1 Introduction
RIDA
®
QUICK SCAN is a lateral flow test reader designed to evaluate the RIDA
®
QUICK tests
from R-Biopharm AG. Depending on the quick test and/or the device setting, quantitative or
qualitative results are achieved with a fast and precise scanning process.
The results are stored in the device and can be printed as required.
All results are stored with data such as time of measurement, date, operator, etc.
The mobile reader can be connected to a power supply or can also be operated with
batteries, while the USB interface allows it to be connected to a PC. This enables precise
measurement of mycotoxin concentrations in stationary laboratories and mobile applications.

2.1 Overview

2.2 Starting up
The RIDA
®
QUICK SCAN reader is ready to operate as soon as you unpack it.
Although the batteries are charged in the factory, they may have discharged if the device has
been stored for some time. This is not a defect in the device but is due to the physics of
batteries in general.
Note!
We recommend that you charge the batteries for at
least ten hours before using them in the device for the
first time.
To do this, connect the RIDA
®
QUICK SCAN to the
power supply using the supplied power unit and switch
on the device.
The same applies to the optional thermal printer.
CAUTION:
The printer and RIDA
®
QUICK SCAN have
different power units.
To switch on the reader, press the middle ENTER key (3) for around 1s. On the bottom of the
reader you will find a diagram of the keypad and the side connections for quick reference.
Switch the device off again by holding the ENTER key (3) depressed for slightly longer.
2.3 Making the necessary connections
Insert the supplied power unit (12V DC) into the connection (9) or, if you are using batteries,
switch on the device.
Caution
Do not use the power unit if you have inserted con-
ventional non-rechargeable batteries. The device is
equipped only for use with NiMH batteries.
The power unit comes with four adapters so that the device can be used with different power
sockets. Take the adapter for your country and attach it to the power unit.

Caution
Never insert one of the adapters into the power
socket without first attaching the power unit. This
could give you an electric shock if you touch the
contacts.
Press the adapter on to the power unit until it clicks into place. Make sure that the adapter is
properly attached by trying to push it out again. When you hear it click into place and it cannot
be moved any more, it is properly attached.
The optional components, thermal printer and barcode reader, are connected to the two IO
ports (6) and (7) on the side of the reader. Both devices can be connected at the same time
and can be plugged into either each of the ports. You will find more information about these
two components in Section 3.6.
On the bottom of the device you will find a diagram of the connections and the keypad.

2.4 Basics of operation
Operate the device and make selections with the ◄► and ▲▼ keys on the keypad (2). The
active selection field is always highlighted in black. Confirm your selection with the ENTER
key (3).
The arrow keys ◄► and ▲▼ on the display assist navigation. When these symbols or
"Enter" appear in the top or bottom line of the display, pressing these keys on the keypad
triggers an action. The ENTER button is marked with an on/off symbol.

QUICK SCAN reader
3.1 Switching the device on
To switch the device on, press the ENTER key (3) for around 1 second. The following start
menu is displayed and the device performs an internal test (Figure 3). After this short internal
test the Scan Mode is displayed (Figure 6).
The current status of the power supply is shown beside the battery symbol. "B" stands for
battery operation and "N" means that the device is connected to a mains power supply (the
batteries are being recharged). The batteries are recharged only when the device is switched
on.

Besides Scan Mode you can also choose between the following modes by pressing the ◄►
keys:
- Setup Mode: Basic device function settings
- Memory Mode: Display stored test measurements
- Calibration Mode: Check the Calibration of the reader
These modes are described in more detail below. The actually measured temperature is
shown on the display. The tests should be performed at room temperature.
3.2 Evaluate test strip (SCAN MODE)
The test strips are measured in Scan Mode. When you have switched on the reader you must
define or confirm the displayed parameters before you perform the first measurement.
To do this, select the individual entry fields with the cursor keys ▲▼ and then change the
parameters using the ◄► keys.

Then, use the ▼key to select "Start Scan" and press ENTER.
The display will now show the entry fields for the test batch. Compare the 8-digit "Batch nr
checksum" with the corresponding number on the test packaging to ensure that you are using
the right test batch. If the numbers do not match, enter the correct batch number (barcode)
manually or scan the barcode.
Two options are available to change the lot number, a manual method and a more convenient
and safe method via a 2 D barcode. The latter one is recommended.

enter, the relevant digits will be activated and ready for modification.
