PHILIPS “FOUR ACES”
Deluxe Solid-State Portable
Your new Philips radio is aquality product designed to give you many
hours of trouble-free listening pleasure. This is abroadcast seven tran-
sistor which operates from aself contained power pack or 9volt battery.
Four push buttons control switching on and off, treble tone and bass tone.
Abuilt-in ferrite rod aerial gives excellent performance, asocket is
provided for an external aerial.
The electronic circuit design gives powerful volume with awide tonal
range because it employs Specially developed Hi-Z techniques for
transistors. This, together with the big 6” elliptical loudspeaker gives
exceptionally high quality sound.
POWER SUPPLY:
This set is already supplied complete with Power Pack. (See Section (8)).
BATTERY
The battery is a9-volt Eveready type 765, scientifically developed to
give maximum performance in transistor radios. It fits into the lower
part of the cabinet readily accessible by undoing the screws at the top
the back panel of the cabinet with either ascrewdriver or acoin.
To put the radio into operation detach the back of the cabinet by
unscrewing as above, and take the back off, lifting upwards to slip the
base of the back cover out of the slot in the bottom of the cabinet.

Slide the battery into place between the brackets under the chassis and
on the floor of the cabinet. Push the two-pin polarised plug into the
socket in the top of the battery. Notice that one of the pins is larger
and fits the larger hole in the socket. Do not try to force the plug in
the wrong way round or the transistors will be damaged immediately
the set is switched on.
Afresh battery used four hours every day should last for approximately
600 hours in operation.
CAUTION
If the radio is not going to be used for any length of time, or if the
battery power is used up, it is best to remove the battery from the
cabinet. Aspent or idle battery may corrode and damage the set. This
of course would void the guarantee.
(3.) POWER PACK
Philips have especially designed apower pack to replace the 9volt
battery used with the 475T deluxe portable, to allow the set to be
used as amantel set operated from the mains.
This has been packed inside the set, already connected up and ready for use.
(i) To use the set as amantel:
Simply plug the set in and switch on, operating button (4).
(ii) To use as aportable:
First the power pack has to be removed. Unscrew the back of the
portable as instructed in section (A). Unplug the battery lead
connected to the power pack from the chassis of the set, and
slide the power pack out.
Install the battery as in section (A).
(iii) To re-use as amantel:
Again unscrew the back of the receiver and disconnect the battery
and slide out as for (ii) above. Slide in the power pack and connect
the battery lead from the chassis of the set, noting that the large
pin is in the large socket in the power pack. Make sure, once
connected, you feed the mains lead of the power pack out through
the slot provided at the base of the back.
Do not connect the power pack’s mains lead to the mains until
the back of the portable has been screwed on.
CONTROLS
The push-buttons and controls are numbered on the diagram.
SWITCHING ON
Press button 4down. The “off" button 1is automatically released and
shows ared signal which indicates that the battery is on. The red signal
will remind you to switch off and save battery power when the radio
is not being used or astation goes off the air.
SWITCHING OFF
Press button 1down. The “on" button 4is automatically released.

ADJUSTING THE TONE
There are two tone controls. Button 2is the bass cut control. When
this button is pressed once, it will stay down and the low note response
of the receiver will be decreased. This will give emphasis to the high
notes. When the button is pressed asecond time, it will release and
restore the low note response.
Button 3is the treble cut control. When pressed once it will stay down
and the high note response of the receiver will be decreased. This will
give emphasis to the low notes. When pressed again, the button will
release and the high note response will be restored.
VOLUME SETTING
The volume control is the thumb wheel control 5on the left hand
side of the dial. Set it for the best sound level.
STATION SELECTION
Use the thumb wheel control 6on the right hand side of the dial.
Select the station of your choice. The complete broadcast band is covered
from 517 to 1622 kilocycles. The majority of New Zealand broadcast
stations have been marked on the dial scale.
IN YOUR CAR .
To use this portable as acar radio, plug your auto radio aerial into the
aerial socket at the back of the portable. Of course, the aerial itself
must be mounted on the outside of the car. Most late model cars are
fitted with suppressors to remove ignition interference, but it may be
necessary to have them installed. Ask your dealer.
OUTDOOR AERIAL
Reception will be improved in some difficult country areas by connecting
an outdoor aerial to the aerial socket.
