1 Preface
This chapter provides safety-related information, an overview of the user documenta-
tion and the conventions used in the documentation.
1.1 Documentation Overview
This section provides an overview of the R&S ZNA user documentation. Unless speci-
fied otherwise, you find the documents on the R&S ZNA product page at:

1.1.1 Getting Started Manual
Introduces the R&S ZNA and describes how to set up and start working with the prod-
uct. Includes basic operations, typical measurement examples, and general informa-
tion, e.g. safety instructions, etc.
A printed version is delivered with the instrument. A PDF version is available for down-
load on the Internet.
1.1.2 User Manual and Help
The user manual contains the description of all instrument modes and functions. It also
provides an introduction to remote control, a complete description of the remote control
commands with programming examples, and information on maintenance, instrument
interfaces and error messages. Includes the contents of the getting started manual.
The contents of the user manual are available as help in the R&S ZNA. The help offers
quick, context-sensitive access to the complete information for the instrument and its
firmware.
The user manual is also available for download or for immediate display on the Inter-
net.
1.1.3 Service Manual
Describes the performance test for checking the rated specifications, module replace-
ment and repair, firmware update, troubleshooting and fault elimination, and contains
mechanical drawings and spare part lists.

1.1.4 Instrument Security Procedures
Deals with security issues when working with the R&S ZNA in secure areas. It is avail-
able for download on the Internet.
1.1.5 Basic Safety Instructions
Contains safety instructions, operating conditions and further important information.
The printed document is delivered with the instrument.
1.1.6 Data Sheets and Brochures
The data sheet contains the technical specifications of the R&S ZNA. It also lists the
firmware applications and their order numbers, and optional accessories.
The brochure provides an overview of the instrument and deals with the specific char-
acteristics.

1.1.7 Release Notes and Open Source Acknowledgment (OSA)
The release notes list new features, improvements and known issues of the current
firmware version, and describe the firmware installation.
The open-source acknowledgment document provides verbatim license texts of the

Convention Description
[Keys] Key and knob names are enclosed by square brackets.
This also applies to the virtual keys in the control window of the
R&S ZNA.
"Graphical user interface ele-
ments"
All names of graphical user interface elements on the screen, such as
dialog boxes, menus, options, buttons, and softkeys are enclosed by
quotation marks.
File names, commands,
program code
File names, commands, coding samples and screen output are distin-
guished by their font.
Input Input to be entered by the user is displayed in italics.
Links Links that you can click are displayed in blue font.
"References" References to other parts of the documentation are enclosed by quota-
tion marks.
1.2.2 Conventions for Procedure Descriptions
When operating the instrument, several alternative methods may be available to per-
form the same task. In this case, the procedure using the touchscreen is described.
Any elements that can be activated by touching can also be clicked using an addition-
ally connected mouse. The alternative procedure using the keys on the instrument or
the on-screen keyboard is only described if it deviates from the standard operating pro-
cedures.
The term "select" may refer to any of the described methods, i.e. using a finger on the
touchscreen, a mouse pointer in the display, or a key on the instrument or on a key-
board.
1.2.3 Notes on Screenshots
When describing the functions of the product, we use sample screenshots. These
screenshots are meant to illustrate as many as possible of the provided functions and
possible interdependencies between parameters. The shown values may not represent
realistic usage scenarios.
The screenshots usually show a fully equipped product, that is: with all options instal-
led. Thus, some functions shown in the screenshots may not be available in your par-
ticular product configuration.

The product documentation helps you use the R&S ZNA safely and efficiently. Follow
the instructions provided here and in the printed "Basic Safety Instructions". Keep the
product documentation nearby and offer it to other users.
Intended use
The R&S ZNA is intended for the development, production and verification of electronic
components and devices in industrial, administrative, and laboratory environments.
Use the R&S ZNA only for its designated purpose. Observe the operating conditions
and performance limits stated in the data sheet.
Where do I find safety information?
Safety information is part of the product documentation. It warns you about the poten-
tial dangers and gives instructions how to prevent personal injuries or damage caused
by dangerous situations. Safety information is provided as follows:
●The printed "Basic Safety Instructions" provide safety information in many lan-
guages and are delivered with the R&S ZNA.
●Throughout the documentation, safety instructions are provided when you need to
take care during setup or operation.

This document describes version 2.15 of the R&S ZNA firmware. Compared to the pre-
vious version 2.15, firmware version 2.20 provides the following changes:
New functionality
●Support for new instrument models:
–R&S® ZNA50, 10 MHz to 50 GHz, 2 test ports 2.4 mm
–R&S® ZNA50, 10 MHz to 50 GHz, 4 test ports 2.4 mm
–R&S® ZNA67, 10 MHz to 67 GHz, 2 test ports 1.85 mm
–R&S® ZNA67, 10 MHz to 67 GHz, 4 test ports 1.85 mm
●New hardware option R&S ZNAxx-B302: low noise preamplifier for port 2 of a
R&S ZNAxx, up to 30 dB power gain at receiver side.
Only available for R&S ZNA26 and R&S ZNA43. Requires hardware option
R&S ZNAxx-B32 (receiver step attenuator at port 2).

●New hardware option R&S ZNAxx-B501: spur magnitude reduction for enhanced
spectral purity at port 1 of a R&S ZNAxx
Only available for R&S ZNA26 and R&S ZNA43. Requires hardware option
R&S ZNAxx-B31 (receiver step attenuator at port 1).

Solved issues
●MATLAB® failed to import trace data files that were exported by the R&S ZNA firm-
ware, if, during Matlab export, a field separator other than "Comma" was used.
●User characterization of R&S ZN-Z154 did not work
●Logarithmic interpolation of limit lines did not work for linear sweeps
●Missing space between cal label and power cal label in trace info
●Firmware versions 3.x created incompatible *.calkit files
(*.calkit files containing snp data could not be used with other Rohde&Schwarz
VNAs)
●Installation of R&S ZNA firmware simulation failed if R&S ZVA/B/T firmware simula-
tion was installed on the same PC
●Limit line check: PASS/FAIL info field disappeared when diagram was maximized
●Fixed an issue with handling multiple Line standards in TRL calibration
●For segmented sweeps, markers could not be positioned between sweep seg-
ments
●Frequency-converting IMD measurements: for certain frequency setups, the firm-
ware erroneously displayed an error message during power calibration with a
power meter
●"DUT Centric Wizard": finishing the wizard with both "Create New Setup" and "Cali-
brate Newly Created Channels" selected, caused errors
●R&S ZNA-B26: hardware pre-correction for spectrum analysis mode
●True differential mode with a combination of balanced and single ended ports:
sporadic timing problems
●Internal pulse generator: under certain conditions, the master pulse period was not
set correctly
●CALCulate<Chn>:MARKer<Mk>:FUNCtion:DOMain:USER:SHOW ON did not
switch on range limit lines
●Remote command CALCulate<Ch>:PARameter:SDEFine <TraceName>,
<Result> did accept invalid <Result> parameters
●Entering the "Power Cal Settings" softtool changed the "Power Cal Method" to
"Ref. Receiver Only"
●Command SENSe<Ch>:SWEep:TYPE POINt did not always switch from segmen-
ted to CW sweep mode
●Fixed an issue with reusing reference receiver calibrations in subsequent calibra-
tions
●A positive/negative ALC offset ("Start Value: Offset") decreased/increased the start
power
Note that the offset direction has been reversed.
●The "Pulse Modulation" dialog did not always preserve settings
●"More Wave Quantities" dialog: if an external generator was selected as "External
Source", also the "Source Port" had to be set to "None"
●"Mixer Params" > "More Relfection & Feedthru" did not create correct feedthrough
measurements

●Settings in the "Cal Power Setting" tab of the calibration setup dialog were not
applied to calibration units
●STATus:QUEStionable:INTegrity:HARDware:CONDition did not reflect
"overload" condition (status register bit 3 was not set correctly)
●After firmware startup, the internal combiner configuration was not set immediately
●Wrong L3 parameter for male Short standard of CalKit R&S ZN-Z135 typical
