11.Turnoff and let cool before
servicing. Onlyaqualified service
person should service and repair
heater.
12. Operating heater aboveelevations
of 4,500 feet could causepilot outage.
13. If fireplacehasglass doors, never
operatethisheater withglass doors
closed. If you operateheater withdoors
closed, heat buildup inside fireplacewill
cause glass toburst. If fireplace
opening hasventsat the bottom, you
must open the ventsbeforealways

Thisheater hasapilot withan Oxygen Depletion Sen-
sor(ODS) safetyshutoffsystem. TheODS/pilot shuts
off the heater ifthereis not enough freshair.
PIEZOIGNITIONSYSTEM
Thisheater isequipped withapiezoignitor.Thissys-
temrequiresno matches, batteries,or other sources
tolight heater.
This heater is clean burning.Itrequiresnooutside
venting. Thereis no heat lossout of avent orup a
chimney. Heatis generated byrealistic,dancingyellow
flames.This heateris designedfor vent-free operation
with flue damperclosed.It hasbeen testedand approved
toANSIZ21.2standardforunventedheaters.Stateand

Water vaporis aby-productofgascombustion. An
unvented roomheaterproducesapproximatelyone(1)
ounce(30ml)of waterforevery1,000BTU’s(.3KW’s)of
gasinput per hour.
Unvented roomheatersarerecommended assupplemen-
talheat(a room)ratherthan a primaryheat source(an
entirehouse).Inmostsupplementalheatapplication,the
water vapordoesnot create aproblem.Inmost
applications,the watervapor enhancesthe lowhumidity
atmosphereexperience during cold weather.
Thefollowing stepswillhelp insure thatwatervapordoesnot
becomeaproblem.
1.Besuretheheaterissized properly fortheapplication,
including ample combusionair and circulation air.
2.If highhumidityis experienced, adehumidifiermaybe used
tohelp lower the watervapor content of the air.
3.Donotuseanunventedroomheaterasthe primaryheat
source.

Homeownersweatherstripandcaulk
around windowsand doorsto keep the
cold airout andthewarmair in.During
heatingmonths,homeownerswanttheir
homesasairtight aspossible.
Whileit isgood tomake yourhomeen-
ergyefficient, yourhomeneedsto
breathe. Freshairmustenteryourhome.
Allfuel-burning appliancesneedfreshair
for proper combustion and ventilation.
Exhaustfans, fireplaces,clothesdryers,
and fuel burningappliancesdrawairfrom
the house.Tooperateyou must provide
adequatefreshair for theseappliances.
Thiswill insureproper ventingof vented
fuel-burningappliances.

UnusuallyTightConstruction
Theairthatleaks arounddoorsand win-
dowsmayprovide enough freshair for
combustion andventilation.However,
inbuildingsofunusuallytight
construction,youmustprovideaddi-
tional freshair.
Unusuallytightconstruction
isdefinedasconstruction
where:
a. wallsand ceilingsexposed to the out-
side atmospherehaveacontinuouswa-
tervaporretarder witha rating of one
perm(6x10-11 kgperpa-sec-m2)orless
withopeningsgasketed or sealed and
b. whetherstripping hasbeen added on
windowsthat can opened and doors.
c.caulking orsealantsareapplied to
areassuchasjointsaround windowand
door frames,betweensoleplatesand
floors,betweenwall-ceiling joints,be-
tween wall panels, at penetrations for
plumbing, electrical,andgaslines,and
at other openings.
If yourhomemeetsall of thethree

Determining Mantel Clearances

Avoidanydrafts thatalterburnerflame patterns. Do
notallowfansto blowdirectlyinto the fireplace.Do not
place a blowerinside the burn area ofthe firebox. Ceil-
ing fansmaycreate draftsthat alterflamepatterns.Soot-
ing and improperburning will result.
During manufacturing,fabricating and shipping, various
componentsofthisappliancearetreatedwith certain
oils,filmsorbonding agents.Thesechemicals are not
harmful,but mayproduce annoying smoke and smells
astheyare burned offduring the initialoperation ofthe
appliance,possiblycausing headachesoreyeorlung
irritation. Thisis a normaland temporary occurrence.
Theinitialbreak-inoperationshouldlasttwotothree
hours with the burneratthe highestsetting. Provide
maximum ventilation byopening windowsordoors to
allowodors to dissipate. Anyodors remaining afterthis
initialbreak-inwill beslight and will disappearwith con-
tinued use.

6. FromOFF position, turnthe gascontrolknob coun
terclockwise toIGNposition. Pushincontrol.
7. With the controlknob pushed in, pushinand re
lease the piezo ignitorbutton to light the pilot.
8. Continue pushing the controlknob in forafurther
60 secondsto prevent the flamedetectorfrom
shuttingoffthegaswhile theprobeis warmingup.
Releasethe controlknob.
9. Turn gascontrolknob counterclockwise to
the ON position.
10. Afterthe pilot hasbeen litforone minute,the burn-

greaterthan 30 PSI. Yourlocal
computerstore, hardwarestore,or
homecentermaycarrycom-
pressed airinacan,you canuse
avacuumcleanerinthe blow
position.If usingcompressedair
inacan,pleasefollowthedirec-
tionson the can, oryoucoulddam
age thepilot assembly.

Cleanthe pilotassemblyalso. Ayel-
lowtiponthepilotflame indicates
dust and dirt in the pilot assembly.
Thereisa smallpilotairinlet hole
about twoinchesfromwherethe pi-
lot flame comesout of the pilotas-
sembly(seeFigure34).Withthe
unitoff,lightlyblowairthroughthe
airinlethole. Youmayblowthrough

1. Removelogs.Locate the gas
valveassemblyand thermostat
sensing bulb.
2.Removethethermostatsensing
bulb out oftheplasticclip (see

be located to the lowerright front
side offireplace. Determine loca-
tion ofsensing bulb, but do not
mountsensing bulbuntilstep 5.If

cleanthearea. Removethe paper
backing fromthe adhesive onbackof

that the thermostat sensingbulbwill
be positioned verticallywith the capil-
