About this manual
This man al covers the installation, config ration, and the operation of the
M ltiStation series switches. The installation consists of installing and
config ring the nit, connecting the comp ter, and connecting the KVM
stations.
Introduction
Thank yo for choosing Rose Electronics
®
M ltiStation™ for yo r m lti- ser
application. Yo r new M ltiStation is designed for a lifetime of tro ble free
operation. It will streamline yo comp ter access by allowing a single
comp ter to be accessed by m ltiple ser workstations on a first come, first
serve basis.
The M ltiStation sharing feat re doesn't req ire any keyboard commands to
se, b t access can be controlled and there are special command feat res for
special f nctions. The nit can also split the video signal allowing the same
screen to be displayed on all monitors at the same time, or the video can be
sec rely displayed on a single monitor.
M ltiStation is easy to install. Yo simply connect yo r comp ter and KVM
stations to the appropriate M ltiStation ports sing the UltraCable. That’s
really all there is to it, sharing is a tomatic. The stat s LEDs on the front
panel flash once a second to indicate KVM to KVM comm nication is active.
Any activity of the keyboard and mo se will also ca se the LEDs to flash.

This man al describes all three models of M ltiStation nits. The feat res
and commands are identical for the three models. Please disregard the
diagrams and text that do not apply to yo r model. To acq aint yo with yo r
M ltiStation nit, this man al first describes M ltiStation’s front and rear
panels. Installation and operation instr ctions show easy to nderstand
diagrams that ill strates how to connect M ltiStation to yo r comp ter,
keyboards, video monitors, and mice.
Package contents
The M ltiStation package for models ML-2U and ML-4U incl des the
M ltiStation nit, a power transformer, and this installation and operation
man al.
The package for model MLK-2U incl des the M ltiStation local nit, a remote
nit, 2 power transformers, and this installation and operation man al.
Note: Cables are ordered separately. See Appendix C. Cables and rack
mo nts.
Cable req irements
M ltiStation connects to a comp ter with a comp ter (CPU) adapter cable
and to each keyboard, video monitor, and mo se with a Keyboard-Video-
Mo se (KVM) adapter cable. These cables are most commonly p rchased
with the M ltiStation and will provide q ick and tro ble-free operation.
Appendix C lists the most common cables.
A distance of p to 100 feet from the CPU or KVM ports is s pported with o r
extended distance cabling. To reach even longer distances or for special
applications o r ViewLink™ prod ct can be sed to reach a distance of p to
250 feet.
The MLK-2U distrib ted nits can have a distance of as m ch as 250’
between them. Yo will need the proper cable to interconnect the nits.

Installation procedure
Step 1. Connecting the keyboards, monitors, and mice
The Keyboard-Video-Mo se adapter cable connects one keyboard, one video
monitor, and one mo se to the M ltiStation. Cables will vary depending pon
the connector type on yo r keyboard and whether yo are sing a PS/2 or
serial mo se. Yo sho ld have the correct cable to match yo r eq ipment’s
connectors. These cables are available where yo p rchased yo r
M ltiStation.
1.1 Connect the KVM adapter cable’s DB-25M connector to the
DB-25F connector labeled “KVM1” on the M ltiStation front panel.
1.2 Connect the keyboard, mo se, and monitor cables to the corresponding
connectors on the KVM adapter cable.
1.3 Repeat 1.1 and 1.2 for other KVM station(s)

Step 2. Connecting the computer
A CPU adapter cable connects yo r comp ter to the M ltiStation. The cable
type will vary depending on the comp ter’s keyboard and mo se connectors.
2.1 Connect the CPU adapter cable’s DB-25M connector to the DB-25F
connector labeled CPU on the M ltiStation front panel.
2.2 Connect the keyboard, mo se, and monitor connectors on the CPU
adapter cable to the corresponding ports on the comp ter.

Step 3. Connecting the bus cable (model MLK-2U only)
Step #3 applies to M ltiStation model MLK-2U only. If yo r model is model
ML-2U or ML-4U, skip this step. The b s cable (13W3M / 13W3M) connects
between the local M ltiStation and the remote nit.
3.1 Connect one end of the b s cable to the local nit’s “BUS OUT” 13W3F
connector.
3.2 Connect the other end of the b s cable to the remote nit’s “BUS IN”
13W3F connector.

WARNING:
Avoid ro ting all cables near fl orescent lights, air
conditioning compressors, or machinery that may
create electrical interference.
For the best q ality video, se coax cable when the
cable length exceeds 20 feet.

Step 4. Powering up the system
4.1 Connect the provided power adapter(s) to the power connector on the
rear panel of M ltiStation and to a power strip or wall o tlet. Model
MLK-2U req ires two power adapters, one for the local nit and one for
the remote nit.
4.2 T rn on all KVM video monitors.
4.3 P sh the ON/Off switch on the rear panel to t rn on the nit. Upon
power- p the yellow stat s LED(s) will light briefly, and then flash at one
second intervals indicating internal comm nication is established and the
system is active.
4.4 Boot- p the comp ter. Yo sho ld see the boot- p seq ence on all KVM
station monitors. If yo r comp ter was connected with power applied, yo
do not have to re-boot the comp ter. M ltiStation em lates all keyboard
and mo se f nctions for a tomatic boot- p. Yo may need to iss e the
mode-command or reset command to have proper keyboard and mo se
comm nications. (See Table 8 for the proper command seq ence)
Step 5. Testing the system
5.1 With all cabling in place and power applied to all eq ipment, all the KVM
video monitors sho ld show the comp ters video. The defa lt setting
allows access to the comp ter from any KVM station.
5.1.1 From KVM station #1, verify that the keyboard and mo se
f nctions properly
5.1.2 Verify keyboard and mo se f nctionality on all KVM stations.
5.2 There is a 2 second timeo t defa lt setting that inhibits the other KVM

has no keyboard or mo se activity for 2 seconds, another KVM station
can gain control. Wait at least 2 seconds before verifying the other KVM
stations.
NOTE: Before entering any M ltiStation keyboard commands,
first press the right control key, then within 2 seconds,
enter the command. Example: Reset command – press
and release the right control key, then within 2 seconds,
press the “R” key.
Use only the n meric keys located above the keyboard
when entering n meric commands. The n meric
keypad is not recognized for valid n meric entries.

Dip Switch Settings
The front panel dip switch enables or disables commands from each KVM
station. To enable commands from a KVM station p t the corresponding dip
switch in the p position. To disable commands, p t the switch in the down
position. The dip switch on the right controls KVM #1, the next switch controls
KVM #2, and so on. The below table shows the dip switch config ration and
each settings f nction.
