Guardrail Height
Minimum height for
guardrailing is 900mm from
the walking surface.
If guardrail is more than
1100mm high, a third rail is
required
Width Between Guardrails
Horizontal distance between
guardrails, intermediate rails
or toeboards shall not be less
than 550mm.
Minimum width of walkway
must be 600mm.
Typical Guardrail Requirements (From AS1657 :2013 Standards)
Min 50mm Clearance
Guardrail on Sloping Roofs
If there is guardrail on the
edge of the roof where the
slope is 12o or greater, a third
rail is recommended.
Hand Clearance
The distance between the
edge of the handrail and any
adjacent structure must be
no less than 50mm.
NOTE. A Handrail provides a
handhold. eg, Stairway. This
may not be applicable when
used as a guardrail. (Barrier as
edge protection)
Guardrail on Platforms
Guardrail is not required on a platform if
the height to lower landing is less than
300mm and (W) is not more than 1000mm.
If (W) is less than 1000mm then the
guardrail height must be increased by
300mm.
If platform is higher than 300mm,
guardrailing is required on the platform.
Toeboard
A toeboard (Min 100mm) shall be installed
on the edge of a walkway which an object
could fall to where persons have access to
the area below and to the side of the
walkway.

Minimum Qty of fixings:-
4 x 5mm bulb-tite rivets or
3 x 8mm bulb-tite rivets
For any guardrail channel fixed to
roof deck
Minimum Qty - 2 x Fixings for each
connection point
Minimum 2 braces required for
every straight length of guadrail.
Note, only roof deck mounted
systems require the braces

NOTES
The SENTRY Guardrail Systems complies with AS1657 when installed as per the instructions
detailed These drawings and Instructions must be read in conjunction with the Australian Standards
Criteria
1Guardrail height is to be 900 - 1000mm from the walking surface or the nosing of a
stair tread
2Distance between guardrails, intermediate rails or toe-boards shall not be less than
550mm
3Hand clearance - Min 60mm between the edge of any handrail and adjacent structure
4Toe-board - A toe-board shall be installed on the edge of a platform or walkway where
there is no permanent structure within 10mm of the edge and from which an object
could fall to where persons have access to the area below and to the side of a
walkway Maximum gap between the toe-board and walkway is 10mm
5Minimum width of walking surface or length of stair tread shall be 600mm
6All walkways are designed for 25KPA UDL (This does not include the structure to which
it is fixed eg Roof deck)
7In general, the angle of slope of the walking surface shall not exceed 3◦ (Walkway
mounted directly to low-pitched roofs can have a cross-slope not exceeding 7◦)
8The angle of the walking surface in the direction of travel shall not exceed 20◦ (ie
up/down the roof slope) Where the walkway slope is between 10◦- 20◦, cleats
shall be fitted
