrammingaredisabledin
PasswordProtectionMode.
• Screenwillread“EnterPassword”ifanybuttonother

vacuuming,cleaning,addingchemicals,after a storm
for extra skimming capability.

Start/Stoptostart.WhentheQuickCleancycleisover,
the pump will resume regular schedules and be in
“RunningSchedule”mode.
To access the Quick Clean menu:
1. CheckthatthegreenpowerLEDison.

Time Out
This feature can be used to allow newly glued pipe
joints time to dry before circulation of water resumes.
The Time Out feature keeps the pump from running its
programmed speeds.
OnceTimeOutisnished,thepumpwillbein
“RunningSchedule”mode,theStart/StopLEDwillbe
lit and ready to turn on at the next scheduled run time.
To access the Time Out menu:
1. CheckthatthegreenpowerLEDison.
2. PressMenu.
3. Use Up or Down arrows to scroll to “Features”,
then press Select.
5. PressSelect tochoose“Timeout”.
6. Then press Select again to choose “Timeout
Duration”.
7. PressSelect to change the time. The cursor will
highlight the minutes column.
8. PresstheLeft arrow to move cursor to the hours
column. Timeoutcanbesetfrom1minuteto10
hours.
9. PressEnter to save the setting.
Note:To cancel any changes,press Escape to

ThedefaultsettingforPrimingisENABLED.Thissetting
allows the pump to automatically detect if it is primed for
startup.
The priming feature ramps the pump to 1800 RPM and
pauses for three (3) seconds. If there is sufcient water
owinthepumpbasket,thepumpwillgooutofpriming
mode and run its commanded speed.
Ifthewaterowisnotsufcient,thepumpwillramptothe
“MaxSpeed”settingandremainfortheprimingdelaytime
(default20seconds).Ifthereissufcientwaterowinthe
pumpbasketatthistime,itwillgooutofprimingmodeand
ramp to the commanded speed.
Ifthereisstillinsufcientowinthepumpbasket,thepump
willtrytoprimeatthe“MaximumSpeed”fortheamountof
timesetupinthe“MaximumPrimingTime”menu.

MAINTENANCE
Cleaning the Pump Strainer Basket
1. Turnoffthepumpatthecircuitbreaker.
2. Relievepressureinthesystem.
3. Turnthelidandclampcounter-clockwiseandremove
from the pump.
4. Removedebrisand rinseoutthe basket.Replace
the basket if it is cracked.
5. Putthebasketbackintothehousing. Be sure to align
the notch in the bottom of the basket with the rib in
the bottom of the volute.
6. Fillthepumppotandvoluteuptotheinletportwith
water.
7. Cleanthelidandclamp,O-ring,andsealingsurface
of the pump pot.
Note:ItisimportanttokeepthelidO-ringcleanand
well lubricated.
8. Reinstallthelidbyplacingtheclampandlidonthe
pot.BesurethelidO-ringisproperlyplaced.
Seat the clamp and lid on the pump then turn clockwise
untilthelockingringhandlesarehorizontal.
9. Turnthepower“ON”atthecircuitbreaker.
10. Openthemanualairreliefvalveonthetopofthe
filter. Stand clear of the filter.
11. Waituntilallpressureisrelieved.Startthepump.
12. Bleedairfromthelteruntilasteadystreamof
water comes out of the filter air relief valve. Close
the manual air relief valve.
Pump Strainer Basket
Thestrainerbasket(or‘strainerpot’),islocatedinfront
of the Sparus™Pump with Constant Flow Technology
housing. The strainer basket must be kept clean and
free of debris. Inspect basket through the lid on the top
of the housing.
Besuretovisuallyinspectthestrainerbasketevery1to
4weeks.Dirtystrainerbasketsreducelterandheater
efficiency and put abnormal stress on the pump motor.
Bacterial fouling could cause the lid to not be clear.
DO NOT open the strainer pot if pump fails to prime or if pump has been operating without water in the strainer pot. Pumps operated
in these circumstances may experience a build up of vapor pressure and may contain scalding hot water. Opening the pump may
cause serious personal injury. In order to avoid the possibility of personal injury, make sure the suction and discharge valves are
open and strainer pot temperature is cool to touch, then open with extreme caution.
To prevent damage to the pump and for proper operation of the system, clean pump strainer and skimmer baskets regularly.
Winterizing
• Inmildclimateareas,whentemporaryfreezing

allnighttopreventfreezing.
• Youareresponsiblefordeterminingwhenfreezing
conditionsmayoccur.Iffreezingconditionsare
expected,takethefollowingstepstoreducethe
riskoffreezedamage.Freezedamageisnot
covered under warranty.
1. Shutoffelectricalpowerforthepumpatthecircuit
breaker.
2. Drainthewateroutofthepumphousingbyremoving
the two thumb-twist drain plugs from the housing.
Store the plugs in the pump basket.
3. Coverthemotortoprotectitfromsevererain,snow
and ice.
Note: Donotwrapmotorwithplasticorotherair
tight materials during winter storage. The motor
maybecoveredduringastorm,winterstorage,etc.,
but never when operating or expecting operation.
THIS SYSTEM OPERATES UNDER HIGH
PRESSURE. When any part of the circulating
system (e.g., Lock Ring, Pump, Filter, Valves,
etc.) is serviced, air can enter the system and
become pressurized. Pressurized air can cause
the lid to separate which can result in serious
injury, death, or property damage. To avoid this
potential hazard, follow above instructions.
