Makesuretherearenobatteriesinstalledinthe
compartment.
PlugthejackoftheAC-DCadapterintothesocketof
theSmartCharger.ThenplugtheAC-DCadapterintoa
wallsocket(seeKEYSANDFEATURES).
Openthelidbypressingthebuttonthatisinfrontofthe
lid.
Pullbackoneofthemetalcontactplatesandinsertyour
1.2V Ni-CdorNi-MH(AAA,AA,CorD size)batteryinto
aslot,makingsurethatthebatteryisplacedsothatthe
"+" symbolonthebatteryisinthesamepositionasthe
"+" symbolinsidethecompartment.Ifyouwishto
rechargea 1.2Vprismaticbattery instead, firstinsertthe
prismaticadapterintotheslot(seesection 1.2). Then
insertthe1.2Vprismaticbattery.Again,makesurethat
thepositionof the"+" symbolonthebatterymatches
withthatof the"+" symbolinsidethecompartment.
ClosethelidandwatchtheLCDastheSmartCharger
evaluatesyourbatterytotestitsrechargingneeds.
Chargingwillthenbeginautomatically.Ifthebatteryis
notsuitableforrecharging,theBadBatterysymbol$
willappearontheLCD.Openthelid,removethebad
batteryandthentryanotherbattery!
Ifyouareina hurrytousethebatteryyouarecharging,
youmayremoveanduseitassoonasyouseethe Top-
Off/Trickle ChargeiconsontheLCDeventhough,
during Top-Off Chargemode,thebatterymayonlybe
80%-90% recharged. Otherwise, youcanwaituntilthe
batteryisfullyrechargedbylookingoutfortheCharged
Batterysymbol ^. Eitherway,yourbatterywillbeready
touse,witha newleaseonlife!

Note: It is recommended that you test only one battery at a time in
order to gain an accurate representation ofeach individual battery's
voltage and level ofenergy left as displayed by the Energy bars.

Makesuretherearenobatteriesinthe
SmartChargerbeforeyoubegin.Thenplugthe
adapterjackintotheadaptersocketofthe
SmartChargerandplugtheAC-DCadapterinto
awalloutlet.TheSmartChargerwillperforma
shortselftest.TheLoadingsymbolwillflashtoindicatethatthe
SmartChargerisreadytouse.
Important: Inspectyourbatteries carefullybefore
attempting to recharge them. Do notinsertbatteries thatare
rusty, corroded, leaking ordamaged. Remember toinsert A//-
Cd/Ni-MH type batteries only.
1.2InsertingtheBatteries
Insertuptotwoprismaticbatteriesorup
tofourAAA,AA,C,orD batteriesintotheslots,
matchingthe "+" signonthebatterywiththe
"+"symbol insidethecompartment.The
batteriesinsertedmustbeofthesametypeand
capacity.Thenclosethelid(theSmartCharger
willnotbegincharginguntilthelidisclosed).
TheLoadingsymbolwilldisappearandtheSmartChargerwill
beginanalyzingthebatteries.TheBatteryAnalyzersymbolwill
cycleduringthistimeandtheoutlineoftheEnergysymbolwilllight
up.Ifthebatteryisfoundtobeunsuitableforrecharging,theBad
Batterysymbolwillappear,andyoushouldremovethebattery.
Warning: Inserting batteries of a different size, brand,
capacity or type may lead to overcharging or a reduction in
the battery's maximum capacity. Make sure that the batteries
inserted are of the same size, brand, type, and capacity. The

thedischargingcurrenttosuitthenumberofbatteriesandthe
variousenergylevelsofthebatteriestoensurea steadyand
speedydischargingeffect.Thisisthe SmartCharger^ Intelligent
DischargeSystem(IDS)atwork!Youwillbeabletotellthatthe
SmartChargerhasenteredthisfunctionbecausetheIDSsymbol
willlightupandtheuppertriangleofthesymbolwillflash.The
outlineoftheEnergysymbolwillalsoappearatthistimeandthe
energybarswillcyclethrough,fromtoptobottom.The
SmartChargerwillthenautomaticallybegintochargethebatteryin
Soft-Startmode(see1.3below).
YoucanalsoforcetheSmartChargertoskiptheIDSphase
andenterSoft-StartdirectlybypressingtheIDSkey.However,
youshouldnotethatrepeatedlyoverridingthisfunctionmayleadto
increasedmemoryeffect(whichwillultimatelyreducethebattery's
maximumcapacity)andincreasedgenerationofdamagingheat
duringrecharging,which,inturn,willreduceperformanceand
batterylife.
Conversely,youcanalsoforcetheSmartChargertoenter
theIDSfunctionbypressingandholdingtheIDSkeyforaround
threesecondsduringSoft-Startmode.

see 1.6 below.
1.3ChargingBegins
TheSmartChargerwillbegin
rechargingthe1.2V Ni-Cd/Ni-MH batteryby
progressingautomaticallythroughthefollowingprocesses:
Soft-StartCharging:TheSmartChargermayenterSoft-
StartChargingdirectly,oraftertheIDSfunctionhastakenplace.
Thismethodofchargingwillensurethatthebatterydoesnotheat
upduringrecharging.TheSmartChargerwillcarefullyanalyzethe
battery,andpre-chargethebatterytoa suitablelevelbeforeFast
Chargingbegins.DuringSoft-StartCharging,theSoft-Start
symbolwilllightupandtheinnersegmentofthesymbolwillflash,
whilethebarsoftheEnergysymbollightupina sequencethat
convergesinthemiddle.
FastCharging:TheSmartCharger
willenterFastChargemodeafterSoft-Start
Charginghastakenplace.Thissuperhigh-
speedchargingreplenishesupto80-90%of
thebattery'soriginalcapacity.Duringthis
process,theFastChargesymbolwilllightupandtheFASTicon
insidethesymbolwillflash.TheFastChargingcurrentvaries
accordingtothequalityofthebattery.DuringFastCharging,the
barswithintheEnergysymbolwillcyclefrombottom
to top.Top-OffCharging:Thistypeofcharging
topsuptheremaining10-20%ofthebattery's
capacityafterFastCharginghastakenplace.The
SmartChargerwillthenenterTrickleChargemode
(seebelow).DuringTop-OffCharging,the Top-Off/
TrickleChargesymbolwilllightupwhilethe Top-Off/
TrickleChargeiconsofthesymbolwillflash.The
bottomfourenergybarsoftheEnergysymbolwill
alsolightup,andthetopenergybarwillflash.
TrickleCharging:Thismodeofchargingappliesa very
lowcurrenttomaintainthebatteryatitsmaximumcapacityuntil
youarereadytouseit.Itdoesthisbyreplenishingtheinternal

leakageofthefullychargedbattery.SinceTrickle
Chargemodemaintainsthereplenishedstateofthe
battery,itisrecommendedthatyoukeepthebattery
inthecharger(inTrickleChargemode)untilyouare
readytouseit.IntheTrickleChargemode,allof
theenergybarswilllightup,theChargedBattery
symbolwillappearandtheTop-Off/TrickleCharge
iconsofthesymbolwillflash.Theunitwillstayin
TrickleChargemodeuntilyouopenthelid.
Thechargingtimerequireddependsonthetype,brand,
size,capacityandconditionofthebattery(forexample,badquality
batteriestakelongertorecharge).Thetimecanvaryanywhere
betweenseveralminutesandmanyhours.YourSmartChargerwill
takeasmuchtimeasnecessarytorechargeyourbatteries
properlyandsafely.Seethetablebelowforanapproximate
indicationofchargingtimes:
Theabovechargingtimesarefora typicalbatteryandfor
generalreferenceonly.TheApproximateChargingTimeexcludes
Top-OffandTrickleChargetime.
1.4 Checking 1.2V Ni-Cd/Ni-MHBatteries
Openthelidandplaceone1.2VNi-Cd/Ni-MHbatteryintoa
batteryslot.PressANALYZE.TheSmartChargerwilltakejusta
fewsecondstoevaluatetheconditionofyourbattery,duringwhich
timetheBatteryAnalyzersymbolwillcycleandtheoutlineofthe
Energysymbolwilllightup.The battery's voltageandenergy
remainingwillthenbedisplayedontheLCD(thegreaterthe
numberofenergybarsdisplayedmeansthehigherthelevelof
energyleft).Ifthebatteryisnotsuitableforrecharging,theBad
Batterysymbolwillappear,inwhichcaseyoushouldremovethe
batteryanddisposeofit.
Important: Analyzing the battery depletes the battery's
energy, which is why increasingly less energy will be dis-
played on the LCD every time you re-analyze the same battery.
Note: The level ofenergy left shown is based on a
normal, fully charged battery. If the battery being analyzed
has not been fully charged before being discharged, it may
not be possible to accurately indicate the current energy.
1.5 Revitalising1.2VNi-Cd/Ni-MHBatteries
Certainbrandsofbattery,newbatteriesorbatteriesthat
Q...CanI usethebatteriesbeforeTop-Off
Chargingfinishes?Yes.Youmayremovebatteries
fromtheSmartChargerwhileitisinTop-OffCharging
mode.However,thebatterymayhaveonlyreached
around 85%-90% ofitstotalenergylevel.Top-Off
chargingadds 10%-15% tothebatterycapacity.

havebeenstoredfora longtimemaynotbeimmediatelysuitable
forFastChargingandyoumayencounterthe"Premature"(i.e.
batteryisnotchargedtomorethan60%ofitsratedcapacityeven
thoughthechargersignalsitsfullycharged).Inthiscase,you
shouldallowthebatterytoundergoa numberof "Premature"
chargingandrechargingcyclestohelprevitalisethebatteries.The
guidelinesbelowmayhelptorevitaliseyourbatteriessothatyou
mayeventuallybeabletoFastChargethem:
a.Startbychargingthreetofourofthesetypeofbatteries-
withthesamecapacity,size,typeandbrand- together,
allowingthebatteriestoundergoseveralcharging
anddischargingcyclesbeforetryingtoFastCharge
eachbatteryseparately.
OR
b.Chargeoneofthesetypeofbatteriesonitsownand
allowtheSmartChargertotrytorevitalisethebatteryby
runningthroughseveralcharginganddischarging
cycles.
Important: If the Premature Full condition still exists
afterseveral charging and discharging cycles, the batteries
are not suitable for Fast Charging one at a time and should
always be recharged together in packs of three or four.
1.6 9VBatteryCharging
Insertthe9V (6F22/1604) batteryintotheslotasshownin
thediagramintheKEYSANDFEATURESSection.Makesure
thatthe "+" signofthebatterymatches the"+" oftheslotandthe
batteryisclippedfirmlyintheslot.
The"9VCharging"LEDwillflashonandoff.Closethelid.
Whentheeight-hourmaximumchargingtimehasbeenreached,
theLEDwillstopflashingbutwillremainlit.
Youcanalsorecharge 1.2V batteriesatthesametimeas
your9Vbattery,andmayopenthelidtoretrieveyourrecharged
9Vbatterywhilea 1.2V batteryisinTop-OffChargemode.
1.7BadBatterySymbolAppears? Here's Why!
Ifa 1.2VNi-Cd/Ni-MHbatteryisnotsuitableforrecharging,
theSmartChargerwillautomaticallysensethis,eitherimmediately
orduringrecharging.TheBadBatterysymbolwillthenappearon
theLCD,inwhichcase,youshouldremovethedefectivebattery
anddisposeofit.
1.8RechargingisComplete!
Whena 1.2VNi-Cd/Ni-MHbatteryisfullyrecharged,allof
theenergybarswithintheEnergysymbolwilllightup,theCharged
Batterysymbolwillappearandtheiconsofthe Top-Off/Trickle
Chargesymbolwillflash.TheunitwillremaininTrickleCharge
modeuntilyouopenthelid.Simplyremovethebatteryfromthe
unitanditisreadytouse!Ifyouarenotyetreadytousethe
battery,itisrecommendedthatyouleaveitintheunitwithout
openingthelidandwithoutdisconnectingtheAC-DCadapter.The
SmartChargerwillcontinuetoapplyTrickleChargetomaintainthe
replenishedstateofthebatteryuntilyouarereadytouseit.
1.9BatteriesOut,PowerDown
Toturnoffthepower,removeallbatteriesfromtheunit.
Unplugtheadapterfromthewallsocketfirstandthenfrom
SmartCharger.

Theamountofenergyleftinthebatteryanditsvoltagewillbe
displayedontheLCD.Thelevelofenergyremaininginthebattery

symbol(see 1.4). IftheSmartChargerdetectsthatthebatteryis
unsuitableforrecharging,theBadBatterysymbolwillappear,in
whichcaseyoushouldremovethebatteryanddisposeofit.
