1. INTRODUCTION
1.1Checklist
Check the contentsof your package for following parts:

1.2About the Switch
With two openslotsavailable forfiberor copper Gigabit modules,the
FGSW-2402S canaccelerate yourCat5backboneto 10 timesthe
performanceofexisting100Megabit without re-wiringyourcabling
infrastructure. Theoptional Gigabit modulescanbeGigabit fiber-optic,
(SX orLX) andalsoFastEthernetfiber-optic upto 10kilometersaway.
Poweredby anon-blocking9.6Gbpsbackplane,theFGSW-2402S
simplifiesthetaskof upgradingyour LAN to cater for increased
bandwidth demand.
Equippedwithaconsole interfacetheGigabit Smart Switchcanbe
programmedfor basicswitchmanagementfunctionssuchas
bandwidth provision, port statusconfiguration, VLAN parameters,
port-trunking, and port monitoring.

2. HARDWARE DESCRIPTION
This product seriesprovidethree different runningspeeds –10Mbps,
100Mbps,and1000Mbps(port 25,26)in thesame switchand
automatically distinguish thespeed of incomingconnection.
ThissectiondescribesthehardwarefeaturesoftheseSwitches. For
easier managementandcontrol of theswitch,familiarizeyourself with
itsdisplay indicators,andports.Front panelillustrationsin thischapter
displaytheunit LED indicators.Before connectingany networkdevice
tothe switch, readthischapter carefully

2.1Front Panel
Theunit front panel provides asimple interface monitoring the
switch. It includesa power and port indicator for eachport and a
RS-232 console port for setting upthe switch viaaconnectionto a
console terminal or PC usingaterminal emulationprogram.

2.2Rear Panel
Therear panel of theSwitch indicatesanAC inlet power socket,
which acceptsinput power from 100 to 240VAC, 50-60Hz.

Power Notice:
1. Thedeviceisapower-required device,it means, it will not
operate till it ispowered. If your networksshouldactive all the
time, pleaseconsiderusingUPS (UninterruptedPower Supply)
for your device. It will prevent youfromnetworkdata loss or
networkdowntime.
2. In some area, installing asurgesuppressiondevicemay also
help to protectyour switch frombeingdamagedby unregulated
surgeor current tothe Switchor the power adapter.

2.3Hardware Installation
2.3.1 Switch Placement
Thissectiondescribeshow toinstall yourFGSW-2402SGigabit
/Fast Ethernet Switchandmakeconnectionsto theswitch.
Pleasereadthefollowingtopics andperform theproceduresin
theorder beingpresented.

needsoftware configuration.Toinstall your FGSW-2402Sona
desktop or shelf, simply complete thefollowingsteps.
2.3.1.1 Desktop or ShelfMounting
Toinstall aFGSW-2402S onadesktoporshelf, simply
completethe following steps:
Step1: Attachtherubber feet to therecessedareasonthe
bottom of theswitch.
Step2: Place theFGSW-2402S on a desktop or shelf near an
AC power source.
Step3: Keep enough ventilation space betweenthe switch and
thesurroundingobjects
Note: When choosing alocation, pleasekeep in mind the
environmental restrictionsdiscussed in Chapter 1.4,
Specification.
Step4: Connect your FGSW-2402S to network devices
A. Connectoneendofastandard networkcable to the10/100
RJ-45ports onthe front of the FGSW-2402S.
B. Connecttheotherendof thecabletothenetworkdevices
such asprinter servers, workstationsor routers…etc.
Note: Connection to the SwitchrequiresUTPCategory5
network cabling with RJ-45 tips. Formore information,
please see the Cabling Specification in Chapter 1.4,
Specification and Appendix.
Step5: Supplypower totheSwitch.
A. Connect oneend of thepower cabletothe FGSW-2402S
B. Connectthepower plugof thepowercableto astandard
wall outlet.

shouldremainsolid Green.
2.3.1.2 Rack Mounting
Toinstall theswitchin a 19-inch standardrack,follow the
instructionsdescribed below.
Step1: PlaceyourFGSW-2402Sonahard flatsurface, with the
front panel positioned towardsyour front side.
Step2: Attach a rack-mount bracketto eachside ofthe switch
withsuppliedscrews attachedtothepackage.Figure 4
showshowto attachbrackets to onesideof the switch.

Caution:
You must use the screwssupplied with the mounting
brackets. Damage caused to the parts byusing incorrect
screws would invalidate your warranty.
Step3: Secure thebrackets tightly.
Step4: Follow the samestepstoattach thesecondbracket to
theopposite side.
Step5: After thebrackets are attachedtothe switch, use
suitablescrews to securely attach thebrackets to the
rack, as shown in Figure 5

Desktop or Shelf Mounting toconnect thenetwork
cablingandsupply power to your switch.
2.3.2 Network Installation
2.3.2.1 Connecting end node, hub or switch
1.PlacetheSwitchonasmoothsurface or fastenthemounting
brackets with theprovided screwsin a standard 19”rack.
2.Connect switchor PC toone port of the Switchusing
Category3/4/5 UTP/STP cabling.
3.Connect another switch or PC tothe other port of Switch by
followingthesame process asdescribed in Step2.

Notice:
Cable distance forSwitch
The cable distancebetween Ethernet Switchand hub/PC
should not exceed 100 meter for UTP/STP cable, 220m
for62.5/125 fibercableand 500m for 50/125 fiber cable in
Gigabit Ethernet and 2 kilometersin Fast Ethernet
full-duplex.
Make sure the wiring iscorrect
It can be used Category3/4/5 cable in 10 Mbps operation.
To reliablyoperate your network at 100Mbps and
1000Mbps, you must use an Unshielded Twisted-Pair
(UTP) Category5 cable, or better Data Grade cabling.
While a Category 3 or4 cable may initially seem to work,
it will soon cause data loss.

2.3.2.2 Connecting to Network Backbone or Server
Connect to theGigabit Ethernet ports with Category 5copper
cable orfiberopticcablefor uplinkingtoanetworkbackboneor
network server. Theseportsoperateat 1000Mbpsin full-duplex
mode. A validconnectionisindicatedwhentheLink LED is
light. Thefollowingsectionsdescribe thefunctionof LEDs on
thefront panel
Function: theindicator LED flash up whenever there is a
collisionbetweenadirectly attachedendnode andany other
node, and light up steadilyfor Full-duplexmode.
