1. Getting Started
Connecting the Machine
Confirm that the shape and the position of the connector are as shown in the il-
lustration.
1. Parallel Port
2. 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX (option)
Requirements
Requirements
Before using this machine, confirm that all the environmental and electrical re-
quirements have been met. Connect the machine to the host computer using the
parallel port, optional Network Interface Board Type 2000, or both.
Confirm that all the cables, connectors and electrical outlets necessary to connect
the machine to the host computer or network are present.
Reference
For more information on using the parallel port, see P.2 “Connecting the Ma-
chine to the Host Using the Parallel Cable”.
For more information on using a network, see P.2 “Network connections”.
Parallel cable requirements
Connect the machine to the host computer using a parallel port. This machine
does not provide the parallel cable to connect the machine to the host computer.

The machine's parallel interface is a standard bi-directional interface. It requires
a standard 36-pin parallel cable compliant with IEEE 1284 and a parallel port
available on the host computer.
Note
❒Do not use a parallel cable longer than 3 meters (10 feet).
Network connections
Optional Network Interface Board Type 2000 can be installed to allow direct
connection to an Ethernet network.
Network Interface Board supports 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX connections.
You can use the machine in the following network environments:
• Using the appropriate network management software and printer driver.
• Attaching the machine to a network computer set up as a server.
*1 Under Windows NT 4.0, only x86 based CPU is supported.
In a mixed network environment, the protocol switches automatically.

Note
❒Consult your network administrator before connecting the machine to a net-
work.
❒Network Interface Board Type 2000 does not support AppleTalk.
Important
❒Rating voltage of the 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX connector; Max. DC 5V.
Connecting the Machine to the Host Using the Parallel Cable
Connect the machine to the host computer using a parallel cable compliant with
IEEE 1284 (supplied by you).
Follow these steps to connect the machine to the host computer:
AConfirm that you have the correct cable.
Client Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0 *1
Driver PCL 6, PCL 5e
File Server NetWare 3.x, NetWare 4.x
Protocol IPX/SPX, TCP/IP

BConfirm that both the machine and the host computer are turned off.
CPlug the 36-pin end of the parallel cable into the parallel port at the right
side of the back cover of the machine.
Reference
See P.1 “Getting Started” to be sure of the position of the parallel port.
Important
❒Rating voltage of the parallel interface connector for the computer; Max.
DC 5V.
DSqueeze the wire clips on each side of the connector together until they
snap into place. The clips should hold the cable securely in place.
EPlug the other end of the parallel cable into the computer's parallel port.
Connecting the Machine Using Network Interface Board Type 2000
Connect the machine to the network using Network Interface Board Type 2000.
Follow these steps to connect the machine.
AConfirm that you have the correct cable.
Note
❒In the case of a 100BASE-TX environment, properly shielded and ground-
ed cable (STP) and connectors must be used for connections to the host
computer (and/or peripheral) in order to meet FCC and EMC Directive
89/336/EEC emission limits.
BConfirm that the machine is turned off.
CLoop the network interface cable. The loop should be about 15 cm (6”) from
the end of the cable on the end closest to the machine.
DAttach the ferrite core to the loop.

EAttach the network interface cable to the 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX port on
the machine.

See P.1 “Getting Started” to be sure of the position of the 10BASE-T/
100BASE-TX port.
Note
❒Confirm that the cable is connected to the 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX port.
❒Do not connect the cable to the Fax port.
Important
❒Rating voltage of the 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX connector; Max. DC 5V.
FConnect the other end of the cable to the network.
Indicators on Network Interface Board
1. Indicator (green)
Staying on or blinking shows the operat-
ing condition of Network Interface
Board.

directly to a computer.

PCL printer drivers
Printer drivers allow the computer to communicate with the printer via a
printer language. Two kinds of PCL printer drivers, PCL 6 and PCL 5e, are
included in the CD-ROM that comes with this printer option. We recommend
PCL 6 as your first choice. However, some of your applications might require
the installation of the PCL 5e printer driver. In this case, you can install PCL
5e in addition to PCL 6.

Panel Display
The panel display shows operational status, error messages and function menus.
Press {

}to change the printer mode.
Important
❒Do not apply a strong shock or a force of about 30 N (about 3 kgf) or more to
the panel display. Otherwise the display might be damaged.
❒Pressing any operation key while the Data In indicator is on may cause data
in the printer to be lost.

Basic key Operations
The following table describes basic key operations.
Online and Offline
Online
When the printer is online, it can receive data from the computer.

Loading Paper in the Bypass Tray
This section describes how to load paper in the bypass tray, and also describes
the type, size and feed direction of paper that can be loaded on the bypass tray.

For more information on the type, size, feed direction and maximum amount
of paper that can be loaded into other paper trays in this machine, See the Fac-
simile Operator's Manual.

❒Only one sheet of paper can be acceptable to load paper in the bypass tray.

FOpen the Bypass Tray.
GSlide and adjust the side guides to fit the paper, and load paper until it
stops with the print side down.
Note
❒Confirm that paper feed direction of the paper has the short edge of the pa-
per entering the machine first.
❒When the paper size is lager than A4 or 81/2''×11'', support the paper until
it is fed into the machine.
Setting the custom paper size for the Bypass Tray
Note
❒Custom paper size is supported only when the paper is loaded from the by-
pass tray.
❒PCL 5e does not support custom paper size.
This table shows the paper size and custom paper size which you can load in the
bypass tray.

Paper Recommendations
Note the following suggestions when handling or selecting paper used with this
printer.
Paper weight
Loading paper
• Use only the recommended paper types. Print quality cannot be guaranteed
if other paper types are used.
• Do not use paper that is already printed on.
• If you load paper into the paper tray, be sure not to stack over the limit mark.
• If you load paper onto Bypass Tray, confirm that paper fits under the side
guides.
• If you load paper into the paper tray, confirm that the print side is facing up.
• If you load paper onto Bypass Tray, confirm that the print side is facing down.
Supported paper weight
Tray 1 ~ Tray 3 60 - 90 g/m2(16 - 24 lb)
Bypass Tray 60 - 162 g/m2(16 - 42 lb)

Storing paper
Paper should always be stored properly. Improperly stored paper might result
in poor print quality, paper misfeeds or printer damage.
Recommendations are as follows:
• Avoid storing paper in humid areas.
• Avoid exposing paper to direct sunlight.
• Store on a flat surface.
• Keep open reams of paper in the package in which the paper came.
Types of paper and other media
❖
Plain paper
• If you print on paper heavier than 90 g/m2(24 lb), use the bypass tray. The
bypass tray can hold paper up to 162 g/m2(42 lb) in weight.
• If you load paper heavier than 155 g/m2(41 lb) onto the bypass tray, set
the printer to Thick Paper mode using the operation panel. ⇒P.47 “Using
the Operation Panel”
• If paper is curled or bent, correct it before loading.

OHP Transparencies
• Load only one OHP transparency at a time onto the bypass tray.
• When loading OHP transparencies onto the bypass tray, set the printer to
Thick Paper mode using the operation panel. ⇒P.47 “Using the Operation
Panel”
• Be careful not to touch the print side of the OHP transparencies. Other-
wise, the print side gets dirty or damaged, and results in poor print quality.
• When printing on an OHP transparency that has a print side, load it facing
down onto the bypass tray.

Translucent paper
• Load only a piece of translucent paper at a time onto the bypass tray.
• When printing on translucent paper that has a print side, load it facing
down onto the bypass tray.
❖
Adhesive labels
• Load only one adhesive label at a time onto the bypass tray.
• Use adhesive labels in which the whole side can be printed on.
• Avoid using adhesive labels having exposed glue.
• If the print side is coated, print quality might be reduced, as the toner
might not fuse well.
