Introduction
Thank you very much for purchasing our product, the Santec Polarized Light Source
PLS Series. This Operation Manual contains the necessary information for proper
operation of the PLS-100, and it is intended for those with sufcient knowledge about
the dangers of lasers and their safe control. Before operating the PLS-100, you should
first read thoroughly through this Operation Manual and become familiar with its
contents. After reading this Operation Manual, keep it close by for an easy reference
anytime.
The packing materials and box of this product are needed for long-term storage or
transportation; keep them in a safe place after unpacking the product.

How to Read the Manual
Before operating the PLS-100, please read this instruction manual carefully.
This Operation Manual consists of 11 Chapters:
Chapters 1 to 4 illustrate the safety notes, the product composition, the panel
description and the installation.
Chapters 5 to 6 describe how to operate the product. Santec recommends that
Chapter 1 to 4 be read carefully before proceeding to this chapter.
Chapter 7 describes the operating principles.
Chapter 8 explains the specications.
Chapter 9 describes the maintenance and storage methods of the product.
Chapter 10 explains the packing instructions and shipping.
Chapter 11 describes the troubleshooting.

This product radiates class 1M invisible laser. Do not look at the tip of optical output
connector using optical instruments like magniers or microscopes. The laser radiation

Pay attention to the following guidelines for safe, trouble-free operation.
This product is a high-precision device and be designed to be used indoors (Pollution
Degree 2).
・Do not place over a height of 2,000 meter.
・Do not place in direct sunlight.
・Do not place under high temperature and high humidity.
・Do not place in an environment with dust, dirt, salt, or corrosive gas.
・Do not place in an area subject to large vibrations.
・ Do not place in an area subject to noise by electric eld, magnetic eld, etc.
・Do not place in an area where the unit is subject to falling objects landing on it.
・Do not place with possible exposure to water.
Be sure to install the PLS-100 in a level place (less than 5 degree). It is recommended
to install this product on a vibration-proof base. The unit may not operate correctly if
the device is set in an inclined position.
The mainframe of the PLS-100 weighs about 3.5 kg. Please ensure that the table or
shelf upon which it is installed has sufcient strength. Clearance of 5 cm at the rear
and the side of the unit should be allowed for proper ventilation. And the air intakes
are located at the bottom and the side of the device. Please do not remove the rubber
legs, in order to secure airow.
This product uses a 3-line power cord and plug with a protective ground line. Power cord
may be attached and detached, Connect it to the power source socket at the rear panel. Use
the power cord supplied with the unit. Do not use the inappropriate power code. This product
complies with overvoltage category Ⅱ and can operate between 100 to 240 Volts, and 50 to
60Hz AC Line. Temporary over voltage (TOV) is 1,500 Volts. Use two surge resistant type
fuses. T1.6A/250V(100~240V) (Refer to "9-3. Replacing Fuses"). Clearance of 5 cm at the
rear side of the unit should be allowed for proper ventilation. Don't remove rubber feet to
ensure air intake.

4-1 Operating Environments
This product is grounded by the ground line in the supplied power cable. This product
must be properly grounded to avoid electrical shock and other dangers. Please make sure
that this product is properly grounded to avoid electrical shock. In addition, please place
this product in a location that allows the user to easily unplug the power cable, in case of
any device malfunction.

1. Press the power ON/OFF switch at the lower left of the front panel.
2. The LED above the power ON/OFF switch will turn green.
At this time, the light is not still output from the connector.

5 -1 Turning on the Unit

Remove the cap of the optical “INPUT” connector and connect the optical ber to the
connector.

Before connecting an optical ber, always clean the end face of the connector. If
dirt is present on either the end face of the connector or the socket, the insertion
loss will be increased.

3. Press the Active ON/OFF switch to turn on SLD.
4. The LED above the Active ON/OFF switch will turn blue.
At this time, the light is output from the connector.
It may take a few minutes by being stable the optical output. We recommend that
you wait at about 30 minutes if you need more stable optical output.
5. Press the Active ON/OFF key again to turn off the SLD. Then,the LED turns off.
6. Press the Active ON/OFF switch to turn off the light.(Refer to the “5.3. Optical
output)
7. Press the Power ON/OFF switch to turn off the unit.
The unit is shut down and the Power LED will turn off.

Detailed Operation

6-1 Polarization axis adjustment
■6-1-1 Coarse adjustmentSetting the Trigger Output
It can rotate the polarization axis of 90 degrees or more by rotating the coarse
movement knob.
■6-1-2 Coarse adjustment
When you would like to fine-tune the polarization axis, uses the fine move-
ment knob.
In case of turning to + direction, the polarization axis increases.
In case of turning to – direction, the polarization axis decreases.
The adjustment range is about +/-3 degrees.
■6-1-3 Optical-axis alignment
When you replace the ber that is connected to the PLS-100 or use the bare
fiber adaptor, there is a case where the output power is reduced because
the coupling loss increases. In this case, align the optical-axis by rotating the
optical-axis alignment knob.
The alignment range is about φ2mm.
