1.1 Scope of delivery
Please check the completeness of the delivery
once you have unpacked it. The scope of
delivery of the unit includes the following parts:

1.2 Brief description of the unit
The Portamess 911 Conductivity measures
conductivity, salinity, TDS and temperature in
the industrial, environmental, food and waste
water sectors.
The unit complies with the requirements of the
EMC Act and the NAMUR NE 21 recommenda‐
tions.
The unit’s degree of protection is IP 66
according to DIN EN 0470 Part 1.
Temperature compensation is provided auto‐
matically with a Pt 1000 temperature sensor, an
NTC 30 kΩ (automatic detection when switched
on) or by manual temperature specification.
Calibration can be done by direct input of the
cell constants, by calibration with calibration
solutions KCl 0.01 mol/l or 0.1 mol/l or with any
other calibration solution.
Uninterrupted operation of the unit for approx.
1000 hours is possible with 3 mignon batteries.
To save battery life, the unit automatically
switches off after 1 hours if it is not operated.

2.2 User qualification
WARNING!
Danger of injury with inadequately qualified personnel
The operator of the system / equipment is responsible for ensuring that the qualifications are
fulfilled.
If inadequately qualified personnel work on the unit or loiter in the hazard zone of the unit,
this could result in dangers that could cause serious injuries and material damage.
– All work on the unit should therefore only be conducted by qualified personnel.
–Unqualified personnel should be kept away from the hazard zone.
The pertinent accident prevention regulations, as well as all other generally acknowledged
safety regulations, must be adhered to.
Training Definition
Instructed personnel An instructed person is deemed to be a person who has been
instructed and, if required, trained in the tasks assigned to him and pos‐
sible dangers that could result from improper behaviour, as well as
having been instructed in the required protective equipment and protec‐
tive measures.
Trained user A trained user is a person who fulfils the requirements made of an
instructed person and who has also received additional training specific
to the system from the manufacturer or another authorised distribution
partner.
Trained, qualified per‐
sonnel
A trained, qualified employee is deemed to be a person who is able to
assess the tasks assigned to him and recognize possible hazards
based on his training, knowledge and experience, as well as knowledge
of pertinent regulations. A trained, qualified employee must be able to
perform the tasks assigned to him independently with the assistance of
drawing documentation and parts lists. The assessment of a person's
technical training can also be based on several years of work in the rel‐
evant field.

Training Definition
Electrical technician An electrical technician is able to complete work on electrical systems
and recognise and avoid possible dangers independently based on his
technical training and experience as well as knowledge of pertinent
standards and regulations. An electrical technician must be able to per‐
form the tasks assigned to him independently with the assistance of
drawing documentation, parts lists, terminal and circuit diagrams. The
electrical technician must be specifically trained for the working environ‐
ment in which the electrical technician is employed and be conversant
with the relevant standards and regulations.
Service The Service department refers to service technicians, who have
received proven training and have been authorised by the manufacturer
to work on the system.

3.3 Keypad
Key Function
‘ON/OFF’ Use the ‘ON/OFF’ key to switch the unit on or off. Once the unit has been
switched on, it automatically performs a self-test and checks which tempera‐
ture sensor is connected.
Note: You can also use
‘meas’ to switch on the unit. However, this only per‐
forms a short test and does not detect the temperature sensor. The unit
assumes the last temperature sensor detected.
‘meas’ ‘meas’ takes you from any function back to measuring mode.
In measuring mode, ‘meas’ displays the following parameters:
nCond measuring mode: Temperature compensation
ntdS measuring mode: TDS factor
‘cal’ ‘cal’ starts calibration.
⇩⇧ ⇩ and ⇧ let you select and change the parameters and select a mode.
‘cal’ + ‘ON/OFF’ When the unit is switched off, press ‘cal’ + ‘ON/OFF’ to activate configura‐
tion mode.
When pressing 2 keys in parallel, make sure that the key shown on the left
is pressed first.

4.1 Sensor connector
You can connect the following sensors to the
unit. LF 204 4-pin sensor with integrated NTC
30 kΩ temperature sensor.

The unit works with the temperature set manually if you have not connected a temperature sensor.

Set up the cell constant and temperature compensation before initial commissioning. The cell con‐
stant is printed on the sensor head or specified in the sensor’s technical data
The calibration and configuration data are permanently saved both when the unit is switched off and
when the batteries are removed (battery change).
The ‘ON/OFF’ key is used to switch to measuring mode. When the unit is switched on, it detects the
temperature sensor connected and performs a self-test:
nSimultaneous appearance of all display segments, measured value symbols etc.
nDisplay of the unit type 911.
nDisplay of the software version.
Note: The temperature sensor is only detected during switching-on using
‘ON/OFF’ .
Note: You can also use ‘meas’ to switch on the unit. However, this only performs a short test and
does not detect the temperature sensor. The unit assumes the last temperature sensor detected.

You can change the following basic settings of
the unit in the configuration:
nCond (conductivity), SAL (salinity) or tdS
(Total Dissolved Solids or evaporation res‐
idue)
nCalibration by input of the cell constants
(AutCal Off) or calibration with a calibration
solution (AutCal On)
nTemperature display °C or °F
To activate configuration, with the unit switched
off, press
‘CAL’ and then press ‘ON/OFF’ .
‘ConF’ : The menu items of the configuration
menu are processed one after the other.
Pressing ⇧ and ⇩ lets you change the settings
of the respective menu item.
‘CAL’ takes you to the next menu item, saving
the settings displayed.
‘meas’ lets you exit the configuration menu at
any time. The value last displayed and possibly
changed is not saved.
Use Function to select the measuring function
[Cond] (conductivity), SAL (salinity) or tdS
(Total Dissolved Solids or evaporation residue).
Automatic or manual calibration
Select whether you wish to adjust cells by
direct input of cell constants or by calibration
with a calibration solution and automatic drift
control. Factory default setting: Direct input of
the cell constant (AutCAL OFF)
AutCAL OFF
Direct input of the cell constants (AutCAL OFF)
from 0.010 cm–1 ... 199.9 cm–1. Factory default
setting 0.475 cm–1.
AutCAL ON
Automatic calibration (AutCAL On) with 0.1
molar KCl solution, 0.01 molar KCl solution or
input of the temperature-correct conductivity of
another known calibration solution.
Temperature display °C temp
The temperature can be displayed in either °C
or °F. Factory default setting: °C.

Calibration adapts the Portamess 911 Conductivity to the cell constant of the sensor. In general, it is
enough to enter the cell constants specified by the manufacturer of the sensor into the unit.

Parameter Explanation
Calibration solu‐
tions
Solutions for the calibration of conductivity measuring units are unbuffered
systems. Their conductivity values are not stable and are affected by low
contamination or dilution, e.g. drops of water adhering to the sensor.
Clean sensor Ensure that the sensor is clean before calibration. Use distilled water to
rinse out any residue. After this, we recommend drying the sensor and
rinsing it with the intended calibration solution.
Cell constant The cell constant is determined by the size and geometric arrangement of
the sensor. The cell constant is the core size of conductivity sensors. The
cell constant is virtually immutable. Clean sensor surfaces without insulating
coatings are a prerequisite for this. Regular calibration is therefore not gen‐
erally necessary
4-pin sensors With 4-pin sensors, the principle of separate current/voltage electrodes
means that the partial contamination of the sensor does not lead to meas‐
uring errors in practice. By contrast, sensors fully contaminated with insu‐
lating coatings cause the measurement to fail.
Sensor LF 204 The cell constant is given with a tolerance of 1.5 % for the conductivity
sensor LF 204. In calibration mode (AutCAL OFF), this cell constant is
entered into the Portamess 911 Conductivity and saved. Further calibration
with calibration solutions is not required.
6.1 Calibration by direct input of
the cell constants (AutCAL
OFF)

the last calibration is displayed. ‘meas’
lets you exit calibration again.

6.2 Calibration with 0.1 or 0.01
molar KCl solution (AutCAL
On)
It is essential that contamination of the calibra‐
tion solutions is avoided.
1. Use
‘CAL’ to access calibration. The
cell constant determined and/or set
during the last calibration is displayed.
‘meas’ lets you exit calibration again.
2. Select the calibration solution used
(CALSoL). A 0.1 and a 0.01 molar KCI
solution are available. Confirm the
appropriate solution with
‘CAL’ .
3. Immerse the clean and dry sensor in the
calibration solution.
4. Press
‘CAL’ to start calibration. Use
‘meas’ to interrupt calibration if you do
not wish to calibrate.
5. The temperature is displayed in the
lower line during calibration. Automatic
drift control checks the stability of the
conductivity and temperature. The hour‐
glass symbol flashes.
6. If the measured values are stable, the
correct tabular temperature value of the
KCI solution is displayed. The conduc‐
tivity measured value flashes.
7. Confirm with
‘CAL’ .

played for several seconds. The
unit then switches back to meas‐
uring mode.
6.3 Calibration with any calibra‐
tion solution (AutCAL ON)
It is essential that contamination of the calibra‐
tion solutions is avoided.
1. Use
‘CAL’ to access calibration. The
cell constant determined and/or set
during the last calibration is displayed.
‘meas’ lets you exit calibration again.
2. Select the calibration solution used
(CALSoL). A 0.1 and a 0.01 molar KCI
solution are available. Confirm the
appropriate solution with
‘CAL’ .
3. Immerse the clean and dry sensor in the
calibration solution.
4. Press
‘CAL’ to start calibration. Use
‘meas’ to interrupt calibration if you do
not wish to calibrate.
5. The temperature is displayed in the
lower line during calibration. Automatic
drift control checks the stability of the
conductivity and temperature. The hour‐
glass symbol flashes.
6. If the measured values are stable, the
correct tabular temperature value of the
KCI solution is displayed. The conduc‐
tivity measured value flashes.
7. Read off the conductivity value from the
table for your calibration solution aligned
to the measuring temperature displayed.
Use ⇧ and ⇩ to enter the correct tem‐
perature-based conductivity value in the
unit.
Confirm with ‘CAL’ .

‘meas’ moves you from all functions to meas‐
uring mode. In measuring mode, the main dis‐
play shows the measured variable selected in
the configuration, while the lower display shows
the temperature.
The set-up time of the sensor and the
temperature sensor is considerably
shorter if the sensor is first moved in
the buffer solution and then held calmly
to be read off. This then gives you
stable values more quickly.
Conductivity measurement (Cond)
The main display shows the conductivity
measured, while the secondary display
shows the temperature.
Temperature compensation
1. The measuring unit offers various tem‐
perature compensation options.
‘meas’
and ⇧ or ⇩ allow you to select and
adjust temperature compensation:
2. (tc OFF) no temperature compensation
3. (tc nLF) temperature compensation with
a non-linear characteristic curve in
accordance with EN 27888 or DIN
38404.8 for natural water and ultra-pure
water (reference temperature 25 °C).
The secondary display also shows tc.
4. (tc 0.01 ... 9.99 %/°C) temperature com‐
pensation with a linear characteristic
curve and parametrisable temperature
coefficients (reference temperature 25
°C). The secondary display also shows
‘tc’ .
5. INFORMATION: If you have selected
temperature compensation with a linear

only be exited or the non-linear function
selected if the temperature coefficient
has been set to 0.00.
Salinity measurement (SAL)
The main display shows the salinity
measured in ‰ (g/kg), while the secon‐
dary display shows the temperature.

TDS determination (TDS)
1. The main display shows the concentra‐
tion of the dissolved substances that
contribute to the conductivity of the solu‐
tion (TDS comparable with the evapora‐
tion residue) in mg/l, while the secon‐
dary display shows the temperature.

INFORMATION The TDS factor
depends on the composition of the
water being analysed and needs to be
determined for each type of water.
Manual temperature specification
The
‘man’ display signals that no tem‐
perature sensor is connected. The unit
works with the temperature value man‐
ually specified. ⇧ and ⇩ allow you to
change the temperature specification in
Cond measuring mode.

8 Troubleshooting and maintenance
8.1 Error messages
Error Description
Sensor problems An error message appears and the measured value display flashes if
problems occur with a sensor.
‘ERROR 1’ Problem with the sensor.
Possible causes:
Sensor faulty.
Sensor cable disconnected
Incorrect sensor connected
Incorrect cell constant entered
‘ERROR 3’ Problem with the temperature sensor
The temperature measured lies outside the ranges:
Conductivity:–20 °C ... +120 °C
nLF: 0 °C ... +120 °C
Salinity: 0 °C ... +30 °C
TDS: +10 °C ... +40 °C
Possible causes:
Temperature sensor faulty
Short circuit of the temperature sensor
Incorrect temperature sensor connected
When changing the temperature sensor (even with sensors with inte‐
grated temperature sensor), note that the type of temperature sensor
(Pt 1000/NTC 30 kΩ) is only detected when the unit is switched on
using ‘ON/OFF’ .
Calibration error messages
If errors occur during calibration or if the sensor data detected is out‐
side of the valid range, then an error message appears (ERROR 6,
ERROR 11).
