Before you
Begin • Instructions in this manual assume you are familiar with using a
personal computer (PC) and a disk operating system (such as
MS-DOS®). Refer to your DOS manual if needed.
• The UZC-256 does not function with the following: a) indicating
devices that do not produce a steady periodic or non-periodic
sound; and b) appliances that produce their own code (such as
appliances with electronic sounds).

The UZC-256 Universal Zone Coder is a one-board module that
stores and communicates customer-specified codes for up to 256
initiating zones in a fire alarm system. You can create a program file,
containing coded information on a PC and store the file on the UZC-
256. Fire alarm systems that operate with the UZC-256 include the
following:
• S5000/S500
• S5000/AIM-200
• AM2020/AFP1010
• AFP-400
Key Terms and icons in this manual include the following:
Coded Output – Coded information from the UZC-256 Application
that controls the three relay outputs on the UZC-256 module.
Control Relay – One of three relays on the UZC-256 module,
controlled by the UZC-256 Application, that supplies coded informa-
tion to designated circuits.
Output Code – Four-digit code in the UZC-256 Application to specify
an addressable or intelligent module, device, or annunciator.
Program file – A PC file containing coded information for the
UZC-256.
UZC-256 Application – The menu-driven program used to create a
program file.
UZC-256 – used throughout the manual to refer to the UZC-256
module.
This manual contains information on the following:
• How to install and configure the UZC-256 for programming.
• How screens and menus work, including a map of the UZC-256
application.
• How to use the UZC-256 application and transfer files.

The UZC-256 Programming Kit consists of a software kit and a
hardware kit. Table 1 lists the contents and part numbers for each
kit.

Connect the UZC-256 to the PC to load or download a program file
on the UZC-256. Figure 1 shows a block diagram of the UZC-256
module connected to a PC. Figure 1 contains instructions for
connecting a PC to the UZC-256 module.

WARNING: Never connect a PC to a UZC-256 module
that is installed in a fire alarm system with an earth
ground fault condition. Doing so can damage the PC
and cause loss of data.
You can install and use the UZC-256 Application on a stand-alone
PC. You only need to connect the PC to the UZC-256 when transfer-
ring files.
Step Action
1Configure the PC for a serial port at COM1 or COM2.
Note: If the PC does not have a 9-pin serial port, use the supplied
9-pin to 25-pin adapter.
2Turn off power to the UZC module and the PC.
3Plug one end of the null modem cable into the 9-pin connector on
the UZC module.
4Plug the other end of the null modem cable into the serial port on
the PC.
5Set DIP Switch 1 on the UZC module to "Program" mode by putting
the switch in the down position (Figure 1).

Introduction
The two disks (5.25" and 3.5") in the UZC-256 software kit contain
identical files. Use one of the disks to install the UZC-256 applica-
tion.

Step Action
1Put the program disk in a disk drive.
2If installing on a hard drive:
a. Create a directory named “UZC.”
b. Copy the contents of the disk to the directory.
3Type the pathname or the letter of the disk drive.
4Type: “UZC” to start the program.

The UZC Application is a menu-driven application. Figure 3 contains a
map of the menus in the UZC application.

Getting Started
Starting the application includes two tasks:
1. Opening the application and completing the Opening screen.
2. Displaying the Main Menu where you select programming and
file transfer options.
Starting
the UZC-256
Application
Opening
Screen Start the application by typing the “UZC” at the DOS prompt. The
Opening screen displays.
The Opening screen serves as the first screen—as well as the “top”
screen—of the UZC-256 application. The screen also prompts for
the number of the serial port connected between the PC and the
UZC-256.
Purpose of the
Screen
You can program the UZC-256 without connecting the PC, but the
UZC-256 application requires an entry for the serial port to con-
tinue to the next screen. If transferring files between the UZC-256
and the PC, refer to “Connecting the UZC-256” in Chapter 1.
You can get to the Opening screen in one of two ways:
• Start the application; or
• Select option “A” from the Main Menu.
How to get the
Screen
The Opening screen prompts for the number of the serial port
connecting the UZC-256 to your PC. Complete the screen as
follows:
1. The screen lists two choices: COM1 or COM2.
2. Type a number (1 or 2) corresponding to the serial port con-
nected to the UZC-256. Refer to the note below.

Getting Started
The Main Menu displays after you successfully enter a number for the
serial port. The following subsections explain how to use the Main
Menu.
Main Menu
The Main Menu provides options that let you get program options,
load files, leave the application, or start over with the Opening Screen.
Function
The UZC application automatically displays the Main Menu after you
complete the Opening screen. Program screens also provide an
option to get back to the Main Menu at any time.
Figure 5 contains a display of the Main Menu with option 3 selected.

How to Use
the Screen Table 6 contains a function table that shows how to use the Main Menu.

3) Display Sample File Load a sample program file that you
can modify.
4) Copy Codes from Diskfile to UZC Load a UZC program file created on a
PC into UZC memory.
5) Copy Codes from UZC to Diskfile Load a program file stored in UZC
memory into PC memory.
6) Exit to DOS Leave the application and return to
the DOS prompt.
A) Change Serial Port Return to the Opening Screen to select
the COM port.

Chapter 3: Programming the UZC
This chapter explains how to create and modify a program file,
organized into the following topics:
• Program modes
• Starting a program file
• Entering Output Codes
• Program the UZC as a Counter
• Program the UZC as a Coder
• Program the General Alarm
• Modifying a program file
Overview
The UZC application provides two programming modes, listed in
Table 7.
Program Mode… Allows you to…
Counting Program the UZC output relays to activate after a specific
number of alarms occur within pre-defined range of
annunciators.
Coding Program up to 256 addressable devices or zones,
depending on the capacity of the fire alarm system. When
the FACP senses an active coded device or circuit, the UZC
sends a pulse to the notification appliance via the UZC
control relays.

Programming involves filling in data fields on program screens. Data
fields vary according to the program mode and the system. The
programming sections contain details of filling in system-specific or
programming-specific data fields.
Filling in output codes, however, is common to all programming
modes and systems. You enter a unique four-digit output code to
program the following:
• Installed circuits for the S5000/S500 and S5000/AIM-200.
• Annunciator points representing software zones or initiating
devices in the AM2020/AFP1010.
Output codes consist of four digits, using a combination of decimal
and hexadecimal numbers.

Counting mode lets you program the UZC control relays to activate
after a specific number of devices alarm occur within a defined
“window” of annunciator addresses. The UZC monitors the control
relays within the window. When the specified number of devices
activate, the UZC sends a pulse through a control relay to the
notification appliance.

AM2020/AFP1010 and AFP-400 systems can support up to 32
annunciator addresses, each consisting of 64 points. S5000, S500,
and S5000/AIM-200 systems support a lesser number of annuncia-
tors, depending on the number of installed modules.

Coding mode allows you to program up to 256 separate and distinct
codes. A code consists of the device address and the assigned number of
a point. The UZC can use up to four annunciator addresses. Each
annunciator point contains up to 64 points.
The UZC monitors each programmed point. When a device at one of the
points activates, the UZC sends a pulse through one of the control relays
to a notification appliance.

Each coding screen contains a set of six variable fields that define the
zone codes assigned to each circuit or annunciator point. Before pro-
gramming zone codes, complete these fields as shown below.

Coding screens also contain the “All Call” and “Receive Only” options.
Enter values for these fields according to the following:
Do not select All Call and Receive Only at the same time.
Receive Only
Receive Only means that a device can only receive information from the
FACP. You can select this option if other Receive/Transmit devices
share an EIA-485 address.

All Call is an option that allows the UZC to activate all indicating circuits
(Indicating, speaker, and releasing) at the start of the General Alarm
code. Table 13 lists the systems supporting the All Call option and the
values to enter in the “All Call” field.

TCM-2 and TCM-4. To disable the All Call option, program circuits on
the modules for Switch Inhibit. Refer to the TCM-2 or TCM-4 Manual.
