Ensure that any mobile phones or related equipment installed in your vehicle are
securely mounted. Avoid placing your phone and accessories near or in an air bag
deployment area. Improperly installed wireless equipment can cause serious injury
when air bags inflate rapidly.
Handle and dispose of batteries and chargers with care
zUse only Samsung-approved batteries and chargers specifically designed for
your phone. Incompatible batteries and chargers can cause serious injuries
or damage to your phone.
zNever dispose of batteries or phones in a fire. Follow all local regulations

zNever place batteries or phones on or in heating devices, such as microwave
ovens, stoves, or radiators. Batteries may explode when overheated.
zNever crush or puncture the battery. Avoid exposing the battery to high
external pressure, which can lead to an internal short circuit and overheating.
Avoid interference with pacemakers
Maintain a minimum of 15 cm (6 inches) between mobile phones and pacemakers to
avoid potential interference, as recommended by manufacturers and the
independent research group, Wireless Technology Research. If you have any reason
to suspect that your phone is interfering with a pacemaker or other medical device,
turn off the phone immediately and contact the manufacturer of the pacemaker or
medical device for guidance.
Turn off the phone in potentially explosive environments
Do not use your phone at refuelling points (service stations) or near fuels or
chemicals. Turn off your phone whenever directed by warning signs or instructions.
Your phone could cause explosions or fire in and around fuel or chemical storage
and transfer areas or blasting areas. Do not store or carry flammable liquids, gases,
or explosive materials in the same compartment as the phone, its parts, or
accessories.
Reduce the risk of repetitive motion injuries
When sending text messages or playing games on your phone, hold the phone with
a relaxed grip, press the keys lightly, use special features that reduce the number of
keys you have to press (such as templates and predictive text), and take frequent
breaks.

Elect rical and Elect r onics En gineer s ( I EEE) . I n bot h cases, t he
recom m endat ions were developed by scient ific and engineering expert s
drawn from indust ry, governm ent , and academ ia aft er ext ensive reviews
of t he scient ific lit er at ure relat ed t o t he biological effect s of RF ener gy.
The exposure lim it set by t he FCC for wireless m obile phones em ploys a
unit of m easurem ent known as the Specific Absorpt ion Rat e ( SAR). The
SAR is a m easure of the rate of absorpt ion of RF energy by t he hum an
body ex pressed in unit s of w at t s per kilogr am ( W/ kg) . The FCC requires
wireless phones t o com ply wit h a safet y lim it of 1.6 wat ts per kilogram
( 1. 6 W/ kg) . The FCC ex posur e lim it incor porat es a subst an t ial m ar gin of
safet y t o giv e addit ional prot ect ion t o t he public and t o account for any
var iations in m easurem ent s.
SAR test s are conducted using st andard operat ing positions accept ed by
t he FCC w it h t he phone t ransm it t ing at it s highest cert ified pow er lev el in
all t est ed frequency bands. Although t he SAR is determ ined at t he highest
certified power level, t he actual SAR level of t he phone while operat ing
can be well below t he m axim um v alue. This is because t he phone is
designed t o operat e at m ult iple pow er lev els so as to use only t he pow er
required to reach the net work. I n general, t he closer you are to a wireless
base stat ion antenna, the low er t he power out put .
Before a new m odel phone is available for sale to t he public, it m ust be
test ed and certified to the FCC that it does not exceed t he exposure lim it
est ablished by t he FCC. Test s for each m odel phone are perform ed in
posit ions and locat ions ( e.g. at t he ear and worn on t he body) as required
by the FCC.
For body worn operation, t his m odel phone has been test ed and m eets
the FCC RF exposure guidelines when used wit h a Sam sung accessory
designat ed for this product or when used wit h an accessory t hat cont ains
no m et al and t hat positions the handset a m inim um of 1.5 cm from t he
body.

The U. S. Food and Drug Adm inist rat ion ( FDA) has published a ser ies of
Quest ions and Answers for consum ers relating t o radio frequency ( RF)
exposure from wireless phones. The FDA publication includes the
follow ing infor m at ion:
W ha t k inds of ph on es a re t h e su bj e ct of t his upd at e?
The t erm wireless phone refers here t o hand- held wireless phones with
built - in ant ennas, oft en called “ cell,” “ m obile,” or “ PCS” phones. These
types of wireless phones can expose the user t o m easurable radio
frequency energy ( RF) because of the short distance bet ween the phone
and the user's head. These RF exposures are lim ited by Federal
Com m unications Com m ission safet y guidelines t hat were developed wit h
the advice of FDA and ot her federal healt h and safet y agencies. When t he
phone is located at greater distances from the user, the exposure to RF is
drast ically lower because a person's RF exposure decreases rapidly wit h
increasing dist ance from t he source. The so- called “ cor dless phones,”
which have a base unit connected to t he telephone wiring in a house,
typically operat e at far lower power levels, and thus produce RF
exposures well wit hin the FCC's com pliance lim it s.
D o w ir ele ss ph on es pose a h ea lt h h az ar d?
The available scient ific evidence does not show that any health problem s
are associated with using wireless phones. There is no proof, however,
that w ireless phones are absolut ely safe. Wireless phones em it low levels
of radio frequency energy (RF) in t he m icrowave range while being used.
They also em it very low levels of RF when in t he st and- by m ode. Whereas
high lev els of RF can pr oduce healt h eff ect s ( by heat ing t issue) , exposur e
t o low level RF t hat does not pr oduce heat ing effect s causes no k nown
adverse healt h effect s. Many st udies of low level RF exposures have not
found any biological effect s. Som e st udies hav e suggest ed t hat som e
biological effect s m ay occur, but such findings have not been confirm ed
by addit ional resear ch. I n som e cases, ot her r esear cher s have had
difficult y in reproducing t hose st udies, or in determ ining t he reasons for
inconsistent result s.
W ha t is FDA's r ole concerning t he safe ty of w ireless phones?
Under t he law, FDA does not r eview t he safet y of r adiat ion- em it t ing
consum er product s such as wireless phones before t hey can be sold, as it
does wit h new drugs or m edical devices. However, the agency has
aut hority t o t ake action if wireless phones are shown to em it radio
frequency energy ( RF) at a level that is hazardous to the user. I n such a
case, FDA could require the m anufact urers of wireless phones t o notify
users of the health hazard and to repair, replace or recall t he phones so
that t he hazard no longer exists.
Although the exist ing scient ific data do not j ust ify FDA regulatory act ions,
FDA has ur ged t he wireless phone indust r y t o t ake a num ber of st eps,
including t he follow ing:

z“ Suppor t needed r esearch int o possible biological effects of RF of
the type em it ted by wireless phones;
z“ Design wireless phones in a way t hat m inim izes any RF exposure
to t he user t hat is not necessary for device function; and
z“ Cooperat e in pr oviding users of wireless phones wit h t he best
possible infor m at ion on possible effect s of wireless phone use on
hum an healt h.
FDA belongs t o an int eragency working group of t he federal agencies t hat
have responsibilit y for different aspect s of RF safet y t o ensure coordinated
effor t s at t he feder al level. The follow ing agencies belong t o t his w or kin g

FDA shares regulatory responsibilities for wireless phones with the Federal
Com m unicat ions Com m ission ( FCC). All phones that are sold in the United
St at es m ust com ply w it h FCC safet y guidelines t hat lim it RF ex posur e.
FCC relies on FDA and other health agencies for safety quest ions about
wireless phones.
FCC also regulat es t he base stat ions t hat t he wireless phone networks
rely upon. While these base stations operate at higher power t han do the
wireless phones them selves, t he RF exposures that people get from t hese
base st at ions ar e t ypically t housands of t im es low er t han t hose t hey can
get from wireless phones. Base st at ions are thus not the prim ary subj ect
of t he safet y quest ions discussed in t his docum ent .
W h at a r e t h e r esu lt s of t he r esea rch done a lr ea dy?
The r esear ch done t hus far has produced conflict ing result s, and m any
studies have suffered from flaws in t heir research m et hods. Anim al
experim ent s invest igat ing t he effect s of r adio frequency energy ( RF)
exposures charact eristic of wireless phones have yielded conflict ing
result s t hat oft en cannot be repeat ed in ot her laboratories. A few anim al
studies, however, have suggested t hat low levels of RF could accelerat e
the developm ent of cancer in laborat ory anim als. However, m any of t he
studies that showed increased t um or developm ent used anim als t hat had
been genet ically engineered or t reat ed w ith cancer- causing chem icals so
as to be pre- disposed t o develop cancer in absence of RF exposure. Other
studies exposed t he anim als t o RF for up t o 22 hours per day. These
condit ions ar e not sim ilar t o t he conditions under which people use
wireless phones, so we don't know wit h cert aint y what t he result s of such
studies m ean for hum an healt h.
Three large epidem iology st udies have been published since Decem ber

2000. Bet ween t hem , t he st udies invest igat ed any possible associat ion
between t he use of wireless phones and prim ary brain cancer, gliom a,
m eningiom a, or acoust ic neurom a, t um ors of the brain or salivary gland,
leukem ia, or ot her cancers. None of the studies dem onst rat ed t he
existence of any har m ful health effect s from wireless phones RF
exposures. How ever, none of t he st udies can answer quest ions about
long- term exposures, since t he average period of phone use in these
studies was around t hree years.
W ha t r esea r ch is ne ede d t o de cide w het h er RF e x posur e fr om
w ir eless phones pose s a h ea lt h r isk ?
A com binat ion of labor at or y st udies and epidem iological st udies of people
act ually using w ir eless phones would pr ov ide som e of t he dat a t hat are
needed. Lifetim e anim al exposure st udies could be com plet ed in a few
years. How ever, very lar ge num bers of anim als would be needed t o
provide reliable proof of a cancer prom oting effect if one exist s.
Epidem iological st udies can prov ide dat a t hat is dir ect ly applicable t o
hum an populat ions, but t en or m or e years' follow- up m ay be needed to
provide answers about som e health effects, such as cancer. This is
because t he int erval bet ween t he t im e of exposure t o a cancer- causing
agent and t he t im e t um ors develop - if t hey do - m ay be m any, m any
years. The int erpret at ion of epidem iological st udies is ham pered by
difficult ies in m easuring act ual RF exposur e during day- t o- day use of
wireless phones. Many fact ors affect t his m easurem ent , such as t he angle
at which t he phone is held, or which m odel of phone is used.
W hat is FDA doing t o find out m ore about t he possible healt h
e ffe ct s of w ir e le ss phon e RF?
FDA is wor king w it h t he U.S. Nat ional Tox icology Progr am and wit h
groups of investigat ors around the world t o ensure that high priorit y
anim al st udies are conduct ed t o address im port ant quest ions about t he
effects of exposure to radio frequency energy ( RF).
FDA has been a leading par ticipant in t he Wor ld Healt h Or ganizat ion
int er nat ional Elect rom agnet ic Fields ( EMF) Proj ect since it s incept ion in
1996. An influential result of t his work has been the developm ent of a
detailed agenda of research needs that has driven t he establishm ent of
new research program s around t he world. The Proj ect has also helped
dev elop a ser ies of public inform at ion docum ent s on EMF issues.
FDA and Cellular Telecom m unications & I nt ernet Associat ion ( CTI A) have
a form al Cooperative Research and Developm ent Agreem ent ( CRADA) t o
do research on wireless phone safet y. FDA provides t he scient ific
over sight , obt aining input fr om ex pert s in governm ent , indust ry, and
academ ic organizat ions. CTI A- funded research is conducted t hrough
cont r act s to independent invest igat or s. The init ial r esear ch w ill include
bot h laboratory studies and studies of wireless phone users. The CRADA
will also include a br oad assessm ent of addit ional r esearch needs in t he
cont ext of t he lat est resear ch developm ent s ar ound t he w orld.

W ha t st eps ca n I t a ke t o r educe m y e xposu re t o r adio fr equ ency
ene rgy from m y w ire less ph on e?
I f there is a risk from t hese product s - and at this point we do not know
that t here is - it is probably very sm all. But if you are concerned about
avoiding even pot ential risks, you can take a few sim ple st eps to m inim ize
your exposure to radio frequency energy ( RF) . Since t im e is a key fact or
in how m uch exposure a person receives, reducing t he am ount of tim e
spent using a wireless phone will reduce RF exposure.
z“ I f you m ust conduct ex tended conversat ions by wireless phone
every day, you could place m ore distance bet ween your body and
the source of t he RF, since t he exposure level drops off
dr am at ically w it h dist ance. For exam ple, you could use a headset
and carry t he wireless phone away from your body or use a
wireless phone connect ed to a rem ot e ant enna.
Again, the scient ific data do not dem onstrate t hat wireless phones are
harm ful. But if you are concerned about t he RF exposure fr om t hese
product s, you can use m easures like t hose described above t o reduce
your RF exposure from wireless phone use.
W hat a bout children using w ireless phone s?
The scient ific evidence does not show a danger to users of wireless
phones, including children and teenagers. I f you want t o t ake st eps to
lower exposure to radio frequency energy ( RF) , the m easures described
above would apply t o children and teenagers using wireless phones.
Reducing t he tim e of wireless phone use and increasing t he dist ance
between t he user and the RF source will reduce RF exposure.
Som e gr oups sponsor ed by ot her nat ional governm ent s have adv ised t hat
children be discouraged from using wireless phones at all. For exam ple,
t he gov er nm ent in t he Unit ed Kingdom dist ribut ed leaflet s cont aining such
a recom m endat ion in Decem ber 2000. They not ed t hat no evidence exists
that using a wireless phone causes brain t um ors or other ill effect s. Their
recom m endat ion t o lim it wireless phone use by children was st rict ly
precaut ionary; it was not based on scient ific ev idence t hat any healt h
hazard exist s.
D o ha nd s- fr e e k it s for w ir ele ss ph on es r edu ce r isk s fr om e x posur e
t o RF e m issions?
Since t here are no known risks from exposure to RF em issions from
wireless phones, there is no reason to believe that hands- free kits reduce
risks. Hands- free kit s can be used w it h wireless phones for conv enience
and com fort . These syst em s reduce the absorption of RF energy in t he
head because the phone, which is the source of the RF em issions, will not
be placed against t he head. On the other hand, if t he phone is m ount ed
against t he w aist or other part of the body during use, then that part of
the body will absorb m ore RF energy. Wireless phones m arketed in t he
U.S. are required to m eet safety requir em ent s regardless of whether t hey
are used against t he head or against the body. Either configurat ion should

result in com pliance wit h the safet y lim it .
D o w ir ele ss ph on e a cce ssor ies t h at cla im t o sh ie ld t he he ad fr om
RF r adia t ion w or k?
Since t here are no known risks from exposure to RF em issions from
wireless phones, there is no reason t o believe that accessories that claim
to shield t he head from t hose em issions reduce risks. Som e product s that
claim t o shield t he user from RF absor pt ion use special phone cases, w hile
ot hers involv e not hing m or e t han a m et allic accessor y at t ached t o t he
phone. St udies hav e shown t hat t hese pr oduct s generally do not work as
adver tised. Unlike “ hand- fr ee” k it s, t hese so- called “ shields” m ay int er fere
with proper operat ion of the phone. The phone m ay be forced t o boost its
power t o com pensat e, leading to an increase in RF absorpt ion. I n
February 2002, the Federal trade Com m ission (FTC) charged t wo
com panies that sold devices that claim ed t o prot ect wireless phone users
from radiation wit h m aking false and unsubst ant iat ed claim s. According t o
FTC, these defendant s lacked a reasonable basis t o subst antiate t heir
claim .
W ha t about w ir eless phone int erfe rence w it h m edica l equipm e nt ?
Radio frequency energy ( RF) from wireless phones can int eract wit h som e
electronic devices. For t his reason, FDA helped develop a det ailed t est
m et hod to m easure elect rom agnet ic int erference ( EMI ) of im plant ed
car diac pacem akers and defibr illators from wireless t elephones. This t est
m et hod is now part of a st andard sponsored by t he Association for t he
Adv ancem ent of Medical inst rum ent at ion ( AAMI ) . The fin al dr aft , a j oint
effort by FDA, m edical device m anufact urers, and m any ot her groups,
was com plet ed in lat e 2000. This standard will allow m anufact urers t o
ensure that cardiac pacem akers and defibrillat ors are safe from wireless
phone EMI . FDA has t est ed wireless phones and helped develop a
voluntary st andard sponsored by the I nstit ut e of Electrical and Elect ronic
Engineers ( I EEE) . This standard specifies t est m et hods and perform ance
requirem ent s for hearing aids and wireless phones so t hat no int erference
occurs when a person uses a com pat ible phone and a com pat ible hearing
aid at t he sam e t im e. This st andard was approved by t he I EEE in 2000.
FDA continues t o m onit or t he use of wireless phones for possible
int eract ions w it h ot her m edical dev ices. Should har m ful int erference be
found t o occur , FDA w ill conduct t est ing t o assess t he int er fer ence and
work t o resolve the problem .

Switch your phone off when in any area wit h a potent ially explosive
atm osphere and obey all signs and inst ruct ions. Sparks in such areas
could cause an explosion or fire resulting in bodily inj ury or even deat h.
Users are advised t o switch the phone off while at a refueling point
( service st at ion) . Users are rem inded of the need t o observe rest rict ions
on t he use of radio equipm ent in fuel depot s ( fuel storage and dist ribut ion
areas), chem ical plants or where blast ing operations are in progress.
Areas wit h a pot ent ially explosive at m osphere are oft en but not alw ays
clearly m arked. They include below deck on boat s, chem ical transfer or
storage facilit ies, vehicles using liquefied pet roleum gas (such as propane
or butane), areas where t he air cont ains chem icals or particles, such as
grain, dust or m et al powders, and any other area where you would
norm ally be advised t o turn off your vehicle engine.

and landline networks as well as user program m ed funct ions, which

cannot guar ant ee connect ion in all condit ions. Ther efore, you should
never rely solely on any wireless phone for essent ial com m unicat ions
