1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Identication of The Product

1.2 General Description
TheOS-3controlboxisanenergysavingcontrolunitdesigned
tobeusedforcontrollingexhaustfansinvehicleexhaust
systems,withorwithoutaparticleltrationsystem.Together
withapressureswitchandoptionaltemperatureswitch,this
energysavingcontrollermakesafullyautomaticsystemforthe
controlofthevehicleexhaustfan.Thecontrollercanbesetfor
bothmanualorautomaticcontrolofthefan.Dependingonthe
congurationofasystem,severaloptionsforswitchesand
remotestartfunctionsareavailable.Thetwomostcommon
typesofswitchesthataretypicallyusedareapressureswitchto
detectpressuredifferencesinthesystemwhenavehicleis
connected,and,anoptionaltemperatureswitchtodetect
temperaturelevelsinthesystemalsocreatedwhenavehicleis
connected.
TheOS-3alsoincludesanalarmoutput,whichcanbeusedfor
statusoutputtoanonsitecontrolsystem(byothers).Abuilt-in
delayofffunctionwillensurethatthefancontinuestorunfor
sometimeafterthevehiclehasbeendisconnected,thisensures
allofthetoxicgasesintheductsystemwillbeexhaustedoutof
theductingbeforethefanstops.Thedelayofftimecaneasilybe
adjustedbetween3minutes-60minutes.

2 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
2.1 Operation
Thecontrollercanbesetforbothmanualorautomaticcontrolof
thefan.Dependingonsystem,differentswitchesforstartingthe
systemcanbeused.Mainlytwotypesofswitcheswillbeused;
pressureswitchtodetectpressuredifferenceinsystemsand
temperatureswitchestodetecttemperaturelevelinthesystem.
TheOS-3controlboxalsoincludesavisiblealarmdevice,which
canbeusedforstatusoftheairowintheexhaustsystem.A
builtin“afterrunningtime”functionwillsecurethattoxicgases
intheductsystemwillbeexhaustedoutoftheductingbefore
thefanstops.Theafterrunningtimecaneasilybeadjusted
between3minutes-60minutes.
Whenthecontrolunitissetinto“automatic”position,the
exhaustfanisstartedbyasignalfromanexternallymounted
pressure,or/andtemperatureswitch.Normallythesystemis
activatedbythepressureswitchandkeptrunningbythe
optionaltemperatureswitch.
2.1.1 Pressure switch
Thepressureswitchreactstoanincreaseinpressurewithinthe
hose(positivepressure)whichoccursinthesystemwhena
vehicleisstarteduporattachedwhileitisrunning.Thepressure
switchisadjustabletoaccomodatevariousenginesizes.
Adjustmentstothisswitchshouldonlybeperformedby
authorizedservicetechnician.
2.1.2 Optional: Temperature switch
Theoptionaltemperatureswitchdetectswhenthetemperature
inthesystemhasreachedbetween90°Fto130°F(32°Cto
54°C)(tobedeterminedandadjustedbyanauthorizedservice
technicianonly).
Thistemperatureriseoccurswhenarunningvehicleisattached
tothesystem,andwillensurethesystemstaysrunningwhile
thevehicleisinoperation.
2.1.3 Automatic Mode
Thismodeofoperationallowsforeverydayusewhenexitingthe
restationforemergencycalls.Whentheengineisstarted,the
pressureswitchcloses,thiscompletesthecircuittothecontrol
boxcausingthefantoturnon.Whentheengineturnsofforthe
apparatusleavestherestation,thepressureand/or
temperatureinthesystemdecreasesandthecontrolbox
enteresintoadelayoffmode.Oncethetimerhascompletedits
(adjustable)timedelay,thefanstopsafterthepresetruntimeis
up.
2.1.4 Manual Mode
WhenthecontrolboxissettotheManualRunMode,the
exhaustfanwillruncontinuously.Thisshouldbeutilizedfor
stationaryrunningofthevehiclesintherestationfor
maintenancechecks.WhileintheManualRunModeandrunning
avehicleatHIGHIDLE,operationshouldbelimitedto1500RPM
for5minutes.ToexitManualRunMode,presstheSTOPbutton.
ThesystemwillshutdownandautomaticallyreturntoAUTO
STARTandbereadyforthenextemergencycall.For2007or
newerdieselvehicleswithDPF(DieselParticulateFilter)units
shouldneverbeallowedto“regenerate”whileconnectedtothe
exhaustsystem.Vehicleswhichhaverecentlyundergone
“regeneration”shouldnotbeconnectedtothesystemuntil
normalexhaustgasoperatingtemperatureshavereturned.
2.1.5 Stop Mode
Whenpressingthestopbutton,thefanwillstopimmediately,
andafterashortperiodoftime(2-3seconds),thecontrolbox
willautomaticallymovebackintoautomaticmode.Thisisa
built-insafetyfunctionwhichwillreducetheriskofhaving
exhaustgasleakageinthesystemduetooperatorerror.
2.1.6 Alarm Mode
Thealarmdevicewilldetecthighpressurelossacrossthe
optionallterunit.WhentheFanOnLEDindicatorlightis
ashing,thepressureacrossthelterhasexceededthe
acceptablerange,theltershouldbereplacedassoonas
possible to maintain proper system operation.
3 SAFETY

Themanufacturerdoesnotacceptanyliabilityfordamagetothe

instructionsinthismanual,orbynegligenceduringinstallation,
use,maintenance,andrepairoftheproductmentionedonthe

manual.

4 INSTALLATION
WARNING!
Donotattemptinstallationofthisunitunlessyou
arefamiliarwiththenecessarytools,equipment,
utilityconnectionsandpotentialhazards.
Installationshouldbeperformedonlybyaqualied
service provider. Failure to do so could result in
reducedperformanceoftheunit,seriouspersonal
injuryordeath.

Neverinstallthecontrolboxinareaswith
ammablegases.
ATTENTION
TheOS-3 controlboxisdeliveredwithoutcablesfor
externaleldwiring.
Allinterconnectcables/wiresizeusedshallbe
suppliedbyothersandcomplywithUL,NECandall
othernationalandlocalstandardscodes.
Theglandsusedforinsertingthecableintothe
OS-3 controlboxshouldbeplacedinthebottomof
thecasing.
Thecableshouldttightlyintheglandtoprevent
anymoistureenteringtheinsideoftheOS-3 control
box.
4.1 Unpacking
Checkthattheproductiscomplete.Thepackageshouldcontain:
- OS-3 control box
- doorkey
4.2 Electric connection
ConnecttheOS-3inaccordancewiththeseparatelysupplied
electricaldiagram.
CAUTION!
Electric connection to be executed in accordance
withlocalrequirements.Ensurecompliancewiththe
EMCregulatoryarrangements.
WARNING!
Makesurethemachineissuitableforconnectionto
thelocalmains.Informationabouttheconnection
voltageandfrequencycanbefoundonthe
identicationplate.
ATTENTION
Thethermalrelayshouldbesetaccordingtothe
overloadmentionedontheidenticationplateon
themotor.
4.3 Primary Wiring Procedure
4.3.1 Terminal Block 1
Islocatedinthelowerleft-handcorneroftheOS-3controlbox
andconsistsofincomingpowerelectricalterminalblocksL1,L2,
L3.Itisimportanttonoteonsinglephaseboxes,L3willnotbe
installed.Outgoingpowertothefanmotorviatheoverload
outputlocationsT1,T2,T3onsinglephasecontrolboxestheT3
terminalwillbeoccupiedbyawirelooping“backthrough”the
contactor,thisisnecessaryforproperoperationandshouldnot
bealtered.Groundshouldbelandedonterminalstriponthe
greenandyellowterminalblock,lowvoltagecontrolwiring

terminalblocks(0,24Vand1through8)andelectricaloverload
usesforprotectionforbothprimary(F1,F2)andsecondary(F3).
NOTE: Primarylinevoltagemustnotbegreaterorlessthan8
%ofratedvoltagelistedonvoltagetap.Forexample,Tap120
volt(110–130voltagerangeisacceptable)forexcessivelylow
linevoltage,abuckboosttransformermayberequired.

4.3.2 Primary Voltage Wiring
Ontherightsideoftheterminalblockistherstterminalblock
markedGND(greenground),hereyouwillconnectyourground
wire(properlysizedperNEC).Inthesecondterminalblock
markedL1,youwillconnectyourrstpowerwire.Inthethird
terminalblockmarkedL2,youwillconnectyoursecondpower
wire.Forthefourthterminalblock(whenapplicable),marked
L3,youwillconnectyourthirdpowerwire.
NOTE: Thelinesupplyvoltagefromyourbuilding,whichwill
supplyyourmotor,shallbeconnecteddirectlytoL1,L2for
singlephaseandL1,L2,andL3for3-phase.Re-checkthatrated
voltagecorrespondswithsupplyvoltagetoavoiddamageto
electricalcomponentsorcontrolwiring.

4.3.3 Field Power Wiring of Control Box, Safety
Disconnect and Fan Motor
Theprimarywiringoftheelectricalsystemmustberatedforthe
maximumampsandHPratingofthefanmotorloadaswellas
thewiringvoltagedrop,whichiscalculatedforthedistance,you
arerunning.SeePlymoventWiringChartinthebackofthis
manualasaguideforwiring.Itiscriticaltoalwaysfollowlocal

4.4 Primary Wiring Procedures (Control Wiring)
4.4.1 Control Voltage Wiring
Theterminalblocks0,24Vand1through8areusedforlow
voltagecontrolwiringofoptionalwirelesscontrolsystem,
remotemountedpressureswitchforstartingfunctions,clean
lterindicatorandtemperatureswitch.Anoptionalremotealarm
relayconnectionisavailableforconnectiontoBuilding
AutomationSystems(BAS).
4.4.2 Pressure Switch / Temperature Switch (engine
start/stop)
Thepressureswitchandoptionaltemperatureswitch,whichis
soldseparately,willbewiredtoterminalblock1and2.Ifmore
thanonepressure/temperatureswitchisutilizedinasystem
theymustbewiredinparalleltoachieveproperoperation.
NOTE: Controlwiressupplyingterminalblock1and2mustbea
minimumof16AWG/1.29mm²,smallerwiresizingwillresultin
improper system operation.
Amomentarymanualpushbuttonstartswitchcanalsobe
placedinparallelinthiscircuitforremotestartingofthesystem.
4.4.3 Remote Alarm (optional)
Terminals 3, 4, and 5 are a relay dry contact connection for a
BuildingAutomationSystem(BAS).Terminalblock3provides
thecommonconnection,terminal4providesanormallyclosed
contact connection and terminal 5 provides a normally open
contact connection.
NOTE: Relay output is a dry contact potential free and will
requireadditionalcontrolequipmentdependingonitsuse.
4.4.4 Pressure Switch (lter alarm)
Anexhaustventilationparticulatelter(suchasthePlymovent
MultiSmokeFilter)maybeprovidedwithanadjustablepressure
indicatorswitch,whichmonitorstheltersusefullife.Terminals
6and7(potentialfree)areutilizedtoconnectandoperatethe
pressureindicatorswitch.Whenthelterbecomesdirty,the
pressureswitchwillsendasignaltothecontrolboxandin-turn
willashtheFanOnLEDindicatorlight,locatedonthefaceof
theOS-3controlpanel,whenthefanmotorisrunning.
Indicatingalterchangeisrequired.
4.5 Transformer Wiring Procedure
4.5.1 Multi-tap Control Transformer
DesignedbyPlymoventtoallowtheeldelectriciantheabilityto
selecttheprimaryvoltageofhischoice.Thisvoltageselection
rangesfrom120voltthrough600voltVAC.Thetransformerhas
beendesignedtooperateinboth50and60Hzenvironments.
NOTE: Primarylinevoltagemustnotbegreaterorlessthan8
%ofratedvoltagelistedonvoltagetap.Forexample,Tap120
volt(110–130voltagevariantacceptable)forlowlinevoltage,
abuckboosttransformermayberequired.(Suppliedbyothers).
4.5.2 Primary Voltage Connection
Onthetoprightsideoftransformeryouwillndaterminalblock
with8pointsofconnection.Commonblackwireisconnectedto
thetopterminalblock(blacktoyellowwire)andwillalways
remaininthispositionregardlessofthevoltageadjustmentthat
youwillbemaking.Thevoltageadjustinggraywireispresetfor
thevoltageordered.Youmayberequiredtorepositionthe
voltageadjustingwiretothelinesupplyvoltagepresentatyour
installation/facility.Forexample,adjustingto120voltline
voltage,movethevoltageadjustingwiretowiretapsecondfrom
thetopofterminalblock(blacktowhite).Viewyellowlabelfor
correctwiretapcolorforeachavailablevoltage.
NOTE: Improperwiringwillresultindamageofotherelectrical
components.Re-checkthatratedvoltagecorrespondswith
supplyvoltagetoavoiddamagetoelectricalcomponents.
Always ensure power is off and all required procedures for
facility(suchaslockouttagout)areproperlyfollowedbefore
makinganyadjustmentstothecontrolsystem.

4.5.3 Secondary Voltage Connection
Ontheleftsideofthetransformeryouwillviewaterminalblock
with2pointsofconnection:oneorangeandonepurple.The
wire taps will produce 24 VAC.
NOTE: Thesecondaryvoltageconnectionsarepresetfromthe
factory,andshallneverbechanged.
4.5.4 Electrical Wiring
Allelectricalwiringwhichincludesprimary,secondaryand
controlwiringmustbedonebyacertied/licensedelectrician
andinaccordancewiththeNEC.
4.6 Pressure Switch Procedure
4.6.1 Pressure Switch
Plymoventhasincorporatedapressureswitch,whichsensesthe
exhaustgaspressuregeneratedbythevehicle.Thisadjustable
pressureswitchallowstheelectricalcontrollertostartthe
operationofthefan.Thepressureswitchhasbeenpresetat0.1”
in.H2Oandiseldadjustable.
4.6.2 Electrical Wiring
Thepressureswitchutilizesaparallelconnectionwithan
optionaltemperatureswitch,whichisconnectedtoterminals1
and2locatedonterminalblock1(TB1).Boththepressureand
thetemperatureswitchwillmaintainanormallyopenposition
whenvehicleisnotinoperation.
NOTE: Electricalwiringprovidingsignaltotemperatureand
pressureswitchmustbe16AWG/1.29mm²wire(minimum)
sizeandshouldnotberanontopofuorescentlightxturesor
withotherwirecablesduetoinducedcurrentandorelectrical
interference.Controlwiringmustbedonebycertied/licensed
electrician.
4.6.3 Pressure Adjustment Procedure
Thepressureswitchallowsforeldadjustmentsbyplacinga
screwdriverintheslottedscrewinthebackoftheswitch.By
turningthedialclockwise(in)youwillincreasethesensitivity
andbyturningthedialcounterclockwise(out)youwilldecrease
thesensitivity.Toresetthepressureswitchadjustmentinthe
eld,withthepoweroff,disconnectthe2lowvoltagewiresand
connectacontinuitymeteracrossthe2terminalsoftheswitch
andslowlyturnadjustingscrewclockwise(in)untilyouget
continuity(contactsclosed),thenturnthescrewcounter
clockwise(out)1completeturn.Thepressuresetting,mayvary
upordowndependingonthevehiclesoutputpressure.To
accuratelyadjustthepressureswitchstartthevehicleandcheck
thatthefanstartsimmediately,turnoffvehicleandtheexhaust
fanshouldrunformaximum5minutes.
NOTE: Ifexhaustfandoesnotstart,adjustthepressureswitch
byturningadjustingscrewclockwise(in)1/8ofaturnand
restartthevehicle.Ifthefanstilldoesnotstartrepeat
procedure.Iffanstartswhenthevehicleisnotrunningdecrease
pressuresettingonpressureswitchbyturningadjustmentscrew
counterclockwise(out)1/4turn.
4.7 Temperature Switch Procedure
4.7.1 Optional Temperature Switch
Plymoventhasincorporatedanoptionaltemperatureswitch,
whichsensestheexhaustgastemperaturegeneratedbythe
vehicle.Thisadjustablebi-metaltemperatureswitchallowsthe
electricalcontrollertomaintaintheoperationofthefanforas
longasthevehicleisrunning.Theadjustmentscalerangesfrom
90°F/30°Cto130°F/55°C,whichallowstheeldinstaller
theabilitytoadjustthetemperaturesetting.
4.7.2 Electrical Wiring
Thetemperatureswitchutilizesaparallelconnectionwiththe
pressureswitch,whichisconnectedtoterminals1and2located
atterminalblock1(TB1).Boththetemperatureandthe
pressureswitchwillmaintainanormallyopenpositionwhen
vehicleisnotinoperation.
NOTE: Electricalwiringprovidingsignaltotemperatureand
pressureswitchmustbe16AWG/1.29mm²wiresizeandshould
notberanontopofuorescentlightxturesorwithotherwire
cables due to induced current and or electrical interference.
Controlwiringmustbedonebycertied/licensedelectrician.
4.7.3 Temperature Adjustment Procedure
Thetemperatureswitchallowsforeldadjustmentbyplacinga
screwdriverintheslotteddialinthecenteroftheswitch.By
turningthedialcounterclockwiseyouwilldecreasethe
temperaturesettingandbyturningthedialclockwiseyouwill
increasethetemperaturesetting.Therecommendedsettingwill
bebetween120°F/49°Cto130°F/55°C.Toaccuratelyadjust
thetemperatureswitchstartthevehicleandallowtorunfor10
minutes,turnoffvehicleandtheexhaustfanshouldrunfor
approximately5to15minutesafterthevehiclehasbeenturned
off.
NOTE:Ifexhaustfancyclesonandoffwhenvehicleisrunning,
itwillbenecessarytoincreasethetimersettinglocatedat
controllercard(seeinstructions).Iffanstartswhenthevehicle
isnotrunning,increasetemperaturesettingontemperature
switch.
4.8 Wireless Control System Procedure
4.8.1 Optional Wireless Control System
TheWirelessTransmitterandReceiverisanoptionalfeature
designedtofacilitateremotelymountingthepressureswitch
and/ortemperatureswitchonthecrabsofaSTRArailsystem
andontheductworksystemoftheSBTAtracksystem.The
receiverincludesanexternalantenna.Thereceiverutilizes
spreadspectrumtechnologyandoffersexcellentelectromagnetic
interference(EMI)tolerance.Unitsaredesignedtoworkwiththe
PlymoventWireless2400MHztransmittersandhasarangeof
500feet.Theseproductswillnotinterferewithorbeaffectedby
Wi-Fisystems.Thelearningreceivercanlearnupto24different
transmitters.Thereceivershalloperateon24VACandbe
mountedinanon-metallicenclosurewithaclearseethroughlid
approximately8’to10’(2.4mto3m)abovethenishedoor
level,directlyabovetheOS-3AutomaticController.
