Philips DVD Video Introduction
Your"PNlips DVDVideo Player will play digital video discs
conforming to the universal DVDVideo siandard.Wilh it,
you will be able to enjoy full length movies with true
cinema picture quality, aswell as stereo or" multi<hannel
sound (depending on the disc and your playback setup).
The unique features of DVD Video, such as selection of
sound track_ subtitle languages and different camera angles
(again,depending on the disc), are all included.
In addition to DVD Video discs, you will be able to play all
Video CDs and Audio CDs (including finalized CD
Recordable (CD R) and CD Rewritable (CD RW)).

Preparation
General Notes
•Depending on yourTV and other equipment you wish to
connect, there are various ways you could connect the
player: Use only one of the connections described below.
• Please refer to the manuals of yourT\4VCR, Stereo System
or other devices as necessary to make the best
connections.
• For"better" sound reproduction, connect the player's audio
out jacks to the audio in jad<s of your ampiifiec receiver;
stereo or audio/video equipment. See 'Connecting to
optional equipment' on page 12.
•YourTV may have only an RF-style jack, usually
labelled Antenna In, 75 ohm ( _) or RF IN.You
will need an RF modulator in order to connect the
DVD Player to yourTV. See your electronics
retailer for details on RF modulator availability
and operations.
Caution:
- Make sure the DVD Player is connected
directly to the TV. Set theTV to the correct video
input channel.
- Do not connect the DVD Player's audio out
jacks to the phono in jack of your audio system.
- Do not connect your DVD Player via your
VCR.The DVD image could be distorted by the
copy protection system.
- Set yourTV to the correctVideo In channel.
Such channels may be called AUX orAUXILIARY
IN, AUDIO/VIDEO orA/V IN, EXTt/EXT2/
EXTERNAL IN, etc. These channels are often
near channel 00 on the TV. See yourTV owner's
manual for details or keep changingTV channels
until you see the DVD screen saver or Disc
playback on the TV.
Connecting to a TV
• Make one of the following connections, depending on the
capabilities of your existing equipment.
• When using the CONPONENTVIDEO OUT/
PROGRESSIVE SCAN jacks, set theVIDEO OUTPUT
switch to COMPONENT/PROGRESSIVE SCAN,When
using the S-VIDEO OUT jack, set theVIDEO OUTPUT
switch to S VIDEO.

corresponding injacks on theTV using an optionalY PdCr

DVD Player to the audio left!right in jacks on theTV (.4)
using the supplied audio cables.
Progressive Scan (Y Pr/Cr Pb/Cb)

Ifyour television is a high definition or'"digital ready"
television, you may take advantage of the DVD Player's
progresswe scan output for"the highest video resolution
possible. (Refer to page I4,)

IfyourTV does not accept the Progressive Scan format, the
picture will appear scrambled if you try Progressive Scan on
the DVD Playen (Refer to page 14.)
Make sure theTV's Sync Mode setting is correct. For"
example, on some PhilipsTVs, set'SYNC MODE" to
"SYNC NODE 2."An incorrect Sync Node setting will
cause the picture to shift off center on theTV screen while
using Progressive Scan.Check your TV owneYs manual for
details on correct Sync Node settings,
Connect the COMPONENTVIDEO OUT Y PdCr Pb/Cb
jacks on the DVD Player to the corresponding in jacks on
the TV using an optional Y PdCr Pb/Cb cable (Z),
Connect the Left and Right AUDIO OUT1 jacks of the
DVD Player to the audio left!right in jacks on theTV (A)
using the supplied audio cables.
Notes:
-Set the VIDEO OUTPUT switch to COMPONENT/
PROGRESSIVESCAN.
-The progressive scan circuitry must be activated by
changing the Personal Preference. See page 14.
-Progressivescan does not work with the analog video
connections (yellowVIDEO OUT jack).
S-Video connection
|Connect the SVIDEO OUT jack on the DVD Player to the
S Video in jack on theTV using an optional S Video cable
(Y),
2Connect the Left and Right AUDIO OUT1 jacks of the
DVD Player to the audio left!right in jacks on theTV (A)
using the supplied audio cables.

Connect the VIDEO OUT jack on the DVD Player to the
video in jack on theTV using the video cable supplied (X),

Connecting to an amplifier equipped with
two channel analog stereo or Dolby
Surround
Connect the LeFtand RightAUDIO OUT1 jacksof the DVD
Playerto the audio left and right in jacks on your amplifier,
receiven or stereo system using the supplied audio cables (A)
Connecting to an amplifier equipped with
two channel digital stereo (PCM) or to an
Audio/Video receiver equipped with a
multi-channel decoder (Dolby Digital TM,
MPEG 2, or DTS)
| Connect one of the DVD Playeds DIGITAL OUT jacks
(OPTICAL Gor COAXIAL F) to the corresponding in jack
on your amplifier Use an optional digital (optical Gor
coaxial F) audio cable,

Digital Multi-channel sound
A digital multi channel connection provides the best sound
qualit)4 For"this you need a multi channel Audio/Video
receiver that supports one or more of the audio formats
supported by your DVD Player (NPEG 2, Dolby DigitaF M
and DTS). Check the receiver manual and the Iogos on the
front of the receiver
Warning:
Due to the DTS Licensing agreement, the digital
output will be in DTS digital out when DTS audio
stream is selected.
Notes;
-If the audio format of the digital output does not match the
capabilities of your receiver,the receiver will produce a strong,
distorted sound or no sound at all.
-Six Channel Digital Surround Sound via digital connection
can only be obtained if your receiver is equipped with a Digital
Multi-channel decoder.
-Tosee the audio format of the current DVD in the On-
Screen Display;press the AUDIO button.
-There are two sets ofAUDIO OUT jacks on the DVD Player.
TheAUDIO OUT2 jacks could be used if you want to connect
the DVD Player to a second piece of equipment, such as
another stereo. Use audio cable to connect theAUDlO OUT2
Right and Leftjacks to the Right and LeftAUDIO IN jacks on
the other equipment.
Remember, you only need one audio and one video connection
between the TV and the DVD Player,soyou do not have to use
all the jacks on the DVD Player.

General Explanation
This manual gives the basic instructions [or operating the
DVD Player Some DVDs require specific operahon or
allow only limited operation during playback.When this
occurs, the symbol _) appears on theTV screen, indicating
that the operation is not permitted by the DVD Player or is
not available on the disc,
Remote control operation
Unless stated, all operations can be carried out with the
remote control, Always point the remote control directly at
the player; making sure there are no obstructions between
the remote and the player:
Corresponding keys on the front panel of the player can
also be used,
On-screen display operation
• A number of operahons can be carded out via the on-
screen display on theTV screen, Access the on-screen
display by pressing the DISPLAY button on the remote
control.
• Pressing DISPLAY again will clear the on-screen display
from the screen,
• Press • or • to select an item; the selected item will be
• Press 41or • to change the setting of an item. For some
functions, the setting will be regtstered immediately; for
others, OK must be pressed,

-ProgressiveScan only works when theVIDEO OUTPUT
switch on the rear panel is set to COMPONENT/
PROGRESSIVESCAN.
-ProgressiveScan only appears in the menu if the VIDEO
OUTPUT switch is set to COMPONENT/PROGRESSIVE SCAN.
-Make sure the TV'SSync Mode setting is correct. For
example, on some PhilipsTVs,set "SYNC MODE'to "SYNC
MODE 2."An incorrect Sync Mode setting will cause the
picture to shift off-center on the TV screen while using
Progressive Scan.Check your TV owner's manual for details on
correct SyncMode settings.
Caution:
-Once the setting for progressivescan output is entered, an
image will only be visibleon a progressivescan compatible TV or
monitor. If youset ProgressiveScan to On in error,you must reset
the unit. PressSTOPto stop any disc that is playing.Next, press
STOPagain and hold it for fivesecondsbefore releasing it.The
video output will be restoredto the standard setting,and a
picture will once again be visible on a conventionalanalog TV or
monitor.
Sample Frequency
To change the Sample Frequency setting, first select the
desired Digital Audio Output as indicated above.
I[your receiver" or amplifier is NOT capable of handling
96KHz signals,select 48KHz, When this choice is made, this
unit will automatically convert any 96KHz signals to 48KHz
so your system can decode them,
I[your receiver" or amplifier is capable of handling 96KHz
signals, select 96KHz, When this choice is made, this unit will
pass each type of signal through without any further
processing.
Language
Language (Disc Audio, Disc Subtitle and Disc
Menu)
Select a language for the disc's Menu, Audio and Subtitle.
Audio language and Subtitle language also can be adapted

Sound
- Digital Audio Output
Each DVD disc has a variety of audio output options. Set
the player's Digital Audio Output according to the type of
audio system you use,
DOLBY DIGITAL/PCM: Select "DOLBY DIGITAL/PCM" if
you connected the DVD Player's DIGITAL OUT
(COAXIAL or" OPTICAL) jack to a Dolby Digital decoder
(or an amplifier or other equipment with a DMby Digital
decoder%
Stream/PCM: Select'Stream/PCM" ifiyou connected the
DVD Player's DIGITAL OUT (COAXIAL or OPTICAL) jack
to an amplifier" or other equipment with a DTS decoder;
Dolby Digital decoder or MPEG decoder:
PCM: Select "PC[q" ifiyou connected the DVD Player's
DIGITAL OUT (COAXIAL or OPTICAL) jack to an
amplifier or other equipment with linear PCM only (or" Mini
Disc (MD) recorder or Digital AudioTape (DAT) deck).

- Dynamic Range Control (DRC)
With the DVD format, you carl hear a program's
soundtrack in the most accurate and rea[istic presentation
possible, thanks to digita] audio technology4 However; you
may wish to compress the dynamic range of the audio
output (the difference between the loudest sounds and the
quietest ones).Then, you may listen to a movie at a lower
volume without losing dialog intelligibilib4 Set DRC to On
for this effect,

information that applies to the complete disc or to

some discs, Ratings are country dependent, The 'Parental
Control' feature allows you to prevent discs from being
played by your children or to have certain discs played with
alternative scenes,

enter the 4 digit code or change the rating level in order to
play the disc,

Enter the code ofia country/area whose standards were
used to rate the DVD video disc, refierring to the list on

Video Mode Setting
With certain discs,the playback picture may be flickering or
Dot Crawl isshown on straight lines,That meansVertical
interpolation or De interlace is not perfectly matched with
the disc, In this case, the picture quality may be improved by
changing the video mode,
1To change the video mode, press and hold DISPLAY about
three seconds during disc playback.The new video mode
number selected isdisplayed on theTV screen. Check
whether the video quality has improved. If not, repe_t the
above procedure until picture quality is improved.
• Video mode change sequence:
MODE1 --- MODE2 --_ MODE3 --_ MODE4 --- MODES
• Ifyou turn offthe power; the video mode will return to
initial state (MODE1).

Marker search
You can start playback from a memorized point. Up to nine
points can be memorized,

To repeat a sequence:
|During disc playback press A B at your
chosen starting point,
4 A (_) appears on the player display
*_ PressA-B again at your chosen end point,
4 A (_) B appears on the display and the
sequence begins to play repeatedly
3To exit the sequence and return to normal play,press A B
again,
